It's all in the title—I'm 70, and I've been traveling by bike (tent and camp stove) for five years now. Statistically, how many more years do I have left to plan my destinations and see (almost) everything?
Question is half realistic, half humorous.
To keep it simple: how old are you, fellow senior cyclists still on the road? And what are your biggest challenges?
Personally, I'm in good physical shape, though my cruising speed has dropped from 3–4 km/h over the past five years.

I get it for those whose income comes from undeclared activities, but what about everyone else?
Between the risk of theft, scams at exchange counters, and fees that often end up being higher, I’m really puzzled.
The last time I traveled with a wad of cash was because I had to pay for accommodation in cash only, the local currency was the dollar (easy to exchange at a very low cost), and I was still paying some fees.
I’m still wondering about my next trip to Argentina because the situation there is very specific, but otherwise?
Is it an allergy to modern payment methods?
A budget so tight that an extra 20 € (the fees some local banks charge for withdrawals) on a 2000 € budget would be impossible to manage?

Ah, Iceland and us—it’s quite the story, or rather, a long wait... The first time we considered going was already 7-8 years ago, after reading travel journals describing breathtaking landscapes, countless active and dormant volcanoes, glaciers, and waterfalls with extraordinary flows. In short, this island, made of fire and ice, right at Europe’s doorstep with its own unique culture, had nothing but advantages, and it was urgent to visit without delay 😇
My *Routard* guidebook is actually from 2016. So why did Iceland make us wait so long before we finally gave in to its charms? Yes, why indeed?
Simply because reading other travel journals revealed the cost of living there—and especially the harsh climate, even in the middle of July 🤪! Some journals described entire weeks of rain and foggy weather, making it tricky to explore the island. The budget wasn’t spared either, because in the most touristy areas, especially in the south and around Myvatn, accommodation prices are downright indecent—even outright robbery. 😕
Plus, in the Highlands, there’s literally no permanent lodging, and the only way to spend several nights there is to camp. And camping in winter conditions wasn’t exactly part of our plans... 😄
So, year after year, this trip kept getting postponed...
until August 2023, when prices for Southern Africa, North or South America, or even Asia were all way too high for summer 2024!
That’s when I turned my attention back to the Land of Fire and Ice and scoured all the comparison sites for the best accommodation deals across the country. Planning for 20 nights, I found 13 nights in "proper" lodging for 5 people at an average cost of under 200 €! A miracle, considering that in the southern glacier region, around Vik or Myvatn, prices range from 300 to 1000 € per night 😮 😮!
Still, that means we’ll have to camp for 7 nights, mostly in the Highlands, near Askja or Landmannalaugar. 😎
For once, I built the daily itinerary entirely around the decently priced lodgings I found 11 months in advance! The shortage of places to stay in some areas forced me to plan a few long transition days and make some tough choices. No big deal, though—there’s so much to do on this island 🙂!
Once the main itinerary was set, everyone agreed to the plan: 2/3 in proper lodging and 1/3 camping, even the most camping-averse among us! *Follow my gaze...*
By the time we bought the flight tickets, I had to tweak the itinerary a bit because one or two places were already booked! Plus, it was impossible to wait for a more refined plan to adjust reservations, since almost all bookings are non-refundable!! The harsh law of supply and demand...
For the car rental, we booked a Hyundai Tucson, approved for the Highlands, from Lava Car Rental—a company I’d read good reviews about in a Facebook group—for a cool 2500 € with full insurance. A real 4x4, like a Defender, would’ve been more than double...! Welcome to Iceland 😕...
Activities and excursions also required some tough choices. We had two must-dos: whale watching in Húsavík (60 € pp on Getyourguide) and a Glacier and Summer Treasure Glacier Walk with BlueIceland (165 € pp with discount codes on Getyourguide).
For the baths, we skipped the Blue Lagoon—too expensive—in favor of the Secret Lagoon and the Myvatn Baths, the Blue Lagoon’s equivalent but half the price.
Two baths for the price of one... and even more, since I spotted several free hot-water swimming spots.

Friday, July 5, 2024, is our last workday before driving up to Alsace overnight to leave the cockers at Grandpa’s for boarding. Then, at 1:30 AM, we’ll head to Frankfurt, where a direct flight to Iceland awaits.
We arrive at 4 AM. Since we leave at 7 AM, the "night" will only last the equivalent of a 30-minute nap 🤪... just enough to get us in the road-trip mood 😏!!

So many silent months, and now Voyage Forum is accessible again. That’s cool because we can pick up our discussions for our mutual enjoyment.
I hope everyone is doing well and that you’ve been able to take some great trips, whether to the USA or elsewhere.
In September 2020, we had planned a round trip to explore Colorado, but unfortunately, a nasty virus messed up our plans, closing borders and keeping us stuck at home. Luckily for us, canceling the car, flights, and accommodations didn’t cost us a thing—everything was refunded.
In 2023, a loop from Las Vegas let us revisit places we’d seen in 2017 and discover new ones, this time spending more time at each stop with some lovely hikes.
In 2024, we finally revisited the 2020 plan, and I’ll start with that.
However, unforeseen circumstances mean I have much less time than before, so I’ll keep my trip reports shorter (ha ha ha—you’ll have less of my prose to endure).
Another change: for those who remember the "Gang of Four crazy sixty-somethings," it was just DD and me this time. Our dear Mimi and Maumau left the Var to focus on raising horses and can’t leave their little green paradise to join us anymore. We were unfortunately much tamer without them.

We speak very little English. We spent 21 nights there and covered a 3,400 km loop by car and 160 km on foot (we’re still trying to hike while we’re in shape) from Denver in September 2024. We wanted this road trip to help us explore Colorado a bit more—we’d only spent 6 nights there in 2019—and to see it during the fall foliage season. We also wanted to return to Utah (we love Moab) to enjoy its red rocks, which we adore.
In the prices you see (some in euros, others in dollars), I’ve included bank fees and exchange charges. The flights, car, and parking were paid by credit card when we booked in February. Usually, we book around November, but some obligations kept us from doing it earlier. We downloaded the MPC (Mobile Passport Control) app on our phone, which saved us time at immigration.

Out of 21 nights, only one place didn’t include breakfast.

This cash was used to pay for: - Evening restaurants and tips (between 70 $ and 95 $ for two meals and two drinks) - Two state parks: Dead Horse State Park (20 $) and Rifle State Park (10 $) - The Monarch Pass gondola (24 $) - Midday picnics - Gas (slightly cheaper with cash): 204 $ for 3,400 km - Personal souvenirs and little treats.
Like in our previous road trips, we didn’t rent a GPS. We used the offline GPS app Here We Go, for which we’d downloaded maps of Colorado and Utah from France, as well as a new offline app called Organic Maps as a backup—though we didn’t end up needing it.
❤️❤️❤️ **Highlights (there are so many!)** 📍 The stunning landscapes of Colorado, especially with the fall colors 📍 A step back in time at the old farm in Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument 📍 The prairies of Cripple Creek and the mining remnants of the Vindicator Trail 📍 The cheeky chipmunks in the ghost town of St. Elmo 📍 Great Sand Dunes and its soft sand 📍 The steam train between Durango and Silverton: we’re glad we chose the round-trip because it rained heavily on the way there, but we got to enjoy the scenery on the way back when the sun came out 📍 The unexpected meet-up with Michèle from the group outside a restaurant in Durango 📍 The hot springs in Ouray 📍 Mesa Verde and its still-vibrant past 📍 The red rocks of Moab and Delicate Arch at sunset 📍 The lace-like Fisher Towers and the view from the end of the trail 📍 The gorgeous Route 128 leading to Colorado National Monument—small, easy to visit, and so beautiful 📍 The colors of the fabulous Kebler Pass, Crested Butte, and especially the hike through the golden aspens (Lower and Upper Loop) 📍 The waterfalls at Rifle State Park 📍 The tundra of Independence Pass 📍 The Halloween decorations in Georgetown and Idaho Springs
😞😞 **Flops (there are very few!)** 📍 The viewpoints we missed because they weren’t well-marked or we didn’t see the signs 📍 The closure of some hiking trails (Hanging Lake and parts of Canyonlands) and the Sal Mountain Loop road, which kept us from accessing it 📍😢 The Chesler Park hike we had to cut short due to poor time management—180 km between our stop in Cortez meant we didn’t arrive until 10:30 AM, way too late for a 17 km hike.

😞😞 **Flops (there are very few!)** 📍 The viewpoints we missed because they weren’t well-marked or we didn’t see the signs 📍 The closure of some hiking trails (Hanging Lake and parts of Canyonlands) and the Sal Mountain Loop road, which kept us from accessing it 📍😢 The Chesler Park hike we had to cut short due to poor time management—180 km between our stop in Cortez meant we didn’t arrive until 10:30 AM, way too late for a 17 km hike.

In 2017, struck by western addiction, our first road trip gave us an irresistible urge to return, which we did from September 2nd to 24th, 2019, on a loop from Denver to Denver via Yellowstone. The westernmost point of this journey, which took us through the geographical center of the USA, brought us within about a hundred kilometers of Moab, which had been the easternmost point of our last trip.
We’ve been back for over a month now, and I realize I’m starting to forget some details—it’s high time I started my travel journal before my brain turns into Swiss cheese and lets everything slip away. As I mentioned in my last story, it’ll take me quite a while to finish, so if any travelers have specific questions, don’t hesitate to message me privately. Once again, I’d like to thank everyone who helped me (and there were many!) prepare our road trip, with a special shout-out to Disneydiddl, Hiacinthe, and Titou (ladies first) as well as Fred and Itat, whom I bombarded with questions for months and who always kindly and patiently gave me tons of great tips. It’s thanks to all of you that this trip was such a success. I was a little worried I wouldn’t recapture the emotion and enthusiasm of our 2017 trip, but this one was just as "Wow" as the last.

We live in the Var region, have known each other for over 20 years, and this was our second trip together to this magical West.
Mimi (Michèle): always the smallest and the funniest. Thank goodness she was there to speak English! Maumau (Maurice): her husband, always with his white hair, his Gallic mustache, his humor, and his Southern accent. He drove every other day. DD (André): the one with the beard, with whom I celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary at Yellowstone. Our second driver appreciated having a peaceful mind since he’s been retired since July. Marcalamar (Martine): that’s me—still blonde with glasses, still talking a lot, and still terrified of messing up the organization of this trip despite all the hours spent on the forum.

After five trips to the American West, we had planned to switch countries and continents to visit Turkey. However, by the time we made up our minds, flight ticket prices had nearly doubled, reaching 400 € for a round-trip ticket. A bit disappointed, I started looking at transatlantic flight prices and stumbled upon discounted tickets from Basel-Mulhouse to Dallas—at the same price as our tickets to Turkey!
No hesitation needed; we bought the five tickets for a total of 1,860 € excluding baggage!
From Fort Worth Airport, we had two options: - Head west on a loop through Texas, New Mexico, and southern Colorado - Head east to change the scenery and explore East Texas, Louisiana, with a possible detour into Florida.
The latter option won unanimously, so here we are, off to discover new states, mainly Louisiana and Texas.
One of the main post-COVID challenges is finding a reasonably priced car rental. After an initial booking around 1,300 €, we kept an eye on prices a few weeks before departure and managed to snag a better deal at around 900 € for a comfortable sedan.
Yes, this summer will also be a first: no 4x4, no camping, and plenty of restaurants!
As always, I’ve planned a packed itinerary, ready to adjust on the go. A few weeks before departure, we learned we’d be at full capacity—our eldest son, Maxime, got his first-year med school results. By finishing as a top admit, he avoided the mandatory July-August internship that would’ve kept him from joining us. Instead, he wrapped up his internship at the last minute the night before our big departure.
We’ll get to savor these special moments together.

Day 0 - 07/14: The departure timing isn’t exactly relaxing. On Thursday late afternoon, we hit the road to Alsace, aiming to drop off our two cockers with family before reaching the airport at 2 AM for a 3-hour power nap. Not exactly fresh, we arrive at the terminal looking for a British Airways counter. None in sight, so we try our luck at a United Airlines counter—who knows, maybe it’ll work out. And bingo! The agent checks us in. We didn’t quite understand why, but maybe there’s some agreement between airlines. For the first time, we’re traveling without checked baggage, so no extra fees. Not a huge feat, given the scorching temperatures awaiting us!
The connecting flight to London goes smoothly.
During the layover, liquid checks get stricter—now requiring small bottles to be in a pre-approved clear bag, with only one bag allowed per passenger. Normally, no big deal, but between deodorant, sunscreen, after-sun lotion, hand sanitizer, contact lens solution, etc., we spend 20 minutes optimizing the arrangement! When we finally succeed, one of the security staff bursts out laughing and congratulates us!
With our stomachs growling, we grab an American breakfast before browsing the airport shops.
We then discover our plane for the long-haul flight and are thrilled to see it’s an A380—a first for Laetitia, though the rest of the family experienced it during our winter getaway. Still just as impressive!
With a hint of uncertainty, we take off for the States—my third trip in barely 12 months. This time, no endless badlands, canyons, slot canyons, hoodoos, or brain rocks, but a journey through five states (Texas, Louisiana, a quick stop in Mississippi, Alabama, and the northwest tip of Florida), where we hope to soak up a unique vibe... with a packed schedule of diverse visits.
Arrival at Fort Worth Airport and customs go smoothly. Since we have no checked baggage, we’re first in line at the Dollar counter. In just 3 minutes, the formalities are done. We decline the Toll Pass, which I don’t think we’ll need based on my "calculations," and head to the Dollar parking lot, where an employee tells us we can pick any car we want!
There are about thirty cars waiting. Too many choices!
After last year’s mishap in Oakland, where our 4x4’s trunk was broken into, we’re looking for a sedan to hide our luggage this time. Unfortunately, there are none—only SUVs. We finally settle on a comfortable 7-seater Ford SUV with a massive trunk when set up for five.
On the road from Fort Worth to Dallas, we accidentally take a toll highway without realizing until it’s too late to exit. Let’s hope Dollar doesn’t charge us a week’s worth of their pricey Toll Pass for a $2 toll. We’ll see... In the meantime, Maxime sets up Google Maps to avoid toll roads.
Since it’s not too late, we stop by the nearest Walmart for groceries before checking into our hotel room for three nights in East Dallas suburb.

I’ve never done a travel journal on VF before... so I’m giving it a go this year 😉. Just to share a bit of my 3-week trip around the West.
Since I couldn’t find anyone to share the trip with this year, I decided to go solo for 3 weeks at the last minute. So, it wasn’t a super organized or original trip—flight tickets booked last-minute, a loosely planned itinerary—but it was a choice I made.
I wanted to book zero hotels and just drive wherever I felt like. No set hikes or specific goals. Just a classic route through places I already knew for the most part, taking the time to soak in the landscapes. So, don’t expect a story about epic hikes leading to caves or hidden arches in unusual spots. It was more like a return to the roots of my first trip, with one twist: I wanted to explore some areas by mountain bike. Just to see things a little differently.
First up, instead of photos, I’ll share a little time-lapse I made during the trip.
Thursday, October 31: Left Nice early in the morning for Phoenix via London.
The trip was a bit long because I had to wait 5.5 hours in London. My flight ticket was booked kinda late, so I didn’t have much choice.
And then it hit me—when you’re prepping for a trip, you always think you’ll forget something. It was in London that I realized I’d left my driver’s license on my living room shelf. I searched everywhere, but nope, I didn’t bring it.🤪
Luckily, I had an international permit, but the rental contract clearly stated that both licenses had to be presented.
I called a friend to ask her to overnight it to my first hotel, crossing my fingers that the mail wouldn’t take two weeks to arrive.
The flight with British Airways went pretty well. Comfortable enough to watch two movies, eat, take a little nap, and boom—I was in Phoenix.
Around 8 PM local time, I got to the Alamo car rental agency, and surprise—they didn’t care about my license at all. They glanced at the international permit, told me to bring the other one when I got it (basically, they didn’t give a damn), and handed me my car! Woohoo! 😛

I headed to my hotel (the only one I’d booked for my first night), explained to the front desk that my license should arrive by mail so they’d be in the loop, and crashed for a well-deserved first night in the U.S.
Friday, November 1 (And yes! It was a holiday in France, which would complicate my mail situation later.)
I woke up super early with my first goal: find a decent mountain bike at a good price but sturdy enough to handle some national park trails.
As I mentioned earlier, I decided to switch things up this year and explore some mountain bike trails—or just ride whenever I got the chance 😉.
I checked two Walmarts before finally finding a solid bike for under $150. Some might wonder why I bought one—well, the reason’s simple. Renting a bike costs between $40 and $70 a day. My trip lasted 22 days. QED (that’s "quod erat demonstrandum" for those who didn’t get it).
I bought the bike, which fit in my Jeep Compass by folding down the back seats (not super convenient, but it worked).

Off I went on my first adventures.
I decided to head to Apache Junction.
First stop: the Apache Trail at Goldfield Ghost Town. Pretty cute, though super touristy. Some classic Western decor, a little chapel overlooking everything, a museum, a mine, a small Disneyland-style train, souvenir shops, and places to grab a snack. Nothing mind-blowing, but still a fun little visit—especially if you’ve got kids.


I got lucky and explored the ghost town with two school buses—about a hundred excited kids. Total chaos for a ghost town, but hilarious to watch from a distance 😎.
A little further down the Apache Trail, there’s Lost Dutchman State Park. I didn’t linger too long because my goal was to reach the lakes, and after my Walmart adventure and some driving, it was already almost 1 PM. I munched on a bag of chips and hit the road (lots of 20–25 mph speed limits).
I spotted N 1st Water Road along the way, planning to come back in a few days.
My plan to get to the lakes ASAP got derailed when I found a parking lot with a horse trail right in the middle of the saguaros.
I asked a ranger in the lot if I could ride the trail on my mountain bike. He said it’d probably be tough but gave me the green light.
Off I went in my padded shorts and helmet. First bike ride through the cacti with my trusty travel companion (my bike, obviously).

I started off super excited on what seemed like an easy trail, but I quickly realized horse trails don’t account for some key biking challenges 😎—like climbing rocks isn’t exactly a breeze on a mountain bike 😛. No biggie, I carried the bike a few times but got to see my first saguaros up close! A pretty cool way to explore—I don’t regret buying the bike at all!
I got back on the road after drinking 1.5 liters of water (even in November, the sun’s no joke) and headed toward Canyon Lake. With vibes like Lake Powell, I was blown away by the scenery and decided to hang out a bit—just to "soak it in" and enjoy the quiet to end my day. I didn’t see more of the Apache Trail because night falls fast, and for my first day, I figured that was plenty.


I’d decided not to stress about seeing everything at all costs since I’ve traveled a lot in the U.S. and plan to keep coming back. Whatever I missed, I’d catch next time—but I wanted to fully enjoy a few landscapes.
I drove back to Phoenix, grabbed a good burger, and spent the evening in my hotel room planning the next day. Originally, I was only supposed to stay one night in Phoenix, but with my license still MIA, I changed my plans. In the end, I was solo, no reservations anywhere, so I’d just take it day by day!
Saturday, November 2:
I decided to wake up early and head to Tucson for the day. The drive from Phoenix was pretty easy. About 2 hours later, I was at the entrance of Saguaro National Park.
And guess what? There was a little trail perfect for mountain biking. I parked my Jeep at the park entrance and hopped on my bike. I ended up biking the whole park from start to finish—about 20 kilometers, with a paved main road and a gorgeous central trail right through the saguaros! Stunning!

Even being careful, I still got a few cactus spines in my left arm from brushing too close (it stings!). Not easy to remove, so I’d advise anyone with the same idea to be more careful than I was. You’ll figure it out fast! 😉
I spent most of the day in this amazing park—it’s totally worth the detour. It feels like hundreds of chimneys all lined up at equal distances. A unique landscape you’ve gotta see.
Next, I headed to Tucson to check out the airplane boneyard. I’d seen it in a movie years ago and always wanted to see it for myself. Mission accomplished! It was pretty intense, but unfortunately, it didn’t seem possible to get to the most interesting plane alignments. There’s a museum with different types of planes and a guided tour. I settled for peeking through the fences at the planes guarded by military patrols.

I left around 6 PM and got back to Phoenix around 7:30–8 PM, super happy with my day of biking through the cacti!
Sunday, November 3:
Morning by the pool, lounging around—pure bliss. Around 11 AM, I headed to the Premium Outlets. Feeling pretty pleased with myself, I bought 5 pairs of Levi’s for the price of one in France. Just for that, I knew coming to the U.S. was worth it! After that, nothing super exciting—except a cotton field south of Phoenix that I couldn’t stop admiring for a good hour.

I drove around the city—pretty dead on a Sunday—and headed back to the Apache Trail to tackle N 1st Water Road, which I’d spotted two days earlier. A really fun trail to bike if you’ve got a mountain bike 😉. It gives access to several hikes and offers some great scenery. Highly recommend it.

Off I went in my padded shorts and helmet. First bike ride through the cacti with my trusty travel companion (my bike, obviously).

I started off super excited on what seemed like an easy trail, but I quickly realized horse trails don’t account for some key biking challenges 😎—like climbing rocks isn’t exactly a breeze on a mountain bike 😛. No biggie, I carried the bike a few times but got to see my first saguaros up close! A pretty cool way to explore—I don’t regret buying the bike at all!
I got back on the road after drinking 1.5 liters of water (even in November, the sun’s no joke) and headed toward Canyon Lake. With vibes like Lake Powell, I was blown away by the scenery and decided to hang out a bit—just to "soak it in" and enjoy the quiet to end my day. I didn’t see more of the Apache Trail because night falls fast, and for my first day, I figured that was plenty.


I’d decided not to stress about seeing everything at all costs since I’ve traveled a lot in the U.S. and plan to keep coming back. Whatever I missed, I’d catch next time—but I wanted to fully enjoy a few landscapes.
I drove back to Phoenix, grabbed a good burger, and spent the evening in my hotel room planning the next day. Originally, I was only supposed to stay one night in Phoenix, but with my license still MIA, I changed my plans. In the end, I was solo, no reservations anywhere, so I’d just take it day by day!
Saturday, November 2:
I decided to wake up early and head to Tucson for the day. The drive from Phoenix was pretty easy. About 2 hours later, I was at the entrance of Saguaro National Park.
And guess what? There was a little trail perfect for mountain biking. I parked my Jeep at the park entrance and hopped on my bike. I ended up biking the whole park from start to finish—about 20 kilometers, with a paved main road and a gorgeous central trail right through the saguaros! Stunning!

Even being careful, I still got a few cactus spines in my left arm from brushing too close (it stings!). Not easy to remove, so I’d advise anyone with the same idea to be more careful than I was. You’ll figure it out fast! 😉
I spent most of the day in this amazing park—it’s totally worth the detour. It feels like hundreds of chimneys all lined up at equal distances. A unique landscape you’ve gotta see.
Next, I headed to Tucson to check out the airplane boneyard. I’d seen it in a movie years ago and always wanted to see it for myself. Mission accomplished! It was pretty intense, but unfortunately, it didn’t seem possible to get to the most interesting plane alignments. There’s a museum with different types of planes and a guided tour. I settled for peeking through the fences at the planes guarded by military patrols.

I left around 6 PM and got back to Phoenix around 7:30–8 PM, super happy with my day of biking through the cacti!
Sunday, November 3:
Morning by the pool, lounging around—pure bliss. Around 11 AM, I headed to the Premium Outlets. Feeling pretty pleased with myself, I bought 5 pairs of Levi’s for the price of one in France. Just for that, I knew coming to the U.S. was worth it! After that, nothing super exciting—except a cotton field south of Phoenix that I couldn’t stop admiring for a good hour.

I drove around the city—pretty dead on a Sunday—and headed back to the Apache Trail to tackle N 1st Water Road, which I’d spotted two days earlier. A really fun trail to bike if you’ve got a mountain bike 😉. It gives access to several hikes and offers some great scenery. Highly recommend it.


Hi everyone, I’m restarting my travel reports with my 2023 trip that took me from Costa Rica to Suriname over a month and a half.
First stop: Costa Rica. I arrived in late September in San José, a city I know well and never linger in. As soon as I got off the early-morning flight, I headed to the domestic airport—just a 5-minute walk away—to catch a 45-minute flight to Puerto Limón on the Caribbean coast. The 40-minute flight in a small Cessna was fun, especially since we landed on a tiny airstrip right by the sea—it felt like landing on the beach, which immediately set the mood. Plus, I wasn’t keen on enduring the 4–5-hour bus ride to Cahuita, especially since large sections of the road were under renovation. In Cahuita (where I’ve been going every year since 2015), I stayed at Kenaki Lodge on Playa Grande. It’s a great lodge, about a 45-minute walk from Cahuita’s center, but you’re just 50 meters from the beach and usually have it all to yourself. The lodge is run by Béa, a Frenchwoman, and depending on the season, you can help release baby turtles on the beach. The room was 55 €, very spacious, and you can use the outdoor kitchen. I’d recommend it for anyone looking for peace and quiet and a private beach.
After 5 days there, I flew to Cartagena but didn’t stay overnight. Instead, I headed straight to Rincón del Mar, a 3-hour bus ride from CTG. I’d mostly heard about it from a friend who lives there and runs El Ché, a beachfront restaurant. Rincón del Mar is a tiny seaside village, very peaceful, with a pretty nice beach. There are lots of small hotels and restaurants, and it’s a spot that’s likely to grow quickly in the coming years. Note: there’s no ATM there, so you’ll need to withdraw cash in San Onofre, about 30 minutes away by moto-taxi. The round trip costs around 25,000 COP. That’s also where you catch the bus to Cartagena. For accommodations, rooms were roughly 70,000–90,000 COP, with a so-so value for the price. As for things to do, I’d recommend the tour that takes you to watch the sunset in front of Bird Island, followed by a swim in a lagoon with bioluminescent plankton. The excursion (if I remember correctly) cost around 90,000 COP.
After a week in Rincón del Mar, I headed back to Cartagena and decided to fly to Yopal to visit the Río Meta. In Yopal, you’ll need to go to the bus terminal (10 minutes by taxi from the airport). From there, I took a bus to Orocué (50,000 COP) for about a 4-hour trip—it felt endless because the road was in terrible condition. Orocué is a tiny town on the banks of the Río Meta, but it has all the essentials (hotels, restaurants, ATMs). It’s lovely to stroll along the river at sunset. There are a few small bars, the area is very natural, the sunsets are stunning, and when there are distant storms, it’s just breathtaking. For lodging, I stayed at Hotel Brisas de San Miguel. It wasn’t bad—fan-cooled room for 70,000 COP. There were quite a few mosquitoes. I spent 3 days in Orocué. If you want to swim, head to the bridge (the only one), Cano San Miguel, and on the right, there’s a swimming spot. With the heat, it’s a great way to cool off.
From Orocué, I took a fast *lancha* (boat) up the Río Meta to Puerto Carreño, in the Vichada department at the far end of Colombia. This brings you to the majestic Orinoco River, right across from Venezuela. The boat ride is long—10 hours—and costs about 60 €. We left around 6 AM, with a few stops for bathroom breaks and meals along the way. But you *must* book your spot 1–2 days in advance. To do that, go to the small square above the dock—there’s a "navigation office" there. The trip was long but enjoyable. I never get tired of river journeys.
I was happy to finally arrive in Puerto Carreño, a small border town with Venezuela. No surprise that half the population was Venezuelan. In Puerto Carreño, I stayed at Hotel Delfines del Orinoco. The room was 80,000 COP, decent, with A/C, and the best part was the pool. I spent 2 nights there. One thing you *must* do—morning and evening—is hike to the top of Cerro de la Bandera (the *cerros* are huge rock formations typical of the Orinoco region, and there are many in the area). From the summit, you get amazing 360° views of the savanna and jungle. Sunrise is especially incredible. The trail is well-marked—from downtown Puerto Carreño, it takes about 20 minutes.
Next, I spent 3 nights at Rancho Barú. About an hour by boat from Puerto Carreño, you get off at Casuarito, and someone from the lodge picks you up by motorcycle for a 30-minute ride. The ranch is in the middle of the savanna, with a river/rapids beach just a 5-minute walk away. You can also fish—bites come quickly. For the lodge, one night (room or hammock) with shared bathrooms, three meals included, one excursion, plus the round-trip motorcycle ride costs 245,000 COP. An extra night without an excursion is around 100,000 COP, but you need to let the lodge know in advance so they can prepare enough food—there’s absolutely nothing for miles around.
After those 3 great days at the ranch, I took a canoe to cross into Venezuela, since Casuarito is right across from Puerto Ayacucho. The crossing costs 10,000 COP, but I got shaken down by Venezuelan immigration, who invented a violation and made me pay $40 USD. Puerto Ayacucho didn’t inspire me much. The city felt sketchy, with many hotels closed. Dealing with currency exchange was the hardest part—you *must* bring cash (USD or Colombian pesos), know the exchange rate, and find someone with enough money to exchange with you. It took me at least 2 hours. I stayed in a decent hotel downtown for $20 USD a night, but I’ll admit that going out at night—even in Puerto Ayacucho—felt pretty dodgy. All the buildings have bars on the windows, and there weren’t many people outside. I didn’t linger and found my plans to continue south too complicated. The next day, I took a bus across the country to the Brazilian border at Santa Elena de Uairén. The trip took a day and a night, with countless military checkpoints where they made everyone get off, unload all the luggage, etc. Not exactly a fun ride.

But selfishly, they’re also helpful for me—to put the final stone on each journey and revisit it from time to time, just for the memories...
So, this trip won’t be any different, and I invite you to follow along on our Andean adventure, from Lima to the Southern Lipez, from December 16, 2016, to January 14, 2017. It’s a chronological journal because I don’t know how to approach it any other way. It doesn’t hold any absolute truths—just my experiences and feelings, which are obviously personal and not objective!
But if it inspires you to visit these magical countries (and I assume you’re already interested if you’re here) or gives you a couple of tips, then I’ll consider it a win!

I’m currently looking for a bike to do my first bike trip across France, with the ultimate goal of cycling through Latin America. I’ve got a lot of questions and I’d love to hear if you have any answers or advice to share. First off, I’ve been through this before with hiking. I want to get top-quality gear right away. When I started hiking, I ended up buying everything three times—first beginner gear, then intermediate, then expert, etc. For biking, I’d prefer to skip that process and invest right now in a bike that could ideally handle Latin America. I’ve set a total max budget of around 5000 € (roughly 4000–4500 € for the bike and the rest for accessories: panniers, helmet, cycling shorts, etc.).
So, I’ve got quite a few questions:
* I’ve read in several places that some people recommend buying the bike directly in Latin America. Since I need a first bike to train in Europe, would it be better to buy an entry-level bike in France (and sell it before the big departure)? Or is it preferable to start right away with my final bike to get used to it? Is buying it there just to save a bit of money?
* For a long-term trip (around six months) in Latin America, is it better to go for a gravel bike or a mountain bike?
* Should I buy a new bike or a refurbished one? Even more so given that I’m planning a long trip—could a refurbished bike end up causing more breakdowns?
If you have any advice on models, technical features to prioritize, or recommended sellers or resellers, I’d love to hear it. I’m a total beginner—I’ve only just started watching videos and reading up on the subject, and all the technical specs are new to me!

Sure, it’s not as exotic or off-the-beaten-path as other Indonesian islands (the Moluccas, Timor, Flores...), but we spent 3 weeks there and loved it!
Our (planned) itinerary in 7 stops: - Ubud (4 nights) - Sidemen (2 nights) - Gili Meno (3 nights) - Amed (2 nights) - Pemuteran (4 nights) - Munduk (2 nights) - Jatiluwih (2 nights)

We booked our accommodations in advance, and for the rest (drivers, activities...), we took it day by day with help from the homestays (making sure to contact them a few days ahead via WhatsApp).
In the end, it’s an “easy” destination, very affordable, and one that’s managed to keep a certain authenticity.

J'aurais voulu poster un carnet de voyage avec notre itinéraire et quelques conseils que j'aurais aimé trouver moi-même, mais comme notre voyage s'est mal terminé, je vais surtout parler de notre expérience traumatique à Santa Marta.
Nous avons préparé depuis plus d'un an ce voyage, le premier aussi loin avec nos deux enfants (3 et 7 ans). Nous nous sommes calés sur les vacances scolaires en ajoutant une semaine avant et une semaine après, en accord avec les écoles de nos enfants (programme de rattrapage scolaire que nous avons suivi !).
Arrivée Bogota et environs (Zipaquira, Guatavita) 4 jours

Pour certaines excursions, nous avons alterné : un adulte avec notre aîné, l'autre restant au calme avec la petite. Très bon système qui nous convenait très bien, et permettait de faire des choses assez difficile sans se mettre en danger et en prenant notre temps, au rythme des enfants tout en profitant.

Cartagena et îles voisines : 5 jours

C'est là que notre voyage a mal tourné. Nous avons été victimes d'une agression très grave à Santa Marta, un homme nous a menacés avec une bouteille en verre cassée, drogué sans doute, il a pris notre fils "en otage" puisque c'est lui qu'il a attrapé et menacé tout d'abord. Nous avons donné nos affaires, mais alors que nous sommes tous les deux calmes et habitués au voyage (beaucoup de voyages seuls ou en couple pour mon conjoint et moi). Mais dans cette situation, nos enfants hurlaient et nous avons été totalement été submergés, larmes et nerfs à vif, malgré la nécessité de rester calmes pour les enfants. Un autre voleur que nous n'avions pas vu nous a arraché des bouts de vêtements, pour voir si nous avions des poches ou des ceintures de voyage. Les cris ont attiré des policiers, les voleurs sont partis, il y a eu des coups de feu sans que nous puissions voir la suite, ce qui a augmenté le traumatisme. Nous étions dans un état second, il fallait prendre en charge les enfants, c'était vraiment très dur, les mots manquent pour décrire. Il était 17heures. Nous avons été pris en charge par la police. Mais on ne nous a pas rendu nos affaires, ce qui laisse penser que le voleur n'a pas été arrêté. Au plan matériel, rien de grave puisque nos passeports n'étaient pas sur nous, seulement des photocopies, et rien de grande valeur dans nos sacs. Nous pensions le soir même demander un rapatriement, et après une nuit d'hésitation nous avons décidé de terminer notre voyage, sans plaisir il faut le dire. Les derniers jours à San Gil puis Villa de Leyva ont été les pires journées de voyage, car la peur ne nous quittait plus Nous avons pensé que poursuivre le voyage atténuerait le traumatisme ("life goes on"), mais ça l'a peut-être prolongé ou accentué. Quelques jours après le retour, nous reprenons une vie "normale", mais les nuits sont difficiles. Je ne porte aucun jugement sur la Colombie, c'est la vie, c'est le destin, mais le souvenir en restera plus qu'amer pour nous.

I recently took a six-week trip to Mexico with Y, my Thai partner. To be precise, we spent 43 days there plus a final half-day before heading to Mexico City Airport for our return flight to Europe.
I’d already been to Mexico about 40 years ago! But that was only for a week or so, between Mérida and the Belize border.
First off, I should mention that I’ve never seen a beach in Mexico. I say this because discussions about Mexico always seem to revolve around the Costa / Riviera Maya.
Let’s start with an overview of the trip. Our itinerary can be split into two halves:
- First half: Querétaro, San Miguel de Allende, Morelia, Guanajuato, Mexico City “CDMX” (the capital). - Second half: Palenque, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapa de Corzo, Oaxaca, Puebla, Cholula, and finally Mexico City CDMX.
To move from one part of the trip to the other, we took a flight from Mexico City CDMX to Villahermosa, then a bus to Palenque.
In six weeks, we visited maybe a quarter or a fifth of the country (see the attached maps). Mexico is about three times the size of France! And when I say “visited,” it was really just a quick stop—enough to get a first impression. I understand that some people can only spend one or two weeks on vacation in a given country, but that’s not my idea of travel. Personally, I’d say a country as rich in every way as Mexico deserves several months of travel before you can say you’ve “seen” it.
In my next post, I’ll break down the expenses. That might help future travelers plan their trips. You don’t go to a country for several weeks (or more) without thinking about the budget! Besides, one of those future travelers to Mexico is us—we were so thrilled by Mexico that we’re definitely going back.

J’ai beaucoup utilisé les différents carnets publiés sur ce forum (Rinanella, Lalee, Tberney…) et demandé des informations (Mimimicha, Alexval2...) pour préparer mon voyage, je viens donc apporter tout naturellement ma petite contribution 😊.
Outre le fait de relater notre séjour au Mexique, je vais essayer de donner un maximum d’informations utiles afin d’aider les futurs voyageurs 😉.

Comme chaque année, nous prenons nos vols secs pour la destination choisie pratiquement un an à l’avance afin d’avoir des tarifs compétitifs car pour un départ en Août, c’est l’escalade des prix. Début Octobre, nous avons profité d’une offre intéressante Paris / Cancun à 733€ avec Air Canada 😎.
Au mois de janvier, j’élabore un programme : une grande boucle de la péninsule du Yucatan, et un peu de Chiapas (Palenque) puis une semaine cool sur la Riviera Maya. Ce programme était un peu ambitieux, mi-juillet quand je le regarde enfin en détail, je me rends compte qu’on allait courir un peu beaucoup. Du coup, modification des réservations des hôtels en ôtant les deux nuits prévues à Palenque. Tant pis le Chiapas sera pour une prochaine fois 🤪.
Voici dans les grandes lignes, le programme: 31 juillet : Arrivée, nuit à Cancun 1er août : Direction Holbox 2 août : Repos à Holbox 3 août : Rio Lagartos, nuit à Valladolid 4 août : Chichen Itza, nuit à Izamal 5 août : Merida, nuit à Uxmal 6 août: Ruta Puuc, nuit à Uxmal 7 août : Direction Campêche 8 août : Calakmul, nuit à Xpujil 9 août : Fin de la boucle, nuit à Bacalar 10 août : Lagune de Bacalar 11-18 août: Playa del Carmen

Je commencerai par vous raconter mon voyage, donc décollage de Roissy prévu pour 2O heures, ce 26 décembre. Une demie heure avant, annonce, nous ne partirons qu'à 23 heures 30, pas d'explication pour le retard. Départ à minuit, arrivée sur le bateau à 6 heures 30, à Louxor. Le guide nous demande d'être prêts pour 8 heures, pour partir visiter le temple de Karnak. 🙁Donc, pas de valise défaite, pas le temps de changer de vêtement, ni de prendre une douche. Les yeux hagards, j'ai visité le temple, mais ne me demandez pas de vous en dire plus que ce que vous verrez sur les photos, j'étais dans les choux, et n'ai rien écouté.
J'ai juste regardé, mais heureusement quelques jours plus tard, j'ai assisté aux sons et lumières, la reconstitution de l'arrivée du pharaon dans la ville était superbe.
J'ai tout de même retenu que ce temple de Karnak, fut anciennement le grand centre religieux d'Egypte, et grand lieu de culte d'Amon.
Très séduit par l'allée des sphinx, et impressionné par les colonnes, les hièroglyphes et les peintures, conservées après tant d'années.

Je commence donc avec ma contribution sur la base d'un court séjour dans l'Utah (USA) début août
J'adore les parcs nationaux Américains (Rocheuses USA et Canada particulièrement) mais j'avoue qu'ils ne m'ont jamais vraiment inspiré photographiquement au moins pour trois raisons : 1 / Je ne suis pas très doué en photographie de paysages (je préfère les personnages) 2 / La luminosité dans l'Ouest américain en été est très violente et il est quasiment impossible de faire des photos "acceptables" entre 10 heures du matin et 5 heures de l'après-midi, même avec un filtre polarisant. 3 / Face à ces beautés naturelles, on a tendance à "pondre" sans modération de la "carte postale" banale, identique à des milliers de clichés que l'on peut trouver partout sur Internet... ceci à moins d'être un résident de l'Ouest américain et de pouvoir profiter des meilleures conditions climatiques pour saisir l'instant idéal (voir en particulier les superbes photos d'Ansel Adams et Tom Till sur le sujet 🙂🙂)
J'ai donc essayé de sortir des sentiers battus (A l'instar de "SOS, femmes battues" on devrait créer en photographie "SOS, sentiers battus" !😉) en jouant essentiellement sur les belles lumières naturelles, et je vous soumets les cinq photos ci-dessous : Photo 1 : Lever de soleil sur Salt Lake City Photo 2 : Nuit à Moab Photo 3 : Ciel d'orage sur Arches National Park Photo 4 : Coucher de soleil sur Arches National Park Photo 5 : Ciel d'orage sur Capitol Reef National Park

We’re planning a 15-day family trip in February 2026 (with 3 teens). We’ll be visiting friends who live in Puebla. Initially, I was thinking of the Yucatán, but after reading up on it, I don’t think it’s the right fit for us (too crowded, too touristy). So, we’re leaning toward something like this: - Mexico City: 2 days (Teotihuacán + city) - Puebla: 3 days - Tehuacán: 2 days (to break up the trip—is this a good choice? Is there enough to do for 2 days?) - Oaxaca: 3 days (Hierve el Agua, Monte Albán, city/tours) - Pacific Coast: 4 days (snorkeling, excursions)
Does this seem balanced? We’d like to end on the coast for some relaxation, ocean time, and fun for the kids. I’ve seen lots of excursions offered along the coast but can’t decide where to stay. Puerto Escondido? Huatulco? The beaches seem better for snorkeling in Huatulco, but I’ve read mixed things, and it’s farther away. What do you think?
For transportation, is this doable by bus? I’m struggling to find a decent bus between Tehuacán and Oaxaca (overnight schedules), and I’m not sure how to get around the coast. Also, how do we handle luggage between cities? We usually rent a car.
Finally, I’d love feedback on the Pacific Coast excursions—I get the feeling some are worth it and others aren’t. Is bioluminescence really magical? Are dolphin-watching tours ethical and not too "factory-like"? (We skipped them in Quebec and just watched whales from shore.) Can you see sea turtles up close?

Come along, I'm taking you to this country where it's so nice to wander and slow down...This trip was in 2023, but when I wanted to write my travel journal, VF was still closed to contributions... So, now that I've just finished my Japan travel journal here, I figured it was high time to honor this destination we came back from so enchanted. Disclaimer 1: This is a written travel journal. There’ll be text! Too much, for some! Disclaimer 2: This is an illustrated travel journal. There’ll be photos! Too many, for some!
I have to say, every time I try to discipline myself, to keep it shorter, to include fewer photos... I end up adding more. It feels like my dear Aunt Nicole, who exhausted us with her slide-show evenings in the 70s/80s, decided to take her revenge. The upside for you, readers, is that you can slip away anytime without offending Aunt Nicole. I won’t even notice!
Anyway, since I love maps, here’s one to give you an idea of where I’m taking you. As you can see, we only saw a tiny part of Laos (the areas circled in red); we only had 3 weeks for ourselves (my husband’s newly retired, I still work), and we prefer taking our time over rushing around like crazy.

In broad strokes, it was very classic:
First, we “settled in” at Luang Prabang (8 days), because we wanted and needed to. From there, we took three days to venture a little further north—not far in kilometers, but as we know, distances aren’t just about km! Then we flew south to Paksé, letting ourselves drift down to the 4,000 Islands while stopping by the pre-Angkorian archaeological sites. We wrapped up with the Bolaven Plateau.
A few practical notes: We arrived via Bangkok, then took a Bangkok-Luang Prabang flight, having picked up our luggage in Bangkok to check it in for Luang Prabang. No issues—the Bangkok airport, which many of you know, is very well organized. We got our visas on arrival in Luang Prabang. Quick, but to be fair, we were on a “small” plane, and the big flights had arrived earlier, so we weren’t too crowded in line! At the end of our trip, we didn’t fly out of Paksé but from the nearby airport in Thailand, Ubon Ratchathani (a 2.5-hour drive from Paksé), then Bangkok and Paris. You’ll notice we skipped Vientiane to stay longer in Luang Prabang. That said, there’s now a high-speed train between Vientiane and Luang Prabang—good to know—and soon the (Chinese) train will go all the way to Bangkok and even Kuala Lumpur!
With that intro out of the way, let’s dive into the heart of the matter. To be continued: Slowing down the pace... in Luang Prabang

Pas sûr que ce soit la bonne période pour poster un carnet de voyage, les feuilles de route doivent être prêtes pour celles et ceux qui envisagent ce genre de périple. Mais bon, ça servira pour plus tard 😛
Données générales Période du voyage : du 1er au 22 Août 2015.
Nous : un couple 56 ans, touristes « lambda ». En ville : pas trop musées. En campagne : pas trop randonneurs. Mais nous aimons prendre notre temps, nous sommes capables d’attendre ¼ d’h pour faire une photo qui nous convienne et nous apprécions également nous « perdre au détour d’un chemin ou d’une rue ». Ces remarques ne sont pas neutres car ça signifie que les temps de visites qui seront indiqués sont sans doute comparables à ceux de voyageurs qui visitent, crapahutent, mais approfondissement peu.
Les lieux visités/parcourus (ça, c’est pour les mots clés !) : Boston – Cape Cod – Salem – Quebec – Chemin du Roy – Gananoque (les Mille Iles) - Montreal – Toronto – Niagara falls – Detroit (Dearborn) - Chicago - Milwaukee
Véhicule loué : SUV Familial (surclassement) Kia Sorento. Beaucoup de place mais aucun charme. Consommation raisonnable (10, l aux 100km, soit 24 Miles Per Galon). Satisfera jusqu’à une famille de 4.
Comme les années précédentes, les points importants ont été saisis en amont dans notre GPS. Je rappellerai que ce travail assez lourd présente deux avantages : - C’est indéniablement un gain de temps et une grande sérénité sur place - C’est aussi une excellente manière de se re-questionner lorsqu’on en est à cette phase sur la pertinence et telle ou telle visite. En quelque sorte une boucle de contrôle sur ce qui avait été décidé quelques temps plus tôt !
Hôtellerie : Depuis des années, notre choix s’établit pour des hôtels petit déjeuner inclus en périphérie de ville. Pour le coût et les équipements souvent complets (réfrigérateur, micro-onde) permettant des économies sur la restauration. Réservations faites « tardivement » (fin janvier) par rapport à nos habitudes (plutôt vers novembre), mais nous aurons pu réserver à des tarifs satisfaisants. Comme pour nos carnets précédents, vous constaterez peut-être que les avis donnés sur les hôtels sont globalement positifs. Je ne pense pas être particulièrement tolérant. Non ! Ce serait même plutôt le contraire : j’aime en avoir pour mon argent. J’attribue plutôt cela à de longues recherches préalables en lisant ce que disent les forumeurs/meuses sur VF et d’autres sites nous ayant permis de faire de « bons choix » (compte tenu de nos critères).
Le budget : Il dépend bien évidemment de chacun ! Globalement pour ce séjour plutôt urbain, à part pour la location de voiture, nous sommes restés sur les mêmes bases que pour d’autres voyages plus « nature » (Parcs Nationaux) aux US.
Pourquoi cet équilibre ? Si on raisonne en $ (pour s’affranchir du taux de change), l’hôtellerie (Confer nos choix au paragraphe précédant) et les courses pour les repas nous auront coûté moins cher qu’un séjour dans les parcs, mais il faut ajouter les parkings, les visites. C’est cependant à tempérer car nous avons vraiment fait le minimum d’activités payantes. Le budget grimpera vite en multipliant les visites de musées, ballades sur l’eau, etc …
A part pour l’hôtellerie, la vie dans la province du Québec nous a semblé chère (plus chère qu’aux USA) malgré un taux de change plutôt avantageux. Suite à une première expérience de ce type en Colombie Britannique, nous avons fait le max de courses et le plein d’essence avant de traverser la frontière, c’est toujours ça de gagné !
Bonnes surprises durant ces 3 semaines en ayant bien suivi les conseils sur le forum (MERCI à vous toutes et tous !!!!) : 1) Avec un peu de recherche le budget parking en ville est resté raisonnable : 75 euros 2) Budget péage également maîtrisé : 13 euros sans jamais utiliser le pass.
Pour les incontournables : - Vol multi-destinations pour Boston et retour par Tampa (Floride) : 1335 euros par personne - Location de voiture (SUV Intermédiaire genre Ford Escape) chez Avis : 1250euros. Montant élevé, je m’en étais inquiété sur ce sujet mais ça semble « normal » dans le Nord Est. A noter que Avis, outre la sécurité apportée par une « grande marque » était bien placé côté tarifs en profitant des codes de réduction fournis par le membre jpg13 ! Merci à toi, l’Ami. - Essence 354 euros pour 4700km. Je ne sais pas si c’est la baisse du pétrole ou le développement de la fracturation hydraulique, mais au moins cher j’ai eu le Regular à $2.08 le galon !!! (soit 0,5 euros du litre !). Au Canada, compter plutôt $CAN 1,15 le litre, soit 84cts d’euros.
Important pour la location de voiture avec passage USA => Canada : Lorsque j’ai signalé à Avis que nous passions par le Canada, ils m’ont remis une attestation pour l’assurance responsabilité civile. Malgré le GPS en qui j’ai toute confiance et que je suis aveuglément, nous avions aussi la carte USA – Canada. D’expérience, ça aide parfois pour avoir une vision globale (parcours alternatif, choix de dernière minute, …). Et pour rêver aux destinations passées et/ou futures lors des pauses !
Vu le sujet et par respect pour nos ami(e)s Québéquois(es) qui se battent pour le maintien de la langue Française, j’ai essayé de supprimer le maximum d’anglissismes ! Exercice intéressant, pas toujours facile, je l’avoue ! Désolé si je n’y suis pas toujours parvenu 😊

Nous : un couple 56 ans, touristes « lambda ». En ville : pas trop musées. En campagne : pas trop randonneurs. Mais nous aimons prendre notre temps, nous sommes capables d’attendre ¼ d’h pour faire une photo qui nous convienne et nous apprécions également nous « perdre au détour d’un chemin ou d’une rue ». Ces remarques ne sont pas neutres car ça signifie que les temps de visites qui seront indiqués sont sans doute comparables à ceux de voyageurs qui visitent, crapahutent, mais approfondissement peu.
Les lieux visités/parcourus (ça, c’est pour les mots clés !) : Boston – Cape Cod – Salem – Quebec – Chemin du Roy – Gananoque (les Mille Iles) - Montreal – Toronto – Niagara falls – Detroit (Dearborn) - Chicago - Milwaukee
Véhicule loué : SUV Familial (surclassement) Kia Sorento. Beaucoup de place mais aucun charme. Consommation raisonnable (10, l aux 100km, soit 24 Miles Per Galon). Satisfera jusqu’à une famille de 4.
Comme les années précédentes, les points importants ont été saisis en amont dans notre GPS. Je rappellerai que ce travail assez lourd présente deux avantages : - C’est indéniablement un gain de temps et une grande sérénité sur place - C’est aussi une excellente manière de se re-questionner lorsqu’on en est à cette phase sur la pertinence et telle ou telle visite. En quelque sorte une boucle de contrôle sur ce qui avait été décidé quelques temps plus tôt !
Hôtellerie : Depuis des années, notre choix s’établit pour des hôtels petit déjeuner inclus en périphérie de ville. Pour le coût et les équipements souvent complets (réfrigérateur, micro-onde) permettant des économies sur la restauration. Réservations faites « tardivement » (fin janvier) par rapport à nos habitudes (plutôt vers novembre), mais nous aurons pu réserver à des tarifs satisfaisants. Comme pour nos carnets précédents, vous constaterez peut-être que les avis donnés sur les hôtels sont globalement positifs. Je ne pense pas être particulièrement tolérant. Non ! Ce serait même plutôt le contraire : j’aime en avoir pour mon argent. J’attribue plutôt cela à de longues recherches préalables en lisant ce que disent les forumeurs/meuses sur VF et d’autres sites nous ayant permis de faire de « bons choix » (compte tenu de nos critères).
Le budget : Il dépend bien évidemment de chacun ! Globalement pour ce séjour plutôt urbain, à part pour la location de voiture, nous sommes restés sur les mêmes bases que pour d’autres voyages plus « nature » (Parcs Nationaux) aux US.
Pourquoi cet équilibre ? Si on raisonne en $ (pour s’affranchir du taux de change), l’hôtellerie (Confer nos choix au paragraphe précédant) et les courses pour les repas nous auront coûté moins cher qu’un séjour dans les parcs, mais il faut ajouter les parkings, les visites. C’est cependant à tempérer car nous avons vraiment fait le minimum d’activités payantes. Le budget grimpera vite en multipliant les visites de musées, ballades sur l’eau, etc …
A part pour l’hôtellerie, la vie dans la province du Québec nous a semblé chère (plus chère qu’aux USA) malgré un taux de change plutôt avantageux. Suite à une première expérience de ce type en Colombie Britannique, nous avons fait le max de courses et le plein d’essence avant de traverser la frontière, c’est toujours ça de gagné !
Bonnes surprises durant ces 3 semaines en ayant bien suivi les conseils sur le forum (MERCI à vous toutes et tous !!!!) : 1) Avec un peu de recherche le budget parking en ville est resté raisonnable : 75 euros 2) Budget péage également maîtrisé : 13 euros sans jamais utiliser le pass.
Pour les incontournables : - Vol multi-destinations pour Boston et retour par Tampa (Floride) : 1335 euros par personne - Location de voiture (SUV Intermédiaire genre Ford Escape) chez Avis : 1250euros. Montant élevé, je m’en étais inquiété sur ce sujet mais ça semble « normal » dans le Nord Est. A noter que Avis, outre la sécurité apportée par une « grande marque » était bien placé côté tarifs en profitant des codes de réduction fournis par le membre jpg13 ! Merci à toi, l’Ami. - Essence 354 euros pour 4700km. Je ne sais pas si c’est la baisse du pétrole ou le développement de la fracturation hydraulique, mais au moins cher j’ai eu le Regular à $2.08 le galon !!! (soit 0,5 euros du litre !). Au Canada, compter plutôt $CAN 1,15 le litre, soit 84cts d’euros.
Important pour la location de voiture avec passage USA => Canada : Lorsque j’ai signalé à Avis que nous passions par le Canada, ils m’ont remis une attestation pour l’assurance responsabilité civile. We’ve decided to head to Quebec next year—it’s been a dream for the whole family (after watching so many travel shows and the like...). There’ll be five of us: 2 adults, 2 teens (16 and 13), and a child (8 years old). We’re all pretty good walkers, though maybe the teens a little less so—it’s just that age, you know? 😊 That said, they’ve got no problem doing 15 km hikes, just not every single day.
We’re planning to go from July 23 to August 14, arriving and departing from Montreal, so almost 3 weeks. I’ve started looking into logistics and accommodation prices, but before I dive into bookings, I’d love some advice on the itinerary. I’ve read a few threads here and there. Our idea is to visit between 3 and 5 different places over the 3 weeks, so that means the same number of accommodations. The goal is to optimize travel as much as possible—I’ve realized that getting around can take a long time. I think the first two days will be in Montreal to adjust to the time difference, and the last two in Quebec City, though that’s not set in stone.
Anyway, I’m not really sure about the route. I’ve got time to plan everything, but I know the longer we wait, the more expensive and scarce accommodations will get. Same goes for budget—we’ve set aside a mid-range budget, flights included: 3k per person (1k for the flight). So if you’ve got any great tips or advice, we’re all ears!
I was thinking of going up the St. Lawrence River, but I’m not sure how long that takes or where to stop. Maybe there are other places worth visiting farther away...

This one-month trip, from January 18 to February 17, 2026, allowed us to visit Mexico City and travel through the states of Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. We mainly used buses (ADO company) for medium and long distances and colectivos or taxis (or Uber) for shorter trips. Before leaving, I had contacted several people on the ground: Harry, a Vendéan settled in Oaxaca offering, among other things, discoveries of artisan villages or the Monte Albán site, and Oscar in Comitán de Domínguez. I’ll come back to our meeting with Oscar, who runs a local agency (CVL Travel Turismo Alternativo & Corre la voz) and owns a very pleasant hostel, a real highlight of our trip. Our journey took place in 8 stages on a loop starting from Mexico City. The connections between each were made by day or night buses depending on the trip duration. I had booked our seats in advance, either directly on the ADO company’s website or through booking platforms depending on the rates offered. Note that by planning ahead, I was able to benefit from very interesting "Early Booking" rates. There are several comfort classes. For all our trips, I had booked seats in Primera class buses, except for two in GL (Grand Luxe) class. The rates are very reasonable, and the buses turned out to be comfortable or even very comfortable (only the basic seat recline might surprise you).
Our itinerary and number of days per stage: Stage 1 – Mexico City: 4 days Stage 2 – Puebla: 2 days Stage 3 – Oaxaca: 4 days Stage 4 – San Agustinillo: 4 days Stage 5 – San Cristóbal de las Casas: 3 days Stage 6 – Comitán de Domínguez: 6 days Stage 7 – Palenque: 4 days Stage 8 – Mexico City: 2 days If I were to do it again, I’d remove one day from Palenque and add it either to Puebla or San Cristóbal to visit nearby sites or villages, or to San Agustinillo to enjoy one more day by the Pacific Ocean.
Stage 1: Mexico City (2,200 m / 9.2 million inhabitants) We arrived in the Mexican capital around 10:00 PM. The simplified customs process was very quick. After exchanging some money at the airport, we took a taxi to our youth hostel. We got around the capital on foot, of course, but also by metro. Signs are very rare, and we took the train in the wrong direction several times. After a few mistakes, we systematically asked on the platform if we were going the right way. The metro is very affordable. You need to get a rechargeable card (the Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada) and top it up as needed. This card (less than 1 €) isn’t personal, so there’s no need to get one per person.
Mexico City: Day 1.

Visits and walks of the day (note: many museums are closed on Mondays): The Zócalo or Constitution Square: it’s one of the most beautiful, largest (195m x 240m), and oldest squares in the world. This is where Cortés decided to build the center of the new Spanish city on the site of the former Tenochtitlan market. Stones from the pyramids were used to pave the esplanade and build the surrounding colonial churches and buildings. During our visit, the huge square was covered with (resin) cacti, the theme of the temporary exhibition at the time. Indeed, temporary events or exhibitions take place here throughout the year. It’s also the endpoint for many protest marches.





The cathedral: it’s sinking by one centimeter per year despite massive stabilization work (the collapse of many Mexican buildings—30 cm/year—is due to groundwater pumping). It was built starting in 1571 and completed in... 1813. The modest remains of the Templo Mayor (exterior view): they have high symbolic value, as this monument was the most important in the Mexica Empire.
We then walked through the streets of the historic center to the Santísima Church, unfortunately closed for renovation work.
Next, we took the metro to visit one of Mexico’s most important pilgrimage sites: the Insigne y Nacional Basílicas de Santa María de Guadalupe, as well as the Capilla del Cerrito on the hill.
The first, dating from the colonial era, is really leaning a lot.
The second, shaped like a rotunda, is very impressive from the inside.

In the basement, there’s a sacred tunic where, in 1531, an image of the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared. A real mystery for scientists, the garment has never deteriorated since that date. Slow-moving conveyor belts allow pilgrims to admire it, preventing crowds from gathering in front of the image for hours. Well thought out!
From the top of the Capilla del Cerrito, you get beautiful views of huge Mexico City.

I imagine many of you have been captivated by the Masai Mara park and/or your safari experience with Tony Crocetta/Melting Pot Safari. Still, I’d like to share my perspective. First, I’m an avid traveler, especially in love with Africa, which my partner and I have explored a bit (Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Namibia...). That said, I want to express my deep disappointment with both the Masai Mara and Tony Crocetta’s camp, Melting Pot Safari, where we stayed last year.
First, about the park: it’s stunning, no doubt. But what a highly touristy place! I can’t find the words to describe the horror of being among 30 4x4 vehicles lined up in front of a lioness hunt, let alone encircling her right after her kill while her prey is still alive in her jaws... no respect for wildlife. The same goes for surrounding a young leopard playing with its small prey, a moment when I counted over 50 vehicles, most with their engines running... sickening. I turned away, both my gaze and my camera. What a disaster to see this natural wonder of Africa turned into a tourist hotspot.
Yes, I loved this place on Earth, but no, I won’t "promote" it anywhere or to anyone.
Next, I also wanted to share my dissatisfaction with Tony Crocetta’s famous camp, Melting Pot Safari: where to begin? We booked a private vehicle for four with two friends, and I have no complaints about the vehicle itself (though it obviously came at a cost). The windows and the vehicle weren’t very photo-friendly, but let’s move on. The trip between the sisters’ guesthouse (which was fine) and the camp went smoothly, except we arrived a bit too late. Result: "We’ll leave for the safari an hour later today because the driver has to respect his rest hours." Perfect—with park formalities, we only spent about an hour in the park that evening. The safari got off to a great start... During our 12-day stay, we saw some amazing things. Tony wasn’t at the camp—I don’t know what the atmosphere is like when he’s there, but it was rather cold during our trip. Sylvie, his wife, barely looked at us, never asking how our day, night, or game drive went (I think she spoke to us once during the stay, plus the day we arrived, of course). We felt invisible... (if I were mean, I’d say the money had already been deposited into Melting Pot’s bank account.) The evening meals, if I may say so, were a joke: not enough dessert (aside from fruit, but the few elaborate desserts—like 10 for 18 guests) for everyone, barely enough meat or sides. If you were unlucky like us and ended up with a group of 15 people who decided to skip the starter, you’d better hurry to get your main course, or there might not be any left—and no refills... We always ate our fill, but sometimes we had to serve ourselves in advance. Finally, I want to correct something about the quality of the meals: seriously, this buffet was really mediocre and far from the culinary standards I’d read about in my pre-trip research (see their Facebook page). Anyway, let’s move past the food—after all, the avocados were sublime, and we’re not there primarily to eat.
About the tent: the river views were beautiful, and the beds were very comfortable. No running water, individual showers outside the tent, and dry toilets—but it’s Africa, so we weren’t shocked. However, I’m disappointed that for this "modest" price, I wasn’t warned there’d be no soap (and no, I don’t travel with my own soap—and for the price, a little bar in the tent wouldn’t be a luxury). But let’s move on—the hippo views were fantastic. Oh, and to preserve the Masai Mara’s water (which makes sense) and for hygiene reasons, underwear isn’t washed by the camp staff—fair enough. But then what’s that little sign next to the bed? Oh right, for a hefty sum, underwear suddenly becomes "washable"...
Finally, my biggest gripe is about the essential part: the game drives. In France, they sell you a dream with a "photo safari" (what’s the difference, really? A room with a few more electrical outlets?). They promise guides especially suited for photography (not a given, sorry) and vehicles that can get close to animals and go off-road... but here’s the catch: the guides are bound by park laws and hounded by rangers looking to fine rule-breakers. Result: as soon as a white ranger vehicle is spotted, we have to abandon our spot for a wild chase through the grass. Fun once... The next day, we learned that another group’s guide got caught and had to pay $100 for breaking the rules—a sum he casually asked the travelers in his vehicle to cover... because of course, Melting Pot lures tourists with dreams, the poor rangers try to get close, all while breaking park laws... and they break those laws for Crocetta’s company, which, of course, won’t dip into its profits to pay the fines. Basically, it’s "keep the clients happy, but don’t get fined—or the fines are on you or you’ll have to ask the clients directly." Nice boss! Anyway, there were long discussions about this last year, especially among the guests in the fined vehicle. My partner and I found these practices unacceptable, and we were deeply disappointed by this attitude.
I know many people adore this park and/or this company—maybe you were luckier... or maybe you’re less demanding than we are when it comes to respecting rules, nature, and clients. But after traveling through much of southern Africa, I can tell you we personally came back frustrated from this experience and aren’t eager to return... You’ve been warned.

The next day, we learned that another group’s guide got caught and had to pay $100 for breaking the rules—a sum he casually asked the travelers in his vehicle to cover... because of course, Melting Pot lures tourists with dreams, the poor rangers try to get close, all while breaking park laws... and they break those laws for Crocetta’s company, which, of course, won’t dip into its profits to pay the fines. Basically, it’s "keep the clients happy, but don’t get fined—or the fines are on you or you’ll have to ask the clients directly." Nice boss! Anyway, there were long discussions about this last year, especially among the guests in the fined vehicle. My partner and I found these practices unacceptable, and we were deeply disappointed by this attitude.
I know many people adore this park and/or this company—maybe you were luckier... or maybe you’re less demanding than we are when it comes to respecting rules, nature, and clients. But after traveling through much of southern Africa, I can tell you we personally came back frustrated from this experience and aren’t eager to return... You’ve been warned.
This adventure began during Covid... Yep, Covid turned a lot of things upside down, but most of all, it kept us cooped up for a few months and stopped us from traveling for a while—even longer for a die-hard fan of the American West like me.
While borders were closed, I started imagining what an ideal itinerary might look like—one that would string together all the Southwest must-sees in just two weeks, during the best time of year: September and October. When the U.S. announced in September 2021 that borders would reopen in the coming weeks, I regained hope and began scouting flight tickets for a departure in September 2022.
But here’s the thing: tackling solo hikes, each one tougher than the last, right in the heart of the Wilderness, could be a risky—even reckless—endeavor for a father of three. After a quick chat with some virtual friends who are just as passionate about the Southwest as I am, with good physical condition and nearly the same list of must-visit spots, Franck and his brother Sullivan were in! 🙂
In November, we snagged flight tickets from Nice to San Francisco for the modest sum of 400 €, and a few days later, I booked a Toyota Tacoma pickup for 840 € !
It’s not cheap for just 15 days, and a pickup isn’t exactly ideal for luggage, but the prices for full-size 4x4s have become totally outrageous! Due to border closures, rental companies had to offload a lot of these big 4x4s, which tourists love. Then, supply and demand did the rest !
Franck and I spent the winter and spring trying to cram the equivalent of three weeks of hikes into two. But even with physical limits, we had to stay reasonable! Three to four months before departure, we entered the lotteries for different must-see spots: The Subway, Coyote Buttes North (home to the famous Wave), and Coyote Buttes South (CBS).
The Wave is the holy grail for any Southwest enthusiast. Since 2015, we’ve tried our luck with the online and on-site lotteries about ten times, but the spots are unfortunately limited: just 20 per day. A glimmer of hope, though—since early 2022, that number has increased to 64 people allowed per day, with 48 spots awarded via the online lottery.
After all three of us tried our luck for The Wave, on June 1st at exactly 5 PM, I got an email that started with, "Congratulations! You were successful in the Coyote Buttes North (The Wave) September 2022 Permit Lottery at Coyote Buttes North (The Wave)...". At 5:01 PM, I called Franck, whose dream it’s been for over 20 years—ever since the first photos were published in a travel magazine! He didn’t believe me when I told him, and I had to forward the email for him to finally accept the unbelievable: we were going to The Wave and all the incredible spots scattered across the protected area of Coyote Buttes North.
I’ve already been to Coyote Buttes South twice, but there are areas I couldn’t explore in the middle of summer because they were too remote. So, I had no trouble letting my buddies convince me to go back for a third time. Plus, given how hard it is to access, we had no trouble securing a permit online as long as we logged in at exactly 8 PM on the dot!
For The Subway, all three of us struck out. No big deal—we won at CBN and CBS!
Among the sites to visit, there are two that I’m particularly attached to because I know my chances of wanting to see them again are slim. The first is Angel Arch, one of the most legendary arches in the Southwest, due to its remoteness from any trace of civilization. To get there, the recommended hike is Upper Salt Creek, and you’re looking at a 50 km round-trip in an area with no water (in September) and populated by bears.
The second site is the Hopi Salt Trail, in Navajo land, which, after a very tough hike, lets you marvel at the turquoise-blue waters of the Little Colorado before it meets the Colorado River. The Hopi Salt Trail is, like The Wave, the holy grail for any Southwest enthusiast, and the windows of opportunity to see the water in that magical color are very short each year. For this, you have to monitor the Little Colorado’s gauges downstream from Cameron: if the level stays at its lowest for 10 consecutive days—meaning no rain—you can hope for turquoise water. The ideal period rarely exceeds 30 days a year, and it’s usually in June that all the stars align.
But unfortunately, one month before departure, while the flow rate at Cameron looked promising, several storms in September dashed our hopes of doing the Hopi Salt Trail, even at the end of the road trip.
We still had two consolation prizes, though:
After a last-minute cancellation, while keeping an eye out for available spots for The Subway, it turned out that three spots opened up exactly on the day we’d planned to go—so we rushed to grab them!! Regarding the 4x4 rental, the prices for full-size models dropped by several hundred dollars, and we ended up finding a Chevrolet Tahoe for less than $1000. A steal and a serious boost in comfort, so we could store all our gear and food without worry!

Il arrive souvent qu'on nous demande quoi visiter en Belgique . Et les réponses ramènent le plus souvent à Bruges , Gand, Anvers et Bruxelles , avec raison , ces villes valant la peine d'être visitées 😉 . Toutefois, la Belgique, bien que petite , ne se limite pas à ces 4 villes .
J'habite l'une d'entre elles ( Bruxelles) , passe avec plaisir du temps dans les trois autres , mais j'ai envie d'aborder d'autres coins moins connus , qui pourront compléter le séjour de ceux qui ont envie d'en voir un peu plus , ou de voir autre chose . C'est qu'entre deux voyages , j'aime bien visiter l'un ou l'autre coin du pays où j'habite .

Retour a Buenos Aires Vol pour les Chutes d'Iguazu (Argentine, Bresil)

On aimerait louer une voiture d'El Calafate a Buenos Aires. Les prix ont l'air prohibitif (drop off fees) mais sur place n'est-ce pas meilleur prix (une estimation?)? Et si vous avec des adresses d'agence pas cher nous sommes preneurs.
