Hi🙂 there/bom dia! Louise,

Congrats on your Porto project!

I looove fado, though I’m no expert. As you probably know, Lisbon, its birthplace, offers more opportunities to listen to it than Porto. I asked your question to the Porto Tourist Office, and they were quite stumped. Since there weren’t any big names performing in the city during our visit (which I highly recommend you check, for example on the Fnac Porto or Casa da Música websites), we hesitantly settled for the Casa da Guitarra: meh. The audience was almost exclusively tourists... But maybe we just had bad luck with that night’s performance? Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for "good" fado. Another option—though it might complicate your search—would be to find local fado circles, which organize sessions or competitions. That’s definitely the most "local flavor" experience.

Hope this helps, and I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experience on this thread when you get back!

Bom viagem!

Hi there! Fado is a must in Portuguese culture, and you can definitely listen to it in Porto. Keep in mind that fado is traditionally enjoyed during a meal, which I highly recommend. There are alternatives with short performances—often around a few dozen minutes—usually paired with a small glass of Porto, but these are often tourist traps.

The best way is to experience it the proper way by booking a table at Taberna Real do Fado, for example. Located in the city center and only open in the evening (starting at 8 PM, as it should be), you’ll enjoy a full dinner from appetizers to dessert for 40 € per person, with fado performances between courses (which is the tradition). There’s a small extra charge for some drinks, but it’s still very affordable. The food and service are excellent, and the artists deliver a deeply emotional show.

For more tips and info, I recommend checking out Brefporto.com, where you’ll find everything you need to be more than just a tourist! Enjoy your stay in Porto! 😊
