Hikes: What a Disappointment!

Hi there, I wanted to share my huge disappointment after my trip to Madeira. The island is known for its hikes, so I was really interested in checking them out. Unfortunately, in 2026, the freedom associated with mountain trails was heavily restricted. The most beautiful hikes are now paid and require mandatory time slots for entry—talk about planning ahead! The control is based on tickets, not time slots, which clearly shows that nature preservation wasn’t the priority behind this measure... Of course, you can find alternatives to the paid PRs, but if, like me, you value the freedom to hike, don’t go to Madeira!

I didn’t quite get this sentence:

Ticket checks are done on the tickets themselves, not on the time slots

Do you mean that as long as you have a ticket, you can show up anytime and not just at the scheduled time?

What a shame 😕 We loved Madeira so much, especially that feeling of freedom—being able to plan everything last-minute based on the weather.

Good evening! Totally agree with you! Next time, head a bit further south to La Gomera—it’s much quieter than Madeira. For hiking, it’s perfect. Some trails are breathtaking, and best of all, you don’t need to buy a ticket or stick to time slots!! You go wherever you want, and it’s free everywhere, even at the (very interesting) Garajonay National Park museum. Nature is preserved there. The population is small, and there are still few visitors (for how long?). The locals are welcoming, accommodations are nice, and the food is hearty and delicious... In a similar style, there’s also Santo Antão in Cape Verde, but the budget won’t be the same!
