Which base(s) to choose in Cyprus?

Hello

It’s decided—next summer, it’s Cyprus! A region we don’t know yet, with nature, culture, beach time, and diving the Zenobia 😎 We’re thinking of a 2-week trip.

After flipping through the LP guide, I’m still unsure about the best bases—I can’t quite picture the distances...

Option 1: Stay near Larnaca for 1 week and Paphos for the other. But from Larnaca, Cape Greco is doable. Wouldn’t it be better to stay near Cape Greco (Protaras?) instead? What about getting to Lefkara? Same from Paphos—easy to explore as far as Kourion.

Option 2: A single, more central base somewhere between Limassol and Larnaca.

Thanks for your tips and great deals 😉

Great idea. I don’t think I’ll answer all the questions, but maybe I can share a few thoughts. A recap of our much shorter trip can be found here. The distances are short (time-wise) because the major cities are connected by highways, but they get longer once you take smaller roads. In the center of the island, you’ve got to love winding roads... but they’re in good condition—just watch out for all the loose rocks. I think it’s important to pick the right season because temperatures rise quickly. Obviously, try to avoid the summer months if possible. Option 3: consider more than two stops if you’re driving. No comments on the beaches (we’re too spoiled here!) or diving (not recommended for my ears). There are plenty of stunning historical and religious sites, though not all are worth the detour. The variety of landscapes is lovely, and it’s great being able to chat in English with the welcoming locals. The Greco-Oriental cuisine and delicious pastries are a highlight. In short, we really loved the places we discovered in a whirlwind visit. Too bad you can’t drive a rental car into the northern part of the island, because I think that area is well worth a visit. Happy planning and have an amazing trip

Ouch, you’re not making this any easier for me 😉.

Back in 2014, I spent about 10 nights in Cyprus with a car: 4 nights in Larnaca, 3 nights in Paphos, and 3 nights in Nicosia. From Larnaca, I visited Cape Greco, Ayia Napa, and took a day trip to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (Famagusta, Salamis, St. Barnabas). On the way to Paphos, I stopped everywhere along the coast. After two full days in Paphos, I drove through the Troodos Mountains and Kykkos Monastery to get to Nicosia. On the day I returned to Larnaca Airport, I passed through the Troodos again—there are some stunning villages.

I think just two accommodations isn’t enough because the mountains, villages, and monasteries in the center are worth seeing, and it’s easier to visit them when Nicosia is part of the itinerary. Also, Nicosia often gets overlooked, but the old center is really charming, and crossing into North Nicosia is quite interesting.
