Hi, I’m looking for info on doing a solo bike trip from Chelyabinsk to northern China via Omsk. What’s the best time of year to go? Can I do it staying only in hotels and restaurants—without having to haul a tent, stove, etc.? Also, is there a border crossing point in northern China, because I can’t find anything on Google Maps? What’s the road condition like? Thanks
Hi Eric, as far as I know, there’s no border crossing in the Altai between Russia and China, so you’ll have to go all the way to Chita (2,700 km from Chelyabinsk) and cross the border at Zabaikalsk—or even farther.
Forget Google Maps in Russia—use Yandex Maps instead. Example: Chelyabinsk - Omsk https://yandex.com/maps/?l=stv%2Csta&ll=63.984141%2C55.641249&mode=routes&rtext=55.159902%2C61.402554~54.989347%2C73.368221&rtt=auto&ruri=ymapsbm1%3A%2F%2Fgeo%3Fdata%3DCgg1MzE1OTUyNxIg0KDQvtGB0YHQuNGPLCDQp9C10LvRj9Cx0LjQvdGB0LoiCg04nHVCFb2jXEI%2C~ymapsbm1%3A%2F%2Fgeo%3Fdata%3DCgg1MzExNzk4MhIW0KDQvtGB0YHQuNGPLCDQntC80YHQuiIKDYe8kkIVF_VbQg%2C%2C&z=7.35 There are quite a few images to check the condition of the main roads.
I quickly looked at hotels between the two cities, for example—there are some, but you’ll need to plan your trip carefully (to see if they’re even open). Same for cafés—there seem to be quite a few along the main route. I don’t know if you’ve been to Russia before, but I’d advise not underestimating the distances 😉
