Hello everyone, what a pleasure to be back on this forum!

My partner and I are heading to Japan for the first time from mid-December to mid-January for 31 days. It’s a long-held dream we’ve been saving for over two years, and we want to enjoy ourselves while also being mindful of our budget for parts of the trip. We’d love to explore Tokyo, but we’ve chosen to spend more time in nature. My partner plans to get his driver’s license translated locally so we can rent a car. We’ve heard from friends who’ve been that Japan isn’t the best place for improvisation, so we’ve tried to allow plenty of time in each location to avoid rushing. Still, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary we’ve planned—whether it’s feasible in terms of travel and how interesting it seems. Given the recent increase in the JR Pass price and the fact that we’ll spend about ten days on Goto, Ojika, and Yakushima (where the JR Pass doesn’t cover travel), we don’t think it’s worth it for us. Instead, we’re planning to take the train from Tokyo to Fukuoka and then use buses and ferries for the rest of Kyushu. Here’s our itinerary:

1- December 13 / Arrival in Tokyo, one night in Tokyo, then departure for Fukuoka by train on the morning of the 14th.

2 - December 14-16 / 2 nights in Fukuoka, sightseeing, then departure on the evening/night of the 16th by ferry to Ojika Islands.

3 - December 17-21 / 4 nights on Ojika, cycling and exploring, then departure on the 21st by ferry to Fukue on the Goto Islands.

4 - December 21-24 / 3 nights on the Goto Islands, renting a car to explore, maybe a trip to Hisaka. Departure for Nagasaki by ferry on the morning of the 24th.

5- December 24-26 / 2 nights in Nagasaki, visiting the city and memorials, possibly the hot springs in Unzen. Departure on the evening of the 26th by bus or ferry (?) to Kumamoto.

6- December 26-29 / 3 nights in Kumamoto, sightseeing, day trip by car to Mount Aso and surrounding areas. Departure on the 29th in the late afternoon by bus to Kagoshima, overnight in Kagoshima.

7- December 30 to January 2 / Morning departure by ferry to Yakushima for 3 nights, hiking and exploring the island. Departure on January 2 on the only ferry (?) in the early afternoon back to Kagoshima.

8- January 2 to 5 / Uncertain leg... We’d like to spend the night of the 4th to the 5th at a ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen and then head back to Fukuoka and Tokyo by train on the 5th. From the 2nd to the 4th, since we’ll arrive in Kagoshima in the late afternoon, we thought we could head back up to Kumamoto by train or bus—going to Yufuin or Beppu would take much longer and leave us with very little time. But is it worth staying another 2 nights in Kumamoto to explore the area, given we’ll already be there for 3 days from December 26-29? Or should we stay in Kagoshima and head up to Kurokawa Onsen on the afternoon of the 4th for our overnight stay?

9- January 5 to 13, Tokyo and its endless things to do and see, then back to France!

After several trips to Tokyo and the surrounding areas, as well as Osaka Bay, we’re heading to Northern Kyushu for a week in mid-October (we’ll be in China the other week). We’re a couple with two kids, aged 7 and 9. We’ll arrive at Saga Airport and plan to stay there for a few days to explore Arita, Imari, Karatsu, Hirado, and Dazaifu. We’re thinking Saga isn’t too touristy, so it might be a good choice to find accommodation for 3 or 4 days there and immerse ourselves in a typical Japanese city in the evenings with fewer tourists. 1) Is this a good idea?

My second question is: 2) What are the best neighborhoods in Saga where I can find accommodation (preferably an Airbnb) with free parking but still close to the city center, please? 3) Would you recommend Fukuoka instead?

4) Here’s my first draft of the itinerary:

Saga Airport (we leave straight away) → Beppu Onsen (2-hour drive, we stay one night + Mount Yufu) → Kurokawa Onsen (we stay one night + Mount Kuju) → we pass by Mount Aso (just a drive-around and short walk) → then we go to Suizenji Jojuen in Kumamoto (park in a paid parking lot nearby) → return to Saga in the evening, where we stay this time. Stay in Saga for 3 or 4 nights in an Airbnb with convenient parking in the city center, not too far out, and explore the surrounding areas (Imari, Arita, Karatsu, Hirado, Dazaifu...).

Saga to Nagasaki (minimum 2 nights, ideally 3). Then return to Saga. 5) Same question: where to stay in Nagasaki in accommodation where we can park the car for free and be near or easily accessible to the city center? 6) For all these places, what do you recommend doing with the kids?

Nous aimerions partir au Japon en septembre prochain et si possible sans agence! Nous avons déjà beaucoup voyagé à travers le monde de cette manière mais, nous étions beaucoup plus jeunes et ''ce n'était pas au Japon''. Mes questions sont d'ordres pratiques, à savoir : Le Japon se visite de manière itinérante, donc refaire les bagages tous les deux ou trois jours et prendre le train ou le bus etc, ! Si l'on se trouve à Tokyo par exemple, comment fait 'on ? un taxi , un bus ou autre mais pour se rendre où et à quel endroit ? Il doit y avoir une multitude de gares ou d'arrêts de bus dans cette immense ville ou l'anglais n'est pas courant ? Ne perdons nous pas trop de temps à chercher ce que l'on doit faire et comment le faire ? Est-ce vraiment pratique pour des personnes de 70 ans , même si l'on est en pleine forme… C'est vraiment la chose qui me turlupine, c'est devoir être sur le trottoir sans vraiment être sur de trouver de l'aide et de se perdre . Le Japon, ce n'est pas New-York ou Paris voir même Bangkok, c'est vraiment un endroit des plus dépaysant qui ne ressemble à aucun autre endroit dans le monde. Je voulais ajouter que nous sommes très très visite, nous prenons tout notre temps pour chaque endroit donc les voyages en groupe ne sont pas notre tasse de thé ! Bref ... A few friends and I are planning our trip to Japan for next autumn. This will be my first time traveling, which is why we’ve decided to go for a big trip of at least 2 months, maybe even 3.

So far, we’ve estimated the budget to be between 7,000 and 10,000 € per person for the stay. I’m not sure if that’s too high or too low, considering we’ll be moving around a lot.

Here’s a summary of the route we’d like to take:

First, we definitely want to visit the classics like Tokyo, Kyoto, etc. Then head toward Mount Fuji with Fujiyoshida and the surrounding area. We’d also like to visit some less touristy, more authentic spots like the Wakayama region. We’d like to check out some mountain or countryside villages like Shirakawa-go for a few hikes. We’re still debating whether to visit Miyajima and Hiroshima since we’re not sure we’ll have enough time. And we sadly had to cut Hokkaido from our list for the same reason.

I won’t go into every detail since we’ve mapped out over twenty places, but those are the main highlights.

As for our travel style:

We want to take our time. Not try to cram in as much as possible without any breaks or enjoyment. Most of the time, we’ll be staying in Airbnbs and youth hostels. For food, we’ll mix it up between restaurants, pre-made meals, and cooking our own. For transportation, we’re considering renting a car to reach villages in the countryside. (I’m a bit nervous about the road rules over there.) For activities, one or two a day seems reasonable. (Both free and paid ones.) But I have no idea how much souvenirs might cost. I’ve often read on forums that it’s between 200 and 600 €?

My questions:

So, that’s the plan. We’re not sure yet if we’ll go for two or three months. It’ll mostly come down to money. We want to be mindful of our budget but still treat ourselves—no regrets about missing out on an activity or restaurant we really wanted to try.

Do you have any advice or suggestions for us? What do you think of our itinerary? For flight tickets, I’m estimating between 650 and 900 € for a round trip. Does that sound about right? But I have no idea which airline to choose?

My wife and I are heading to Japan from March 27 to April 22, 2025. On the evening of the 21st, we’ll be staying in Tokyo to catch our international flight. For this first trip, we’ve prioritized a fairly classic itinerary. Here’s the plan:

- Osaka (arriving at Kansai Airport) - Hiroshima - Itsukushima (also known as Miyajima) - Kyoto - Nara - Kanazawa - Shirakawa-go - Takayama - Tokyo

We’ll likely finish our sightseeing in Tokyo around March 17.

We’re thinking of heading somewhere "quiet" or "by the sea," maybe an island, between the 17th/18th and the evening of the 21st.

What are your thoughts or experiences?

Pensez-vous qu'il soit possible de tout visiter? Je ne sais pas trop comment organiser mon itinéraire par rapport aux distances des villes. Mes centres d'intêrets sont la visites de temples, les toris sur la mer, les rizières , les plantations de thé, être proche des habitants, la nature...

Je cherche aussi un ryokan assez sympa mais pas hors de prix mais je ne sais pas dans quel endroit il vaut mieux le prendre.

I’m visiting Tokyo and the Five Lakes region, as well as Kyushu, in February-March. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed when it comes to choosing onsen and ryokan.

-I’d love to find a nice onsen and possibly a great ryokan in the Five Lakes region to relax a bit after visiting Tokyo.

-I’m also looking for some lovely onsen/rotenburo in Kyushu, as well as a nice ryokan to wrap up our little trip.

Unfortunately, I’m completely lost among all the options. Do you have any recommendations for me?

For Kyushu, I’d love to find an onsen where the outdoor baths are really surrounded by nature. And if possible, a mixed-gender bath so I can enjoy it with my partner (or a private bath, but I get the impression private baths are never outdoors?). As for the ryokan budget, 450 € per night is unfortunately the absolute max...

Hi everyone, I’m Julien! This summer, from late June to late July, I’m planning a one-month solo trip to Japan—my first time! I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice on the itinerary I’ve put together to explore this amazing country.

Here are the routes I’m considering:

**Option 1: More mountain and nature-focused**

Tokyo: 8 nights, with day trips to Nikko and maybe the Izu Peninsula Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi/Mt. Fuji): 1 night. The place looks stunning, but I’m worried Mt. Fuji might not be visible due to the weather Kyoto: 6–7 nights (including a trip to Nara) Osaka: 1–2 nights, where I’d like to drop off my things to make the Kumano Kodo easier Kumano Kodo: 3 nights—an experience I haven’t seen much elsewhere, but I thought it sounded really interesting Hiroshima: 2 nights Miyajima: 1 night Takayama: 3 days Kanazawa: 3 days (From what I understand, the Osaka–Takayama–Kanazawa–Tokyo route is convenient for transport) Tokyo: 1 night (return)

**Option 2: More varied but a bit vague in parts**

Tokyo: 8 nights Kyoto: 7 nights (+ Nara) Osaka: 2 nights Kobe + Himeji: just passing through—I’m not sure if it’s worth a night Naoshima: 1 night—still pretty unclear for me Takamatsu: 2 nights. An interesting city, but I’m not sure how long to stay Shimanami Kaido: biking from Imabari to Onomichi, then heading to Hiroshima Hiroshima: 2 nights Miyajima: 1 night Kyushu road trip (Aso + onsens + Fukuoka): 5 nights (also pretty vague—I could fly from Fukuoka back to Tokyo) Tokyo: 1 night

1) What budget should I plan for 15 days, given that hotels with breakfast, transfers, and transport are already paid for? I know it depends on the person, but I’d love a rough idea. For meals, we’re thinking simple street food or small local restaurants.

2) I’ve heard that credit cards (we each have a Revolut + 1 Visa Premier) aren’t widely used and that it’s better to have cash. Can you confirm?

3) Are foreign credit cards still not accepted at bank ATMs? Still 7-Eleven or the Post Office? And what about American Express?

I just lightened my wallet by 3000 € for 3 tickets: Paris > Tokyo > Osaka > Paris (well, not just mine—I’m exaggerating, there are two of us). For my daughter’s 10th birthday, we’re heading to Japan—it’s her "decade gift," though I thought she’d pick London🏴‍☠️. But I’ve been dreaming of going back to Japan since my 2013 trip, so I’ll admit this trip is (a lot) for me too. We’re traveling during school holidays, so the ticket prices are unfortunately sky-high. Maybe I could’ve gotten a better deal if I’d waited, but who knows... oh well, it’s done now. We leave at the end of October, so we still have a few months to prepare. That said, I’d rather start early to make sure we don’t miss anything (like the Ghibli Museum—I couldn’t go last time, and anyway, I’ll have to wait until September to book). Last time, there were three adults, so it was pretty straightforward. Eleven years later, well, now it’s two adults with a 10-year-old😛.

So I’m wondering how many days to spend in Tokyo. My daughter idealizes the city (that’s why she wants to go to Japan), and she’s really drawn to Japanese culture and food. Actually, what first got her interested in Japan were all the *kawaii* character products... Tokyo is such a fascinating city, but it can also be exhausting—especially for a kid, and I’m not sure what to expect. Beyond Tokyo, honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I was thinking of Hakone and maybe stopping by Fujikyu Highlands. Then heading down to Osaka for a few days in Kyoto before flying home (our return flight is from Osaka). We only have 11 days there (not counting the arrival day, and since our flight leaves at 11:30 PM on departure day, we’ll have the whole day), so it’s not a ton of time. I already spent a week in Kyoto on my last trip (huge crush on it), and I’d love to have two months there, but... well, you know how it is.

For example: 5 days in Tokyo 2 days in Hakone 4 days in Osaka/Kyoto

What do you think? If you’ve done this trip with kids, do you have any tips for family-friendly accommodations in Tokyo and Hakone? My daughter would love to try an onsen. We have a decent budget, but it’s not unlimited. We’d like to book as we go to spread out the costs a bit.

Bonjour, nous partons (un couple et deux enfants de 8 et 13 ans) treize jours au Japon en fin d'année : - 5 nuits à Tokyo (arrivée le 21 décembre à Tokyo Haneda) - 3 nuits à Kanazawa - 4 nuits à Kyoto (vol retour le 2 janvier vers Paris depuis Osaka Kansai) Les vols sont réservés ainsi que les logements.

C'est un premier voyage au Japon, voici quelques questions :

1 - j'ai une petite appréhension concernant la météo, quel temps peut-on trouver dans ces trois villes ? J'ai vu que l'hiver était plutôt sec et froid mais avec quelle températures ? Neige à coup sûr à Kanazawa ?

2 - Comment est Kyoto à l'approche du nouvel an (nous y serons du 29/12 au 2/01) ? Musées et boutiques fermés ? Beaucoup de touristes ? Le Pavillon d'Or est-il pris d'assaut même en cette période ou c'est plus calme ?

3 - A Tokyo, nous logerons entre les stations Ikebukuro et Otsuka ? Est-ce un bon choix ?

Lors de la préparation du 1er voyage l'an dernier, le Tohoku était une des régions que je souhaitais vraiment découvrir mais il a fallu faire des choix en tenant compte du parcours global.

Bref, je me demande si le budget à prévoir en général et pour les hébergements au Tohoku est moins élevé que dans les autres régions vu que moins touristique, tout type de logement confondus ?

Quelle est la meilleure saison pour visiter cette région ? Sachant que je ne me vois pas conduire sur des routes étroites avec de la neige ?

Pour les onsens, est ce dans le nord ou sud de cette région que les onsens sont les plus beaux en termes d'environnement paysages ?

18 avril: Départ de Kyoto en fin de journée pour Nara. 2 nuits / 2 jours à Nara (avec les temples au sud de Horyu-ji, Toshodai-ji et Yakushi-ji)

20 avril: Départ de Nara en fin de journée pour Ise. 2 nuits / 1,5 jour sur place

22 avril: Départ vers midi de Ise pour Nara puis pour Koya-San. 2 nuits / 1 jour sur place.

24 avril: Départ le matin pour Tanabe, puis Hongu: Kumano Kodo. 2 nuits / 1,5 jour sur place.

26 avril: Départ le matin de Hongu pour Osaka. Visite de la ville. 1 nuit (départ le 27 au matin).

Nous savons que pour beaucoup Tokyo est l'endroit à ne pas manquer, mais actuellement ce qui nous intéresse ce sont les temples, la nature, les villages, etc. C'est donc un choix conscient que nous avons fait pour ce premier voyage de ne pas aller jusque là-bas...

I’m planning to return to Japan for 15 days in April. This will be my second trip there. I’m starting to think about my itinerary.

I arrive in Tokyo in the evening and will spend one night there before taking the train to Hiroshima. I’ll stay in Hiroshima for 2 nights. Then, I’m heading to Kyoto (there are still so many beautiful things I want to see there), and I think I’ll stay for 3 nights. I also want to go back to Nara to visit the Pink Temple (probably in the morning before heading back to Kyoto).

And after that? I’d like to return to Hakone to try and catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji (I didn’t see it last time—it was cloudy). I’m thinking of staying one night there, probably in Odawara.

And then? I’ll head back to Tokyo and take the train to explore the surrounding areas and spend the day at some sites?

While in Tokyo, I want to visit Yokohama. I went to Kamakura last time and really loved it, but I don’t think I’ll go back.

I’ll end my trip in Tokyo, with my second-to-last night at the Muji Hotel and my last night near the airport.

bonjour, nous envisageons de partir quasi un mois au japon de mi mai à mi juin 2020. Notre fils étant sur place nous souhaitons bien sur lui rendre visite. Il est dans sur l'ile d'Okaido, mais nous voulons en profiter pour visiter les incontournables de ce pays, une première pour nous. J'ai bien sur regarde les brochures touristiques mais j'avoue ne pas savoir par ou commencer. Je pense que nous arriverons à Tokyo en premier. mais après dans quel sens cela est il le plus judicieux (selon les sites incontournables ) (monter sur le nord ou descendre vers le sud avant de remonter sur Okaido pour repartir ensuite en direction de Tokyo ? nous aimerions utiliser les transports en train et louer une voiture pour avoir plus de liberté. Nous sommes plutôt nature que ville mais il y a des villes à ne pas manquer non ? Que me conseillez vous au vu de vos expériences japonaises ? merci à tous.

J'ai besoin de retours d'expérience sur la conduite au Japon et plus particulièrement sur les îles de shikoku, Kyushu et miyakojim et yakushima. Je serai là-bas en octobre prochain et ai prévu des locations de voiture. Néanmoins j'ai certaines interrogations et appréhensions après avoir lu certains blogs ou guide. Je n'ai jamais conduite à gauche et avec une voiture automatique mais bon ça, je pense que ça ne devrait pas poser de problème. Ce qui me fait douter c'est que j'ai le vertige et les routes de montagnes comme à shikoku ne le rassurent pas. Les routes sont elles étroites au Japon ? Il y a t'il bezucoup de circulation en octobre ? Voit on bezucoup les ravins? Y'a t'il bezucoup de route très pentues en montée ou en descente ?

Commencent par miyakojima, j'espère me familiariser avec la conduite à gauche.

Nous sommes à finaliser notre voyage Taiwan - Japon en avril 2020 et il nous reste la portion de 5 jours à organiser à Ishigaki.

Nous désirons visiter Ishigaki, Taketomi et Iriomote.

C'est sur la planification que nous avons besoin d'aide:

Devrait-on demeurer toujours à Ishigaki et prendre les traversiers pour visiter les 2 autres îles ? Ou, demeurer 2 ou 3 jours à Ishigaki et réserver pour 1 ou 2 nuits dans les autres îles ? Est-ce facile de louer une auto à Ishigaki ?

Nous sommes un couple et préférons la randonnée et les visites intéressantes aux plages.

Nous allons tout de même planifier 1 ou 2 sorties de plongée en apnée.

Tout autre information est le bienvenue (suggestion d'activités, hébergements et restos intéressants, etc.

Day 1: Arrival in Fukuoka in the evening at 7:30 PM

Day 2: Fukuoka city

Day 3: Ukiha (car or train?)

Day 4: Itoshima

Day 5: 11/01/2024: Okawa, Omuta (forge), and Yanagawa for the Yanagawa Hakushu Matsuri. A bit ambitious for a single day?

Day 6: Arita / Owakachiyama / rice fields in the evening: Is it better to go from Fukuoka to Arita by car or train?

Day 7: Sasebo + Kujukushima Pearl + fireworks show Day 8: Karatsu (Yobuko market + cave + cape) + Matsuri Kanchi Day 9: Kashima + garden + Tara Day 10: Higashi Sonogi, overnight in Nagasaki. Is it better to return the car in Arita or Nagasaki? Day 11: Nagasaki Day 12: Nagasaki, overnight in Fukuoka, so departure by train from Nagasaki Day 13: Munakata and Oshima, and in the evening, Hanabi Kama

Day 14: Mount Hiko, Toho, Soeda. Is there a pottery village? With or without hands-on experience?

Day 15: Yame (Hoshino tea visit) and Kurume Masure workshop

Days 16, 17, 18, 19: Fukuoka city and maybe Nokonoshima or Kitakyushu

Any suggestions? Does this seem balanced?

What a joy to be back on this forum that I’ve browsed for so many years :-)!

I’m heading to Japan with my partner in November 2025. This will be my second trip there and his first.

I was planning to go from Tokyo to Matsumoto, which I haven’t visited before, and from there, check out Shirahone Onsen and then hike from Magome to Tsumago. However, after reading several travel journals, I’ve realized that the village of Shirakawa-go and its surroundings look amazing. Back in 2006, I visited Takayama, which I loved, but I don’t want to stay there again.

To visit the places mentioned above (Shirahone Onsen, Shirakawa-go, Magome, and Tsumago), I’m thinking that a car might be more convenient than public transport, especially for getting from Shirakawa-go to Magome. Could you confirm if that’s the case? If so, is it easy to rent a car for a few days to do a loop starting from Matsumoto?

Bonjour, J'ai trouvé un appart-hotel dans le quartier d'asakusa. Les commentaires sont très positifs, il offre l'avantage d'avoir du personnel dans les lieux en cas de problème mais offre également une plus grande liberté (pas d'obligation d'aller manger au resto tous les jours) avec sa cuisine et une machine à laver, supermarché à proximité. Bref, ma question est la suivante: l'hotel se situe à 500 mètres d'une station de métro mais pas à proximité d'une gare. Est-ce vraiment gênant sachant que j'ai prévu de visiter Tokyo mais également ses alentours? Je n'ai pas encore d'itinéraire précis en tête mais je sais déjà que je passerai la moitié de mon voyage à visiter Tokyo et alentours avant de me rendre à Kyoto pour visiter la ville et également les alentours. Et je souhaite déjà réserver mes pieds-à-terre dans ces deux villes pour plus de sécurité. Merci

bonjour , nous avons comme projet avec ma femme et des amis ( nous seront 6 au total) de partir au japon et plus precisément a tokyo au mois de mai 2020 (du 11 mai au 22 mai a peu pres) Probleme nous sommes plutot novice dans les voyages mais cette destination est un reve pour nous tous . mes questions sont : - Connaissez vous une agence de voyage avec laquel operer ou si'il est mieux d'acheter un billet d'avion et reserver un logement ( AirBnB?) - quel est la moyenne des prix des restaurant sur place par personne ? ya t'il des restaurants au specialité europeenne ? (oui l'un de nous est assez difficile ^^) - Est il simple de se deplacer facilement ? (nous voudrions fortement allez a akihabara) - La barriere de la langue est elle compliqué? - quel securité peut on avoir si nous avons un probleme? qui appelé? etc.. (exemple de si on ne part pas avec une agence de voyage) -Y'a t'il des bars ou restaurant ou la communauté des voyageurs francais se reunissent ? j'ai encore beaucoup de question comme quoi visité etc mais je ne vais pas vous embetez plus.
