Yet Another Travel Journal in this (Too) Familiar Rajasthan, But with Family and Kids

Yes, I agree with Kate Pagal—there are a lot of silent readers. Often, my travel journals get over fifty views per post, and a comment on the best days (always the same people, thanks to them—without them, I think this forum would be dead 😅).

There are the lurkers/consumers, those who are afraid to bother, and those who just don’t know what to say. But just so you know, thanks to you, I’ll be in Jawai Bandh in two months—see, you’re helpful! 😄

For me, the point of a travel journal is to extend the trip, to dive back into those happy memories, and to print it out in the end so my husband can read them to me when I’ve lost my marbles 😄

But maybe you should make it less detailed to lighten your "load"?

Looking forward to reading the rest, anyway! 😊

Thanks Kate,

You’re the number one drama queen, the student has surpassed the master!

Not at all. First, I’m no one’s student, and my response wasn’t calculated at all. I didn’t write it to stir things up or feed my ego. I simply replied to Marien and Calaf, who were the first to react to the dormancy of this journal, which had ended up on standby in my mind. Without their comments, I might’ve even forgotten about it one day... You don’t really think I’ve been waiting all this time for someone to finally chime in so people would beg me to continue? I’ve got other things to do...

What I’m saying is true and sincere: I didn’t even have much time to start such a journal when I first decided to write it. Time caught up with me, and the current sluggishness of VF (which isn’t dramatization but a real observation I lament a bit out of nostalgia) makes me more inclined to use the few minutes I can scrape together in a week for more essential things.

Also, consider that this trip happened just over a year and a half ago, and since then, we’ve already done four other trips, all just as rich, with two more in the works for soon. On one hand, the Rajasthan trip is fading into the past, and on the other, I sometimes feel like finishing it... well, when I think about it, which is less and less often.

I don’t think people are really frustrated by the interruption of this journal—let’s not exaggerate. They say "oh well" and go back to their real lives, which is totally natural, or find other things to read here or elsewhere.

In any case, thanks for the encouraging message!

Yes, I completely agree with this take on travel journals and with what you’re saying in general in this post—especially that this forum would definitely be dead if a handful of us weren’t keeping it alive (for how much longer, though...).

But in the reply I just left for Kate in the meantime, I explain the reasons for this break, and it’s not about the journal’s readership but rather the lack of interaction—and, most of all, the lack of time.

But maybe you should make it less detailed to lighten your "load"?

I’d really struggle to do it any other way! Writing a very (sometimes *too*) detailed account takes more time and might put some people off, but that’s also the whole point of this journal and what would motivate me to keep going.

Thanks to you, and I’m glad I could shed some light on this place that’s almost unknown to foreign tourists—Jawai Bandh—hoping you’ll spot more leopards than we did! But even without them, the place is absolutely worth it.

On another note, I’ve been invited to a very traditional wedding in Barmer, Rajasthan, very soon. The dates, my proximity to the family, and the fact that I’m going alone this time will let me be right in the thick of it to experience the whole thing—and maybe write a special wedding journal that I could do live, which would be less demanding for me.

Hi there,

I completely agree with Solene 40, who suggests "keeping it less detailed"—less time-consuming—and maybe leaving a bit of time for us to give a quick rundown of the next trips....

Calaf, just another voice in the crowd...

That’s the real issue! I should be less selfish and slow down the travel pace to free up time to polish the journals we’re given. It wasn’t that complicated! 😛

Really great!

It’s actually the opposite that’s happening with an upcoming trip to Rajasthan and another to La Gomera.

I thought this travel journal was dead for good, even after trying to revive it since I wasn’t getting any notifications about it. And for good reason! Another VoyageForum bug meant I wasn’t receiving any notifications—on your journal, mine, or the few others I still followed... After repeatedly complaining with no response, the bug was finally fixed, and I suddenly got flooded with notifications for all the latest posts.

As for the "details," I’m with you—I prioritize them. They’re what make a travel journal feel alive instead of just a string of generic memories like "we did this, we saw that, we paid this much, and that’s it." Or worse, trying to sound intellectual—like pretentious know-it-alls—without anything that makes you want to share in the author’s so-called adventures. It’s like Indian or Thai food without spice—"No spicy, no spicy... 😉"—completely bland and nothing like the real thing.

Well, we're all someone's fool or hypocrite. Most of us have a style or habits that get annoying after a while...

I reported two bugs to VF on another thread yesterday. They're working on it, but they don’t have a technical specialist with exactly the same skills as François Boucher on hand anymore. That complicates things.

By the way, no need for notifications. Every time someone posts on a thread you’ve contributed to, you’ll see it in "My Account" on the emerald banner at the top of the page: My Followed Discussions.

See you later!

As long as you log in.... I no longer feel like logging into this forum without a compelling reason. So, it's the notifications that let me know if I have a good reason to log in. Like Pagal, I have other major interests and activities, and I don’t spend much time on VF without one (or more) good reason(s).

So tonight, if I hadn’t received the notification about a reply in this discussion, I wouldn’t have come to VF, and without that notification, I wouldn’t have known you’d written something.

Otherwise, I feel like telling you that if you don’t know how to drive, you don’t buy a car. Or if you know how to drive but aren’t familiar with all the new and advanced features of a vehicle, you don’t hit the road without basic technical knowledge. Or you hire a good driver who knows them—and a good driver is paid based on their qualifications. That’s why VF’s ersatz forum is terrible in its design, its technology, its prehistoric layout, and has never appealed to me.

But VF is dying without lively travel journals...

And since you mentioned François, I was surprised that among all the obituary messages, not one asked what happened to him. When you care about someone and miss them, don’t you wonder about their untimely death?

Online, there’s nothing but this: https://www.domainefuneraire.com/avis-de-deces/francois-boucher

Besides, searching with: "reinfo quebec facebook francois boucher". You’ll find lots of tributes on that FB page but no serious answers.

It would be fitting if this year the promise to pay homage finally materialized: https://voyageforum.com/v.f?do=post_view_flat;post=10702535;page=2;search_string=FRANCOIS%20BOUCHER;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=20;

Please note that I’m not commenting on your account—which I otherwise enjoy—but on a wasteland where weeds that shocked me are thriving.

@Marien

Regarding the "details," I’m like you—I prioritize them. They’re what make a travel journal come alive instead of just a string of generic memories describing a place by saying we did this, we saw that, we paid so much, and that’s it.

Why so much hate? Especially toward someone who shares your interests.

Those who needed to know, know.

Can you imagine that François Boucher’s loved ones have no desire for this? Especially with certified snoops lying in wait.

I know you’re the One Who Knows, the Knower. And we never stop humbly drawing inspiration from you.

Your reply indirectly—and perhaps unintentionally—confirms our fears, even if it won’t change anything about the situation. Many of us, I know, have been asking questions, because for VF members, François wasn’t just a figure—he was a prominent member of the French-speaking travel community, the one thanks to whom, in the end, we can express ourselves here, share, and relive our travels. I would’ve liked, out of respect for him, to see support for a tribute on the site rather than these unproductive and sterile skirmishes. It could’ve been avoided.

Okay, I guess I need to break the ice here, because personally, being part of that little circle of "those who know"... well, I couldn't care less 😂

Hello Pagaljavab,

I had to go back to last year—December 14th, to be exact—to find your journal again. I log into VF twice a day, and I was hoping...

"I don’t think people are really frustrated over this journal being interrupted, let’s not exaggerate..." you later wrote. Sure, that genuine humility does you credit, but may I disagree?

The adventures of your family—and others like those incredibly lively journals from Jojoone, Richard-Kate, Montagnard, Aleph, Solene, and of course our dear Marien—are like TV series; they’re addictive! We end up knowing the characters’ psychology, predicting their reactions, guessing what they’ll like or dislike... in short, you make us feel part of your group!

So, you might ask, have I made a journal myself? I confess: no! It takes a certain storytelling and photography talent that I don’t have, and I know writing a page that "holds together" takes forever. If you decide to stop, I’ll be disappointed, along with other members, but I’ll understand.

So I’m hoping... that one day, maybe, I’ll get to know the end of your journey...

But whatever you decide, a thousand thanks for sharing your Rajput family adventure and your passion for India with us.

Calaf

Well, would you believe it—just as you were writing that really touching message, my dear Calaf, what a coincidence! I was actually working on the next part! I don’t know when it’ll be ready, but I’m doing my best to finish it and post it soon. Thanks so much, anyway.

Well, good news and a brave, wise decision. Bravo! As for me, I’m still stuck... I just can’t get the writing machine going again...

Same as Calaf 🙂. I’m in wait-and-see mode for the rest of your adventures.
