The Coast

Côte des Squelettes, Namibie
Côte des Squelettes, Namibie

Namibia has over 1,500 km of coastline, which is not particularly hospitable. The coast is part of the Namib Desert, with only a few main towns built by German colonisers at the end of the 19th century, most of which have retained a very specific architecture.

For travellers, this part of the country is well worth a visit, with natural sites like Cape Cross (and its seals), the Brandberg massif (for hiking), and above all the Namib-Naukluft National Park, internationally renowned for the Sesriem Canyon and the orange dunes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, which are the country’s top tourist attraction.

This vast region, centred on a high plateau over 2,000 m above sea level, is home to the capital, Windhoek, and beyond it the expansive Kalahari Desert. Sparsely populated outside the capital, it’s a land of adventure and discovery, with many points of interest, chief among them the Etosha National Park and its hundreds of species of African wildlife.
