Hello, I’m taking advantage of the forum reopening to ask this question:

For her 70th birthday, my mom will receive—as a gift—a trip to South Africa at the end of May 2025. We’ll arrive and depart (13 nights later) from JNB on Air France AF990/AF995. We’ll obviously rent a car for certain parts of the trip. I’ve been to the Cape Town area and as far as Agulhas twice, but she’s never been to South Africa before. She might enjoy a day or two of safari, but it’s not a priority for her. I’m well aware that trying to pack in too much is risky, which is why I’m looking for your advice on itineraries, safety, and health (status of the Marburg virus). So far, which combinations of these visits (in no particular order) would be doable and most enjoyable for her at a reasonable pace:

1-day excursion to Pilanesberg Park (+ Hartbeespoort on the way back if possible), self-drive or with a tour guide? 2 nights around the Panorama Route self-driving Garden Route from/to George/PLZ for 5 nights (what are the must-sees for a first-timer with so little time?) Wine region for 2 nights (is it worth doing both the Stellenbosch bus tour and the Franschhoek Wine Tram the next day, or vice versa)—she loves good wine! Cape Town for 2 nights (is it worth stopping at the Cape of Good Hope if—only if—you’ve maybe already been to Agulhas?).

This would give a final itinerary like this:

Day 1: Morning arrival in JNB—rest day/to be defined Day 2: Guided game drive excursion to Pilanesberg Park Day 3: Flight JNB–Port Elizabeth, pick up rental car, drive to Tsitsikamma Day 4–6: Garden Route: activities to be defined Day 7: Transfer to Franschhoek: Wine Tram in the afternoon Day 8: Taxi to Stellenbosch for the Vine Hopper bus tour Day 9–11: Transfer to Cape Town: activities to be defined Day 12: Flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit or Nelspruit Day 13: Visit the Panorama Route Day 14: Flight from Hoedspruit or Nelspruit to JNB, then evening flight back to France

Given the time spent on the Garden Route, what are the must-sees? Same question for the Panorama Route? In general, she prefers beautiful walks with incredible landscapes/views and cultural visits over big cats, but it would be a shame not to see some local wildlife like meerkats, whales (I doubt it in May), or penguins during her stay! After going through a good chunk of the forum and travel journals about South Africa, I think my itinerary is ready...

I’ve planned 2 days with long drives to minimize time spent outside the parks. These are Sunday the 18th: Johannesburg Airport to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve, and Friday the 23rd: St. Lucia to Nelspruit (staying in South Africa) or as close as possible to visit the Canyon the next day.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary, especially these 2 days—are they doable or not? Should I book in advance, or will there be places to sleep along the way if we don’t make it to our planned destination? What’s the crowd level in South Africa in October?

As for Kruger, I’ve chosen campsites with camping facilities, prioritizing the "satellite" camps, at least in the northern part!! I’ve planned to change camps almost every day to combine travel and wildlife spotting, but is this the right choice?

The itinerary:

Sunday 18th Arrival at 8:50 AM in Johannesburg Drive to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve 530 km, 7h20 1 night (18th–19th) at the northern gate

Monday 19th Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve 1h30, 50 km 2nd night (19th–20th) southeast of the reserve

Hi, I’m starting to plan a great trip for the last three weeks of January 2027 (my first time in South Africa). After spending a few hours (!) browsing this forum, here’s a rough first draft of my itinerary:

D0 Arrival at JNB D1, D2 Blyde River Canyon D3, D4, D5, D6, D7: Kruger D8, D9, D10: St Lucia and surrounding area D11, D12, D13, D14: Drakensberg + Lesotho

D15 A very long driving day to the south (hope the AC doesn’t break down!)

D16, D17, D18, D19 southwest coast (so far I’ve noted Oudtshoorn, Robberg Nature Reserve, Wilderness NP, De Hoop Reserve, and a bit of the wine route) D20, D21 Cape Town (peninsula and a bit of the city) + domestic flight and return flight (departure from JNB at 11 PM)

A few questions before refining this: - Do you see any major issues with this itinerary?

- We don’t have a choice on dates, and personally, I prefer green landscapes to desert ones anyway, but do you really see far fewer animals in January than in the dry season? Five days in Kruger should give us enough time to spot plenty of different animals despite the tall grass, right? As for the heat, we’re from Réunion, so we’re relatively used to it, even though I know it’s not the same type of heat.

- Can I trust the distances and driving times given by Google Maps?

- Picking up the vehicle in Johannesburg and dropping it off in Cape Town: how much might that cost us? I’m thinking it probably won’t be worse (in terms of time or money, since there are five of us—2 adults + 3 kids) than going back to Joburg after Lesotho, taking a flight to Cape Town, and renting another vehicle... but maybe I’m wrong.

- Finally, wouldn’t it be better to focus on just one of the two regions (either the northeast or Cape Town and the south coast)? If it were up to me, I’d stick to the first part and extend a few stops... but not everyone agrees! And we’re thinking that since it’ll be really hot, a second part of the trip that’s a bit """cooler""" would be welcome.

nous préparons notre voyage en ADS et n’étant pas habitué a ce continent je viens solliciter vos avis et conseils.

Notre objectif est prioritairement de profiter du parc Kruger et des golfs. Nous pensons partir de Bordeaux le 09 sept 2020 pour atterrir a JNB le 10. nous repartirons le 28 sept de JNB retour bordeaux

1- le voyage : je trouve des vols BOR - JNB pour 820 € pour deux personnes en A/R avec 1 valise soute et le transport de nos clubs de golf gratuit. durée du vol environ 14h avec escale a CDG. pensez vous qu en attendant un peu nous pourrons trouver de meilleurs offres ?

2 - notre périple location de voiture sur l ensemble du séjour, si vous avez une adresse pour louer en toute sécurité a prix discount je suis preneur

a- arrivée a Jobur le 10/09. Nous pensons rester 4 jours afin de découvrir la ville + Pretoria + soweto. nous recherchons un airbnb un peu classe (piscine, parking etc) proche du centre de JNB. avez vous un quartier a me préconiser ? ou encore mieux une adresse ? je pense que nous utiliserons les bus rouge (type anglais) pour faire un tour de la ville puis une visite avec un guide français pour soweto (si vous avez un bon plan je suis preneur).

b- kruger sur 8 jours en réservant sur le site national du kruger 4 camps. Nous entrerons par Punda Maria, Olifan, Satara, Lower sabie. 2 jours sur chaque camps qui sont dotés d une piscine, restau et superette. l idée et d aller du nord au sud en ayant du temps et de profiter sans être pressé. nous prendrions les bungalows 2 personnes. si vous connaissez pouvez vous me dire si c est propre, agréable etc.

c- région de leopard creek, Nelspruit 5 nuits ou nous cumulerons les paysages+ golf. Je recherche un airbnb de qualité permettant de passer ces 6 jours de façon confortable.

d- retour pour 2 nuits a JNB pour du golf exclusivement

notre budget a cette heure pour 6 golfs 2 personnes est de 4000 € hors repas. je recherche des logements sur JNB et Leopard Creeks entre 50 et 100 € par nuit pour 2 personnes.

enfin si vous avez des idées de visites je suis preneur. Nous avons fait le choix de ne pas aller au cap afin de limiter les transports aériens, temps perdu aux aéroports et profiter du golf. Le cap et la région sud de l ADS fera l objet d autres vacances.

Je vais découvrir l'AFS fin septembre. Est- ce prudent de faire le trajet de l'aéroport de Nelspruit à Malelane à partir de 17h ou vaut il mieux que je réserve une chambre à Nelspruit?

Hi there, We’ll have about 7 hours (11:30 AM to 6 PM) to do the Panorama Route with an overnight stay near Graskop. My question is: - Is that a bit tight, and would it be better to head back up toward Hoedspruit to do the route in the opposite direction before our flight, maybe revisiting some spots we might’ve rushed through? - Or is it smarter to take a route we haven’t done yet, like heading down to Nelspruit via Hazyview? But here’s the thing—are there things to see or new landscapes on that road, considering we’ll have already done Kruger, Blyde (Ballule), and Manyeleti? Des membres du forum m'ont conseillé de m'adresser à vous pour préparer mon voyage de 3 semaines Afrique du Sud - Mozambique (nous serons un couple avec des ados de 13 et 15 ans). On compte louer un 4X4 en AS.

Nous partirions de Johan. vers Graskop pour la nuit Traversée du canyon Blyde (la journée) Arriver dans le Kruger (Phalaborwa) Y passer 3 jours (dans rest camp question budget (lesquels ??)) Sortir par Giryondo et aller à Massingir pour la nuit Faire la route jusque Chidenguele et y dormir Faire la route jusque Tofo pour y rester plusieurs jours Aller ensuite à Vilanculos.

Etant donné que nous louons la voiture en AS, on ferait la route en sens inverse en s'arrêtant à Morrungulo, Bilene, Nelspruit.

Qu'en pensez vous ?

On aurait voulu relier le Mozambique par la porte tout au nord (Pafuri) mais la route jusque Vilanculos est longue et je ne vois pas de possibilités d'hébergement sur la route...

Hi there, First question: We're leaving Kruger Park from Olifants camp to head to BRC. I know the drive is long (about 4 hours, especially since I think the part through the park will be slow due to animals). We're exiting the park via Phalaborwa Gate, but I can't find a map, so it's hard to tell if we'll arrive at the top of the Canyon or via Graskop to then drive up the Panorama Route.

Second question: I booked 1 night at Forever Resort, but if we arrive from the top and then drive down the Panorama Route, I'm not sure that's the best choice.

Third question: Since we're leaving Kruger early in the morning, I think we can plan to explore the area in the afternoon. We'll sleep there, and then we need to be at our lodge in the Balule private reserve by late morning (Imagine Africa) to catch the afternoon safari. I'm worried it might be too short if we want to do a boat trip on the dam! What do you think? Should I add another night? It's still possible since I haven't planned the rest yet, and we have 7 nights left in Cape Town, including Hermanus! Do you think I should cut short the Cape Town stay? If so, I could break the BRC trip into two parts—one night after leaving Kruger before the private safari, and then come back this way (since it's not too far, I think) after the two nights on safari before heading to Cape Town. But how can I organize the visits logically?

I can already hear Michel telling me I'm overcomplicating things!! 😉

Quel est selon vous le meilleur plan entrer par la porte le plus au sud Malelane et remonter à l’intérieur du parc ( pas trop d-idée du temps nécessaire mais surement long?) ou prendre la route ( et laquelle)pour rentrer par la porte PAUL KRUGER? Avec ma femme et ma fille de 6 ans nous avons booké 11 jours (du 3 au 14 avril) en AFS. Nous atterrissons au Cap puis retour au départ de Johannesburg.

Voici le trajet que nous avons imaginé, qu'en pensez-vous ? - Vendredi 3: Arrivée au Cap en soirée. 1 nuit au Cap. - Samedi 4 au lundi 6: Le Cap et environ (notamment Cap Bonne Espérance). 3 nuits. - Mardi 7: départ très tôt le matin en avion pour Jobourgh. On loue une voiture à l'aéroport et nous souhaitions aller directement dans un hôtel à proximité du Parc Pilanesberg. 1 nuit. - Mercredi 8: Safari dans le Parc Pilanesberg. 1 nuit. - Jeudi 9: Safari dans le Parc Pilanesberg et/ou Sun City pour ma fille. - Vendredi 10: départ très tôt le matin pour le Parc Madikwe. 1 nuit. - Samedi 11: Safari. 1 nuit - Dimanche 12: Safari. 1 nuit. - Lundi 13: départ très tôt pour Johanesburg, on rend la voiture et nous avons notre vol retour pour Paris à 18h00. Pensez-vous qu'il soit possible de rallier Jobourgh de Madikwe en 5/6h ? Jouable ? Un autre moyen pour rallier le jour même l'aéroport plus rapidement (départ de Gaborone ? ).

Avez-vous d'autres idées ? Nous voulons éviter les parcs du NE, à cause du paludisme... Des erreurs à ne pas faire ? Des tips ?

Is the Mozambique route via Maputo a good option? What are the formalities for crossing into Mozambique? Is the Kosy Bay area worth a detour? We’ll be entering Kruger from the south for 4 days. Any recommendations for routes/campsites? Lower Sabie, Satara? Do we really need to book accommodations in Kruger in February? And what about safaris? Thanks for your input! Franz

Hi everyone, has anyone been to Shingwezi Camp in the northern part of Kruger Park? I read on the SanParks website that the drive from Phalaborwa Gate to Shingwezi Camp takes 12 hours🤯. Can anyone confirm this? When I check Google Maps, it shows a 5-hour trip?? Thanks for your replies 😅

Je me demande s'il faut vraiment réserver un logement à l'avance à cette période ? En effet, j'ai vraiment du mal à prévoir un trajet et visualiser où dormir le soir. Hi everyone, I’m trying to finalize my 2-week itinerary for mid-February. We’ll have traveled from Port Elizabeth to George, stopping by Plettenberg and Knysna, and we’ll be around De Rust at the end. We want to take the return route to Port Elizabeth with an overnight stop since we don’t like driving for long hours. We’re torn between going through the Karoo with a stop in Steytlerville or taking the R62 via Joubertina and Kareedouw. Which option would you recommend, please? Hi, Do you know how much time is needed to visit Blyde (Panorama Route)? I’ll be leaving Imagine Africa (Balule Reserve) at 10:30 AM after the morning game drive to take the Panorama Route with stops at the main sites (we can skip the waterfalls if they don’t seem worth it!). Is it doable to leave Balule and arrive in Graskop for the night, or should I add an extra night somewhere? I know it *can* be done in a day, but the drive there will eat into the time, and I don’t want to rush either!

Since I’ll have 4 nights in Cape Town and 4 for the Whale Coast and De Hoop Nature Reserve, I can add a night if needed... how should I split it up? Thanks for your great tips! Dan

Quick question: we're leaving from Midrand, taking the N14 to Vryburg, then heading toward the McCarthy's Border crossing. After that, we want to reach the Mabuasehube Gate. The question is, how long does it take to get from Midrand to the Mabuasehube Gate? We plan to make one stop near Vryburg to fill up on drinks and snacks. Nous avons prévu de faire un trek à cheval de 6 jours au lesotho au départ de Maseru. 1) Quels sont les moyen de s'y rendre depuis joburg (autre qu'avion)? J'aimerais pouvoir poursuivre la suite du voyage par le sani pass puis dragensberg, swatziland et finir par le kruger. 2) Est ce faisable en si peu de jour? vaut-il mieux faire l'itinéraire dans l'autre sens? 3) nous n'aurions pas de voiture au lesotho, savez comment peut-on faire le trajet de maseru à durban? sachant que nous voudrions louer une voiture pour la fin du voyage.

Nous sommes un jeune couple et souhaitons visiter l'Afrique du sud et le Mozambique au mois de juillet 2020. Nous avons 30 jours à notre disposition. Nous pensons répartir nos jours comme ceci:

Que pensez-vous de cet itinéraire? Cela fait un peu près 3700km en 27 jours (sans compter les trajets dans le Kruger). Pensez-vous que c'es trop ? Nous hésitons à faire Durban, cela peut réduire un peu notre trajet. Quelle itinéraire pour passer du Kruger au Mozambique nous conseillez-vous ? Peut-on traverser la frontière avec un 4x4 loué en AFS ?

Après de nombreux voyages aux USA, nous nous sommes décidés pour un road-trip de quatre semaines à la découverte de l'Afrique du Sud en septembre-octobre 2020. Grâce aux conseils apportés sur ce forum et aux superbes carnets de voyage que je dévore depuis décembre ( Attila, Marati, Ticapi, Rouquine38, Montagnard74, Michel85200...) , j'ai réussi à définir nos envies et priorités 😎

Les vols sont réservés (532€ bagage soute inclus le multidestination NTE-JNB / CPT-NTE avec KLM)

J'ai déjà commencé les réservations des hébergements mais tous les logements sont annulables hormis au Kruger, pas mal de logements étaient déjà réservés donc je n'ai pas trainé pour réserver ! 😮

J'hésite entre deux itinéraires, un trajet Johannesburg-Durban puis boucle depuis le Cap ou une boucle Johannesburg-Johannesburg puis la même boucle depuis le Cap:

Pensez-vous que c'est jouable en partant tôt de faire ce trajet et de prendre un vol à 14h35 ou 15h25 à Tambo, ça nous permettrait d'arriver de jour au Cap pour rejoindre Stellenbosch ?). Le sunset est à 18h47 et la nuit noire à 19h12 ce jour là donc le vol qui arrive à 18h30 est déjà trop tardif...

L'avantage de ce 2e itinéraire est d'éviter les frais d'abandon de la voiture, et d'avoir plus de choix de vols pour rejoindre Le Cap, mais il y a 1h de route en plus. Quelle route est la meilleure, la plus roulante, celle du Drakensberg à Durban ou celle du Drakensberg à Joburg ?

Après avoir écumé moult pages de ce forum je voulais avoir votre ressenti sur mon itinéraire de voyage en Afrique du Sud. Nous avons décidé de partir en dernière minute et nous atterrirons jeudi matin prochain à Johannesburg et re-décollerons du Cap le samedi 14 au soir soit 17 jours sur place.

Nous avons envie de nature et de montagnes. N'étant pas forcément particulièrement attirés par les animaux, nous avions au départ décidé d'opter pour le Maputaland plutôt que Kruger et Blyde mais finalement nous avons décidé qu'il serait quand même dommage d'aller en Afrique du Sud sans faire une virée au Kruger ... (et puis Blyde a l'air incroyable aussi !).

Voici l'itinéraire prévu : voyez-vous des choses à modifier ?

J1 : Arrivée à Johannesburg à 11h30 - visite du Musée de l'apartheid l'après-midi

J2 : Décollage pour Skukuza - location de voiture - nuit au Kruger (où ? Lower Sabie déjà complet, Berg en Dal ?)

J3 : Kruger : Nuit 2 (quel deuxième camp ? Je voulais aller à Olifants mais c'est 10h de trajet du coup impossible sur une journée du coup je ne sais pas pour quel point de chute opter)

J4 - J5 : Blyde : 2 nuits à Her en Dal, marche dans le canyon

J6 : Trajet en voiture de Blyde au Royal Natal (cela se fait bien en une journée ?)

J7 - J10 : Drakensberg : 2 nuits au Royal Natal puis vers le Sud (Sani Pass par exemple)

J11 - J17 : Virée au Cap et proximité (Cape Town, Table Mountain, Cap de Bonne espérances, 2J de vignobles, peut-être Overberg ...)

J18 : Retour tristesse et grisaille

J'ai encore quelques doutes sur la première partie du périple sur lesquels je serais ravi d'avoir des lumières :

* pour le Kruger, où passeriez-vous vos deux nuits en atterrissant à Skukuza ? (sachant que Lower Sabie pas dispo sur la période) Au même endroits ? Deux endroits différents ?

* avez-vous des conseils sur la meilleure manière de relier Blyde au Drakensberg ? De ce que j'ai compris le trajet est long env. 7h de voiture voire plus, particulièrement ennuyeux avec peu de points d'arrêt entre les deux destinations et il n'y a pas non plus de vol direct ...

* Auriez-vous des recommandations pour les points du chute et hébergements pour nos 5 jours au Drakensberg ?

Troisième road trip en 4X4 en préparation pour Août, après 2007 et 2012 . Arrivée en milieu de journée a JNB le 29/07, pour plus de confort nuit sur place. Je pense attaquer directement par le KTP pour 4/5 jours que l'on adore, avec si possible deux nuits en satellite camp, souvenir d'une expérience inoubliable à Garaghab. C'est là que ça se complique, on aimerais bien aller faire un tour en Namibie ou au Botswana avant de finir par le Kruger pour encore 5/6 jours. Vol retour le 13/08 au départ de JNB.

Hi there, In two months, I’m heading off for 4 weeks with three backpacker friends to South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. We’ve got our round-trip flight tickets from France to Johannesburg and plan to drive from Johannesburg to Cape Town and back to Johannesburg in an SUV or 4x4. For other city trips, we’ll use local transport or Uber. That’s the plan for our transportation.

For the car rental, I’d like to know which company to book with. Can anyone give me some tips on renting a vehicle and crossing into Lesotho and Eswatini?

Next, I’ve put together a rough itinerary that seems good to me, but could you share your experiences and maybe point out any mistakes I’ve made?

Hi everyone, For those who’ve been following me... progress is being made! Anyway, just to recap for the others: I’m leaving Manyeleti (a private reserve) to do a self-drive safari in the main Kruger Park for 2 nights before heading to Blyde River Canyon (sharing all this so you can picture the route). So Satara seemed like a good base for the safari, except that you can only book accommodation in this non-private park through Sandparks to find a camp. Since Satara is fully booked, the only ones with availability for my dates are: Tamboti, Olifants, and Satara—wait, no, Satara’s full—so Letaba, sorry! Any thoughts on these camps? Because I can enter via Orpen and drive north (safari-style), which would let us explore, but: 1/ Too many km if we pick the farthest one, Letaba? If I leave Manyeleti (Honeyguide Mantobeni) after the morning safari, what time do I need to be at the camp by?
