Hi!
We're spending 4 days in Krabi in April—lots of walks, hikes, and sites to explore, all about 30 km away.
I'm wondering, since I'm not a big fan of minibuses (some of us get motion sickness easily), is it feasible to rent a car to explore the Krabi area?
Or is that a bad idea?
Thanks for your feedback!!!

Borneo: Semporna Archipelago Turtle Island National Park Traditional village in Sarawak Gunung Mulu National Park Borneo jungles to see orangutans
Do you think this is doable or not?

Hi there,
I need your thoughts on the rest of my itinerary.
We’re spending two nights in Phnom Penh and five in Siem Reap.
That leaves us with six days, and we’d like to do Kampot-Kep and Koh Rong Sanloem.
Originally, I wanted to go to Battambang, but I’m worried it might be too much.
Our flight back is on 22/03 at 6:30 PM from Phnom Penh.
Thanks in advance for your feedback and tips!
Hi everyone! 👋🏾
We’re in Indonesia right now, currently in Bali, and we’re heading to Sulawesi for a month. We’ll land in Makassar and are thinking of taking a domestic flight to Manado so we can ideally rent a car there and then drive back down to Makassar on our own. We plan to spend about two weeks in North Sulawesi and the remaining two weeks in West/South Sulawesi.
Do you think it’s doable to travel independently like this, or is it better to stick with buses/taxis?
Any good tips for renting a vehicle? Where to pick up and drop off, road conditions, etc.?
Thanks! 😅😅

Hi everyone!
Back on this forum!!
I’m planning my trip to Malaysia for June. I arrive in KL on June 3rd and leave on the 19th, also from KL. Here’s my itinerary: June 3: KL to Malacca Days 2, 3, 4: Malacca Evening of Day 4: Malacca to Penang Days 5, 6, 7: Penang Day 8: Flight from Penang to Kota Bharu (I found direct morning flights) Transfer from Kota Bharu to Kuala Besut, then to Perhentian Islands Days 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14: Perhentian Islands (still deciding which one) Day 14: Perhentian Islands to Kota Bharu, then flight to KL Days 14, 15, 16: KL Day 17: Return
What do you think of this plan? Is the Malacca to Penang bus trip late at night?
If you have any suggestions, I’m all ears! 😊

Hi everyone!
I’m planning a little trip to Indonesia for my 40th birthday.
My tickets are already booked, and I arrive in Bali on the evening of March 26.
I saw that Nyepi is on the 29th, so I decided to leave Bali and come back later.
I’ve made arrangements to go to Nusa Penida, but they observe Nyepi there too! So I’m thinking of leaving Nusa Penida on the evening of March 28 and would like to visit southern Lombok (especially Gili Gede and Ekas). My issue is that I can only find fast boats to Bangsal (the north of the island). Do you know if there are any transport options to southern Lombok (like Kuta Lombok)? In this southern region, do you have any great tips? I’m looking for places to go, but also drivers to take us around and hotels.
Thanks in advance and have a great day!

Hi everyone,
My husband and I are staying in Flores at the end of March/beginning of April—can anyone give me an idea of the daily rate for a car with a driver? As for shared taxis, are they easy to find for trips beyond a few kilometers?
If you have any contacts for friendly drivers, I’d love to hear them...
Thanks in advance! !

Does it seem feasible and reasonable to travel to Laos (or Cambodia) as early as January or February 2025?
I don’t have any precise information about the damage these countries have suffered.
Hi,
I'm currently in Ho Chi Minh City and was wondering if any ATMs don’t charge fees with a Visa card.
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
for our upcoming trip, our flight to Phuket is scheduled to land around 10:40 PM. After that, we’ll need to collect our luggage, etc. Will we still be able to find taxis at that time at Phuket Airport?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
Hi everyone,
When we travel abroad, we usually rent a car to be independent with our itinerary and free with our timing. But we get the feeling that it’s not so simple in Indonesia.
Is it feasible, for example, to drive from Bali to Komodo National Park by car? What are the roads like? Can you rent and return cars on these smaller islands?
Thanks for your replies.
Hi everyone,
we’re a couple in our thirties and we’ve decided to visit northwest Vietnam with AmicaTravel for their "meet-up in Lolo Land" circuit. I’m currently looking at the itinerary with the Lonely Planet and reading the many posts on this site, especially Lansay’s, which are really inspiring. Here are the stages of the circuit:
Day 1: Hanoi – arrival
Day 2: Hanoi visit
Day 3: Hanoi – Thac Ba
Day 4: Thac Ba – Luc Yen – Ha Giang
Day 5: Ha Giang – Dong Van
Day 6: Dong Van – Meo Vac – Bao Lac
Day 7: Bao Lac – Ba Be Lake
Day 8: Ba Be visit
Day 9: Ba Be – Cao Bang
Day 10: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc – Cao Bang
Day 11: Cao Bang – Lang Son
Day 12: Lang Son – Halong Bay
Day 13: Halong Bay – Hanoi
Day 14: Hanoi – departure
Otherwise, the period would be from April 21, 2012, to May 5, 2012, but this could vary by a day or two if it’s worth it. I haven’t made the reservation yet because I’m trying to find out if all the stages of the circuit are interesting (thanks to this forum). We’d like to stay with locals as much as possible and maybe spend an extra day in one region to avoid just "passing through"—settle in a bit. We’d also like to do some trekking, and I read in Lansay’s posts that Bac Ha would be a good option for that (this stage isn’t included in the initial circuit), unless other stages of the circuit are just as good for trekking.
Finally, regarding the last stage in Halong Bay, what’s the best way to explore it? It seems very crowded (and I don’t know if the junk boat included in the circuit is designed for a small group or very large groups, which we’d prefer to avoid if possible). I read a post here that I can’t find anymore about a couple who did a stage with a small stay on an island or something like that—it sounded paradise-like.
Generally, we’d like to avoid running into too many tourists (yes, I know it’s a bit paradoxical), but it’s mainly to encourage encounters with locals and maybe with a small group of travelers. If others want to do this circuit, why not... but we’re hoping to travel in a very small group (maximum 6 people).
Otherwise, for the flight, I was thinking of booking with Vietnam Airlines—is that a good choice? Thanks in advance for your great tips.

Hi,
I have very little time between Manila T2 and T3. Could you share a taxi number or tell me how to make sure I don’t miss my flight?
Thanks for your help! :)
Hi there. I wanted to check and asked Krungsri Bank if they offered a cash advance at the counter to avoid Thai ATM withdrawal fees. They told me yes, but only up to 200 baht. No, I didn’t forget a zero—it’s not even 6 €... That doesn’t get you very far.
Can anyone confirm this info, or are there banks that offer a larger cash advance? Krungsri is the only bank that does currency exchange in the town where I’m currently staying in Thailand.

Hi, right now, 28 km from Yasothon, there's a grand festival after the rice harvest. Puffed rice grains are strung on threads, forming curtain-like structures about 10 meters high—it's really impressive!
So beautiful and unique. The crowd is huge, and there's not a single foreigner except for us. A must-see. Absolutely.
Hi there,
We’re spending a week in Samui and then two in Phangan in February.
We’re looking to stay in places that aren’t too touristy, close to beautiful beaches and authentic villages... I know Koh Samui is very touristy, but are there any spots that are a bit more off the beaten path? Same for Phangan—what part of the island is the prettiest, most exotic, and authentic?
Thanks in advance...

Hello and happy New Year,
We’re two friends heading to Thailand for 11 days in February. It’s not much time, so we’re looking for great tips on mid-range accommodations, sights, restaurants, bars, and beautiful beaches in Bangkok.
I’m thinking Koh Phangan, probably on the west coast, preferably a bungalow, and we’re still undecided about Koh Samui. So if you’ve got any good addresses, we’re all ears!
Hi everyone, I’ve got a question I can’t seem to find an answer to! Is there a ferry between Penang (Butterworth) and Belawan (Medan, Sumatra) that doesn’t require going through Malacca to reach Dumai, since it’s too long a trip from there to Medan? Thanks!
Hi there,
I can’t seem to find a car rental with a driver for several days in Chiang Mai to explore the surrounding areas, preferably in the countryside/mountains, villages, etc.
Would anyone have a driver to recommend?
Thanks
Hi there! We’ll be in Singapore for a few days and have 9 days off from there. We’d love to visit Borneo, obviously not everything since we only have 9 days. Ideally, we’d like to spend the last 2 days near the sea in Sabah. Of course, we know we’ll only be able to see a small part of Borneo, but the logistics seem a bit tricky in such a short time.
There’s so much to do that I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. Any feedback from people who know the area (I imagine not many have been there for such a short trip...) would be great! Thanks!

Hi,
I’d been told it was between 2,000 and 2,500 THB per day. 3,000 THB for Doi Inthanon...
The driver I found gave me different prices depending on my destinations: 5,000 THB for the waterfalls in Doi Inthanon National Park, which I negotiated down to 4,000. Then 2,000 for Lamphun, 3,000 for another day, and two times 3,500 for two other itineraries I showed him. In total, 16,000 THB, which I negotiated down to 14,000.
I’m wondering if I overpaid...
Since I’m planning two more outings, I’d like to have a solid baseline for negotiating...
I’m right in the middle of peak season, and everything’s gone up considerably in Thailand. So I don’t want to put my foot in it by pointing out he might’ve overcharged me if that’s not the case... Thanks

Hi everyone, thanks so much for all your great tips!
Now for expenses: should we pay "big expenses" by card, the rest in cash, or exchange a large sum at the airport (with the risks that involves)? We’re staying for a month, mostly in the countryside rather than the city.
Thanks a bunch!
Hi everyone,
I’m happy to be back on the forum, and to be honest, I’ve missed being able to share with this amazing community 😛
I’m starting to plan a trip for September 2025 with my wife. I’d love to visit Bali, and I’ve been reading the forum posts.
Can you tell me if September is a good time to visit Bali?
We’re in our sixties, not exactly high-level athletes, but we do travel quite a bit. We don’t like changing hotels every day—we prefer to stay in one central spot and explore the area around it. If we need to move to make the most of it, I think twice max would be fine.
I’m going to contact a French-speaking guide (I read about it on the forum) to get an idea of pricing and options, but I’d really love to hear from people who’ve already stayed there during this period and get some tips on finding accommodations.
Thanks for your help—I’ll keep reading the Bali posts now 😉

Hi there, what’s good to do around BKK for 2 days outside of Bangkok? We’re wrapping up our Laos-Cambodia-Thailand trip. We don’t want to stay in BKK anymore (we’ve been there many times over the past 35 years), and someone mentioned Kanchanaburi. Is it worth it? Any other suggestions, keeping in mind we’re not looking for beaches (we already know Thailand’s beaches well). All recommendations are welcome—we’re on a tight schedule as we head back to Thailand on February 3rd and have 2 days to spend outside Bangkok from the 7th to the 9th of February. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! Tialou
Hi everyone,
I’m a die-hard fan of India, but it’s time I discovered Thailand too to broaden my Asian horizons.
I’m heading there on January 19, 2025, for a 46-day trip (no visa needed as I’m French). I’ve pored over a few guidebooks and travel blogs. Based on what caught my interest, I’ve put together a rough itinerary and list of sights. But since I know absolutely nothing about Thailand, I’m kind of flying blind here.
Since I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I’ve opted for a few bases where I’ll stay several days in the same place. That way, I won’t have to change locations and hotels every day or so, packing and unpacking my suitcase constantly. Instead, I plan to explore the surrounding area each day, within a maximum radius of 50 to 70 km.
So, first question: Is that kind of round-trip distance manageable in a day in Thailand?
In India, renting a car for a day—with a driver—currently costs around 35 to 40 € per day. Knowing that 1,300 to 1,500 THB would be my absolute max, and even then, only if I don’t rent a car every single day.
Which brings me to my second question: Am I being unrealistic?
Otherwise—third question—once I’m settled in the city I’ve chosen as my base, can I get around within that 50–70 km radius using public transport?
I’ve already booked all my hotels—with free cancellation—on booking.com at an average price of 950/1,000 THB per night. Does that put me in a good range for value for money? Or am I dreaming?
Here’s my plan:
BANGKOK (13 days, 14 nights): 1 week for exploring Bangkok – Kanchanaburi/Erawan National Park? – Ayutthaya/Lopburi? – Muang Boran – Samut – Songkram/Amphawa
Bangkok -> Chiang Mai by overnight train in first-class sleeper
CHIANG MAI (6 days/6 nights): Mae Hong Son – Hot springs – Chiang Dao – caves – Lamphun – other places to be decided on the spot based on what’s worth seeing and transport options
Chiang Mai -> Chiang Rai
CHIANG RAI (7 days/8 nights): Fang – Tha Ton – Chiang Saen – Doi Tung – Chiang Khong – Doi Ang Khang, Phu Chi Fah, etc.
Chiang Rai -> Phrae
PHRAE (4 days/5 nights): Lampang and surrounding areas, depending on what’s interesting to see
Phrae -> Loei
LOEI (4 days/5 nights): Phu Kradung – Chiang Khan and surrounding areas, depending on what’s worth seeing
Loei -> Buriram
PHIMAI (Nakhon Ratchasima/Khorat) (5 days/6 nights): Phimai – Prasat Muang Tam – Phanom Rung – Prasat Phanom Wan
Phimai -> Khorat (airport or train station) -> Bangkok (overnight in Bangkok)
Day 46: BANGKOK -> KOCHI
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice!

Hi there!
I’m heading to Bali for 15 days between July and August. I’d love some ideas for fun itineraries where I don’t have to switch accommodations more than 3 times. I’d like to explore nature, culture, and also enjoy some beach time. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!!
Hi there,
I’m heading to Bali at the end of August and I’d love to know if there are any transport options like buses. I’m planning to visit Tirta Empul temple and then make my way to Penelokan. Are there any local transport solutions, or is it necessary to hire a driver?

Hi everyone,
Following a last-minute cancellation from our guide due to illness, I’m looking for a guide—preferably French-speaking—for the day of February 5th in Phnom Penh.
We’re a group of 10 adults.
Thanks, Alain.
Hello everyone,
My husband and I are planning a trip to Thailand from January 2 to 10. Departure from Brussels on January 1 – arriving in Bangkok at 6:00 AM on January 2. Departure from Bangkok on January 11 at 2:00 AM, arriving in Brussels at 1:25 PM the same day. For professional and personal reasons, we can’t extend the trip.
I don’t plan on just lounging on a beach in Phuket, so with 9 days on the ground, I know it’s short... But having done this before in Hong Kong and Shanghai, I know it’s doable, refreshing, and enjoyable. We did it with the kids and included a 2- or 3-day stay at Disneyland in each city. Basically, we spent 5-6 days in each city.
Anyway, I’m reaching out because I’ve heard and read so many conflicting opinions that my head is spinning.
Following the saying, "don’t bite off more than you can chew," I’m assuming I should keep it simple. So I’m torn between just Bangkok or Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
If I go with the second option, I’m debating whether to head straight to Chiang Mai on the day we arrive (but given the flight times, we’d lose pretty much the whole day) or spend two days in Bangkok first, then go to Chiang Mai for 3-4 days, and return to Bangkok.
Thanks for your advice!

Hi there,
We’re visiting our daughter in Singapore during All Saints' Day. The plan is to spend 3-4 days there to enjoy time with her and explore Singapore, which we’ve never seen before.
After that, we’d like to spend 8 days somewhere not too far away—mixing sightseeing and maybe some beach time.
We’ve already been to Bali, Thailand, and northern Vietnam.
This’ll be starting October 20th, so, let’s just say it’s not the best season for Southeast Asia—I know, with the monsoon, we’re fully aware.
Any destination ideas for this time of year? I was thinking Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi?), Borneo (8 days?), or the Philippines, but I think that might be a bit too far for just 8 days.
Thanks for your thoughts!
