J'habite Paris, d'ou mon problème : voyager c bien, débourser plus de 200 euros pour un we à Bruxelles ou Amsterdam (ou 300 euros pour Londres même) c moins bien !
Je sais, pour en avoir discuté avec plusieurs personnes et l'avoir régulierement constaté par moi même, que si le prix du transport est généralement attractif (le prix d'un billet de train pour alller en Angleterre, en Allemagne, ou meme encore à l'autre bout de l'Europe comme la Roumanie ou de l'autre cote de l'Atlantique, est souvent dérisoire), le logement sur place incite bien souvent a ne pas rester plus de 2 ou 3 jours (des villes comme londres, paris ou new york atteignant meme les limites du supportable).
C pourquoi je pensais a la creation d'une sorte de plateforme interetudiante (ou pas qu'etudiants d'ailleurs) ou chacun mettrait a disposition son appart, un bout de sa chambre, un sac de couchage, a tout voyageur qui l'aurait contacte ; en echange d'une petite participation de 3 euros par jour, ou d'un pot de confiture, d'un jambon serrano... et bien sur d'une invitation dans le pays d'origine !
Qu'on ne hurle pas tout de suite a l'utopie irrealisable ! Les conditions pour la réalisation de ce genre de projet sont :
1_ si un maximum de gens est au courant, ca fait un maximum de nouveaux lieux a decouvrir.
2_ un lieu unique pour se retrouver et mettre a disposition les differentes adresses.
3_ des gens de plusieurs nationalites differentes (de toute l'europe et d'amérique) ; ce qui induit aussi qu'il faudrait traduire ce genre de projet en plusieurs langues, afin de le rendre accessible à tous.
4_ un esprit "voyageur" qui ne s'encombre pas a l'idee de devoir dormir sur un sol dur et non pas dans une chambre d'hotel ; le respect de l'hote (dans les 2 sens : celui qui recoit et celui qui est recu).
Voila, voila... Je suis tout bouillant d'attendre vos réponses, propositions, contre propositions... et meme les "eh cretin ! mais ca existe deja sur voyagegenialetgratuit.net" !

Je t'explique ma situation: Je suis née en France mais habite à Montréal depuis une bonne dizaine d'années. Tout cela me facilite donc un peu la tâche pour voyager: j'ai ma carte européenne mais plus important que tout: des contacts en Europe!!! À vrai dire, sans l'hospitalité de ma famille (en Dordogne et en région parisienne), je ne pense pas avoir pu voyager avec aussi peu d'argent!

Servas est une asso internationale (dont je ne fais pas partie mais grace a laquelle ma mere a voyage dans les pays de l'Est et l'Espagne) qui propose des echanges entre voyageurs. En gros, tu es heberge pendant 2 jours chez un membre de Servas, qui te fera decouvrir son pays, sa culture, etc...
Mais si tu proposes une plateforme similaire, rapide, simple et efficace, c'est une bonne idee.

Salut! Je suis super content d'être tombé sur ton message, et que tu sois tout à fait d'accord avec moi!
La comparaison avec le co-voiturage me semble assez bonne... quoique, à vrai dire, je n'ai jamais reellement pratiqué ce genre d'activité. Je pense cependant qu'il y a une différence : tu te "co-déplaces" sûrement avec une personne que tu connais déjà, alors que dans ce que je proposais, tu ne sais pas vraiment sur qui tu vas tomber (pour le meilleur... ou pour le pire ?).
G vu sur le site qu'il y avait des propositions qui ressemblaient à ce que j'évoquais : les échanges d'appartement. Mais j'en ai discuté avec les gens autour de moi, et 2 choses me semblent ressortir :
1) prêter sa piaule, même toute merdique, à qq'un d'autre, à l'heure où le spectre criminaliste et terroriste recouvre le monde de ses noires ailes, c pas vraiment dans l'air du temps : les gens préfèrent être là pour "surveiller"... Triste à dire 🙁, mais :
2) cela oblige les 2 personnes à se rencontrer, et donc à passer du temps ensemble 🙂. De mauvaises raisons peuvent donc avoir une fin heureuse.
Par ailleurs, le problème d'un site francophone comme celui ci... c justement qu'il n'est fréquenté que par des francophones... Non pas que ce soit désagréable, mais ça réduit singulièrement le champ des possibilités.
D'où le message qui proposait d'aller voir www.servas-france.org. Ca a l'air pas mal comme entreprise... en fait ça correspond assez bien à mon idée, ou plutôt mon idée correspond assez bien à ce qu'ils proposent (les trémolos pacifisto-rencontre-des-peuples-vive-le-monde-et-les-gens-in-ze-bloublou-sky en moins...)... Il faudrait creuser ce genre de truc... A voir...

Merci pour ton message, je suis allé voir le site de servas... plutôt intéressant! En fait cela correspond assez exactement à ce que j'avais en tête (ou plutôt : ce à quoi je pensais correspond assez bien à ce qui est proposé), ça en serait même l'aboutissement idéal.
Pourtant, il y a un hic (tout petit hic, au vu des propositions qui sont offertes) : g été un peu refroidi par l'aspect un peu rigide de l'organisation : liste ultraconfidentielle, lourdes procédures, droit de participer qu'au bout de 37 mois... Mais ce genre de remarques, c mon côté jeune con... si ta mère utilise ce système, c que ça doit mieux marcher comme ça, et que certaines données m'échappent.
Alors, voyons ceci: le co-voiturage (en premier, tu devrais essayer dès que t'en as l'occasion!) c au fond accepter de faire un bout de chemin (ah! quel beau "jeu de mot") avec de parfaits étrangers. Mais attention: la sécurité est garantie par la compagnie de covoiturage. ex: minimum de 3 par auto, le conducteur conduit sans accident grave depuis un bon 2-3 ans, etc. Tout cela mis de côté et formalités remplises, on peut s'embarquer pour le trajet et faire des rencontres très plaisantes...ou très bizarres, mais ça n'a pas été mon k.
serbas: je trouve qu'il y a trop de conditions à remplir, ça m'a découragé. Et puis mon idée était un peu différente: les gens ne veulent pas être obligés de jouer au guide touristique. Si ça clique avec l'invité, pas de problème allez-y, mais qu'on ne les y oblige pas. Aussi: je ne crois pas que les gens aimeraient qu'un inconnu reste dans leur appart sans surveillance. Enfin, voici comment je vois les choses, dis-moi ton opinion par la suite: on ne remet pas de double de clès de chez nous à "l'invité". Ce dernier doit se présenter chez nous (pas besoin d'aller le chercher à l'aéroport) entre 5-8pm par exemple. Si un retard important semble se présenter, en informer l'hôte. Le matin, si l'hôte travaille, l'invité peut partir et faire son ptit tour de la ville ou qu'importe ce qu'était ses plans. Il faudra par contre attendre le retour de l'hôte pour accéder à l'appart. en gros, ce serait le minimum d'effort pour l'hote pour le minimum de tchin-tchin$$ pour l'invité. Heu, j'espère que c + clair. Disons qu'ainsi, + de gens participeraient.
Enfin bref, si tu viens dans le coin, moi ça me dérangera pas de "jouer" au guide de temps en temps ;) et toi? de quelle région tu es?
Pour reparler du co-voiturage, ce n'est apparemment pas comme je le pensais : ça a l'air plutôt bien organisé, avec une société qui gère et centralise tout, non ? Mais à vrai dire, c vrai que je ne pense pas que ce soit aussi développé en france, où alors slt ds les grandes villes, ds des cas très spéciaux... Le genre de truc dont les infos parlent chaque fois qu'il y a une grève des transports en commun, mais que personne n'a jamais vu mis en application, exceptés les rares promoteurs du genre. Now, after seeing and reading a bit everywhere, and with the first quotes for a 6/7-day safari, I’m shocked by the prices (like $2,250) for places like Maasai Mara, where entry alone costs $200 per person per day, plus fees for the driver and vehicle.
So if you have any recent great tips or contacts to share to help me out, I’d really appreciate it—because despite the costs, we’d still love to go, while keeping things reasonable.
The most plausible solution is probably renting a vehicle with a driver-guide.

Three years after exploring northern Argentina and Chile, my two travel buddies and I want to discover the southern part of these two countries.
We’re traveling on a budget, backpacker-style, favoring public transport and modest accommodations, but we don’t hesitate to splurge a little when it’s worth it.
The classic spots that have been fueling our dreams: Bariloche, the lakes, Chiloé, El Chaltén, Torres del Paine, Perito Moreno, El Calafate, Fitz Roy, Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego, and wrapping up in Valparaíso.
We’ll take a round-trip flight to Santiago, then I’m thinking of a one-way flight from Santiago to Punta Arenas. From there, we’ll explore and do several day hikes in the south, including Ushuaia and, if possible, Tierra del Fuego.
Then we’ll head back north by bus to Bariloche and the lakes, followed by Chiloé, then a bus to Santiago and Valparaíso.
Based on your experience, could you help me figure out the best way to structure this trip and maybe suggest some ideas?

We’re a young couple planning to travel to South Africa after spending about three weeks in Namibia. We’ll arrive in Cape Town around mid-December, with no fixed travel duration (though our budget will eventually set a limit).
After browsing through the forum, we’ve realized the country is packed with incredible spots, which makes choosing an itinerary tough. We’re looking for stunning landscapes, hikes, and so on. So, we’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences.
When we arrive in Cape Town, we’d like to settle in and take it easy until New Year’s, exploring at a relaxed pace. We know this period coincides with South African holidays—does that make finding accommodations (availability/prices) more difficult? Do you think it’s possible to stay in a nice place for about 15 days without aiming for the most upscale neighborhoods? Maybe somewhere a bit outside Cape Town, like Fish Hoek, and just visit the city occasionally.
After that, we’ll have plenty of time (about 2 to 2.5 months) to explore the country. We’d like to take our time. In your opinion, is it better to focus on the Cape Town region, or is it reasonable to consider more distant areas like the Drakensberg or Blyde River Canyon? Can everything be done by car if we take our time, or are domestic flights sometimes more practical?
Budget-wise, how much do car rentals cost? For accommodations, we usually look at Airbnb—are they affordable in South Africa? What’s the average nightly rate outside the biggest cities? Are there other platforms you’d recommend for saving on lodging?
Finally, regarding safety, are there any regions to avoid besides Johannesburg?
We know this is a lot of questions, but we’re still in the early planning stages!

After exploring southern Peru in 2024 with your help, we’d love to head north next. There’ll be 5 or 6 of us:
1. Arrive in Lima in the evening.
2. Visit Lima and take a flight at 6:35 PM to Tarapoto.
3, 4, 5. Spend a few days there to trek in a reserve (Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve) or somewhere else.
6. From Tarapoto to Chachapoyas—either by overnight bus, daytime bus, or private car.
7. In Chachapoyas: Gocta Waterfall, Sonche Canyon, and walk back to town.
8. Head to Kuelap citadel, Revash, and arrive in Leymebamba.
9. Leymebamba museum, then route to Cajamarca.
10. Cajamarca hot springs, overnight bus to Trujillo or Chiclayo—or do both.
11, 12, 13. Visit and explore the area.
14. Overnight bus back to Lima.
15. Lima.
16. Depart at 8 PM for France.

I’m planning a 10-day trip to Slovenia in May (9–19 May) and starting to look at accommodations. Unfortunately, I’m only seeing relatively expensive options—nothing under 50 €, and usually around 100–150 €. Traveling solo, that could quickly blow my budget. And 30 € for a bed in a 10-person dorm at a youth hostel feels like a rip-off...

My planned route: Senegal → Gambia → Sierra Leone/Liberia (if logistics work out) → Côte d'Ivoire → Ghana → Togo → Benin → Cameroon → Gabon → Kenya (Masai Mara) → Uganda (Bwindi gorillas) → Rwanda → Tanzania (Kili + Serengeti + Zanzibar) → Mozambique → Malawi → Zambia (Victoria Falls) → Botswana → Namibia → South Africa (Cape Town). Madagascar as a bonus if timing/budget allows from Mozambique.
I’m not a backpacking newbie—I’ve done several trips in Europe and I’m familiar with the lifestyle, hostels, local transport, etc. But Africa is my first big adventure on this continent, and I’ve got some very concrete questions I’d love feedback on from people who’ve been there.
🎭 My big dilemma: flexibility vs. pre-organized work
What matters most to me is NOT rushing through. If I feel good somewhere, I’ll stay longer. If a region doesn’t click, I’ll cut it short. That seems totally incompatible with having pre-booked work or volunteer gigs, yet I need that income to stretch my budget.
I’m torn between two approaches:
Option A: The mixed rhythm: 3-4 weeks of volunteering in a country (free accommodation, full immersion), then 1-2 countries in classic backpacker "vacation" mode, then another mission somewhere, etc. This gives a breathing rhythm and avoids burnout from non-stop volunteering.
Option B: The continuous flow: finding gigs as I go, from the previous country, contacting hosts 2-3 weeks in advance with a flexible date range. Keeping maximum spontaneity but never arriving anywhere without a safety net.
Have you tried either? What actually works on the ground in Africa?
🌍 What I’m really looking for in this trip
Not just the classic tourist spots. I want to see the country as it is—eating at local joints, taking local transport (bush taxis, minibuses, sept-places), staying with locals when possible. The big reserves and safaris are part of the plan (Masai Mara, Serengeti, Okavango), but just as much as hanging out in a residential neighborhood in Dakar, understanding how people really live.
Volunteering or work interests me for that reason too (not just for free lodging, but because it’s the deepest way to dive into a country). Working at a school in Ghana, a lodge in Kenya, a permaculture farm in Mozambique—I see it as an immersion that classic tourism can’t offer.
