Troisième road trip en 4X4 en préparation pour Août, après 2007 et 2012 . Arrivée en milieu de journée a JNB le 29/07, pour plus de confort nuit sur place. Je pense attaquer directement par le KTP pour 4/5 jours que l'on adore, avec si possible deux nuits en satellite camp, souvenir d'une expérience inoubliable à Garaghab. C'est là que ça se complique, on aimerais bien aller faire un tour en Namibie ou au Botswana avant de finir par le Kruger pour encore 5/6 jours. Vol retour le 13/08 au départ de JNB.

Et voilà... Nous voilà repartis sur un nouveau voyage en perspective auquel on a pas pu résister. En effet, Qatar Airways avait lancé une offre de 10 000 billets gratuits (juste les taxes à payer) pour les soignants (je suis infirmière) On n’a hélas pas réussi à avoir un code promotionnel mais quelques semaines plus tard on a reçu un code promotionnel à 50% et on a saisi l opportunité. Sur le fil du rasoir, on a réussi à avoir deux billets aller retour et on s est décidé pour 15 jours dans la région du cap en Afrique du Sud du 16 au 30 novembre. Il y a évidemment un risque d annulation si COVID-19 mais les billets seront alors reportés. On part donc sur un road-trip en 4x4 avec matériel de camping pour alterner nuits en camping et hôtel. On va se concentrer sur la région du Sud et je suis donc preneuse de vos lumières... A vos stylos !!!

Hi, I’m starting to plan a great trip for the last three weeks of January 2027 (my first time in South Africa). After spending a few hours (!) browsing this forum, here’s a rough first draft of my itinerary:

D0 Arrival at JNB D1, D2 Blyde River Canyon D3, D4, D5, D6, D7: Kruger D8, D9, D10: St Lucia and surrounding area D11, D12, D13, D14: Drakensberg + Lesotho

D15 A very long driving day to the south (hope the AC doesn’t break down!)

D16, D17, D18, D19 southwest coast (so far I’ve noted Oudtshoorn, Robberg Nature Reserve, Wilderness NP, De Hoop Reserve, and a bit of the wine route) D20, D21 Cape Town (peninsula and a bit of the city) + domestic flight and return flight (departure from JNB at 11 PM)

A few questions before refining this: - Do you see any major issues with this itinerary?

- We don’t have a choice on dates, and personally, I prefer green landscapes to desert ones anyway, but do you really see far fewer animals in January than in the dry season? Five days in Kruger should give us enough time to spot plenty of different animals despite the tall grass, right? As for the heat, we’re from Réunion, so we’re relatively used to it, even though I know it’s not the same type of heat.

- Can I trust the distances and driving times given by Google Maps?

- Picking up the vehicle in Johannesburg and dropping it off in Cape Town: how much might that cost us? I’m thinking it probably won’t be worse (in terms of time or money, since there are five of us—2 adults + 3 kids) than going back to Joburg after Lesotho, taking a flight to Cape Town, and renting another vehicle... but maybe I’m wrong.

- Finally, wouldn’t it be better to focus on just one of the two regions (either the northeast or Cape Town and the south coast)? If it were up to me, I’d stick to the first part and extend a few stops... but not everyone agrees! And we’re thinking that since it’ll be really hot, a second part of the trip that’s a bit """cooler""" would be welcome.

Hi everyone, I’m reaching out today to gather some great tips for the second part of our trip to South Africa, which will take place from 03/21 to 04/11. We don’t want to rush too much either. We’ll start in Cape Town (tickets already booked) since it seems like a good time to visit this region—except for the whales in Hermanus, which we won’t be seeing. Oh, and I almost forgot, we’re renting a car for both legs of the trip for more freedom.

The first part is planned like this:

- 03/21: Arrival in Cape Town, staying until 03/24 - 03/25: Visit to the Cape, including a stop in Simon’s Town - 2 nights in Stellenbosch from 03/26 to 03/28 - 3 nights in Knysna to explore the area from 03/28 to 03/31 - 03/31: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Durban, where we’ll spend one night in Umhlanga

After that, I’m a bit lost 🙂. Next, I was thinking of doing:

2 nights in St. Lucia 2 nights in Eswatini 4 nights in Kruger Park (2 nights in Skukuza and 2 nights in Balule to visit a private reserve) 1 night at Blyde Canyon 1 night somewhere to get closer to Johannesburg (Graskop?) since we’ll need to return the car by around 11:00 AM on 04/11.

So, does the second part make sense or not? I’ve done quite a bit of research, but I’m still a little lost . We can’t wait to be there, and your valuable advice would be very welcome. Thanks so much in advance, and have a great day! Luis

Hi there, In two months, I’m heading off for 4 weeks with three backpacker friends to South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. We’ve got our round-trip flight tickets from France to Johannesburg and plan to drive from Johannesburg to Cape Town and back to Johannesburg in an SUV or 4x4. For other city trips, we’ll use local transport or Uber. That’s the plan for our transportation.

For the car rental, I’d like to know which company to book with. Can anyone give me some tips on renting a vehicle and crossing into Lesotho and Eswatini?

Next, I’ve put together a rough itinerary that seems good to me, but could you share your experiences and maybe point out any mistakes I’ve made?

Hello, I’m taking advantage of the forum reopening to ask this question:

For her 70th birthday, my mom will receive—as a gift—a trip to South Africa at the end of May 2025. We’ll arrive and depart (13 nights later) from JNB on Air France AF990/AF995. We’ll obviously rent a car for certain parts of the trip. I’ve been to the Cape Town area and as far as Agulhas twice, but she’s never been to South Africa before. She might enjoy a day or two of safari, but it’s not a priority for her. I’m well aware that trying to pack in too much is risky, which is why I’m looking for your advice on itineraries, safety, and health (status of the Marburg virus). So far, which combinations of these visits (in no particular order) would be doable and most enjoyable for her at a reasonable pace:

1-day excursion to Pilanesberg Park (+ Hartbeespoort on the way back if possible), self-drive or with a tour guide? 2 nights around the Panorama Route self-driving Garden Route from/to George/PLZ for 5 nights (what are the must-sees for a first-timer with so little time?) Wine region for 2 nights (is it worth doing both the Stellenbosch bus tour and the Franschhoek Wine Tram the next day, or vice versa)—she loves good wine! Cape Town for 2 nights (is it worth stopping at the Cape of Good Hope if—only if—you’ve maybe already been to Agulhas?).

This would give a final itinerary like this:

Day 1: Morning arrival in JNB—rest day/to be defined Day 2: Guided game drive excursion to Pilanesberg Park Day 3: Flight JNB–Port Elizabeth, pick up rental car, drive to Tsitsikamma Day 4–6: Garden Route: activities to be defined Day 7: Transfer to Franschhoek: Wine Tram in the afternoon Day 8: Taxi to Stellenbosch for the Vine Hopper bus tour Day 9–11: Transfer to Cape Town: activities to be defined Day 12: Flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit or Nelspruit Day 13: Visit the Panorama Route Day 14: Flight from Hoedspruit or Nelspruit to JNB, then evening flight back to France

Given the time spent on the Garden Route, what are the must-sees? Same question for the Panorama Route? In general, she prefers beautiful walks with incredible landscapes/views and cultural visits over big cats, but it would be a shame not to see some local wildlife like meerkats, whales (I doubt it in May), or penguins during her stay! Et j'aimerais qu'ils voient les animaux dans leur milieu naturel comme j'ai pu le faire il y a fort longtemps et dans un autre pays d'Afrique de l'ouest. Ce pourquoi mon séjour de 10/12 j max, portera principalement sur les visites de réserves. J'arriverai probablement (je n'ai pas encore les billets lol) à Johannesburg vers 5h du matin par Quatar Airways. Si vous avez des retours sur cette compagnie, je suis preneur. Voici donc les questions que je souhaiterais vous poser. 1/ En sortant de l'avion je vais louer une voiture. Quelle agence me conseillez vous et quel type de voiture pour visiter les parcs. Il est évident qu'à 4 + bagages il nous faut du volume mais un 4x4 ou pas ? Quels sont les pièges à éviter ? Le permis français suffit-il ? 2/ Je veux rapidement quitter Johannesburg (dès location VL) pour trouver un coin tranquille, sympa et sur la route des parcs, pas trop loin de l'aéroport (40/50 km env) pour se poser et se reposer une journée avant d'attaquer la visite des parcs le lendemain. Avez vous des hôtels ou appartements airbnb à nous conseiller ? 3/ Les parcs... J'ai analysé le pass proposé mais vu que je ne reste pas assez longtemps je ne pense pas que ça soit très intéressant. Sauf erreur de ma part, il vaut mieux que je paye les séjours en direct. 3a/ Quels parcs valent vraiment le coup où nous sommes sûrs de voir les big five et autres animaux ? 3b/ Quelle formule prendre ? Passer par une agence pour visiter parc avec rangers et formule tout inclus ? Si oui avez vous des contacts ? Quel est le coût ? (à peu près) Dois je prévoir plusieurs jours sur le même parc ? Est-ce que les parcs privés sont vraiment plus intéressants ? Quels parcs privés me conseillez vous ? (contacts svp) 3c/ dormir dans les parcs ça me semble pas mal. Mais quelle formule et à quel coût ? 4/ En partant de la zone des parcs, quels sont les sites à surtout ne pas louper, qui nécessitent pas des déplacements de milliers de kilomètres ? Le Cap ne m'attire pas plus que ça et de toute façon vu le timing, il faut que je fasse des choix. Le Switzerland c'est bien ? 5/ Pour moi l'idéal serait le suivant : Passer par l'agence de chaque parc qui me fournirait couchage et repas + exploration du parc avec guide à bord de leur gros 4x4 adapté à ces visites si particulières. Ca existe ? Avez vous des contacts ?

Nous sommes déjà allés 4 fois en Afrique du Sud et souhaiterions y retourner en début d'année prochaine. J'avais pensé aller aussi au KTP mais je crois que les hébergements se réservent presqu'un an en avance. Pourriez vous nous le confirmer, y a-t-il un plan B?

Pour l'Afrique du Sud, la terrasse côtière occidentale au départ de Cap town en montant jusqu'à Pella (c'est pour cela que le KTP me tentait) et ensuite redescendre par le great Karoo. Je ne suis qu'au début de ma réflexion, nous connaissons Cap town mais n'avons jamais visité le nord de cette magnifique ville. Merci de vos commentaires, je suis preneuse de toute suggestion.

Hi everyone, I’m in the middle of planning our trip/safari to Kruger in October: - 2 nights in the Manyeleti private reserve (Honeyguide Montobeni) - 2 nights in Kruger for a self-drive safari (which reserve, or where to stay?) - 1 night at Blyde River Canyon (where?) - 2 nights in the Balule private reserve (Imagine Africa Luxury) Then heading to CAPE TOWN. So as you’ve probably guessed, I’m not sure: - where to stay for the BRC and need lodge names - coming from Manyeleti and heading to the BRC, which strategic spot in greater Kruger to choose (I was thinking Satara, not too far) but couldn’t find any available places for October on Sandparc - and which domestic flight destination for Manyeleti from JNB (Hoedspruit?) to arrive at Orpen Gate, - And same question for which airport to fly out to Cape Town after Balule. We’re planning our second trip to South Africa in July 2026. In 2023, we did a loop from Joburg, Golden Gate, Drakensberg, Hluhluwe, St Lucia, Eswatini, Kruger, Blyde River Canyon, and back to Joburg. This time, we’d like to go to Cape Town and do a road trip to Port Elizabeth, then fly back to Joburg to return to Kruger. At this stage of my planning, here’s what it could look like:

D1 to D4: Cape Town and Cape of Good Hope (Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Waterfront, Bo-Kaap, Boulders, Cape Point, Chapman’s Peak Drive). I’ve spotted a few places to stay between Camps Bay and Hout Bay (3 nights). D5 and D6: Either Karoo NP or Hermanus and De Hoop. Any opinions to tip the scales? I’ll admit I’m already leaning toward Karoo (the "wild" vibe of the landscapes and wildlife encounters appeal to me much more than the seaside, which feels less exotic). If we go for Karoo, where should we stay? Inside the park or in Beaufort West? I’ve seen good reviews for Ko-ka Tsara Bush Camp, but maybe it’s better to stay in the Sanparks cottages to make the most of the park? (2 nights) Option B is to do Stellenbosch (though vineyards aren’t great in winter) and/or the Whale Route—Betty’s Bay, Hermanus, De Hoop (2 nights near Gansbaai). D7 and D8: Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn. Staying at De Cango Guest Farm (2 nights). D9 and D10: Knysna, Robberg Nature Reserve, Tsitsikamma (2 nights in Plettenberg Bay and 1 night in PE). D11: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Joburg at 7 AM and drive to Marloth Park.

For Kruger, I’ve booked 2 nights in Marloth Park, 1 night in Skukuza, 2 nights in Satara, and 1 night in Talamati, which we loved. I’ll book the last night in Graskop later since we want to revisit the Blyde Canyon area.

I’d love all the feedback you can give on my itinerary, especially for days 5 and 6. If you have recommendations for accommodations for 4 people, I’d appreciate those too. Thanks! 🙂

We’re back from our 3-week trip to South Africa in July. It was a family trip with our four grown-up kids (ages 18 to 25).

First off, I’d like to thank everyone on this forum for their great tips—they really helped us plan this trip!

The trip: We spent 15 days between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, then a week around Kruger (including Blyde River Canyon). We found South Africans to be welcoming and always ready to help. We never felt unsafe (just followed basic safety rules). The police are very visible, especially on the roads.

Logistics: We’d booked our accommodations in advance but made a few changes on the spot based on how we felt at the time. We rented two vehicles from Firefly (Hertz). No complaints—recent cars, quick returns, and the deposit wasn’t charged. We’d gotten our international driver’s permits... which stayed in France! Luckily, no one asked for them. Driving on the left wasn’t an issue (it wasn’t our first time). The roads we took were in good, even great, condition. Only a few tracks to lodges or parks were rough and required extra caution. Lots of pedestrians on the sides of roads, even highways. And plenty of very slow trucks. But they pull over to let you pass. It’s also common for cars to cross into the opposite lane to overtake, even with white lines. We took two domestic flights: one early in the morning (Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth) and one in the late afternoon (Cape Town to Johannesburg) to save time.

We had some highlights and a few disappointments—all part of the journey! More details coming soon.

After going through a good chunk of the forum and travel journals about South Africa, I think my itinerary is ready...

I’ve planned 2 days with long drives to minimize time spent outside the parks. These are Sunday the 18th: Johannesburg Airport to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve, and Friday the 23rd: St. Lucia to Nelspruit (staying in South Africa) or as close as possible to visit the Canyon the next day.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary, especially these 2 days—are they doable or not? Should I book in advance, or will there be places to sleep along the way if we don’t make it to our planned destination? What’s the crowd level in South Africa in October?

As for Kruger, I’ve chosen campsites with camping facilities, prioritizing the "satellite" camps, at least in the northern part!! I’ve planned to change camps almost every day to combine travel and wildlife spotting, but is this the right choice?

Hi everyone, For those who’ve been following me... progress is being made! Anyway, just to recap for the others: I’m leaving Manyeleti (a private reserve) to do a self-drive safari in the main Kruger Park for 2 nights before heading to Blyde River Canyon (sharing all this so you can picture the route). So Satara seemed like a good base for the safari, except that you can only book accommodation in this non-private park through Sandparks to find a camp. Since Satara is fully booked, the only ones with availability for my dates are: Tamboti, Olifants, and Satara—wait, no, Satara’s full—so Letaba, sorry! Any thoughts on these camps? Because I can enter via Orpen and drive north (safari-style), which would let us explore, but: 1/ Too many km if we pick the farthest one, Letaba? If I leave Manyeleti (Honeyguide Mantobeni) after the morning safari, what time do I need to be at the camp by?

Nous sommes partis avec nos 2 choupettes (bientôt 2 ans pour l’une et 6 mois pour l’autre). On a fait l’impasse sur le parc Kruger car on voulait éviter le palu.

Sur l’itinéraire : Parfait. Chaque étape nous a permis de trouver des activités pour la plus grande. Logements adaptés à la famille et bien situés. A Cape Town : tour de la Péninsule (merci à Échappée Australe pour l’itinéraire), Table Mountain, Manchots. Nous avons zappé Robben Island et les musées par rapport aux enfants. Stellenbosch : promenade en ville (magnifique) et restaurant dans les vignobles Hermanus : baleines et promenade Oudtshoorn : Autruches. Wilderness : Repos et plage (mais pas baignade car eau trop froide en Septembre) Plettenberg : Sanctuaires (singes, oiseaux, prédateurs) recommandés par l’agence de voyages Port Elizabeth : Manchots (on ne s’en lasse pas) et safaris

Sur Échappée Australe : Échanges productifs. Joignables facilement. A l’écoute. Très bon conseils pour les activités et les restaurants. Carnet de voyage précis et bonnes adresses. Choix des logements parfaits. Il y a de nombreux logements dans chaque ville. Nous avons rencontré quelques Français qui étaient mal tombés niveau logements (je n’ai pas demandé avec quelle agence ils sont partis). Nous c’était génial ! Voiture ok avec siège bébé et enfant (on a opté pour un SUV, plus cher mais plus spacieux).

L’Afrique du Sud est un pays magnifique. Nous y retournerons quand les choupettes seront plus grande pour faire les safaris. Vous pouvez y aller avec vos enfants. Échappée Australe nous avait rassuré sur le sujet : le pays possède des infrastructures très bonnes et des pharmacies dans toutes les villes. I was thinking of continuing the questions from my first post, but since the title was changed... I’m starting a new thread

The plane should land on Saturday around 11 AM. After collecting luggage and the car, I think we’ll leave the airport between 1 and 2 PM. Question #1: Where should we stop along the way, allowing some buffer time so we don’t end up driving at night if the flight is delayed? (The idea isn’t to sightsee but just to take a break while making progress toward Kruger.)

We’ll spend part of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (a little over 4 days) in Kruger. Questions #2 and beyond: What route should we take? I’ve considered two options: either enter from the south (Malelane Gate?) and head north up to the Olifants area to exit at Orpen Gate. How many accommodations should we book in this case, and where? Or enter at Orpen Gate and exit near Hazyview (or the other way around, and near Hazyview, should it be Paul Kruger Gate or Phabeni?). In this case, it would allow us to spend 2 nights in one place and 2 in another, but we’d skip the south (or is it possible to visit it in a day?) Well, for accommodations (accessible by sedan), all suggestions are welcome… but I’ve checked October availability, and there aren’t many left 😕 I plan to spend Thursday in the park and exit before it closes to sleep outside, which would save time the next day for the drive to the airport. I was thinking of Hazyview (again, no sightseeing since we already visited the area in 2009), but do you have another/better idea?

For clarity, here’s a summary of the Kruger part: Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg and drive to ? Day 2: Enter Kruger (likely late morning or early afternoon) Days 3, 4, and 5: Kruger with exit at the end of Day 5 Day 6: Drive to the airport for the Cape Town and surrounds portion

Regarding Kruger bookings, it seems (I lost my old notes when my hard drive crashed—I backed up work documents but not vacation ones, what a mess!) that you can monitor reservations, and if a preferred accommodation becomes available, you can book it and cancel the old one. Is that still the case? (And is it easy to do?)

Thanks in advance for your answers. I’m off to reread travel journals about Cape Town and will probably be back with more questions (the accommodation availability issue seems less urgent there, so less of a priority).

Bonjour, je prépare un voyage en Afrique du Sud. Atterrissage à Johannesburg, direction Blyde River Canyon, Kruger, Swaziland, Santa Lucia, Lesotho et ensuite direction Cap Town en longeant la côte. J'aurai aimé avoir plus de renseignement sur le temps de route entre Santa Lucia et le Lesotho. J'ai loué une voiture de type ford fiesta mais pas de 4*4. Peut-on faire la route en 1 jour entre Santa Lucia et lesotho (ou je n'ai pas de réservation pour le moment) ou faut il faire une pause entre les deux destinations ?

hi, after a 13-day trek between Drakensberg, Lesotho, and the Wild Coast that’ll end in Durban, I’d love to extend the fun for a few more days (4 or 5) by heading to a reserve. Ideally, it’d offer not just the usual daytime 4x4 safaris but also "morning walks." I’ve already explored the coast up to St Lucia and done Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, iSimangaliso… so I’d prefer to head south or west instead. It’d also need to include pickup and drop-off at Durban airport—I don’t feel like renting a car that’ll just sit unused for days.

I’ve done some research and narrowed it down, and Springbok Lodge (Nambiti Game Reserve) caught my eye. => Anyone familiar with it—what do you think? => Any other suggestions? I’d like to avoid Phezulu—it feels more like an amusement park—and Shongweni Nature Reserve seems more focused on family-friendly activities.

For safaris, we’re definitely bringing binoculars, but do you have any advice? I’ve heard that a 10x42 model is the way to go, but prices vary a lot. Hi there. We’ll be in South Africa at the end of February ’26 with a rental car—not a 4x4. What’s the best route between Kosy Bay and the southern part of Kruger Park? Is the Mozambique route via Maputo a good option? What are the formalities for crossing into Mozambique? Is the Kosy Bay area worth a detour? We’ll be entering Kruger from the south for 4 days. Any recommendations for routes/campsites? Lower Sabie, Satara? Do we really need to book accommodations in Kruger in February? And what about safaris? Thanks for your input! Franz

J'ai commencé à faire un itinéraire et je voulais avoir des avis car nous ne sommes jamais allés en Afrique du Sud * Johannesburg - 2 jours * Pilanesberg - 3 jours * Ukutula - 1 jour * Vol Joburg - Le Cap * Le cap : Table mountain, Boulders Beach, Stellenboch, Hermanus - 4 jours à voir après pour une éventuelle extension balnéaire au Mozambique

3. Comment sont les pistes et les campings du Khaudum National Park ?

4. Quelles région du Khaudum National Park est la plus sympa en paysages et animaux ?

5. Naye-Naye Concession Area vaut-elle une petite visite ?

6. Même question pour le Mangetti National Park ?

7. Depuis Okaukuejo quelle est la meilleure solution pour rejoindre Purros ? Nous pensions faire Opuwo - Orupembe - Purros - Palmwag !

8. Pour faire des photos astronomiques quelle serait la région la plus propice : le NamibRand ou le Spitzkuppe ?

I’m really interested in traveling to South Africa in September 2020. My question is whether I should go on an organized tour or plan my own itinerary. Organized trips are pretty expensive $$$$, but the security aspect reassures me. I’d love to hear your thoughts on safety in South Africa and whether it’s easy to arrange activities like visiting vineyards, Cape Town, and going on a safari on our own. Which is better in terms of cost—booking an organized trip or doing it ourselves? It’s definitely less exciting to follow a group for 10 days. We’re a couple in our 50s who love nature. 😊🦁
