We’re heading to India in March 2026 and had planned to visit the parts of the Meenakshi Temple that are open to non-Hindus. However, the temple is currently undergoing major renovations—with all the towers covered in scaffolding—which might really take away from the experience and our stop in Madurai.

After some frustrating and vague online searches, and before we reshuffle our itinerary, I’d love to know—if possible—the most accurate expected completion date for the renovation work.

Cela fait longtemps que je lorgne du côté de l'Inde mais je ne me suis jamais senti prêt ... mais là ce serait peut-être le moment.😊 Après avoir hésité entre le Radjastan et l'Inde du Sud c'est finalement le centre qui a retenu mon attention. Je l'imagine moins touristique et je suis tombé sur des photos d'Ellora qui m'ont énormément plu 🙂.

En cherchant j'ai trouvé un axe, une logique: faire Mumbay - Delhi, avec de multiples arrêts.

Voici ce que cela donnerait, j'ai mis en gras les lieux qui m'inspirent le plus. Mumbay Ellora Ajanta Mandleshwar mandu Sanchi Khajuraho Panna NP pour faire un safari ... avec l'espoir de croiser un tigre Orchhad Gwalior Agra New Delhi (plus pour rejoindre un aéroport international)

Qu'en pensez-vous ? Je dispose de 13/14 jours max. J'aurais bien aimé glisser quelques trajets en train, entre quelles étapes est-ce possible? intéressant ?

Au niveau climat: Octobre, février ou Avril selon vous ?

Comme je ne connais pas du tout, tout autre conseil, renseignement sera le bienvenu

- MADURAI le 16/03 matin - départ le 20 matin - KODAIKANNAL le 20/03 fin milieu d'après midi - départ le 24 - THANJAVUR Entre le 24 et le 28 visite de Tirichirapalli / Tajore /Kumbakonam est il possible de voir traquillement ces sites en si peu de jours? je préfère voir que 2 sites et prendre mon temps que voir tout et bâcler les visites... dans quelle ville séjourner ? Thanjavur ou trichy? le choix de ces sites est il un bon choix ou il y a mieux? le site de mahabalipuram m'a l'air pas mal non plus. - FIN DU VOYAGE A PONDICHERY le 28 /03 et retour le 01/04 (avion le soir à Chenai)- envie de flâner à Pudu.... ou peut être le retour le 02/04 le soir

Ma question est la suivante : j'ai l'impression que il y a une ville en trop, je me dis que en enlevant 1 ville je serais surement beaucoup plus relax et aurait du coup moins de stress, plus de temps pour m'imprégner des lieux visiter. Or j'ai vraiment envie de voir toutes ces destinations alors selon vous, laquelle est la moins obligatoire ? sachant que je veux absolument faire rameswaram.

Je vais partir en Inde du Sud en mars 2020, je cogite donc sur l'itinéraire pour 18 jours sur place. Ce sera chargé et speed car nous souhaitons voir un maximum de choses (j'anticipe les critiques 😛). J'imagine louer une voiture avec chauffeur du jour 2 au jour 9 (arrivée à Fort Cochin).

Contraintes : - Arrivée tardive à Mumbai d'où les variantes sur le jour 1 en fonction de l'intérêt de Chennai. - Quelques jours de farniente en fin de séjour : j'étais parti sur un itinéraire Tamil Nadu/Kerala mais j'ai finalement ajouté Goa car les plages du Kerala ne me semblent pas idéales pour cela. - Nous souhaitons effectuer un trajet en train de nuit.

I’ve got a few questions about my upcoming 3.5-week trip to Tamil Nadu and Kerala (January 2025).

On the itinerary, we’re supposed to spend 3 or 4 days in Thanjavur (Tanjore). I thought the location would let us explore the surrounding area, but I’m realizing everything I want to see won’t fit into the schedule! I’d planned: 1 day to arrive from Pondicherry 1 day to go to Darasuram 1 day to go to Tiruchirappalli 1 day to head to Madurai with a stop in Chettinad Basically, we won’t see anything of Thanjavur itself! Should I skip one of the destinations?

In Kerala, after 3 days in Munnar, I’ve planned to spend a few days in Munroe Island since I didn’t get great feedback about Alleppey. I wanted to "wander" through the backwaters. Has anyone been there?

Finally, we’re ending the trip in Cherai. After booking, I realized the beaches seemed unusable (trash, rough sea...) and I’m pretty frustrated about not being able to swim. Unless there’s a better spot nearby?

Our trip through Nepal, Rajasthan, South India, and the Andaman Islands. Dates: October 26 to January 14, 2025 Departure from Geneva to Kathmandu.

NEPAL, one month. 2 days of exploring between Kathmandu and Patan. 14 days of trekking from Kathmandu to Langtang, passing by sacred lakes. Trek with a French-speaking guide and 2 porters from the local French-speaking tour operator "NEPAL VOYAGE." Ended with a helicopter ride due to a wrist fracture on black ice at 3,900m. 3 days in the hospital in Kathmandu. Continued the trip in Nepal with a self-guided stay in Bhaktapur and Pokhara. Returned to Kathmandu by plane, then flew to Delhi.

RAJASTHAN. 18 days touring Rajasthan with a French-speaking driver "RAVINDRA MENA." Highlights: Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur*, Ranakpur*, Udaipur*, Bundi, Pushkar*, Jaipur, Agra, Jaipur (Top spots marked with *). Flight from Jaipur to Kochi.

KERALA. Kochi, 3 nights—disappointing, but the Backwaters to the north by scooter were stunning and not touristy. Kochi to Varkala by Uber with a Canadian couple. Varkala, 4 nights—great for relaxing, but scooter rentals weren’t available, which was a shame. Varkala to Munroe Island by train. 2 nights in Monroe. Munroe Island to Kumilly. 2 nights on Christmas Day—meh, not much to do since all the park excursions were booked by Indian tourists. Kumilly to Munnar by local taxi, negotiated the day before. Munnar—processions, tea fields, and *so* many Indian tourists during this period that it was impossible to find scooters to rent.

TAMIL NADU Crossed Tamil Nadu from Munnar to Auroville in 3 days, stopping at the extraordinary Tamil temples of Madurai, Trichy, Thanjavur, Darasuram, Chidambaram, and others. With the lunar conjunction, pilgrimages, and year-end holidays, there were *tons* of pilgrims! Auroville to Pondicherry by scooter, then a tuk-tuk for New Year’s Eve—still *so* crowded! Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram by local bus. Mahabalipuram, 2 nights—nice and chill. Mahabalipuram to Chennai by Uber.

ANDAMAN ISLANDS Chennai to Port Blair by flight, Andaman Islands. Port Blair, 2 nights—almost too much! Speedboat to Havelock, 4 nights—still lots of Indian tourism. Couldn’t go snorkeling with a dive operator or rent gear. Luckily, we managed to buy some and do it ourselves. Speedboat to Neil Island, 3 days, 2 nights—too short, but excellent snorkeling from "Elephant, Four Wise Men." Phew, no biting flies, and we weren’t eaten by crocodiles. Back to Port Blair, then Delhi, one night, and return to Geneva.

Our impressions of India. Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu—we eventually got tired of palaces and temples. It’s always complicated and exhausting to get around on foot in the cities. During the year-end period from mid-December to mid-January, *so* many tourists! The Andaman Islands were a bit disappointing—too short, and for snorkeling, Indonesia is easier and less expensive.

Bonjour je n'arrive pas à me décider sur les étapes en bus et ça presse pour les réservations... Qatar airways pour Cochin le 1er janvier, 2 nuits (1j et demi en fait) Pourrai-je voir les backwaters de là ? Départ en bus de Cochin pour Periyar le 3me jour afin de visiter le lendemain. Mais hormis la ballade en bateau qu'y faire? (je ne suis pas bon marcheur, j'aime surtout la nature, les paysages) >aurais-je dû partir plutot sur Munnar puisque les chances de voir de gros animaux à Periyar sont minimes? >je peux toujours ajouter Munar après Périyar mais est-ce si différent et facile de passer de l'un à l'autre? Quelle que soit l'option Madurai semble sur le chemin (1 nuit max) Mais ensuite, par où passer afin de ne pas voir que des grandes villes genre Trichy avec des temples dont je me lasserai vite? Je finirai par Pondichery (+Gingee?) et Mamallapuram Si c'était à refaire j'aurais atterri à Goa et mon emploi du temps aurait été bien rempli ... Merci de m'avoir lu

My partner and I (we're seniors) are leaving at the end of January for a 40-day trip to India, arriving in Cochin and departing from Delhi. After reading lots of travel journals about India, I’ve put together an itinerary, but I’m worried it might be too (very?) packed... Here’s my plan:

5 or 6 days in the backwaters Munnar: 1 or 2 nights? Ideally next: Madurai, Trichy, Tanjore, Kumbakonam, Chidambaram, Pondi, Mahabalipuram (number of nights in each place to be decided if I keep Tamil Nadu) Flight from Chennai to Varanasi Varanasi: 2 or 3 nights Overnight train to Agra Agra: 1 night Drive to Jaipur with a stop in Fatehpur Sikri Jaipur: 3 nights Bundi: 3 nights Drive to Udaipur with a stop in Chittorgarh? Udaipur: 2 nights Drive to Jodhpur with a stop in Ranakpur Jodhpur: 1 night Jaisalmer: 3 nights Flight to Delhi, then back to France.

This all feels *very* packed. We’re thinking of taking taxis between cities fairly often if public transport is too complicated or time-consuming. Do you think this is doable? Otherwise, the alternative would be to spend more time in Kerala (though we’re not really beach people) and skip Tamil Nadu (which I’d hate to do!!) to focus more on the north instead. We’ve never been to India before, and I’m a little worried about feeling overwhelmed with all the city and temple visits. We’re more used to alternating nature and culture. Looking forward to your valuable advice to finalize our itinerary!

I know there’s a way to request special permission to enter, but I could really use your insights.

I’m thinking of heading to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in early 2026.

Two places I’m curious about: Tiruvannamalai (Tamil Nadu) and Kollegal (Karnataka).

For Tiruvannamalai, I’ve already found quite a bit of info on this forum, but the most recent posts are from 2018. Has anyone been there more recently? My plan is to stay for about a week, book a guesthouse, visit the big Shiva temple, Ramana Maharshi’s ashram, and the caves in the mountain. Any other spots in this town you’d recommend? Would you happen to know a nice guesthouse (preferably around 1500 rupees, doesn’t need to be near the ashram)?

As for Kollegal, I’m not finding much info. And I’m stuck on this permit issue for staying in the town. Can anyone fill me in?

We’re back from an amazing trip to Northern India, which was incredible largely thanks to our driver Harpal, who accompanied us for nearly three weeks. Harpal isn’t just a driver—he’s also a guide. Bonjour, Je compte passer 3 jours à Rameswaram la semaine prochaine. Il va y faire très chaud j'imagine. Je ne trouve pas d'hotel avec piscine bien recommandé dans l'ile. Je ne vois que le Hyat, mais bof... Par contre, il y en a juste avant le pont , la zone a l'air balnéaire. Est ce que quelqu'un qui connait peut me dire si c est jouable de loger là et de faire une simple excursion dans l'ile ? Peut être en louant un scooter ? Ou bien faut il vraiment loger dans l ile ? Je viens de quitter la belle ville de Tiruvannamalai, où j'ai passé presque 1 semaine (et cela en valait largement le coup !) et je viens d'arriver par le bus (175 roupies) à Trichy.

Ma première impression n'est pas fameuse, mais je préfère me tourner vers vos éventuels conseils pour mieux apprécier la ville. J'ai trouvé un logement vers la gare routière, peu cher (750 roupies la nuit) mais vraiment pas terrible (aucune aération, draps et murs sales). Bref, si vous avez des suggestions à faire, je suis toute ouïe.

Bonjour Nous atterrissons à Delhi et allons prendre un vol intérieur pour Jodhpur ( faite de temps ) Je pense qu’ il pourrait être souhaitable de faire une halte ensuite entre Jodhpur et Udaipur auriez vous un conseil à me donner à ce sujet ? Ensuite nous poursuivrons notre route après Udaipur en allant vers Bundi ( nous n’ irons pas à Pushkar ) puis Jaipur puis vers Agra et enfin Delhi .. Dernière question , j’ arrive à 2 heure du matin , j’ aimerais trouver un hôtel proche de l’ aéroport si vous en avez déjà testé un ? Merci beaucoup ! Fin janvier dernier, à Kanyakumari, nous avons assisté à une cérémonie que nous n'avons pas pu définir. Quelques jours plus tard, nous avons encore vu une procession y ressemblant, à Mysore, cette fois. Voilà ce que j'écris sur mon site où je parle de ce voyage :

Au moment où nous y arrivons, toute une file d’hommes et de femmes en sortent portant des pots de fleurs dégoulinants d’eau sur la tête. Au milieu des fleurs, une noix de coco et à leur cou, des colliers de fleurs. Un tambour et un hautbois les accompagne. Le prêtre, tout à coup, lance brutalement une noix de coco à terre (ça surprend!) Et la procession s’ébranle vers le temple. Serait-ce pour célébrer le dieu Murugan au moment de Thaipusan ? Je ne sais pas à quoi peut correspondre cette procession. Nous n’avons pas vu d’autres manifestations liés à cette fête… alors ???

bonjour, je projette de revenir en inde sur une boucle Bengalore hampi sur une petite dizaine de jours périple court donc besoin d'infos pour voir si jouable avec : étape 1 : atterrissage Bengalore (apparemment le plus logique) étape 2 : hampi 3 nuits (surement avec un train de nuit Bengalore-hampi) étape 3 : ? peut être Mysore ? autre étape ? hassan ?

Bonjour à tous les connaisseurs de l’Inde dont j’ai lu avec plaisir vos interventions et carnets sur VF. Je suis en construction de notre prochain voyage en Inde, ce sera le 3 ème. Nous avions terminé le premier à Hampi après avoir voyagé dans le Sud, le 2 ème à Dehli après avoir visité le Gujarat et remonté ensuite de Bhopal à Dehli. Cette fois notre désir de voir les sites de Ajanta et Ellora ce qui nous emmène dans le centre, voici donc notre trajet mais il nous reste des jours en fin de voyage et je suis désireuse d’avoir vos conseils autant pour terminer celui-ci que sur le parcours. Jours à caser! Merci d’avance à ceux qui prendront le temps de me donner quelques coups de pouce...

j'aimerais vous soumettre 2 itinéraires proposés par 2 agences différentes, qui me semblent assez complets pour un voyage que nous ferons avec une voiture avec chauffeur en mars prochain. Je ne veux pas que nous rentrions sur les genoux, mais ce serait dommage de passer à côté de toutes ces merveilles. Par ailleurs, nous sommes assez orientés "nature et animaux" c'est pourquoi ces programmes comportent 3 safaris. Hi, I’m leaving this Saturday for Northern India from 15/02 to 27/02. I’m planning to visit New Delhi, Agra, Chand Baori, Jaipur, Ranthambore, Bundi, Udaipur, and Jodhpur.

What’s the best way to get around? I was thinking of doing everything by train. Maybe taking the bus for some stretches?

As for renting a car with a driver, it seems expensive, so I’ve pretty much ruled that out. Unless someone’s got space for the same dates?

Hi everyone! 🙂 My partner (who’s a teacher—hence the summer holidays) and I are heading to Eastern India for 23 days in July. This is my 5th trip to India, but her first.

We fly into Delhi on July 7th and leave from Delhi on the 23rd (since our flight to Kolkata arrived late at night, and I wanted to show Agra and Varanasi to my partner).

We love getting off the beaten track and meeting people, so we’ll mostly be taking the train.

Here’s what we’re planning:

- **DELHI**: 1 night on the way (short because the plane is supposed to land at 01:55), then we take the train at 13:00 - **GWALIOR**: 3 nights, including a day trip to **AGRA** by train to see the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort (I find Agra too touristy to stay overnight). Otherwise, in Gwalior, the Fort, the temples, the Man Mandir Palace, and the Jai Vilas Palace if we have time. - **ORCHHA**: 2 nights... *maybe skip this to spend more time in VARANASI?* - **VARANASI**: overnight train + 3 nights, the Ghats, temples... maybe a day trip to **SARNATH**. - **KOLKATA**: overnight train + 3 nights. Maybe a countryside excursion to the ashram in Channa. *- Here we’re hesitating over 2 nights: either 2 nights in **SHANTINIKETAN** with a visit to **CHANNA** on the way, or a 2-day excursion to the **SUNDARBAN** nature park. But is it worth it in July during the monsoon?* - **PURI**: overnight train + 4 nights. *We’re planning to do everything from Puri, as it seems nicer than staying in BHUBANESWAR. What do you think?* Visit **KONARK** and **CHILIKA LAKE**. *Is it worth visiting Chilika Lake this season? Another question: can you swim in Puri, or is it too dangerous (waves)?* - Train to **BHUBANESWAR**, then a flight from BHUBANESWAR to **DELHI**, - 2 nights in **DELHI**, visiting Jama Masjid, and *either Humayun’s Tomb, Safdarjung’s Tomb, or Qutb Minar.*

Back to Paris. Total: 23 nights.

We’d love some tips and suggestions for a trip to India we’re planning for February 2026:

We’re a couple in our 70s based in Canada (Montreal), and we’re planning a 3-week trip to India in February 2025.

We’re looking for a moderate pace, with comfortable but authentic and immersive accommodations, and good service.

Ideally:

Northern India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Ranthambore) Southern India (Kerala): Cochin, backwaters (cruise), Munnar

Charming or traditional lodgings (haveli, guesthouse, small hotels), comfortable without being luxurious.

Travel by train where possible, and with a private driver for the rest, plus likely a domestic flight.
