Well, it's just that I have limited trust in technology and I like to check my route on the Regis signs 😛. So, I have a feeling this is gonna be fun 😉 Thanks for letting us know anyway, Michel—it’ll help us understand what’s happening to us a bit better 😏

Don’t worry, between political will and on-the-ground reality, there’s an… African pace of things. Here’s a list, just in case: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_renamed_places_in_South_Africa And an article to enlighten you on the issues: https://www.sahistory.org.za/article/pretoria-tshwane-naming-city

Thanks Michel for this travel journal and for all the info, documents, and explanations that are really useful for the "newbies" in their 40s 🙂 ...

Hi Michel,

I had already contacted you to help me organize my first trip to South Africa in autumn 2017. We chose the Cape region and the Little Karoo and came back enchanted, using many of your tips. Having caught the southern Africa bug, we organized Namibia ourselves for March 2019, focusing on the southern half of the country for 3 weeks. I’m starting to plan the eastern part of South Africa for September/October 2019. Looking at the Tracks4Africa map, I’ve marked the regions we’d like to explore with stickers: - Arrival in Johannesburg (2 or 3 days) - Blyde River Canyon region - Crossing through Eswatini - Maputaland region (St. Lucia and its northern coast), Tembe Elephant Park, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park - Heading down to Durban and KwaZulu-Natal - Reaching the Drakensberg - Returning to Johannesburg for the flight home. I’m thinking of doing this over 3 weeks to a month. What do you think, and what are the points of interest? We’re not necessarily looking for the most touristy spots—often, the less crowded places are just as beautiful! We’re intentionally leaving Kruger off the itinerary because we’d like to combine (but keep separate for 4x4 rental) a quick trip to Victoria Falls (flight from Johannesburg, then a Botswana trip—Okavango or Caprivi, skipping Etosha) over about ten days during the same period (either at the start or end of the South Africa trip). Without going for luxury lodges, what parks and routes would you recommend? And how should we return to Johannesburg for the flight home? Thanks for your valuable advice—from you or others. Christine (Latitude 64)

Hi there,

2 or 3 days in Joburg? Safe?

Blyde, yes. The classic route, maybe avoiding Pilgrim’s Rest?

From there, if not Kruger... head to Swaziland.

Before Swaziland... take a look at what’s on offer around Barberton. Still in South Africa, there’s also Ithala (don’t know it, but Mrs. Attila liked it). In Swaziland Lots of people loved Milwane. A stop at Hlane to check out what they offer... get out of the car to see the rhinos up close, go for a walk. I really liked Mkhaya. To get completely off the beaten track, on the other side of the road from Hlane, Shewula Nr and the other two... remote lodges... Isimangaliso, yes, yes, and yes again. Hluhluwe Umfolozi—it’d be a shame to pass through without stopping, but it’s also a question of time. I’ve always avoided Durban by cutting through Zululand.

My favorite stop in the central Drakensberg for its ideal location for Hihgmoor and Kamberg, which are rarely visited.

Giants and Champagne Valley. Further north, Didima. Then the Amphitheatre. Even further up, Golden Gate NP.

All these spots are stunning.

From there, it’s an easy trip back to Joburg.

No tips for the northern extension—I only know (and not well, it’s been a while now) Limpopo.

First round!

My latest travel journal covers this route! Mrs. Attila’s does too.

Leaving Kruger for...

A place like hardly any others exist. Only 3 that I know of. A completely unfenced camp. Small in size. In a real private reserve bordering Kruger.

Hi Michel,

I’m revisiting your post from August that I was rereading today. Where was that camp? You’ve really got me curious now...

It's no longer a secret.

In Manyeleti.

Community-run... so with all the advantages and disadvantages.

Buffelshoek and Ndzakha.

Very basic, not luxurious at all, no electricity, lighting in the dark. Hot water, soap, a good bed. We ate well there.

An upgraded tent, food, drinks if you order a little in advance. Good game drives but don’t count on a blanket...

No barriers at all, right at the gates of Kruger.

The price is very, very reasonable.

Just a heads-up, I’ll say it again—it’s wild wild.

If you choose, Ndzakha might be more generous with game. Not because there are more animals there, but because more jeeps drive around that area... so more observers, which means more sightings.

I’ve been there, my kids too.

Hi,

Are these two camps kind of in the same spirit as Shindzela? From the Booking photos, they even look a bit more "upscale"...
MI Michel85200 Globetrotter ·
"Cossus" isn't the term at all... They're less "luxurious" than Shindzela. The "bathroom," for example.

Without meaning to come off as someone I wouldn’t want to be seen as,

The "community-run" vibe is showing its limits a bit. A private operator would add more—blankets for the drives, a less makeshift feel, broken chairs replaced, etc. At Shindzela, back in my day, the rangers’ rifle was always "on hand," and it’s what we used to escort people back to their tents after dark. Not here... if even the cook or their helper walks you back...

Otherwise, we’re also on the edge of Kruger—no fence at all, etc.
SI Simc4 Veteran ·
At Shindzela at first, I thought being escorted back by an armed ranger was just part of the show. But this year, I saw hyenas circling the camp just as we were about to go to bed... So... it does have its uses after all! 😏
MI Michel85200 Globetrotter ·
There are videos of Shindzela with elephants passing through, and the same with buffalo.

Back in my day... hyena tracks in the sand in the early morning... we weren’t allowed to leave anything outside because of them.

The cook surprised by a lion right outside her "kitchen"...

The first thing the new owner did (back then, a bush runner who’d make you get out of the car to approach a rhino...) was to build "bathrooms and toilets" attached to the tent. Before that, you had to go outside to reach the "facilities"... It was the time when there wasn’t even a generator...

Hey Michel,

I know I’m late to the party, but no worries. Just like always, right?! Has anyone ever told you you’re an angel for posting all those maps of the Drakensberg and the surrounding area?

The photos of the golden landscapes in Lesotho from Guillaume’s travel journal really appealed to me, and your Drakensberg shots continue to enchant me. For now, I’m still in the planning stage, but is it necessary to book way in advance like for Kruger Park?

The Didima you mentioned—is that Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Didima Resort?
DI Diamina Globetrotter ·
Hey again,

I also saw the story about the hippo attack on a tourist boat (which was quite large, too)...

At what size do you think a boat is safe from a hippo?

Joburg / Golden Gate (Mountain Retreat, 2N) / Antbear Lodge, 2N / St Lucia (Whalesong Guest House, 1N), Tembe Elephant Park, 2N), Isimangaliso (Makakatana Bay Lodge, 3N, Swaziland, Hlane NP, Ndlovu camp, 1N, Berg en Dal, Lower Sabie, Satara, Letaba (1N each), Manyeleti, 2N, Sabie Sands, Umkumbe, 1N, Dullstroom, Crichton Hackle Lodge, 1N, and Joburg).

Could you tell me how long your whole trip lasted, please? I’m struggling to figure it out!

In the end, it rains less in South Africa than in Scotland!!!😏
MI Michel85200 Globetrotter ·
Hi,

Yes, Didima is part of KZN Wildlife. I don’t have any idea how important it is to book in advance... probably really useful during South African holidays.

For Lesotho... there aren’t many well-located, decent accommodations. Personally, I’d book pretty far ahead to make sure I could actually stay there and plan my trip.

Yeah, I’m an angel...
MI Michel85200 Globetrotter ·
3 weeks on site.

Umkhumbe is an absolute no-go!

I’d recommend 2 nights in Kruger’s camps instead, in my opinion.

About hippos...

The little ones being with the big ones... as long as there’s a grumpy hippo around, there’s potential danger.

Canoeing among hippos is always risky!

The "speedboat" is safer...

Saw this on the Chobe River... a small boat getting tossed around by a hippo... yikes.

In St Lucia, the boats are big, starting from Kosi Forest (boat’s pretty big but stay alert) or Makakatana (even bigger boat).

The hot spot... canoeing, a long time ago in St Lucia... with no hippos nearby (phew) and crocs snapping at the paddles...

Hi Diamina,

At the moment, I'm still in the planning stage, but is it necessary to make reservations very far in advance like for Kruger Park?

For reservations, it also depends on your vacation period. In July/August, the Drakensberg isn't very crowded, and in 2018 at Didima, we were alone in the camp during the week. The place is truly stunning, and there are various hiking options with different difficulty levels. And Lesotho is just as magnificent, but for accommodations, I think it's better to book in advance. Happy planning!

Good evening, we were in Thendele and it’s one of our favorite spots for the landscape (gorgeous!), the hikes, and the rock shelters where you can see San paintings (I don’t know Didima).

Hey Michel,

Thanks for your replies. I think I won’t be able to decide until early 2020. At that point, I’ll see what’s possible or not and whether I’ll go in 2020 or 2021. Still, I’ll keep gathering info—your travel journal is a gem. 🤪 I’ll also revisit the older posts to dive deeper into the Drakensberg and Lesotho sections.
