Hello, We’re heading to Thailand for 26 days (excluding flights) next July with our two teens (12 and 15 years old). My husband and I have been there several times before they were born—so that’s 15 years ago—and I’m a bit worried about some of the changes that might have happened since, especially with the rise in tourism... I’d also like to keep a pace that allows us to settle in a bit and enjoy local life beyond just the main sights. Plus, we’re pretty active. For now, our plan looks like this:

Arrival in Bangkok, where we’re thinking of spending several days (minimum 4) Chiang Mai for about a week 2 or 3 islands in the Gulf Return to Bangkok for 2 days before departure.

We’re pretty set on Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but we’re unsure about which islands to visit—I’ve read such mixed things that I’m even wondering if we should consider the coast instead. Organization-wise, I’d love any tips or feedback on whether we need to book in advance at this time of year, which transport options to prioritize (train, bus, or plane), and of course, any suggestions for stops or routes. Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to help us prepare for this amazing trip!

Visite du Temple Blanc, Black house, et surtout, Long Neck village qui m'intéresse particulièrement. J'aimerais savoir si cette agence est fiable. Habituellement, je passe par Expédia pour mes excursions, mais ce n'est pas offert sur leur site. Y a-t-il d'autres activités intéressantes à Chiang Rai en novembre. Merci.

Bonjour je m'interroge sur les étapes le long de la boucke de Mae Hong Son (à 2 roues motorisé). Je ne vais pas partir très tôt le 1er jour (arrivant juste la veille à Chiang Maï), aussi je me demande s'il y a des haltes sympa avant Mae Sariang (je ne compte pas rouler de nuit et je table sur une vitesse moyenne basse). Devrais-je prévoir plus de temps sur le tronçon CM - Mae Sariang ? Ma 2ème étape pourrait être Mae Hong Son (à moins qu'il soit particulièrement recommandé de s'arrêter à Khun Yuam ?) Je pense rester une journée pour MHS et ses environs. Puis le 4ème jour aller vers Soppong : peu de km mais trajet très tourmenté semble t il ? Est ce que je devrais prévoir de visiter Tam Lod ce jour-là ou bien le 5ème ? 5ème jour : ballades autour de Soppong (comment trouver un itinéraire court et sympa pour marcher ?) 6ème jour : il me faut impérativement arriver à CM ce jour-là, le trajet est il réalisable depuis Soppong ou faut-il que je me rapproche de CM le jour 5 ? J'ai déjà eu l'occasion d'aller à Paï, et pas envie d'y revenir - sauf à y faire étape si nécessaire, bien entendu.

C'est pour le mois de janvier : est il facile de trouver des hébergements sur place ou bien faudrait il réserver ? Merci d'avance de vos infos pertinentes !

J'ai passé tout le mois de mars dans le nord - Chiang Rai et les villes plus au nord puis Chiang Mai et la boucle de Mae Hong Son - J'ai beaucoup aimé mais la pollution due aux écobuages est dangereuse. Chiang Mai classée la ville la plus polluée du MONDE quand j'y étais Donc en montagne aucune vue, dommage. Rando déconseillées. En avril ça se calme dès les 1e pluies ? Et il fait très chaud déja, meme en montagne plus frais la nuit mais 39° en journée.

Les vols ne sont pas encore achetés nous attendons selon notre itinéraire. 3 nuits sur Krabi (1 journée Hong Island et 1 journée a Koh Rok et Koh Haa) 5 nuits Koh Lipe 5 nuits Koh Phi Phi Par contre dans quel sens faut il faire cet itinéraire pour avoir le moins de temps de trajet moins de perte de temps possible et par quel moyen de transport pour aller d’une île à une autre. My husband and I are planning a trip to Thailand from January 2 to 10. Departure from Brussels on January 1 – arriving in Bangkok at 6:00 AM on January 2. Departure from Bangkok on January 11 at 2:00 AM, arriving in Brussels at 1:25 PM the same day. For professional and personal reasons, we can’t extend the trip.

I don’t plan on just lounging on a beach in Phuket, so with 9 days on the ground, I know it’s short... But having done this before in Hong Kong and Shanghai, I know it’s doable, refreshing, and enjoyable. We did it with the kids and included a 2- or 3-day stay at Disneyland in each city. Basically, we spent 5-6 days in each city.

Anyway, I’m reaching out because I’ve heard and read so many conflicting opinions that my head is spinning.

Following the saying, "don’t bite off more than you can chew," I’m assuming I should keep it simple. So I’m torn between just Bangkok or Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

If I go with the second option, I’m debating whether to head straight to Chiang Mai on the day we arrive (but given the flight times, we’d lose pretty much the whole day) or spend two days in Bangkok first, then go to Chiang Mai for 3-4 days, and return to Bangkok.

My friend and I are heading to Thailand for three weeks between December 14th and January 4th.

After a week of relaxation in the south by the beach, we plan to explore northern Thailand to see the mountains and discover the country’s history before wrapping up in Bangkok.

I’m torn about which region to explore. For convenience, we’ll arrive in Chiang Mai, spend a few days in the area, then head to Lampang, followed by Sukhothai, and finally Bangkok.

After Chiang Mai (1 or 2 days—I’m worried the period might be too crowded and we won’t enjoy it much), we’ll have 3 days and could go to: Mae Hong Son (with a potential return flight); Chiang Dao and Fang; or Nan province, though that seems a bit far for just 3 days. We could also spend only one day in Chiang Mai and have 4 days instead.

For these 3 (or 4) days between Chiang Mai and Lampang, we’d love to do some beautiful hikes, preferably on our own, and see stunning landscapes, nature, and small villages.

Among my options, which would you recommend? Or where can we find great hikes that we can do independently and that aren’t overrun by mass tourism? I’ll admit, I’m struggling to find info—there are lots of small national parks, but details are scarce, and even AllTrails doesn’t have much for some of them...

Just to clarify, we’re considering hiring a car with a driver if needed.

Tout est dans le titre :) Je pars seul du 3 au 17 mars 2020 en Thaïlande, et ayant déjà fait un peu le sud (Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Koh Tao, Koh Pha Ngan, Patong, Phi-phi) j'aimerais découvrir le nord, que j'espère plus "nature" et sauvage, authentique... et bien entendu moins saturé.

Pour informations je suis plutôt amateur de voyage en sac à dos, simple et sans chichi, ayant déjà fait en mode assez roots (avec ma copine cette fois) le Vietnam, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pérou, et Thaïlande du sud donc .. :)

Auriez-vous des conseils pour visiter le nord ? des bons plans, activités ou lieux à absolument voir ? Aussi : > possible de se baigner dans le coin ? (sans chercher les plages paradisiaques du sud) > des trek sympa ? sur plusieurs jours ? > des parc nationaux ou autres sanctuaires animaliers ?

Avez-vous également une idée du budget environ ? (le billet à ce jour est à 470€ environ) je pense les acheter d'ici 2 jours. Je pense prévoir environ 1500€ tout compris, mais à voir selon vos avis.

Hi there, I’m arriving in Thailand with my family on February 9th (2026). We land at BKK that day and then take a direct flight to Krabi.

My first little question is this: We’ve booked a hotel 4 km from the airport (B2Krabi). Should I reserve a taxi through an app (which one?) to get there, or do you think I’ll easily find a taxi/tuk-tuk on the spot, considering we’ll arrive around 8/9 PM? Any idea of the expected price (for three people) for this short trip?

For the Krabi/Ko Phi Phi route, I’m not entirely sure where the departure point is—I’ve attached a photo of the map. Which company is the most affordable? Do you think I can buy my ticket the day before departure and still be sure to get seats? Is it better to book in advance (and if so, on which site)? Same question for the return trip from Ko Phi Phi to Krabi!

We have the opportunity to get away for a little two-week trip at the very beginning of January, just the two of us, without our kids. Because of the kids, we haven’t traveled much in Asia, so we’d love to take advantage of their absence to explore Thailand. Even though I’m used to planning our trips, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed this time.

We’d like to visit Bangkok and head south by renting a car (we have an international driver’s license, and my husband has driven on the left before). I’ve managed to sketch out a rough itinerary that might work for us, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

To set the scene: we haven’t booked anything yet, we don’t like spending hours on the beach (though a little time at the end of the day is fine), we love walking and sightseeing, and what we enjoy most is being independent (so if we can avoid group tours, that’s ideal).

After that intro, here’s the rough outline of our itinerary: Day 0: Paris-Bangkok flight Days 1, 2, and 3: Bangkok (Wat Pho, Grand Palace, Wat Arun, markets, boat ride through the khlongs, Jim Thompson House) Day 4: Ayutthaya Day 5: Pick up a rental car and head to Sam Roi Yot Day 6: Sam Roi Yot and Prachuap Khiri Khan Day 7: Drive south – overnight near Surat Thani Day 8: Uthayan Tham Khao Na Nai, then drive to Ao Nang (staying near Tubkaek) Days 9 and 10: Boat trips (Railay, Ko Hong, etc.) Day 11: Drive to Phang Nga with a few stops along the way Day 12: Boat tour (mangroves and Ko Tapu) Day 13: Drive to Phuket Airport and return flight

A few questions and doubts: - I’d considered Cheow Lan Lake but read some not-so-great reviews (crowds, just 3 viewpoints, and the rest was meh). What do you think? - Can we start from Ao Thalane Pier for trips to Ko Hong and Ko Tapu? - I’m not thrilled about driving through Bangkok, but I’m not sure where to rent a car west of the city (since we won’t return it to the same place, I assume it’s best to target rental companies at airports).

We’ve been to Thailand before, 10 years ago, and this time, we’d just like to focus on 5 days in Chiang Mai and 10–12 days in the Krabi area. I’ll admit, I’m really struggling to pick an island near Krabi. We hated Phi Phi: dirty, noisy, and the food was gross… such a letdown! Which island would you recommend for snorkeling, nature walks, and beautiful beaches? Maybe we could also make a stop between Chiang Mai and Krabi—perhaps Sukhothai? Hi there, During our Thailand trip, we're planning to arrive in Bangkok and then head up to Chiang Mai. So far, so good. But after that, we'd like to go to the islands—either Krabi or Koh Samui. However, the flights listed on 12go.asia seem complicated, with a layover of about 1 hour in Bangkok where we'd have to collect our luggage and check in for the second flight. That feels way too tight.

The trip I took to Cambodia in January 2025 did me a world of good. I’m now considering Thailand, a destination we never included in our plans because even 15 years ago, people said it was too touristy. Still, I’m thinking about the itinerary below, but I don’t feel up to arranging buses, trains, or guides on my own while I’m there. I’m looking for one or more drivers and have been in touch with an agency, but their offers are just copy-paste group tours that I don’t want. So, if you have any contacts, experiences, or advice, I’d be so grateful if you’d share them with me. Here’s my rough plan: Arrival in Bangkok Ayutthaya (2 nights) Kanchanaburi (2 or 3 nights) Sangkhlaburi/Sai Yok (3 nights) Sukhothai (2 nights) Lampang (I’ve planned 3 nights, but that might be a bit much—it depends on what time I arrive in the city) Chiang Mai Chiang Dao Pai Chiang Rai I was thinking about the Mae Hong Son loop—thoughts? What do you think about staying overnight at the Golden Triangle? When I look online, of course, I can find agencies that organize tours to national parks, etc. I’m retired but in great physical shape. I’d rather go hiking than sit in hot springs with crowds of tourists who’ve all arranged meet-ups. I don’t want to spend a day at an elephant camp, and I don’t want to visit Karen villages. Are the landscapes green like we’d expect at this time of year, or are they dry with gray and brown mountains due to the drought? Hi everyone, we’ll be in Thailand from August 2nd to 21st, arriving in Bangkok on the 2nd for a visit. From the 5th to the 8th: Angkor temples. Then, starting on the 9th, we’re planning to head to Chiang Mai, and by the 14th or 15th, we’d like to be on an island until the 19th, when we return to Bangkok. Five days in Chiang Mai seems a bit long to us. What do you recommend between the 9th and 15th, and which island? We’re not big fans of sunbathing—we’d love to snorkel and explore the island. Ideally, I’d have liked to find a house to rent, but every time, I end up with places far from the beach, whereas we’d really like to be able to walk to the beach for strolls. Hi everyone, I’m a die-hard fan of India, but it’s time I discovered Thailand too to broaden my Asian horizons. I’m heading there on January 19, 2025, for a 46-day trip (no visa needed as I’m French). I’ve pored over a few guidebooks and travel blogs. Based on what caught my interest, I’ve put together a rough itinerary and list of sights. But since I know absolutely nothing about Thailand, I’m kind of flying blind here. Since I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I’ve opted for a few bases where I’ll stay several days in the same place. That way, I won’t have to change locations and hotels every day or so, packing and unpacking my suitcase constantly. Instead, I plan to explore the surrounding area each day, within a maximum radius of 50 to 70 km. So, first question: Is that kind of round-trip distance manageable in a day in Thailand? In India, renting a car for a day—with a driver—currently costs around 35 to 40 € per day. Knowing that 1,300 to 1,500 THB would be my absolute max, and even then, only if I don’t rent a car every single day. Which brings me to my second question: Am I being unrealistic? Otherwise—third question—once I’m settled in the city I’ve chosen as my base, can I get around within that 50–70 km radius using public transport? I’ve already booked all my hotels—with free cancellation—on booking.com at an average price of 950/1,000 THB per night. Does that put me in a good range for value for money? Or am I dreaming?

Here’s my plan:

BANGKOK (13 days, 14 nights): 1 week for exploring Bangkok – Kanchanaburi/Erawan National Park? – Ayutthaya/Lopburi? – Muang Boran – Samut – Songkram/Amphawa

Nous avons donc décidé de faire le tour de Thailande pendant 3 semaines ou 4 semaines au départ de Krabi où nous avons notre résidence secondaire. J'ai préparé un trajet, mais j aimerais avoir vos conseils Tout d abord conseillez vous de réserver les hotels ou BB au jour le jour - Nous avons envie de visiter à notre rythme, et rester sur place plus de nuits que prévues si le coeur nous en dit. Pouvez vous aussi, si vous êtes golfeur me dire où nous devrions nous poser plus longtemps afin de faire un petit parcours de golf. Voici le trajet auquel j ai pensé KRABI - Bang Saphan (2 nuits) - Sam Roi Yot - (2 nuits) - Kanchanaburi (2 nuits) - Chainat (1 nuit) - Mae Sot (2 nuits) - Lampang (1nuit) - Chiang Mai (3 nuits) - Chiang Rai (2 nuits) - Nan - (1 nuit) - Phitsalunok (3 nuits) - Loei (2 nuits) - Petchabun ou Chian Khan ou Sri Chiangmai (je suis un peu perdue par là ...... (2 nuits) - Hua Hin (qqs nuits) avant de reprendre la route vers Krabi.

Est ce envisageable ? Le nombre de nuits est il correct par rapport aux visites sur place

Je passe par la Thailande tous les 6 mois et une fois de plus la bath n'en fini pas de monter, j'ai changé hier 31.78 pour 1 euro, il y a 6 mois j'avais 38 baths et un an 42 baths. Ça pénalise le tourisme, en effet la chute du nombre de touriste continu et ça se voit dans les hôtels, dans celui ou je vais habituellement à BKK, Hôtel 4 étoiles, peu de touristes occidentaux mais surtout des Thaïs, j'ai demandé au réceptionniste ce qui se passe et il m'a dit qu'ils subissaient une forte baisse de la demande Europe et US, du coup ils font des prix pour les locaux afin de remplir l’hôtel. La compagnie aérienne nationale est obligé de réduire la voilure, elle supprime son A380 au départ de Paris faute à la baisse de la demande et met un 777 à la place. La Thaï serait aussi au bord du dépôt de bilan et fera des propositions mi novembre comme une baisse drastique des salaires surtout des cadres de la compagnie, elle emploie actuellement 20000 salariés. Les européens se tournent vers des pays moins chères comme le Vietnam, le Cambodge et le Laos... La Birmanie est aussi en baisse après des années d'augmentation du nombre de touristes.

Hi there, I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

After a successful first trip in 2025, with the help of forum members, we’d love to return to this amazing cultural melting pot in 2026 for three weeks (2 adults, 2 kids aged 13 and 16).

We’d like to explore new places in the Northeast: fly into Khon Kaen and explore the region—Loei, Nong Khai, perhaps? A detour to the center to visit Sukhothai would be a great addition.

I’ll admit, planning this itinerary is a bit trickier for me since I’m less familiar with these areas and what they have to offer. The distances also seem longer than our previous transfers (BKK-Kanchanaburi-Kaeng Krachan-Sam Roi Yot...).

Do you have any suggestions or hidden gems to explore in the Northeast and Central regions that keep travel time between stops reasonable (3-4 hours)?

Our flights are booked, and we’ll arrive in Thailand at the beginning of January.

Originally, we were supposed to spend 14 days there. But after booking the flights and seeing the prices, we’ll now be there for 20 days instead.

Our initial plan was: 2 days in Bangkok 1 day in Ayutthaya 4 days in Chiang Mai 6 days around Krabi

So we have 7 more days to fill. What do you recommend?

An extra day in Bangkok? Adding more days in the north? If so, where? Exploring another region, like Kanchanaburi or Cheow Lan Lake? Traveling north in stages instead of taking the overnight train?

A few extra details about us: For us, vacation isn’t about relaxation—we love walking, exploring, and packed days don’t bother us. Hiking for hours and doing active things is what makes us happy. That said, we also enjoy visiting villages and towns if they’re worth the detour. In Thailand, we’d like to visit temples too. We’re early risers, so our days tend to be long. 🙂 In short, we like to keep things moving during our trips. 😉

Unfortunately, seeing terraced rice fields isn’t possible in January. I read there are rice fields around Sukhothai. Are they green in January?

In the north, do you recommend Doi Inthanon, Huai Nam Dang, or Doi Chiang Dao National Parks? Which one is the most beautiful and best for January?

Hi there, I’m finally planning to spend 9 days/9 nights in Chiang Rai. What’s the best area to stay in? Do you know any interesting spots within a 50–60 km radius?
