Happiness Settles in the Heart of the Maasai Mara

Isabelle, Thanks for going the whole way and appreciating the photographer’s work and my prose, which had been "in the pipeline" for a while. I hope the epidemic will be over and you’ll be able to visit the Masai Mara next November. Maybe you’ll run into Régis there—he seems to be a die-hard fan of the area and has planned a trip around the same time? As for me, I’m hooked on Ethiopia or Southern Africa, and this detour to Kenya—which I’d crossed off my list for ages due to mass tourism and sky-high prices—was really down to Yolande wanting to do a wildlife photography internship with a "specialist." Of course, I don’t regret it one bit—quite the opposite, since what we experienced was extraordinary! Best regards and happy trip planning. Jacky.

Hello Jean-François,

Thank you for your kind comments. Being alone in the middle of the Masai Mara with an exceptional photographer and an outstanding guide isn’t something every visitor to this reserve gets to experience, and for me at least, it was the necessary condition for returning to this country. Of course, when you’re alone, it’s easy to decide where to go and thus avoid the crowds as much as possible—just as I wanted. It was even easier for the “artists” who were allowed to leave the tracks, though occasionally some bold 4x4s would sneak into their wake, even if they all (or almost all) denied it. If there had only been one vehicle, I don’t think my stay would have been as rich. While I love contemplating and wandering, I also enjoy moving around, and photographers can be very static and always take priority over the average visitor. I understand, like you, that devoting all your time to a single activity isn’t always bearable—I share the same mindset. Last year, we spent about two weeks in Zambia with a couple of friends—half the time with an agency, half on our own. While I was thrilled by the uniqueness of our stay in Kenya, I preferred Luangwa for its richness and tranquility.

Best regards, Jacky.

Good evening, fellow travelers,

Thank you for this exchange, for the words and images you’ve devoted time and passion to. What were you trying to tell us with them? That nature, wild as it may be, is as beautiful as it is dangerous. That it deserves both our respect and our admiration. Great idea to immerse yourself in it—as long as you’re not too bothered!

I share this opinion and Max’s about the formula. As for the destination, Ethiopia could be next, and Southern Africa, of course, is still on the list ;). Why not Sri Lanka? There are critters there. Until we’re out of lockdown, I’m dreaming of the Americas. It still feels so far away, the day we’ll have wings again!

Positive thoughts to you both and to everyone else

Hello Muriel,

Thanks for reading through this long, illustrated story and for enjoying it. Following up on this trip to the Masai Mara, we have three or four topics in mind: - An 8-day trek in the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia in 2009, at the start of a six-week trip (the text isn’t quite finished, and the photos were taken by a beginner with a small Sony, so they’re pretty average). - Zambia in 2019, but the text is a bit long for a two-week trip (I’m not great at summarizing)—28 pages and photos that, in my opinion, are prettier than the ones from Kenya because the student has improved. - South Africa in 2018 (6 weeks), where everything is still left to do, but we’re more excited about it because I could try to present it as a travel journal, which would be more interesting for lovers of the country and especially for potential travelers.

We’re working on it, but we’re leaning toward the last one! Jacky.

Well, Jacky, I vote—if I get a say—for Zambia. We’ll gladly read your lengthy prose, just as it should be, while treating our eyes (and everything that comes with them) to the skillfully taken photos by Yolande.

Off to the races!

Take care of yourselves!

Good evening Bernard,

I just looked at your great shots of the animals in Katavi on your favorite site. But what a shame there’s no story to go with this safari. Maybe we’ll read about your adventures on VF soon.

I’m all for Zambia, but I wouldn’t say no to a bit of Ethiopia too😉.

Looking forward to reading from you

Hi Bernard,

I just saw your Marabout gallery—absolutely wonderful! What beautiful photos. You really make them shine. It’s true they’re not the ones with the most "striking faces," but the shots are superb. You can feel the wait for the perfect moment and the choice of beautiful light. Thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to see everything. Actually, it was Jacky who was a regular on the travel forum, and I barely went on it. I realize I missed a whole bunch of gems. So, I’ve got work to do—this lockdown needs to last much longer. Just kidding. Take care. Best, Yolande

PS. I don’t know why I can’t add emojis from my desktop computer!!! Could someone help me out? I think it’s some kind of "Java thing"—a dance issue, maybe? Sorry, I laugh every time my text isn’t registered when it includes them.

Good evening Eric,

I think we forgot to thank you—well, now we have! We’ll wait for Sylvie to return from Samburu before diving into the fantastic Luangwa River valley: the text is ready with a few personal notes since we were with a couple of friends, and the photos are too—but there are so many!!!! For Ethiopia, we’ll have to wait because I abandoned my notes along the way. I need to complete the story with an illegible notebook and a failing memory. As for the photos, they won’t be great and will be very limited because it’s hard to walk in the footsteps of Ethiopians (even calmly, they’re relentless), enjoy the splendor of the landscapes, take a few notes to prepare the text, and finally press the shutter on a very simple camera.

Best regards and have a good end to your lockdown. Jacky.

Good evening Éric

I just looked at your great animal photos from Katavi on your favorite site. But what a shame there’s no story to go with this safari. Maybe we’ll read about your adventures on VF soon.

Thanks for your kind words. We had made a travel journal about our 2011 and 2014 trips on Nundafoto, a site that’s now gone. I don’t have Jacky’s memory or well-kept notes to redo it. Now, I’ve tried to put the useful info on the Katavi park page and the Katavi photos are annotated. Write a travel journal on VF? Why not, but I still have to finish the Ethiopia bird album first... I think you’ve been to Katavi, right? So, a journal or a short trip report?

Good evening Yolande,

Thanks for your generous feedback. The photos aren’t all mine—the best ones, the best-framed, the best-composed, are usually by my partner. I’m more of a brutal close-up kind of guy... Like you, I’m hoping for a very, very long lockdown so I can finish my part of safari-tanzanie and even tweak it a little while Catherine works on updating our galleries... Yadutafunpeu... I’m joking, right?

Best to everyone and kisses to the others

BL

PS: We can do without emojis :=) !

Hi Bernard,

Creating a travel journal on VF? Why not, but I still have my Ethiopian bird album to finish... I think you’ve been to Katavi, right? So, a journal or a short trip report?

You’re mistaken. I haven’t been to Katavi, even though it’s on my list. So, a journal about Katavi would be premature for me—but not for you... because "all it takes" is a powerful recollection, which you’re perfectly capable of, to gather your memories around your beautiful photos. Maybe I’ll do the same for Ruaha, Selous, and Zanzibar. See you,

Hello Catherine and Bernard,

With the quality of your photos and your partner’s knowledge in this field, we’re eagerly waiting for the album dedicated to Ethiopian birds. Which regions did you visit? If it’s published, we’ll reserve a copy with autographs and all the trimmings. Beyond its many attractions, this country has an exceptional birdlife with a good number of endemic species. I think out of all the countries I’ve been lucky enough to glimpse, Ethiopia is where birds are the easiest to observe. Given the unusual—and sometimes unbearable—human presence, they’re not too skittish, even for a group of ornithologists eager for unique shots. Plus, the locals only take chickens from the avian fauna, and sometimes a few guinea fowl!

I think the lockdown is ending too soon for you to complete your work—maybe there’ll be a second one (our "protectors" are already talking about it)?

After heavy rains, the sun has returned, so I’m going to hop on my bike and rediscover the roads of our beautiful Cévennes.

Best regards, Jacky.

PS: Rereading your message, I realize the chief photographer of the team is your partner, so I’ll tone down the very beginning of my first sentence to share the credit with what follows.

Hello to this wonderful community that has followed us, and a big thank you. But I must tell you that happiness is no longer here, as Jacky took flight, likely above the plains of the Masai Mara, one year ago on 5/6/2024. I don’t have the heart to travel anymore, nor the talent or desire to continue our stories—Zambia and others. I’ll keep following your adventures, just a little later. It’s always been a pleasure reading your comments and your often-amusing photographic jousts. Warm regards, Yolande

Hello Yolande,

What sad news you’re sharing with us..... I understand how your desire to travel may have faded with Jacky’s passing. You must hold so many beautiful memories in your heart, especially those from your safaris.

I wish you lots of strength to keep moving forward.
