Choosing between Sumatra and Sulawesi

Hi there, We’re heading out for 3 weeks from September 20th to October 12th, and we’re torn between Sumatra and Sulawesi. Are the landscapes similar, or is one less touristy? What about the cost of living, trekking, typical small villages, and beaches? We’re a bit lost—any info or suggestions would be super welcome!

Hi Seb, It’s tough to choose between these two great Indonesian islands. Having traveled to each several times, I’ve noticed some similarities: regions with strong cultures and stunning villages and landscapes (Batak country and Minang country in Sumatra, Toraja country in Sulawesi), often welcoming locals, and a roughly similar cost of living. Sulawesi is probably a bit more touristy than Sumatra, though at the time you’re going, you won’t be bothered by too many tourists. In Sumatra, you’ll find more lush nature, with large parks like Gunung Leuser National Park, where you can see orangutans and do less crowded treks, including volcano climbs.

For diving or snorkeling, Bunaken and the Togian Islands in Sulawesi are among the most beautiful sites in Asia—if not the world. Weh Island in northern Sumatra is also pretty great. As for beaches, both islands have some lovely, uncrowded spots.

So, it’s a tough choice—I think in either case, you won’t be disappointed.

If you'd like, I’ve put together a sort of overview of what there is to do in Sulawesi, with quite a few tips. Unfortunately, I haven’t done one for Sumatra yet—that’ll be my next destination along with the Moluccas. Either way, you won’t be disappointed since both are stunning destinations. The only thing to keep in mind is that with just 3 weeks, you won’t be able to cover these islands in one go. For Sulawesi, I’d recommend focusing on either the north or the south to really enjoy it. Hi, I can’t compare the two, but I’ve visited Sumatra and if it helps, I’ve detailed our trip in some posts—maybe that’ll help you decide. I saw someone else shared Sulawesi with you too! :) https://worldseenbymathilde.blogspot.com/2024/10/bukittinggi-1er-stop-de-litineraire-de.html
