Pour ma part, mes rares "deceptions" ont été le lac powell (sympa pour faire une pause mais à côté de toutes les merveilles autour de Page ca me semble pas indispensable), et la route 66 (à moins d'être un féru de cette route historique, ca n'a pas grand interet).
Sinon, on etait resté 2 jours au GC (enfin 1jour+1/2 journée) et on aurait peut etre pu faire 1 journée pleine seulement.
Mes coups de coeur: Monument Valley, Yosemite et Las Vegas, 3 endroits très differents car je crois qu'en fait ce qui m'a plu dans l'ouest américain, c'est la diversité des choses qu'on peut y voir et y faire en 2 ou 3 semaines. 🙂 San Francisco m'a beaucoup plus aussi, mais on me l'avait tellement dit avant que ca m'a moins marqué 😛
Je pars bientôt et un ami m'a dit de ne pas rater Antelope. Mais c'est marrant je me posais la même question que tu souleves : le monde dans un endroit qui semble finalement assez petit. Mpi qui adore les photos sans pekins dessus....Mais bon je ne passerai quand même pas à côté sans y aller. Je verrais.....C'est en Juin.

Mais il n'y a pas le même plaisir à le faire, ni la même liberté (sauf si on prend un truc tout open et là c'est aussi cher).
Là je l'ai bâti avec ce que je savais, les guides et les conseils précieux des internautes ou amis et du coup mes plaisirs et mes éventuels petits ratés seront les miens 😉, ça compte aussi je trouve !
Ben moi, à tarif égal, j'ai fait un voyage de 25 jours plutôt que 15 .... sans compter, comme tu le dis, qu'il a été fait à mon rythme et ds les hôtels que j'avais judicieusement choisis.
N'as-tu pas oublié, ds tes calculs, d'inclure ts les suppléments demandés par les TO (genre 4x4 facultatif à Monument Valley et qui te coûte un max si tu choisis cette option)?

Honnêtement je ne sais pas trop. J'étais parti pour ne pas me trop me casser la tête et exceptionnellement passé par un TO en formule individuelle, loc de voiture. Mais il y avait des contraintes qui ne me plaisaient pas trop : notamment faire toutes les demandes d'hôtels et une fois faites, il fallait s'y tenir. Or je n'étais pas prêt à tout choisir et en plus certains hôtels ne me plaisaient pas et en plus je ne savais pas quelle chambre était réservée (il y a vraiment des tarifs differents dans le même hôtel.. car toutes les chambres ne sont pas les mêmes). Mais bon l'agence m'a donné une fourchette large suivant le niveau de prestations que je choisissais et au final, en le faisant en indiv, je suis dans cette fourchette. Peut être ai je mieux ?? (la voiture j'ai choisi une full size, c'était une intermédaire voire compacte avec le TO).
Autre point : de toute façon les chambres et le vol n'étaient pas liées en cas de soucis car je ne prenais de toutes façons pas le vol avec le TO car le départ de Paris ne me convient pas vu ma localisation géo. Alors quitte à prendre le vol et les hôtels séparement, autant tout faire en indiv.
Je dois donc avouer (shame on me) que cela n'a pas été le prix le facteur déterminant pour le faire par moi même.
J'ai fait les 2, adoré les 2. Et du monde à Upper, il y en avait. Mais on arrive quand même à faire des photos, il faut s'imposer un peu. Je prenais sur pied, plusieurs poses, je bloquais le chemin, ça râlait un peu, je râlais plus fort. 😉😎😎😎

En individuel, les prix peuvent se valoir (et encore), mais dès qu'on est 2, le voyage organisé perd de son intérêt financier. Sans parler de l'aspect qualitatif. Pas sûre que tu choisirais de loger dans les hôtels (et endroits) qu'ils réservent aux clients, et de suivre leur rythme haletant... 😉 Tu as fait le bon choix !

C'est évident mais personne n'en voit la couleur 😕 et ils négocient les hôtels les moins demandés.
Comme par hasard, à Vegas, tout le monde se retrouve toujours à Fremont Street dans des hôtels qu'on peut avoir à moins de 40 ou 50$ en individuel.
Et il font payer plein pot pour des étapes excentrées comme Bakersfield, Laughlin ou Flagstaff. Là pas la peine de négocier, c'est toujours moins cher qu'ailleurs 😛

Oui je fais en 3 semaines (et sans faire L.A.) ce qu'il font en douze jours. J'exagere à peine.......Alors non merci.
Seule chose dommage : fut un temps l'intérêt de faire tout seul c'était aussi de changer ses plans au dernier moment (les hôtesl sont annulables jusqu'à 24h avant sans pénalités). Mais il semble que maintenant, certes, je pourrai annuler mais bernique pour retrouver une chambre (quand on reste dans les endroits connus......et le touriste que je suis, ben il va dans des endroits connus.)
Je m'aperçois que j'aurai dû mettre un jour de plus sur la côte Ouest et donc supprimer un jour sur la sierra nevada (du côté des parcs à Sequoia). Mais maintenant si je veux décaler cela veut dire arriver un jour + tôt à Yosémite et là c'est vraiment coton pour trouver de la place, et un jour + tôt à SF (plus facile mais pas sûr dans le mêm hôtel) et trouver un hôtel à Monterey/Carmel pour casser le trajet SF-LA (que je coupe à Santa Maria)
Bref ce n'est pas aussi facile de faire au dernier moment que dans un coin comme Bali par exemple où je n'avasi réservé que la 1ère nuit.
ce que tu dis est vrai dans l'ensemble mais pas partout, et pour 2 raisons :
- Il y a des endroits où il n'y a pas 40000 hôtels donc iles proposent les mêmes (Bryce /Zion /MV/DV)
- A vegas en tous cas, ils proposent à peu près tous les hôtels connus, Du Louxor au Caesar en passant par + haut.
Là je parle bien en autotour où on est libre de ses étapes. Puisqu'en bus-bétaillère sur un circuit où on repart au coup de sifflet cela ne me viendrait même pas à l'idée de m'être renseigné.
Oui, c'est vrai qu'il faut bien réfléchir à tout cela avant... mais c'est un confort tout de même aussi !

C'est pas faux 😛 Sauf si je me souviens, la plupart du temps, ils affichent des prix à la personne et c'est X fois le même montant ... donc quand on est plusieurs, c'est loin de refléter la réalité du tarif 🤪
A bali c'était très fastoche de trouver des superbes chambres (style avec ta piscine dans le jardin) à des prix négociés....😉
Mais c'était fin Août / Début Septembre. En plein Juillet et Août c'est plus difficile dans certains endroits comme le Sud (mais beurk) et la région d'Ubud.

Les villes:
- Page ( A part Horseshoes Bend et Antelop Canyon)
- Seligman et en générale toute la portion de la route 66 que l'on a fait a part Oatman .
- Monterey
Il me faut chercher loin pour trouver des déceptions dans l'Ouest ! 😐
Alors, sans être de grosses déceptions, disons, que sur 2x1mois de balades dans ces coins, ce qui nous a paru le moins bien était :
- Une balade en KAYAK sur le LAC POWEL : Trop chaud mais surtout à cause des tas de bateaux à moteur ou jetski qui fonçent plein gaz se moquent pas mal de te destabiliser et t'envoyer contre les parois rocheuses 🤪 bref je déconseille.
- La visite de CALICO : BOF et commercial, bref trop peu authentique par rapport à BODIE !
- JACKSON HOLE : peu d'intérêt à part les gift shops... 😐 Si j'avais su j'aurais réservé plutôt une nuit dans le parc même de grand Teton, au bord de l'eau !

Quant a moi, je n'ai rien regrette, mais parfois j'etais un tout petit peu decu au: Petrified Forest NP, Cedar Breaks NM, Lassen NP, Theodore Roosevelt NP (Dakota du Nord), la vallee Napa (je prefere Sonoma), Kings Canyon NP, San Diego😊 (mais son zoo est magnifique), le musee Getty a LA (mais j'adore le Huntington Library & Gardens, et le musee Norton Simon).
Avec un temps de retard : moi j' avais assez aimé l' architecture du musée Getty , et surtout le site et les jardins . Depuis ceux-ci je trouve qu'il y a une vue extraordinaire sur l' interminable zone urbaine de Los Angeles , et surtout une fascinante perspective sur les autoroutes dont la circulation intense des véhicules les fait ressembler à des fleuves scintillants au soleil .
Nous avions également beaucoup apprécié la Huntington Library et le Norton Simon , et + généralement Pasadena et ses magnifiques zones résidentielles .
Pour Las Vegas , c' est vrai que c' est une "curiosité" , une énorme excroissance de kitch et de vie artificielle débridée . Mais ça mérite vraiment d' être vu une fois dans sa vie , disons 48h . Pas de regret d' y être allé .
Je plains sincèrement celle qui a posé la question de départ sur les déceptions , de devoir faire le tri dans l' énorme masse des appréciations variables des uns et des autres sur tout ce qu' ils ont vu dans l' Ouest ! ... 😉

En effet, je vois bien que tout le monde a des coups de coeur differents.
Personellement, je n'ai jamais bien compris l'attraction de la Death Valley pour les Europeens. C'est un endroit que je ne trouve pas particulierement interessant. Par contre, je pense que le Grand Canyon est vraiment quelque chose a voir.
Las Vegas aussi ne serait pas sur ma liste de visites mais je vois que tout le monde veut y aller.
Personne ne semble faire la Highway 49 en Californie du Nord ou on passe par des petites villes rendues célèbre pendant la période Gold Rush (1949). On semble filer directement de San Francisco à Yosemite.
Bodie est vraiment "overrated" mais c'est dans les guides touristiques, donc il faut y passer 🙂
Je préfère aussi la Sonoma Valley a celle de Napa.
J'ai proposé le Getty Museum a L.A. mais mes amis n'ont pas l'air de trop apprecier. Ils veulent voir les lettres d'HOLLYWOOD !

De plus de savoir que c'est un point bas (-96 m) ça donne comme un petit frisson dans le dos, nous avions eu le même sentiment au bord de la mer morte (même si celle-ci est encore plus bas (-400 m) 😇

1. Le Parc du Yellowstone. Fabuleux! Tout ces animaux, les chutes d'eau et les phénomènes volcaniques avec plein de bruits, d'odeur et de couleurs!
2. Bryce Canyon: se promener au milieu des hoodoos! C'est féérique! C'est beau!
3. Arches: Voir autant d'arches, dont certaines on ne sait pas comment elles arrivent à tenir dans un aussi petit périmètre c'est exceptionnel! Une arche à elle seule résume la beauté de ce parc (et de toute la région de Moab): Delicate Arch.
Mention spéciale au Grand Canyon (grandiose), à Monument Valley (mythique)... Bref je finirais par tout citer! 😇
Je n'ai pas vraiment de déceptions pour le moment. Si je devais faire quand même le difficile je dirais Antelope Canyon (à cause du monde mais je m'y attendais), le Lac Powell (mais on n'a pas fait de bateau donc ceci explique sans doute cela) et la deuxième fois à Vegas n'a pas été aussi cool que la première. Donc je dirais que c'est quelque chose à faire une fois dans sa vie mais après... 😕 Du coup cette année, on passe par Death Valley mais on ignore totalement Vegas 😛. Bon ça reste quand même une bonne ville étape d'une nuit dans un circuit dans l'Ouest. 😉
Pour les petites villes (genre Page etc...), pas de déception puisque je ne m'attends pas à y voir des trucs à visiter. C'est leur environnement qui est idéal!
A venir les visites de Death Valley, Sequoia, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Crater Lake, Lava Beds, les Redwoods et San Francisco. Cela va peut être changer la donne mais, n'en doutons pas, dans les coups de cœur 😛
Les coins qui ne m'attirent à priori pas trop mais que je n'ai pas visités: la côte Pacifique entre LA et SF. Rien de franchement dépaysant à mon humble avis. Les vignobles de Californie, on a ça en France 😉. La ville fantôme de Bodie ne m'attire pas particulièrement non plus.

c'est bien, mais passe a Page avant Bryce car tu reviens sur tespas et les distances sont tres grandes.
sur la route de Page arrete toi a Horseshoes bend ça prends peux de temps c'est un superbe endroit, qui vaut le detour.
perzso je ne resterais qu'une ou deux nuits a Las Vegas, selon les heures d'arrivee.
en partant le matin, tu peux traverser death valley et trouver un motel pres de mamouth lake
si peu de temps evite sequoia qui est super mais tu as aussi des sequo geants a Yosemite;
remonte sur mono lake sur ta route ça vaut le coup.

After that, we’re heading to Sherbrooke to visit our daughter, who’s studying at the university there. We’ll spend 3 days with her, and then, since she has a break that week, we’re taking her along for 3 days in Quebec City.
We’ve planned to visit Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans.
I’d love to hear what route you’d recommend for the drive from Sherbrooke to Quebec City—we’ll have the whole day to take it easy.

Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Just a little post that might interest some of you:
Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
