Entre 1998 et 2002, j'effectuais des voyages (jusqu'à 5 dans l'année) à Montréal (je suis française) et parfois, j'en profitais pour aller faire une petite ballade dans le Vermont ou à New York en voiture avec mon chum (canadien) et notre fille... Tout s'est toujours super bien passé jusqu'en 2002... "syndrôme post 9/11"...
Lors de notre arrivée à la frontière, le douanier, après m'avoir posé quelques questions, m'a dit ouvertement "tu es française, rentre chez toi ! Tu n'as rien à faire ici."... à la suite de quoi, ma voiture a été fouillée pendant plus d'une heure.
On m'a ensuite posé des tas de questions (le douanier remplissait un formulaire sur son PC) et on m'a donné un document pour repasser la douane canadienne (rebrousser chemin).
Avant de repartir, j'ai demandé au douanier quelle était la raison "officielle" de son refus... Il m'a répondu : "vous voulez un motif officiel ? Ben, par exemple, la photo de votre enfant n'est pas ressemblante sur le passeport (ma fille avait 1 an, la photo a été prise alors qu'elle avait quelques mois !) ou bien... vous n'avez pas suffisamment de justificatifs de votre résidence aux USA"...
Bref, je ne sais pas exactement ce qu'il me reprochaient au juste, "officiellement"... et je suis repartie à Montréal.
Je n'y suis jamais retournée aux USA depuis cette date (trop les boules)...
En 2012, je prévois, en famille, un voyage à Montréal avec un séjour à NYC (par la frontière terrestre), entre autre... et là... panique !
Que va-t-il m'arriver ? Vont-ils me laisser entrer cette fois ?
Je n'ai pas d'interdiction de séjour, il s'agit juste d'un refoulement pour "incident mineur"... mais avez-vous des conseils à me donner ? Avez-vous déjà été confrontés à cette situation ? Suis-je définitivement persona non grata sur le territoire ?
Mon conjoint a déjà fait les réservations (misère !)... (Paris-Montréal / Montréal-Paris)
Nous aurons néanmoins des passeports tout neufs, des justificatifs de réservation d'hôtel et emporterons nos billets d'avion retour pour Paris (même si nous partons de Montréal) et plein de sous dans les poches pour leur montrer que nous avons des $ à dépenser chez eux...
Le formulaire ESTA n'est pas nécessaire pour un passage à la frontière terrestre, je ne veux juste pas être confrontée à un nouveau refus, ce qui gâcherait nos vacances (2 adultes et 4 enfants...)
Certes l'ESTA n'est pas nécessaire pour une entrée par la route mais il faut néanmoins remplir le formulaire I94-W. Or, sur ce formulaire tu auras la question "Have you ever been denied [...] entry into the US ?" à laquelle tu seras obligée de répondre oui et qui devrait entrainer ton refus sur le territoire américain.
Il faut donc que tu fasses une demande de visa touristique auprès de l'ambassade à Paris: http://french.france.usembassy.gov/niv-tourisme-affaires.html
L’ESTA est obligatoire pour se rendre aux USA par air ou par mer.
Si tu vas à NY en voiture tu rempliras le I-94W (le petit carton vert) à la frontière.
Mais dans les 2 cas, ESTA ou I-94W, tu seras obligée de répondre à la même question :
F) L’admission aux Etats-Unis ou l’octroi d’un visa vous a-t-il déjà été refusé ? Un visa d’entrée aux Etats-Unis vous ayant été octroyé précédemment a-t-il été annulé ? OUI - NON.
Pour le I-94W, il est précisé :
Important : Si vos avez répondu « OUI » à un des points ci-dessus, veuillez contacter l’Ambassade Américaine avant d’effectuer votre voyage vers les Etats-Unis. L’admission sur le territoire américain pouvant vous être refusé.
C’était il y a 10 ans, mais tu ne sais pas ce que l’agent d’immigration a noté, ni combien de temps les données sont conservées…..
Si ton refoulement a été enregistré, un passeport neuf ne changera rien.
Je pense que le plus prudent serait de demander un visa.

Il y a 2ans je rentrais aux USA pour la 2ème fois, avec un visa tourisme, après être déjà entrée une première fois pour une durée de 3mois avec ESTA.jai été refoulée à l aéroport de Netwark, avec interdiction de séjour aux USA pdt 5 ans ... J'ai passée la nuit en prison, ... Un peu traumatisée de tout ça je n ose pas voyager ailleurs ... Je suis interdite de territoire us encore 3 ans ... J'aimerais aller en rep dominicaine en janvier... Avec lookea et ce pour une semaine. J'ai peur de rester à l aéroport une nvl fois ... Et que le cauchemar recommence... Il n'y auraita priori pas de raison mais bon ...
En ce qui vous concerne je tenterai de joindre l ambassade et de poser la question simplement, en expliquant votre histoire. Je ne sais pas s'ils ont un moyen de vérifier le refus de votre entrée précédente mais si c au bon vouloir du douanier cela me paraît aberent !
En ce qui me concerne j'étais dans une famille au pair non agrée qui m à fait travailler avec un visa tourisme ... Chose que j'ai accepté betement sans savoir les risques que j'encourais, j'avais une confiance aveugle en cette famille qui avait quand même contacté un avocat pour qq questions sécuritaires (plus pour elle que pour moi)...
Ne prend pas le risque de gâcher ton voyage, surtout s'il y a des enfants ...!

Avant de déposer ta demande ESTA, on te demande d’accepter les termes et conditions.
Et si tu as lu les conditions :
Une autorisation de voyage garantit-elle mon admission aux Etats-Unis ?
Votre autorisation de voyage électronique accordée, vous pouvez vous rendre aux Etats-Unis dans le cadre du Programme d’Exemption de Visa, mais votre admission sur le territoire n’est pas garantie. A votre arrivée aux Etats-Unis, vous serez contrôlé(e) au poste frontière par un agent d’immigration, lequel pourra refuser votre admission dans le cadre du Programme d’Exemption de Visa ou en application d’un article de la loi américaine.
Alors dire que c’est aberrant, peut-être mais c’est comme ça. Chaque pays est libre d’accepter qui il veut.
C’est moche ce qui t’est arrivé, mais c’est les risques quand on part travailler « au noir ».
Bon, pour contacter l'ambassade des EU, il faut être en possession de son passeport (et de sa carte de crédit !)...
Mon dossier pour le passeport est en cours... je ne l'ai pas encore...
- Lorsque que j'ai été refusée, j'étais déjà en possession du carton vert (à cette époque, l'ESTA n'existait pas) car j'avais fait une escale à Philadelphie avant de me rendre à Montréal. C'est lorsque j'ai voulu passer la frontière terrestre Canada/USA que l'agent me l'a retiré (il était encore valable).
Je n'ai jamais travaillé ni au Canada, ni aux USA... Je n'ai jamais enfreint les lois sur l'immigration ou quelque autre loi... etc. Je n'étais qu'une touriste "française" indésirable, quelques mois après les attentats... où la France était mal vue car elle ne voulait pas participer à "la guerre" en Irak. D'ailleurs, l'agent me l'a dit clairement : "tu es française, tu n'es pas la bienvenue chez nous"... c'est seulement par la suite qu'il s'est vanté d'avoir autant de motifs "légaux" qu'il le souhaitait (le monsieur tout puissant...) : photo de passeport ne correspondant pas (de ma fille de qq mois...) et justificatifs de domicile aux US insuffisants... et qu'il s'est fait plaisir en fouillant ma voiture pendant 2 heures...
Si réellement il a écrit ça sur son PC... est-ce une raison suffisante pour m'obliger, 10 ans après, de faire les démarches pour une demande de visa dans le but de séjourner 3 nuits à New York ?... Pffffff, c'est du délire :(... Je veux juste faire plaisir aux enfants et un crétin risque de tout foutre en l'air à cause de ses convictions de l'époque. Suis dégoûtée...
Effectivement, un refoulement par la douane/immigration americaine entraine generalement une interdiction de territoire de 5 ans. Vous devez faire une demande de visa B-1/B-2 de touriste quand vous avez ete refoule a la frontiere americaine, et donc vous n'etes pas eligible pour ESTA. Ceci se fait en remplissant le formulaire DS-160 sur le site du Departement d'Etat, puis vous aurez un entretien au Consulat a Paris.
si tu veux pas te prendre la tete/
+ fait une demande esta si tu voyages par AIR , l avantage c est si voyage par terre tu auras une idee de tes chances de passer la frontiere
+ ou bien la vois d or depense 120 $ et demande un visa B1/B2 comme ca les risques de se faire refouler sont encore minimiser

De retour en France après mon passage aux US !
Finalement, j'ai été franche avec le douanier, je lui ai dit quelle mésaventure il m'était arrivé lors de mon dernier séjour... bref, que le douanier m'a obligée à rebrousser chemin en traitant de "française", pour résumer.
Le douanier, amusé, m'a dit : "réellement ? Je vais faire des recherches sur vous et je vais vous dire exactement ce qu'il en est..."
Il a cherché sur son ordinateur, puis a téléphoné, puis a cherché encore, puis a téléphoné... bref, je suis restée environ une heure au bureau des douanes pour que finalement, il me dise :
"Vous êtes inconnue dans nos fichiers, bienvenue aux Etats Unis !"...
C'était le monde à l'envers, c'est moi qui lui demandais s'il en était certain...
Finalement, j'ai rempli mon petit carton vert, sur lequel j'ai tout de même inscrit que j'avais été refoulée une fois... et tout était correct.
Aimant le risque, j'ai même passé la frontière deux fois... :)
Je sais que dorénavant, je suis admise sur le territoire américain !

L'agent américain d'il y a 10 a fait preuve d'un très grand manque de professionnalisme . 😠 il n'est pas permis dans le code d'éthique du travail au gouvernement (américain ou canadien ) d'agir de la sorte. C'est très dommage et tu sembles avoir été victime de discrimination raciale. Enfin bon, tout semble régler maintenant. Mais pour ceux qui lisent sachez que vous avez le droit d'adresser une plainte à l'employeur dans de pareils cas .

I’m planning a trip from France to Alberta/British Columbia, and I’m unsure about which bank card to use for the security deposit with the rental company (I’m thinking of going with AVIS).
I contacted Avis Canada, and they told me a credit card is absolutely required. I asked my bank for a credit card (a *real* credit card), but they only offered me a deferred debit card.
My question: For a rental with Avis Canada, is a Gold International Mastercard deferred debit card usable for the security deposit needed to finalize the rental? Is the "CREDIT" label enough? (Some cards say "CREDIT" and others say "CARTE DE CREDIT"—seems minor, but it’s actually a big deal in how the card works.)
I’ve seen conflicting info everywhere I look... My bank says it’s *usually* okay (the deferred debit card), while Avis Canada insists it *must* be a credit card, not debit—even when I mention the deferred debit card.
I know the whole credit card concept is already confusing, and on top of that, some sites say a deferred debit card counts as a credit card, while others say it doesn’t.

I’ll explain my situation.
Unfortunately, I lost my passport, and I only realized it two weeks before my departure for a humanitarian mission in Libya. I’m a nurse, and this mission really means a lot to me.
First, I applied for an emergency passport, but it was denied by the Val-d'Oise prefecture on the grounds that a planned humanitarian mission wasn’t considered an urgent reason.
So, I submitted a biometric passport application on July 20th. Since then, the tracking has been stuck, and the town hall can’t (or won’t) give me any clear information. Every time I call, I get a different story. The last update I received was that the passport had been produced since July 23rd with a status of "about to be shipped," but nothing since then.
I’ve managed to push my departure back to next Tuesday at the latest, but I’m starting to really panic.
Have any of you submitted an application around July 20th, especially in Val-d'Oise (95)? How long did you wait between the passport being produced and it being available at the town hall? Is it normal for this step to take this long?
This mission means so much to me. I had everything organized, and I’m also supposed to attend a friend’s wedding right after near the border.

I’m a bit embarrassed because I need to travel to Quebec from February 27th to March 13th. I’m a regular visitor to Canada—this will be my 10th trip since 1997, plus a year as a permanent resident (2000–2001) and a cross-country run from Vancouver to Halifax in 2011. So, I’m definitely not a terrorist!
But since our last trip in July 2015, they’ve introduced this eTA thing. Seems more like a way to make money than to actually secure Canada, if you ask me, but anyway, that’s not the point.
I applied for an eTA for myself, my wife, and our two kids. They all got approved within hours, but not me! I was asked to create a GC key and then an IRCC account, which I did. Normally, you get news within 72 hours, but since Monday, January 15th, nothing!
In the "message" section of the account, it says "explanation letter (required)" with a deadline of January 25th, but I can’t find any explanation anywhere—despite searching the Canadian government website and Google. No links, nothing!
I’ve emailed them but haven’t heard back yet. I’m thinking of calling the Canadian embassy in Paris tomorrow. Even though I’m not stressing yet, it’d be a bummer if everyone else got to go without me!
If anyone’s had this issue before or knows what this explanation letter is about, I’d love to hear more.

I bought a one-way flight (Ryanair) and a return flight (EasyJet) to spend a week in Morocco in April.
My passport expires 3 weeks after the return date.
Some websites say the passport must be valid for 3 months at the time of entry.
However, it will still be valid both on entry and return, but its validity will only be 1 month at the time of entry (and 3 weeks on the return date, everything prepaid).
It's an individual family trip.
The consulate can't give me an answer—they're still looking into it (really!)
Last year, we stayed for 3 months in Thailand, north of Khao Lak, and were able to benefit from the 2-month visa exemption, renewable for one month by going to Takua Pa to validate a 1-month extension (1,900 baht).
This year, it’s a disaster for us—not only were we planning a 4-month stay, adding a visa run in between (which some say is quite risky), but the law is apparently changing in the coming months with the return of the 1-month exemption (plus the usual 1-month option). So, we looked into applying for a 6-month multiple-entry visa, allowing a maximum of 60 consecutive days in Thailand. However, I can’t find anywhere the minimum time required outside Thailand between two stays—do any of you have an idea?

As a French national, I need to obtain a short-stay visa that can be converted to a long-stay one. To do this, I have to send the required documents to the Madagascar embassy in Paris.
No issues with that procedure so far.
If I get this visa, once I arrive in Madagascar, I’ll need to provide the same documents to the Ministry of the Interior in Anosy. I’m trying to find an email address or website for the Ministry to check which documents I need to submit (I think they ask for additional ones).

I’d like to know if anyone has already applied for a private visa to Russia with an invitation from a Russian resident.
I traveled earlier this year with an e-visa, but since I want to stay longer, I’ll be visiting my friend who lives in eastern Russia.
For the visa application, does the invitation need to be on an official paper form issued by the Russian ministry? And most importantly, do I need to present the original for the application, or is there an electronic version that can be sent directly to the consulate in France?

I filled out the B2 form to apply for a visa, created an account on Atvis to pay the visa fees and schedule a meet-up, but every time I try to pay with my Boursobank Visa 1st card, they refuse the payment with a message telling me to check my details (address), even though everything is correct. Does anyone know why this is happening, or maybe they don’t accept Visa cards? Are you aware of this?

Paper documents might not be accepted.

I’ve read that China may ask for proof of exit within 30 days (flight ticket or other reservation). Since we’d be leaving by land, I’m wondering how this works in practice.

Is a train/bus ticket to Vietnam sufficient?

My wife and I are heading to the US.
On her ticket, it only has her maiden name (e.g., Martine DUPOND).
On her passport, it’s written as Martine DUPOND épouse AVRY.
No issues for travel, I hope I did the right thing with the ticket?
Then for the ESTA, is just Martine DUPOND enough, or do I need to include the "épouse AVRY" part like on the passport?
