Hi fellow bike-packers, so I’m heading out solo by bike this spring, like I do every year—around 1,500 to 2,000 km in total. This time I want to explore the south of France. I’ll start by meeting up with a buddy in Ariège, and after that the road’s wide open toward the east, aiming for Drôme. If anyone has route ideas—especially quiet backroads, places I can wild-camp pretty much anywhere, and climbs that aren’t too steep—I’m all ears! Thanks, and see you around here or on the road. Take care.

Head down via the Via Rhona and then follow the coast—either to the left or to the right along the Côte Bleue, which is really nice. Marseille is easy to cross on Saturday or Sunday mornings if you leave early: take the Corniche, then the Gineste road. From Cassis, the Route des Crêtes is stunning, though there’s a short climb. Follow the coast to Sanary, where there’s a small bike path, then take the bike path on the left at Six-Fours. Toulon is super easy to cross at any time of day thanks to the bike paths, and it continues all the way to Nice with a mix of mostly bike paths and roads. The coastal road between Nice and Monaco is gorgeous. I personally go around Monaco a bit since it’s tricky, but after that, there’s a beautiful bike path between Ospedaletti and San Lorenzo al Mare—I don’t know the route beyond that. Have a great trip!

Hi there, I’m not a cyclist, but going through Marseille, Toulon, and Nice before entering Italy to reach Drôme from Ariège might be scenic, but it’s definitely not the shortest, easiest, or most peaceful route! If you're looking for the easiest option from Ariège (if I understood correctly?), head toward Narbonne and follow the coast to Aigues-Mortes (via Agde, Sète), then Tarascon. After that, take the ViaRhôna, which follows the Rhône. Though I’m not sure where in Drôme you’re headed, so where to leave the ViaRhôna? Somewhere between Pierrelatte and Valence... The ViaRhôna is about as peaceful and easy as it gets! !

Hi Jean-Luc,

It's tricky to suggest an itinerary without more details about what you're looking for. Personally, I've cycled several times between Ariège and Ardèche, camping along the way, but I avoided the coast. If that sounds like what you're after, I can share my routes with you.
