bonjour, nous rentrons juste de notre voyage de 10 jours en Oman...comblés d'émotions fortes et inoubliables car finalement nous avons voyagé en individuels et ne le regrettons pas! location 4x4 superbe et de certains hôtels par agence de Mascate (parfaite) et avec une bonne préparation on s'en sort avec bonheur: lecture sites internet et guides (gallimard, petit futé et Oman off road trouvé sur voyage forum - que je remets d'ailleurs en vente!) beaucoup de curiosité et de l'adaptation. Bien que presque néophites en conduite 4x4 ça passe. A vous de choisir en fonction de votre audace étant entendu que le plus impressionnant est le passage du jebel shams par le wadi bani Awf ("quand on a fait celui là on peut tout faire"!!!!). à votre disposition.

4° nous allons devoir faire 3 étapes en bivouac total, peux t on acheter le matos sur place (tente, duvet, réchaud, etc...) ou les loueurs peuvent ils louer aussi ce genre de matériel?
5° nous aurons aussi des étapes en camps, j aimerais savoir s il existe des différences par exemple entre le camps des 1001 nuits de le desert night camps ; en un mot avons nous le choix ou n existe t il qu un seul camp regroupant tous les touristes au meme endroit?

voila, ce qui me viens à l esprit ; en fait j ai contacté des agences pour qu elles nous organisent ce circuit en individuel, mais j arrive à des sommets et comme on a l habitude de voyager, je pense réduire la note de façon conséquente en me transformant en ma propre agence de réservation et en traitant les postes un par un, les plus lourds me paraissant être les très beaux hôtels, la location du 4x4 et le défraiement du chauffeur guide, puisque les agences prennent leur bénef dessus.
j'ai enregistré ttes les questions. Avec notre expérience je ne pourrai pas répondre à ttes mais je vais faire tt le possible! mais plus tard parce que j'ai encore la nuit d'avion d'hier à récupérer et ma soirrée sera courte!

REPONSE:
1° location 4x4: avez vous des bons plans sur place ou sur le net avant le départ?
Ns avons réservé par internet à agence Marktour à Mascate (qques bonnes appréciations ds voyage forum). Sommes très satisfaits du service: super voiture Land Cruiser Toyota dernier modèle (ns n'en demandions pas tant!!!), 20 000km, parfait état, clim très efficace (indispensable).
2° chauffeur-guide: comme nous allons nous enfoncer très loin dans le désert et sillonner pas mal de pistes, je tiens au chauffeur-guide, si possible parlant un peu français, ou du moins anglais, avez vous la encore des plans?
Le bon plan N'EXISTE PAS: emploi réservé à des citoyens omanais donc payés au tarif occidental (minimum 150$/jour), que vs passiez par agence française ou omanaise. Il faut savoir que les 3 millions d'Omanais bénéficient de très très nombreux avantages payés par le sultan Qaboos (et le pétrole!). Pour qu'ils acceptent de travailler il faut que ce soit très intéressant financièrement. En règle général ce sont les expatriés - Indiens pour la plupart, le plus souvent du Kerala - qui font tourner l'économie pendant que les Omanais "tirent les ficelles". Tout ce qui passe par les Omanais est très cher ( + cher qu'en france). Par contre les services rendus par les Indiens - sous-payés: 200€/mois environ - est très bon marché: ainsi vs pourrez manger ds les petits resto pour 1,5 RO (environ 3€); mais dans les restos des hôtels prévoir 12€ si vs n'êtes pas trop gourmands!
3° pour les vols intérieurs type mascate salalah, savez vous s il convient de réserver sur le net avant le départ ou demander à un hôtel de s en occuper sur place? Je ne sais pas

Au Carrefour de Seeb - près de l'aéroport - on trouve tente-réchaud.. mais apporter son duvet. Des agences louent aussi ce matériel.

Eviter les 1001 nuits! Avons eu charmant camp: safari desert camp où ns étions seulement 2 couples. 25km de piste, difficile à trouver mais pr y arriver ils vs donnent RV. Si besoin détails + tard.
6° pour compenser les nuits au confort spartiates, on veux s offir le nec plus ultra dans les grandes villes telles que mascate, khasab ou salalah, pour les hôtels, pourriez vous, sans tenir compte du prix, nous donner vos coups de coeur? Pas de coup de coeur parce que ns avons horreur de ces hôtels. Cependant ns avons passé 2 nuits au nord de mascate au Sawadi beach hôtel - parfait ds le genre et environnement exceptionnel presqu'île sur au bord du golfe d'Oman.
7° idem pour les resto, après des festions de bivouacs existe t il des restaurant incontournables? NON, on mange vraiment pas bien en Oman; le mieux c'est chez les Indiens pr 2€.........................
8° le budget excursions, entrées des sites, est il important? Entrée des forts 0,5 Ro /pers (3 fois rien). Le plus cher entrées pr les Tortues à ne pas rater à Ras al Jinz: 8Ro je crois. On dort au Ras al Had resort, en bord du golfe d'Oman, franchement moche mais le + proche du site (20minutes de voiture): utile puisque on va voir la ponte de nuit

Nous pensons que le chauffeur guide fait perdre 90% de l'intérêt d'un voyage en Oman: avec les bons bouquins (omann off road indispensable) et une bonne carte on fait une vraie course d'orientation, on palpite, on s'interroge, on suppute, on s'inquiète et finalement on est très satisfaits d'avoir vaincu la difficulté. En dehors des wadis ou du désert tout se fait sur d'excellentes routes - éclairées même sur des centaines de km: quand on a le pétrole on ne compte pas!!!. Je pense qu'éventuellement on peut se faire accompagner ponctuellement si on ne se sent pas pour un itinéraire (à demander peut-être sur le forum car ns n'avons pas expérimenté?).
vraiment un grand merci, vous avez répondu à tout et vos conseils nous seront précieux ; je faisais une fixation sur le guide, mais il semble que c était une idée de "blonde" ; car cela est vraiment très onéreux je pense que l on va faire l impasse ; nous partons en fin d année du 18 dècembre au 4 janvier, je ne manquerais pas de vous laisser un commentaire sur le périple.

nous voyageons toujours en individuels, surtout en Asie, depuis de longues années. Depuis les possibilités données par internet nous contactons des agences locales pour faciliter nos déplacements et parfois nos hébergements, en ayant le plaisir de nouer des contacts avec des gens des pays que nous visitons et de faire de très substancielles économies par rapport à un voyage organisé en France. Donc nous pouvons donner bons plans pour Inde (en particulier Sikkim notre voyage préféré), Vietnam, Birmanie, Cambodge, Chine...j'ajoute depuis la création de ce profil: Orissa, Laos, Jordanie, Yemen, Gujarat et maintenant Ethiopie mars 2009(circuit nord)!puis Sulawesi nov 2009... et avant (comprendre avant internet) avions voyagé seuls USA, Mexique, Guatemala, Inde centre, nord et sud, Nepal, Thailande, Sri lanka et tous les pays tour de la méditerranée (sauf Libye pr l'instant).. en espoir: Ouzbekistan..à suivre!finalement ouzbebistan remis au mois de mai 2011 ( Inch Allah)et remplacé par Oman ( toujours en individuels), toujours aussi convaincus .

Des 12 pays que nous avons visités ces quatre dernieres années, c'est un des trois favoris et le premier. Sécuritée absolue, tranquilité, qualité du réseau routier et paysages extremement variés.
Pour le guide Oman Off Road, on le trouve facilement sur place. C'est vraiment indispensable pour profiter pleinement du pays.

Dernière question: nous hésitons encore à rejoindre Nizwa à partir de Nakhl par la fameuse piste qui passe par le Wadi Bani Awf. Est ce trés difficile et dangereux? Nous sommes 2 familles avec 3 enfants chacune à bord!
Cette piste est a faire en 4x4 de preference! Elle est extremement pentue. Je l'ai faite deux fois avec mon camion, mais uniquement dans la descente . C'est a dire Nizwa / Nakl. Les locaux la pratique quotidiennement dans les deux sens. Elle est correctement entretenue. C'est un paysage exeptionnel.

After that, we’re planning to visit Gorongosa National Park before flying back to France from Beira. We’re planning a 4x4 trip from Belgium to Central Asia, passing through Georgia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
For these countries, our national insurance obviously doesn’t cover the vehicle, so we’ll need to get local insurance.
Will it be a problem if the vehicle is registered under person A and the national insurance is under person B? Both A and B will be in the vehicle, and both will be listed as drivers on the insurance.
When we get the local insurance, if we again list A and B as drivers, does the order matter? Could we get stuck at the border for this reason?

Were they All Terrain tires or more "standard" ones like all-season tires, for example?

I’m planning a trip to Iceland for next July-August, with a car and tent, and I’m wondering about booking campsites.
From your experience, is it necessary or even essential to book campsites in advance, or do you always manage to find a spot to pitch your tent?
We’ll also have the option to sleep in the car without pitching the tent.
Does that give us the flexibility to stay outside a campsite for a night here and there?

I’m looking for detailed maps of this region that include small roads and tracks.
Last year, we had a fantastic road trip in the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas using Erfahren maps, but unfortunately, they don’t cover the area we’re interested in this year.

We’re planning a 13-day family road trip in Morocco this July, with six people in a Toyota Prado 4x4 (renting in Marrakech).
We’ll alternate between bivouacking and small hotels/riads depending on the stops.
Here’s the planned route (in this order):

Our goal:
Atlas Mountains + desert + dunes + plateaus + valleys + a bit of coastline.
We’ll cover about 1,700 km in total.
We’re planning:
Bivouacking in the Chegaga/Iriki area
Flexible for the rest (booking the day before or same day)
Sand gear: traction plates, compressor, tow strap, roof rack
Questions:
Is the Zagora → Chegaga → Iriki → Foum Zguid crossing in July doable on our own (single vehicle, no guide)?
Are there any truly technical or risky sections between Chegaga and Iriki?
Does the overall itinerary seem manageable in 13 days without rushing?
Any suggestions for great bivouac spots or particularly interesting stops along this route?
The points on the route are provisional overnight stops. Some spots will include two nights in the same area.
We’re used to off-road driving, but not yet in the Moroccan desert.

We’re struggling a bit with timing and choosing activities for the part of the trip between Sesriem and Brandberg.
Day 1: Sesriem to Mirabib
Day 2: Mirabib to Swakopmund – visit Swakopmund, overnight in Swakopmund
Day 3: Sandwich Harbour – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 4: Kayaking with the seals + the living dunes – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 5: Moon Landscape, Henties Bay + Cape Cross – overnight at White Lady Lodge in Brandberg
Does this itinerary seem realistic to you? Is Cape Cross really worth the trip? If I had to choose between Cape Cross and kayaking with the seals, which would you recommend?

However, the rental agencies we’ve found prohibit driving on the tracks to Omalo (Tusheti) and/or Ushguli (Svaneti).

I’d love to visit Gonarezhou National Park—I see there are two sectors: the Mwenezi Region in the south and the area around the Runde River in the north. Should I cover both sectors or just focus on the northern region?
For the parks along the Zambezi River, is it better to visit Mana Pools on the Zimbabwe side or Lower Zambezi on the Zambia side?

I’m leaving in November for about a month with the goal of reaching Senegal via Mauritania. I’d love to share this trip with someone who wants to discover Mauritania and a bit of Senegal... and also experience life on board a 4x4 in the desert or bush, sometimes sleeping in the vehicle or in hostels/small hotels for comfort. I’m looking for a rental company (or several) that offers single-cab 4x4 pick-ups with a fitted camper cell for two people. I’m specifically after a vehicle with an indoor shower for extra comfort ;)
So, no vans—at least not from the rental companies I’ve seen so far.
While browsing the forum, I came across the Chilean rental company Holiday Rent. But do you have any recommendations for Argentine rentals?
Because, if I can’t return the vehicle in the same city as pickup, I’d prefer—and it’d likely be cheaper—to at least return it in the same country.

My trip to South Africa is starting to take shape.
However, I'm struggling to figure out the route through Kruger Park. I can't seem to find the information I need about getting around.
Coming from the south, I plan to arrive on Day 1 in the early afternoon at Malelane or Crocodile Bridge.
Do some shopping in Malelane (or Crocodile Bridge main area) and stay overnight outside the park.
Leave on Day 2 at 5 AM for the park. Explore the southern part of the park.
Stay overnight around Skukuza or Lower Sabie. (We don’t want to stay in one of the park’s big camps. We’re looking for a lodge around 200 €.
Head out on Day 3 for a self-drive safari, maybe as far as Orpen.
We’d like to stay in a private reserve on nights 4 and 5.
We’re not sure which one or how to get into a private reserve. Do we need to exit Kruger Park?
On Day 5, we’d like to leave to visit Blyde Canyon (on Day 6).

I’m finalizing my trip starting from Namibia.
When I arrive in Divundu, I’d like to head straight to the Khwai area early in the morning to one of the campsites in the Khwai Development Trust. Is the drive doable with a good 4x4 in a day?
We’ll spend 2 nights in Khwai, then 2 or maybe 3 nights in the Moremi area (Third Bridge/Xakanaxa/Mboma) before heading back to Maun to wrap up our journey.
Is that too much time to spend in each place?
We’d also like to do one or two boat excursions in the delta. Any suggestions for the best options and operators?

I’m planning to explore the western part of Madagascar from May 1st to 5th, specifically to visit the Tsingy. I’ve heard different versions about the road conditions and access to the Tsingy during this time, so I’d love to hear from people who’ve actually made this trip during this time of year.
Have you traveled from Morondava → Tsingy between May 1st and 5th?
Was the journey doable and safe?
Did you have access to the Grands Tsingy, or just the Petits Tsingy?
