Which fjord to visit in New Zealand?

We’re crossing New Zealand next April and we’re wondering which to choose between exploring Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound. The first is more well-known, famous, and popular, a UNESCO natural heritage site, while the second can be just as spectacular—bigger, harder to access, and less touristy. Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi Dominique Louis,

While we loved Doubtful Sound, Milford Sound left us with a bad impression.

The first is more intimate, wilder, quieter, and even more mysterious. And yet, it rained part of the day.

The second is much more touristy, much more crowded, noisy, with packed parking lots, loads of tour buses, and—above all—the constant, unbearable buzz of tourist planes and helicopters flying over the fjord. That said, the access road through the Homer Tunnel is really beautiful and spectacular.

Doubtful Sound was one of our absolute highlights in New Zealand.

Thanks. That’s clear and confirms our choice.
