Hello,

If you're leaving next week with such a precise itinerary, I wonder if there's still time to make suggestions? 😮

Since the pandas go to sleep around 10:30 AM, you’ll need to arrive early at the park or risk being disappointed. That leaves you plenty of time during the day, like visiting the Jinsha Museum, for example.

It’s entirely possible to visit the Dazu Caves as a day trip from Chongqing (a two-hour bus ride, very frequent if I remember correctly—double-check this). Staying overnight doesn’t seem necessary, so I think you might have an extra day in Chongqing, which isn’t a major highlight aside from its pollution records and the Yangtze River cruise departures.

Calling Hongyadong a "commercial street" is amusing because it’s a very vertical construction (worth a look). In its own way, it’s an interesting take on the Chinese "old streets" concept (modern pastiches of ancient buildings housing shops and restaurants for tourists), adapted to the steep layout of the city and reminiscent of stilt houses, the last of which have likely disappeared.

Have a great trip! !

Pretty slow pace. Xi'An could be done in 2 days. Lots of time in Chongqing. You might find it a bit dull. I assume you’re not listing all the places you plan to visit in Beijing because your days aren’t packed enough. And you’re missing many essential attractions like the Temple of Heaven, the Lama Temple, the hutongs around the Drum Tower, the National Museum, etc....

True, the pace is slow, but we didn’t really have much choice—for example, in Xi’an because the trains were almost full. I didn’t write down everything for Beijing. Since my friend is already there, he really wants me to meet his friends and show me around his university, go shopping, etc. Thanks for your advice—it’s not necessarily too late to change things since the hotels are booked but not paid for yet. So, it might make sense to spend less time in Chongqing.

Totally agree with Marathon on "leaving for me next week"!!! And regarding Chongqing 😉

It’s a city I struggled to "tame." I had to visit this megacity three times before I finally started to appreciate it.

But enough chit-chat—the departure is imminent, and if there’s still time to tweak things, let’s do it now:

1. From Leshan to Chongqing, then from there, go to/return to Dazu!!! Travel from Leshan to Dazu. But maybe that’s a bit complicated. Is there a direct bus from Leshan, or do you have to transfer... maybe in Rongchang on the way to Chongqing? Dazu is a bit off the main road.

A full day to enjoy the two main sites:

- Bei Shan, the North Hill, just a stone’s throw from the city. A really interesting spot and definitely less crowded.

- Baoding Shan, the Precious Summit Hill, 15 km away. A site not to be missed under any circumstances. You won’t be the only one following my advice 😛

2. Your choice of hotel(s) in Chongqing seems... a bit unusual, especially the location. I was really happy with this one:

Chongqing Greenforest Hostel (Jiaochangkou)

Especially for its location and the view (well, yeah—it’s a view!) from my room:

3. Keep your planned number of days in Chongqing and take a day trip (count on 4 hours round-trip) to Wulong. It’s... it’s... HUGE 😮. I stayed 2 nights, but once there, it’s a bit... tricky (I was going to say... "Chinese" 😛) to find your way around.

I’d happily return to Chongqing just for this view:

Wishing you not-too-awful weather 😊. For the rest, you’ll manage 😇

Okay, thanks. I’ll review the itinerary as soon as I get home. Thanks for your advice. I’ll check out the hotel you stayed at. Why is the location of mine special?
RA Ragamuffin Globetrotter ·
Why is the location of mine special?

It's "outside" the center.

I passed through the Yangjiaping district to catch a bus to Wulong and didn’t find the area particularly charming. Just a typical urban Chinese neighborhood. Not interesting unless you're into sociology.

Near the Jiaochangkou metro station, there’s the Chongqing People's Liberation Monument, which is the "real" center of Chongqing. I recommend the revolving restaurant on the top floor of the Yu Du Hotel. Go at 12:00 PM because they stop rotating it at 2:00 PM 🏴‍☠️

More photos of Chongqing and Wulong at the end of my album from my last trip to China (Shanghai + Southwest) in March-April 2014.

Hi there,

Given the time you have in Xi'an, you should definitely visit Huashan (if the weather's nice—it takes a full day), or alternatively HanYangLing (汉阳陵), which is just as underrated as the Terracotta Army is crowded.

Fairly slow pace. Xi'An could be done in 2 days. A lot of time in Chongqing. You might find the time dragging. I assume you're not listing all the places you plan to visit in Beijing since your days aren't packed enough. And you're missing many essential attractions like the Temple of Heaven, the Lama Temple, the hutongs around the Drum Tower, the National Museum, etc.....

And here I am thinking it's super packed! Xi'an is definitely worth two days if you want to see things and not just catch a glimpse. To me, this itinerary looks too much like what travel agencies offer—filling up the days to the max and leaving you exhausted after 10 days of crazy rushing. A lot of time spent in transit. True, she has someone on the ground who can make reservations ahead of time.
NO Noëmie1109 ·
Sure, a lot of time spent in transit, but luckily it's overnight trains. I had to go through an agency for my train tickets because my student friend over there didn’t have time to pick them up. There were a few things I wanted to see, but I also had to plan my itinerary around the trains, which fill up quickly during the New Year period. If we realize the itinerary is too packed, we’ll improvise once we’re there. And if I miss some sites, I’ll just have to go back—what a shame... 😉
SI Sitik Veteran ·
Oh well, what a shame! (humor) You can leave happy. You’ll even get to enjoy the Chinese on vacation—a real highlight. After all, you don’t see that every day.

Have a great trip.

Chongqing—I’d go back in a heartbeat, just for that view.

Hope you get decent weather, not too crappy . You’ll manage the rest

Same here! The view of the city center from the opposite bank is breathtaking. Such a shame about all the pollution...

By the way, in Chongqing, there’s a small building from the early 20th century, built by the French Navy. The story of this place: http://france.chine.free.fr/changjiang/bastille2.html

It has a unique architecture in the region.

The building still exists. I had the chance to go inside in June 2012, but there were guards who only let me walk around the inner courtyard:

Apparently, the place is now run by a trendy bar-restaurant. If you’re interested, it’s at this address: 重庆市南滨路142号 (142 Nanbin Road).

There’s also the Great Hall of the People (人民大会堂)

and across from it, the Three Gorges Museum (三峡博物馆).

They’re on People’s Square (人民广场) in Chongqing. The Great Hall is worth seeing for its architecture, but you won’t spend much time there. The museum is more interesting.

Also worth doing, if it still exists, is crossing the river by cable car. A unique view of the city.

Have a great trip!

Chongqing isn’t polluted—it’s just that there’s a lot of mist.
