Mandatory Insurance Imposed by Kenya for ETA Applications

Hello,

To read:

📋 Yes, travel insurance is now mandatory in the ETA application. Since October 6, 2026, the official Kenyan ETA portal directly includes a step to subscribe to mandatory government travel insurance for travelers required to obtain an ETA, even if you already have your own medical and repatriation insurance. This insurance adds an official extra cost of $44 plus payment fees of $8, totaling $52 on top of the ETA. The ETA application cannot be completed without paying for this insurance on the portal.

In the end, Kenya followed the Tanzanian "model".....!!

One more piece of good news.... Regards.

Well, great.

It was really worth announcing not so long ago that there would be no more visas for Kenya, while setting up an e-TA that was far from free and required just as much, if not more, detailed information than for countries where you can get a visa at the border. In short, a more than mediocre process for a very dubious advertisement.

Now they’re adding these space-age insurance policies for who knows what service, meant for everyone without distinction. If I’m not mistaken, in Tanzania, it’s only for Zanzibar, whereas Kenya imposes it on its entire territory.

Might as well announce a $70 visa and allow people to get it at the border instead of these delaying tactics.

Might as well call it a $70 visa and allow people to get it at the border instead of these delaying tactics.

Hello,

Oh, NO!!!

In mainland Tanzania, just like in Zanzibar, there’s now—since about three weeks ago, I think—a MANDATORY insurance requirement!?? (With an added complicated rule depending on whether you arrive via Zanzibar or the mainland...) The circle is complete. I completely agree with you about calling it an ETA instead of a disguised visa. And there’s no way to avoid it—it’s paid with the visa fees. No insurance, no visa...

All this after they seriously increased entry fees for reserves a year ago...!!

You said it—tourist = cash cow or US$ milking machine! Hard to imagine this won’t impact visitor numbers... eventually, the rope’s gonna snap...

Hard to imagine this won't have repercussions on attendance... sooner or later, the rope will snap...

No way! An extra 50 € for a trip that costs at least 2,000 € per person is peanuts!
