Entry Formalities for Hong Kong and China
Hi, I’m planning a Paris–Hong Kong round trip with a return from Chongqing to Paris, spanning 28 days in November 2026.

The flight is with Air China, with a few hours’ layover in Beijing each time (I plan to stay inside the airport).

I’ve reread the conditions several times, but since I’m never entirely sure, I’d love your input.

Are we all clear that visa exemptions apply?

For arrival in Hong Kong, crossing the Hong Kong–China land border (via Shenzhen), and the return flight from Chongqing?

Thanks for your insights.

Marrakech: Great Tips and Things to Avoid?
hi there,

I’m just a few days away from my trip to Marrakech—I’m leaving from November 13th to 20th and bringing my parents along! I’d love to plan my stay as best as I can, and I’m sure the forum crew can help. So, here are my questions:

- Where’s the best place to exchange money without getting ripped off? The owner of the riad where we’re staying told us to avoid doing it at the airport because it’s really expensive and to do it in the medina instead, near Jemaa el-Fna square.

- Which traditional hammams do you recommend that are reasonably priced? How much should we budget for one? That’ll help me plan my expenses.

- What are some nice restaurants in the medina?

- I’d also like to know roughly how much to expect for a tea, a meal, a taxi, a djellaba, and babouches. I don’t want to get overcharged and would like to know what to expect.

- What are the must-do activities and places to visit?

Thanks in advance for your help....

Best destination for a first one-month trip with 2- and 5-year-old kids in 2027?
Hello,

After scouring the forum without managing to decide, I thought I’d ask for your advice! Before becoming a mom, we traveled for a year from Iran to Indonesia, and now my partner and I are finally ready to take our first big one-month trip with our kids. We’d like 2 or 3 places to visit, settle in, and explore the surrounding area. We’re looking for a destination that’s fairly easy (since our kids aren’t always easy themselves), but I’m hesitant about Thailand (which I didn’t enjoy because it felt too touristy at the time). I was thinking about Vietnam, which I don’t know at all. Maybe Laos, but spending a few days near a nice beach would be relaxing with two little ones full of energy… We don’t want to rush through crowded, commercial sites—we want to take our time and discover beautiful places.

Thanks for your tips! !

Stay near Agios Nikolaos: what to visit in the area?
Hi there, We're heading to Crete at the end of September, staying in a hotel near Agios Nikolaos—Zeus Premium Mirabello Bay. Has anyone stayed there before, or at least in that area? What are the possible outings? Are there buses to get around easily? Is the weather still pleasant then? Thanks for your feedback!

Tanzania Classics (Safari & Zanzibar)
I hesitated about writing this travel journal... This summer, we only did the classics (the 3 northern parks and Zanzibar) and let a local agency take care of everything from start to finish.

No craziness, no risks, no sleeping under the stars, no self-drive, no venturing off the beaten path, no incidents, and not even any delays in the pre-planned itinerary...

But don’t think we were disappointed! The whole family (there were 6 of us) came back with smiles and memories of great moments spent together. So, if you're looking for a "classic" way to discover Tanzania, this is the place to be.

Our 2-week itinerary: - Arusha (1 night upon arrival) - Tarangire (1 night) - Ngorongoro (2 nights in Karatu then Irmisigiyo) - Serengeti (3 nights in Robanda, Togoro Plains, and Seronera) - Zanzibar Stone Town (1 night) - Zanzibar Matemwe (3 nights) - Zanzibar Jambiani (3 nights)

Hakuna matata!

Questions about travel times and airline for Nepal circuit with Capitales Tours
Hello,

I’m interested in the 10-day/8-night "Discover Nepal" tour offered by Capitales Tours, among others. For Day 4, it lists Kathmandu-Mugling-Pokhara as 200 km and 8/9 hours of travel. Is this duration due to the road conditions? I assume the stop in Mugling for lunch is included in the travel time.

For Pokhara-Chitwan, only the distance is mentioned: 160 km. Should I expect a long bus ride there as well?

The proposed flights would be with AIR-INDIA via DELHI. We had issues with AIR-INDIA before—they denied us boarding for Paris even though we arrived at the airport more than 3 hours early. There was no specific counter for PARIS; the counters were for all destinations, and we waited in line for over 2.5 hours only to be told "too late"... Thanks for your advice: Mum49 Is it still like this?

Private tour on Cheow Lan Lake... Who to contact?
Hello, After 1 night in Khao Sok, I’d like to find a 2 Days 1 Night package on the lake. After reading a lot, I decided to "break the bank" and treat ourselves to a private tour—mainly to avoid the crowds. But after contacting several operators, they offer "private tours" that are very expensive (around 700 €), yet in the details, the boats can only leave from the pier at 10 AM like everyone else. (I was hoping to leave much earlier.) The morning program is the same for everyone too (private or not). They drop us off at noon at our floating hotel (I’d chosen Phupha Waree). Free afternoon (swimming or kayaking in front of the hotel). We head back by boat for a 1-hour sunset ride. And the next morning, we leave the hotel at 8 AM to be at the pier by 9:30 AM at the latest—end of the trip.

So basically, we’re paying a lot for a private tour just to do the same thing as everyone else at the same time.

Or maybe I just had bad luck in my search. I contacted Panida Ladi, who’s very popular on forums. We’d agreed on a private tour that matched my request (departure from the pier at 8 AM, very personalized itinerary). We settled on the itinerary and price, she asked for a Wise transfer for a 30% deposit, confirmed receipt of the deposit. Then 30 minutes later, she messaged me to say she was canceling everything because it was impossible to do the requested tour—and promised a quick refund of my deposit.

So here’s my question: Who’s done a *real* private tour on this lake? Who can recommend a reliable agency? Is it even really possible to do a private tour here?

Thanks, PS: My trip is planned for November

Local agency for organizing a private 2-week trip to Mongolia
Hi everyone, We’ve got our tickets for Mongolia in August 2027 (yes, booking way ahead saves money...). We’re looking for contacts at a reliable local agency that could help us organize our trip, preferably with a French-speaking contact. First, we’d like to see what’s possible to do in 2 weeks, at what price, knowing we’d like to visit at least the Gobi Desert and Terejii National Park. On one hand, we want to be independent for some things (accommodation in Ulaanbaatar, for example), but have support for the rest (domestic flights, driver, visits, transfers, etc.). If you’ve already traveled with an agency that exceeded your expectations, I’d love to get their details. Thanks a bunch!

Feasibility of Japan itinerary: Kyoto - Iya - Honshu
Hi there,

We’re arriving as a group of three in Tokyo on Saturday, October 17th, then heading straight to Kyoto by direct train. On Sunday and Monday, we’ll explore Kyoto, and in the evening, we’ll take a train to Osaka to spend the night. On Tuesday, we’ll pick up a rental car at Itami Airport for a 6-day/5-night road trip around Shikoku: - 2 nights in the Iya Valley - Thursday morning, we’ll head to Matsuyama for 2 nights. - Saturday, we’ll visit Mima (town, a few temples + overnight stay) and return on Sunday to drop off the car in Osaka. We’ll leave very early on Monday the 26th by plane for Aomori in northern Honshu, where we’ll pick up another rental car at the airport for a 5-day/4-night trip: - Day 1: Tsugaru Peninsula (Takayam Inari, Cape Tappi, Kanita); overnight in Kanita - Day 2: Ferry transfer to the Mutsu Peninsula (cliffs, Lake Usori); overnight in Shimofuro - Day 3: Head to the Hakkoda Mountains and onsens galore; overnight TBD - Day 4: Return the car in Aomori by noon and explore the city before taking the train to Tokyo in the evening We’ll spend Friday night in Tokyo, wander around on Saturday, and head home on Sunday.

Thoughts on the road feasibility of this trip? We’ll be there right in the middle of Koyo season, so it’ll be busy... I know it’s a lot of driving, but there are two of us who can take turns. We’re not afraid of driving, even in the mountains and on the left side! Just wondering, are we going to be rushing, or is this manageable? AI says it’s all good, but it’s not the one driving... Any tips for booking accommodations in the Iya Valley? Not many places have email addresses or websites (I know Booking.com exists, but not all listings are on there... and given the season, I think it’s better to book ahead!). Same question applies for northern Honshu. For the rental car, I’m thinking of going with Alamo since at least it’s in French and straightforward, but are there any direct rental companies with user-friendly websites (Toyota Rentacar, ugh... 🏴‍☠️)? Another question: With so many trains, is it even necessary to book them in advance? Can we just go to the ticket counter and grab seats on the spot? For paying for the rental car, do we need a credit or debit card?

Thanks for your help!

Canceled and rescheduled flight the day before: Am I entitled to a hotel reimbursement during my layover?
Hello,

Back in February, I booked a flight with Air France-KLM from Lyon to San Diego with a layover in Amsterdam (flights operated by KLM). The flight is scheduled for late August. My Lyon→Amsterdam flight was canceled by KLM in June, and a replacement flight the evening before was booked for me. So, I’ll end up spending the night at Amsterdam Airport to catch my flight to San Diego the next morning.

Since the cancellation happened more than 14 days before departure, I know I’m not entitled to financial compensation (EU Regulation 261/2004). But am I entitled to reimbursement for a hotel night in Amsterdam?

Flight canceled - zero refund: Etna eruption
Hi there, We had planned a trip to Sicily in August, and due to the volcanic eruption of Mount Etna, my flight was canceled. The airline is refunding the outbound flight, but none of the non-refundable expenses: accommodation booked through Booking, rental car, and the return flight aren’t covered. My SUPER Gold card doesn’t work in this specific case! :( If anyone has been in this situation, could you let me know if you were able to get any recourse and, if so, how? Thanks in advance

Leaving for Morocco by car: ferry crossing price
Hi, I’d like to head to Morocco next week with my car. I’ve looked online at all the different info about the ferry crossing to Tangier, but I’m finding it really expensive. Is there a way to buy tickets in Spain? Or another way to get the Algeciras–Tangier crossing cheaper? Thanks for any tips or info!

Requirements for travel to Russia and Mongolia
Hi there, I’m planning a trip to Russia and Mongolia, starting from France. Crossing the border at Poland/Belarus or Georgia/Russia—other borders seem either closed or complicated. Tourist visas for 3 months with multiple entries. Do you have any info on Russian companies that cover a 4x4 vehicle for 3 months, and what prices in rubles or euros you’ve paid?

Which bank did you use for expenses? (EuroMastercard and Visa cards no longer work.)

Regarding Russian SIM cards, a new system called "Gosuslugi" has been introduced. How long did it take you to get one, and what steps did you follow?

Thanks

Price and reviews for excursion + overnight to Erg Chegaga from M'hamid
Hi there,

We found a guide who offers the trip from M'hamid to a camp (departure at 3 PM, tea, meal, camel ride, overnight stay, breakfast, and return to M'Hamid by 11 AM the next day via the sacred oasis). He quoted us a price of 380 € for April. What do you think of this rate? This might sound like a silly question, but is it common to negotiate the price for this kind of thing (we're booking from France)? It’s still a big part of our travel budget.

Thanks

Limnos - airbase: any noise issues?
Hi there, the island of Limnos (or Lemnos) looks like a great spot for a September trip: not too many tourists at that time, plenty of hiking opportunities, beaches, villages, etc. That said, guidebooks mention an airbase on the island, with some sources saying there are more or less frequent aircraft flyovers. For those who’ve been there—how’s the situation with this? Lots of air traffic or noise issues? Thanks in advance

A Guide to Kashmir
Arthur Neve (1859–1919), an English doctor and missionary, dedicated most of his life to his passion for Kashmir, a region he wrote several books about—including this guide (18 editions published between 1890 and 1945).

This copy (225 pages, 9th edition, 1913), published in Lahore, features dozens of detailed itineraries with maps, covering campsites, mountain pastures, river crossings, and more. Among them, you can trek from Srinagar to Khapalu and then to Baltistan, or "travel" from Leh to Yarkand (Xinjiang) via the Nubra Valley, along with other unexpected destinations. The guide also includes suggestions for shikara rides, houseboat rentals, and gear for hunting, camping, fishing, and photography. Plus, it lists various supplies like chocolate, Egyptian cigarettes, frames, and alcohol. Note that the Murree Brewery, relocated to Rawalpindi, is still operational—though, in theory, the predominantly Muslim population can’t access it. I found this book in a box of old books, and you can still find copies on Anglo-Saxon websites—though often at prohibitive prices.

Free public transport for seniors
Hello In some Polish cities, seniors benefit from free public transport. My question is: does this also apply to EU foreigners? On paper, yes, but I know some travelers have run into unsympathetic inspectors in the past who refused to grant this discount to non-Polish people. That said, these situations are a few years old now. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

Tourist scams in poorer countries?
In some countries, the price charged to tourists is often higher than the one for locals.

Is it legal for a restaurant, for example, to have a "price for locals" and a "price for foreigners"? Do they have the right to do that? (Because it really annoys me—you can’t imagine how much money I’ve lost to this scam.)

Aren’t there any local organizations that could call out this scam?

At the same time, since this kind of scam happens often in poorer countries, the money I lose ultimately goes to those countries, so it’s like I’m donating to a humanitarian organization. So in the end, it doesn’t bother me *that* much—when I get scammed, I just tell myself I’m doing a generous act to help the poor in that country.
