AirAsia baggage weight: planned scam?

On my flight from Chiang Rai (CEI) to Krabi (KBV) via Bangkok (DMK), I took two connecting flights: the first with Nok Air and the second with AirAsia, with a layover of about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Just enough time to grab my backpack and check in—basically a quick sprint through the airport... Everything went smoothly, but at DMK, the AirAsia flight was 30 minutes late... Once comfortably seated in the departure lounge, I checked my passport and boarding passes and realized Nok Air had weighed my checked backpack at 8 kg, but when it arrived at DMK, AirAsia had weighed it at 10 kg! So, my bag supposedly gained 2 kg after just 1 hour and 10 minutes of flight...??? 😮

Nok Air offers 15 kg of baggage for free, while AirAsia offers nothing—you have to buy 15 kg (300 baht) when purchasing your ticket or pay 900 baht at the counter for the same allowance. Excess baggage costs 400 baht per additional kg.

Low-cost airlines worldwide (and even major carriers) are eyeing baggage weight—having paid for it with Corsair before—but these "extra" 2 kg that magically appeared are still worth pointing out. My bag weighed 7.8 kg when leaving YUL (Air China), and it’s a 35L backpack that also weighed 8 kg on the way back.

So, be careful...

By the way... have you ever been through DMG airport? 😇

Yes, I go there when I fly to Ubon. Always super quick with the formalities.

Yes, I go there when I fly to Ubon. The formalities are always really quick.

You sure??

Don’t you sometimes go through DMK instead? 😇

(which is why I disagreed with the thread starter in my first post 😛)

Even if he’d said GVA, I wouldn’t have noticed—I totally understood what he meant. I’m from Valais, but I’m not drunk at 9 AM.

Hi there,

Right off the bat, I can see three possible explanations.

Nok Air’s scale was miscalibrated, not AirAsia’s. When you placed your bag on the CEI scale, you set it off-center on the platform. The CEI scale is getting old, so friction is preventing the platform from adjusting properly.

Hi there, With AirAsia, you say you have to buy the 15 kg baggage allowance, but with Nok Air, it's free. For the routes I'm interested in, Nok Air is more expensive—it's on top of the baggage costs (boats), I imagine.

About the difference between 8 and 10 kg: as another user pointed out, I think for you (with 15 kg paid), it doesn’t matter. However, I’d advise anyone who’s unsure to go for the 20 kg option—it’s not much more expensive.

You mentioned being careful about the price of extra kilos for baggage not checked online. You’re right.

No extra charges for luggage on boats from what I’ve seen, whether on a tailboat or speedboat and ferry. And for the kilos, a 200g difference would’ve been ridiculous, but 2kg is still something—though honestly, the well-known vulture scavengers on the forum make a whole feast out of it because they’ve got nothing better to do with their sad little lives. I know, it’s pathetic, but we’ve gotta let them live. It gives them a reason to exist. It’s really sad, but can you imagine living near them? Luckily, they’re just a few scattered letters on a screen...

Just to clarify. Nok Air works with Lomprayah ferry company (the boat trip is a tiny bit more expensive than its competitors). It’s my favorite because it’s faster and more comfortable. I might be wrong, but I think the difference comes down to "free" baggage (not actually free, just included) versus the boat price (if applicable, like with Raja and AirAsia), which makes Nok Air a little pricier. Everyone can choose based on their schedule and budget. 🙂

Hello, An 8 kg backpack (35 L) is a carry-on, right? (I have the equivalent.) AirAsia has never weighed any of my carry-on bags (free up to 7 kg). So why check it? Prohibited items inside?

What a scam this airline is! Sure enough, at check-in they told me I hadn’t paid for my checked baggage. But I have the email and PDF clearly stating I’m entitled to a 24 kg bag and that it’s paid for. They refused to check in my luggage—just left it there. I had no choice but to pay again. When I arrived in Malaysia, I filed a complaint. Two days later, I got a response saying they’d credit my AirAsia account with 85 €. I refused and demanded a refund. I followed up three times—no answer. Then they sent me an email saying my case was closed and the 85 € had been credited.

Bottom line: no discussion allowed, and their decision is final. Their goal? To make sure I use that credit with them—and of course, I’ll end up spending more. If I don’t fly AirAsia again, they keep the 85 €. Pathetic! !

Hi there,

I recently flew with AirAsia on a Bangkok to Siem Reap flight, and had no issues with checked baggage that was paid for at the time of booking. Hopefully your bad experience isn’t part of a widespread scam on their end!!!

Best regards.
DA Davtahiti19 ·
I managed to "exchange" with them again. Well, "exchange" if you can call it that. The last email I received three days ago says they’ll refund me $50. I replied that the amount was $85, not $50, and that I didn’t understand. I’ve been following up every day since...
