I really loved Thailand, but it was too touristy for my taste. So I'm hesitating about going back and wondering if Cambodia or Vietnam would be less crowded with tourists...

Hi everyone, we’ll be in Thailand from August 2nd to 21st, arriving in Bangkok on the 2nd for a visit. From the 5th to the 8th: Angkor temples. Then, starting on the 9th, we’re planning to head to Chiang Mai, and by the 14th or 15th, we’d like to be on an island until the 19th, when we return to Bangkok. Five days in Chiang Mai seems a bit long to us. What do you recommend between the 9th and 15th, and which island? We’re not big fans of sunbathing—we’d love to snorkel and explore the island. Ideally, I’d have liked to find a house to rent, but every time, I end up with places far from the beach, whereas we’d really like to be able to walk to the beach for strolls. By the way, are there a lot of shells? Can we collect them? It seems that in August, swimming can sometimes be tricky due to tides—is that true? Thanks to all the contributors! 😊

Bonjour, Nous partons à 2 en Thaïlande en janvier 2020 pour un mois, et j'envisage de partager mon séjour en : 2/3 en Issan et 1/3 de plage. Et j'aurai besoin de vos conseils et avis. Nous sommes allés souvent en Thaïlande, mais jamais en janvier....

-En arrivant à Bangkok de France, j'ai déjà réservé un vol Bangkok/ Loeï afin de rejoindre Chiang Khan le même jour. Je compte rester 5 nuits à Chiang Khan, est ce que c'est correct ou est ce que ce n'est pas trop long ? Y-a-t-il des balades aux alentours( à pied ou en scooter)

-Par la suite je prévois de rejoindre Nong Khaï( que je connais déjà) par la route en longeant le Mékong. Est ce que le transport est facile entre Chiang Khan et Nong Khaï? Bus ? Mini van ? Combien de temps de transport en moyenne ?Est ce que ça vaut le coup de faire une halte d'une nuit quelque part entre ces 2 villes ?

-De Nong Khaï, je veux aller et loger à Bueng Khan pour être assez proche du Wat Phu Tuk. Même question que précédemment...Est ce que les moyens de transport sont faciles et fréquents entre ces 2 villes et combien de temps.. ? Pour rejoindre le site du Wat Phu Tuk je suppose qu'il faut passer par une agence ou un guide ? Doit-on prendre obligatoirement un taxi ?

-De Bueng Khan je prévois de rejoindre Udon Thani en bus ou mini van, Est ce faisable ? J'ai lu qu'il fallait environ 3heures... ? A Udon Thani, est ce que le lac aux lotus rouges vaut le déplacement ? Car j'ai vu qu'il n'est pas tout près.

-D'Udon Thani je voulais aller directement vers Krabi par avion, mais il n'y a que le vol vers Phuket qui arrive à 19h. Donc je dois obligatoirement dormir à Phuket. Quel endroit est le mieux pour passer une nuit afin de rejoindre facilement Ko Lanta par le ferry ? J'ai vu qu'il avait plusieurs compagnies, donc quel ferry est le mieux ? Ou bien vaut-il mieux rejoindre Krabi plutôt que Kho Lanta? Ou rester quelques jours sur Phuket... ?

J'ai lu pas mal d'avis mais je suis encore très indécis pour ces destinations plages de Phuket, Krabi, Kho Lanta et quel serait le meilleur «circuit» sur 10 jours, en arrivant par l'aéroport de Phuket et en repartant de Krabi en sachant que je ne veux pas speeder?

J'avais l'habitude de voyager en Thaïlande en juillet, et pour ceux qui connaissent, ma plage préférée pour juillet , était Thong Nai Pan Noï à Kho Phangan, mais c'est la première fois que je voyage en janvier et donc je ne connais pas du tout Phuket ou Krabi. Est ce qu'il est intéressant de rester quelques jours sur Phuket et si oui, quelle plage.... ? Hors Patong ou Kata... et surtout pas pour faire la fête mais un endroit cool( j'ai compris que janvier était la haute saison.....). J'ai entendu parler de Railey ? Freedom beach ? ou d'autres?

Et pour Kho Lanta et Krabi quel est votre plage préférée....?( qui ressemblerait à Tong Naï Pan Noï...!lol).

Hello, After a lot of searching, exchanging ideas, and thinking it over, I’ve decided to go back to my original plan of spending two weeks in Bangkok. From January 19th to February 2nd. I’ll also take a quick trip for one night/two days to Ayutthaya (and return to Bangkok, where I’ll have kept the apartment I booked), and possibly the same for Kanchanaburi, depending on how I feel once I’m there—whether I find something more interesting in Bangkok or nearby. The key word is: taking my time to take photos, observe, taste, savor (in every sense of the word), and most importantly, not rushing. Beyond the must-see tourist spots, I’d love to wander around the city and maybe within a 40 to 50 km radius for a day trip to discover unusual and lesser-known streets, houses, temples, markets, gardens, and more. I’ll also be spending two weeks in Chiang Mai and two weeks in Nan. I’m open to any suggestions. Thank you so much!

Hello, We’re heading to Thailand for 26 days (excluding flights) next July with our two teens (12 and 15 years old). My husband and I have been there several times before they were born—so that’s 15 years ago—and I’m a bit worried about some of the changes that might have happened since, especially with the rise in tourism... I’d also like to keep a pace that allows us to settle in a bit and enjoy local life beyond just the main sights. Plus, we’re pretty active. For now, our plan looks like this:

Arrival in Bangkok, where we’re thinking of spending several days (minimum 4) Chiang Mai for about a week 2 or 3 islands in the Gulf Return to Bangkok for 2 days before departure.

We’re pretty set on Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but we’re unsure about which islands to visit—I’ve read such mixed things that I’m even wondering if we should consider the coast instead. Organization-wise, I’d love any tips or feedback on whether we need to book in advance at this time of year, which transport options to prioritize (train, bus, or plane), and of course, any suggestions for stops or routes. Nous avons une bonne connaissance de l'Afrique du Nord, mais sur les conseils d'amis nous souhaitons nous "lancer" en Asie du Sud Est. Nous projetons de partir 6 à 7 semaines à partir du 28 octobre 2020. Nos poles d'interets sont -visites -petits trecs -vivre au milieu des habitants. -calme Il faudrait que le circuit tienne compte des conditions climatiques, surtout" pas trop chaud" On aime bien se déplacer en bus ou train . Je suis une habituee de la Thailande depuis plus de dix ans, voyage en couple, seule et avec les enfants, du Nord au sud de l Est en Ouest, endroits touristiques ou sauvage, j ai toujours pense qu un jour on ferait les Pays voisins mais je ne me suis jamais lancee, peut etre par crainte d etre decue... la Thailande est un Pays tellement facile avec les enfants ou je me sens presque chez moi :) , bref j aurais besoin de votre aide car j hesite beaucoup entre le Laos, le Vietnam et le Cambodge sachant que c est pour le mois de decembre (3 semaines) ou sinon retourner en Thailande ;-).... J aimerais connaitre votre Pays coup de coeur pour l Asie du Sud est, vos suggestions d itineraire pour une famille avec 2 enfants de 8 et 11 ans.

Hi there, During our Thailand trip, we're planning to arrive in Bangkok and then head up to Chiang Mai. So far, so good. But after that, we'd like to go to the islands—either Krabi or Koh Samui. However, the flights listed on 12go.asia seem complicated, with a layover of about 1 hour in Bangkok where we'd have to collect our luggage and check in for the second flight. That feels way too tight.

So, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this route and any tips you might have. Thanks everyone!

Au milieu de tous ces posts concernant le Coronavirus (lol) je pose par ici une question à laquelle j’ai du mal à trouver une réponse c’est assez compliqué voilà je pars dans deux semaines pour 14j et j’ai déjà décidé des étapes de mon voyage : Arrivée et départ de Bangkok et visite de : Sukhothai / chang mai / chang rai / khao sok / koh muk ( oui ça peut faire beaucoup pour 2 semaines mais j’ai l’habitude de voyager en bougeant beaucoup je préfère) Sachant que j’aimerai faire un trajet en train de nuit pour l’expérience :) Après sinon avion bus.. peu importe

Mais le problème c’est que je n’arrive pas à mettre dans l’ordre ces destinations auriez-vous une idée de ce qu’il serait plus pertinent à visiter en premier ou en dernier (et le top si vous avez une idée du temps à consacrer à chaque étape (oui j’abuse lol )) j’aimerais finir par khao sok car on dit souvent qu’il faut garder le meilleur pour la fin :D Par exemple je ne sais pas s’il est judicieux de faire Sukhothai/chang mai / chang rai avant de redescendre dans le sud sans risquer de faire une overdose de temple et pour le coup de ne pas les apprécier à leur juste valeur...

question bonus est-ce que ça vaut le coup de dormir à Sukhothai ?

Bonjour, nous arrivons à Koh Samui le 15 mars . Nous ne connaissons pas cette partie de la Thaïlande. A la base, il était prévu 4 jours sur Samui et une semaine sur Koh Tao. Réflexion faite, autant également visiter Koh Phangan. Ce qui est sûr c’est que nous arrivons à Koh Samui et que nous y resterons qq jours. Après, faut il commencer par Koh Phangan et finir par Koh Tao, ou le contraire, et comment répartir les 11 jours dont nous disposons, ou faire l’impasse sur une île ou n’y consacrer qu’uNe excursion ? Je précise que je n’ Ai pas envie ni le temps de visiter chaque île de fond en comble. Ces qq jours nous permettent d’avoir une approche globale. Nous aimons prendre notre temps en vacances. Le matin en lézardant au soleil avec un bouquin et l’après-midi en se baladant tranquille. D’avance merci pour votre aide, fanny

Fin avril au retour d'une croisière plongée je vais passer 3 nuits à Bangkok. Arrivée en début d'après midi et départ en début de matinée. J'aurais donc 2 jours plein pour "découvrir" Bangkok. J'ai bien conscience que je ne verrai qu'une toute petite partie de la ville.

Je vais donc me concentrer sur le centre historique et les canaux avec leurs marchés flottants.

Our next trip to Thailand is coming up, and we just can't wait! We talk, eat, drink, and dream Thailand 😏

Our itinerary is mostly set, and we’ve found quite a few new things to explore, but I’d still love to hear your recommendations for Bangkok. Just so you know: we love this city, and every time we visit, we spend several days there without ever feeling like we’ve seen it all. So this year, we’re staying for 8 days! Here’s what we have planned this year: * Exploring Nonthaburi * A day trip to Nakhon Pathom (to test out our basic Thai skills 😛) * Khlong Lat Mayom floating market (we went 10 years ago—it’s probably changed a lot!) * The Erawan Museum (we visited Muang Boran on our last trip) * Finally taking the time to check out Wat Phra Sri Maha Mariamman and Wat Yannawa (we’ve planned to go several times but never made it—are they worth a visit?)

This is what we’ve picked so far, but I’d love to hear about the favorite spots and recommendations from travelers who, like us, adore Bangkok.

Hi everyone, I’m a die-hard fan of India, but it’s time I discovered Thailand too to broaden my Asian horizons. I’m heading there on January 19, 2025, for a 46-day trip (no visa needed as I’m French). I’ve pored over a few guidebooks and travel blogs. Based on what caught my interest, I’ve put together a rough itinerary and list of sights. But since I know absolutely nothing about Thailand, I’m kind of flying blind here. Since I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I’ve opted for a few bases where I’ll stay several days in the same place. That way, I won’t have to change locations and hotels every day or so, packing and unpacking my suitcase constantly. Instead, I plan to explore the surrounding area each day, within a maximum radius of 50 to 70 km. So, first question: Is that kind of round-trip distance manageable in a day in Thailand? In India, renting a car for a day—with a driver—currently costs around 35 to 40 € per day. Knowing that 1,300 to 1,500 THB would be my absolute max, and even then, only if I don’t rent a car every single day. Which brings me to my second question: Am I being unrealistic? Otherwise—third question—once I’m settled in the city I’ve chosen as my base, can I get around within that 50–70 km radius using public transport? I’ve already booked all my hotels—with free cancellation—on booking.com at an average price of 950/1,000 THB per night. Does that put me in a good range for value for money? Or am I dreaming?

Here’s my plan:

BANGKOK (13 days, 14 nights): 1 week for exploring Bangkok – Kanchanaburi/Erawan National Park? – Ayutthaya/Lopburi? – Muang Boran – Samut – Songkram/Amphawa

Bangkok -> Chiang Mai by overnight train in first-class sleeper

CHIANG MAI (6 days/6 nights): Mae Hong Son – Hot springs – Chiang Dao – caves – Lamphun – other places to be decided on the spot based on what’s worth seeing and transport options

Chiang Mai -> Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI (7 days/8 nights): Fang – Tha Ton – Chiang Saen – Doi Tung – Chiang Khong – Doi Ang Khang, Phu Chi Fah, etc.

Chiang Rai -> Phrae

PHRAE (4 days/5 nights): Lampang and surrounding areas, depending on what’s interesting to see

Phrae -> Loei

LOEI (4 days/5 nights): Phu Kradung – Chiang Khan and surrounding areas, depending on what’s worth seeing

Loei -> Buriram

PHIMAI (Nakhon Ratchasima/Khorat) (5 days/6 nights): Phimai – Prasat Muang Tam – Phanom Rung – Prasat Phanom Wan

Phimai -> Khorat (airport or train station) -> Bangkok (overnight in Bangkok)

Day 46: BANGKOK -> KOCHI

The trip I took to Cambodia in January 2025 did me a world of good. I’m now considering Thailand, a destination we never included in our plans because even 15 years ago, people said it was too touristy. Still, I’m thinking about the itinerary below, but I don’t feel up to arranging buses, trains, or guides on my own while I’m there. I’m looking for one or more drivers and have been in touch with an agency, but their offers are just copy-paste group tours that I don’t want. So, if you have any contacts, experiences, or advice, I’d be so grateful if you’d share them with me. Here’s my rough plan: Arrival in Bangkok Ayutthaya (2 nights) Kanchanaburi (2 or 3 nights) Sangkhlaburi/Sai Yok (3 nights) Sukhothai (2 nights) Lampang (I’ve planned 3 nights, but that might be a bit much—it depends on what time I arrive in the city) Chiang Mai Chiang Dao Pai Chiang Rai I was thinking about the Mae Hong Son loop—thoughts? What do you think about staying overnight at the Golden Triangle? When I look online, of course, I can find agencies that organize tours to national parks, etc. I’m retired but in great physical shape. I’d rather go hiking than sit in hot springs with crowds of tourists who’ve all arranged meet-ups. I don’t want to spend a day at an elephant camp, and I don’t want to visit Karen villages. Hi there, I'm looking for a way to unwind and planning a trip to Southeast Asia starting in Thailand with a stop in Bangkok. To shake off the stress, I'd love to treat myself to a massage at Wat Pho. But while researching, I read somewhere (on a temple page I can't find anymore) that they offer massages with CBD among other things. Hmm... why not, I'm up for almost anything to feel better. 😐

That said, I've also heard that recreational cannabis use is still illegal in Thailand. Even though CBD isn't exactly cannabis and it's supposedly "therapeutic," is there a risk of a "misunderstanding" with police waiting for me after my massage session, especially if my body smells a bit... distinctive? 🤪

Je vous sollicite car j'envisage de visiter la thailande et le laos entre le 15 novembre 2019(arrivée a Bangkok depuis paris) et le 23 decembre 2019 (départ de Bangkok pour paris) soit un vol aller retour avec un intervalle de plus de trente jours mais inférieur a 60 jours.Je compte acheter avant le départ en ligne un aller retour pour le laos depuis la thailande. Mes questions : suis je dans les clous pour obtenir 30 jours en thailande a l'arrivée et encore trente jours en revenant du laos et est ce que je risque un refus d'embarquement a paris.

Pour info l'année derniere j'ai fait thailande birmanie mais dans un delai de trente jours(arrivée en thailande depart en birmanie et retour thailande le tout en avion) :aucun probleme a l'immigration quand je suis revenu de birmanie .

So excited to be back on this forum of fellow travel enthusiasts to ask for advice about my upcoming two-week trip to Thailand in March 2026.

Given that it’ll be the start of the intense heat and burning season, I’m wondering about my itinerary, which would focus on the central/southern part of the country.

Ideally, I’d like a mix of relaxation in a nice setting, culture (temples or old palaces), and I’m keeping six days in Bangkok, which I love :)

I’m planning to get around by train, car (through an agency), or plane if it’s easier.

Option 1: HUA HIN – 3/4 days (day trips to PHETCHABURI + SAM ROI YOT + ARTISAN MARKETS) KANCHANABURI – 3/4 days NAKHON PATHOM – 1 day BANGKOK – 6 days

My doubts: -Will the sky be too hazy (from smoke) for good photos? -Will Kanchanaburi and its surroundings be less enchanting during this period (dry landscapes)?

Option 2: PHUKET (4 days): exploring the island + PHANG NGA Bay HUA HIN (3/4 days) BANGKOK (7 days)

My doubts: -How do I get from Phuket to Hua Hin? It seems like flying isn’t an option, and I’d have to take a long trip up the southern coast or return to Bangkok to catch the train. -Is Phuket even remotely pleasant during this ultra-touristy period? -Is Karon a good base for exploring Phuket?

Option 3: PHUKET KAO SOK SURAT THANI? BANGKOK

My doubts: -I’d like to add a destination with beautiful temples in this area, but maybe Surat Thani isn’t the best idea.

Option 4: SURAT THANI >> HUA HIN (6/7 days) BANGKOK

Doubts: -I’m worried this route might be too tiring if I have to move every two days.

I’m open to any tips—or even a completely different itinerary if you have other ideas.

After that, I’ll be heading from Railay to Koh Yao Noi. Should I buy tickets from a local agency or at the pier?
