Hi everyone, I’m a die-hard fan of India, but it’s time I discovered Thailand too to broaden my Asian horizons. I’m heading there on January 19, 2025, for a 46-day trip (no visa needed as I’m French). I’ve pored over a few guidebooks and travel blogs. Based on what caught my interest, I’ve put together a rough itinerary and list of sights. But since I know absolutely nothing about Thailand, I’m kind of flying blind here. Since I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I’ve opted for a few bases where I’ll stay several days in the same place. That way, I won’t have to change locations and hotels every day or so, packing and unpacking my suitcase constantly. Instead, I plan to explore the surrounding area each day, within a maximum radius of 50 to 70 km. So, first question: Is that kind of round-trip distance manageable in a day in Thailand? In India, renting a car for a day—with a driver—currently costs around 35 to 40 € per day. Knowing that 1,300 to 1,500 THB would be my absolute max, and even then, only if I don’t rent a car every single day. Which brings me to my second question: Am I being unrealistic? Otherwise—third question—once I’m settled in the city I’ve chosen as my base, can I get around within that 50–70 km radius using public transport? I’ve already booked all my hotels—with free cancellation—on booking.com at an average price of 950/1,000 THB per night. Does that put me in a good range for value for money? Or am I dreaming?

Here’s my plan:

BANGKOK (13 days, 14 nights): 1 week for exploring Bangkok – Kanchanaburi/Erawan National Park? – Ayutthaya/Lopburi? – Muang Boran – Samut – Songkram/Amphawa

Bangkok -> Chiang Mai by overnight train in first-class sleeper

CHIANG MAI (6 days/6 nights): Mae Hong Son – Hot springs – Chiang Dao – caves – Lamphun – other places to be decided on the spot based on what’s worth seeing and transport options

Chiang Mai -> Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI (7 days/8 nights): Fang – Tha Ton – Chiang Saen – Doi Tung – Chiang Khong – Doi Ang Khang, Phu Chi Fah, etc.

Chiang Rai -> Phrae

PHRAE (4 days/5 nights): Lampang and surrounding areas, depending on what’s interesting to see

Phrae -> Loei

LOEI (4 days/5 nights): Phu Kradung – Chiang Khan and surrounding areas, depending on what’s worth seeing

Loei -> Buriram

PHIMAI (Nakhon Ratchasima/Khorat) (5 days/6 nights): Phimai – Prasat Muang Tam – Phanom Rung – Prasat Phanom Wan

Phimai -> Khorat (airport or train station) -> Bangkok (overnight in Bangkok)

Day 46: BANGKOK -> KOCHI

Hi, just a quick note mainly for Samsong, even if he’s still giving me the silent treatment. I’ve been in Nan since yesterday and... I love it! So thanks, Thierry. It’s exactly the kind of place I’d been dreaming of... Even if communication is a bit tough, it’s not impossible. They don’t even know the most basic English words! Everyone laughs and they’re the first to pull out their phones to... translate. They’re even quicker on the uptake than I am. And then there’s the time I say Nan (pronounced "Nane"). They don’t understand me. After a while (sometimes a long one), they reply: "Ah, Nan?" (pronounced "Nane") 😵🤳😃

The town is exactly how you described it back in 2022. Though I’m surprised to find so many trendy, slightly intellectual "Cafés." Apparently, coffee—excellent everywhere—is king in Nan. It feels like a university town. And it seems pretty lively at night! But for now, I’m going to bed early. I caught a nasty cold, which didn’t stop me from walking 12 km this morning. But I came back to my accommodation by 3 PM (gorgeous and luxurious with top-notch service for 800 baht—even a cute local welcome gift this morning, plus other unexpected touches like a bottle of honey and chrysanthemum flowers for tea. The lady must’ve guessed I was coming down with something yesterday). I thought about going out for dinner but didn’t have the energy. I think I’ve got at least 39°C fever...

Anyway, I’m sending you this message, Thierry, because you mentioned a daily bus to Chiang Rai, so I didn’t look into it. But now it’s a real problem—no buses to Chiang Rai, only taxis. At least 2,500 baht for the cheapest one! I’ll check the bus station directly tomorrow. Online, it’s all taxis, no buses. I’d like to explore the countryside/mountains if I can find an affordable driver. Any ideas for destinations or itineraries? Thanks.

Hello, After a lot of searching, exchanging ideas, and thinking it over, I’ve decided to go back to my original plan of spending two weeks in Bangkok. From January 19th to February 2nd. I’ll also take a quick trip for one night/two days to Ayutthaya (and return to Bangkok, where I’ll have kept the apartment I booked), and possibly the same for Kanchanaburi, depending on how I feel once I’m there—whether I find something more interesting in Bangkok or nearby. The key word is: taking my time to take photos, observe, taste, savor (in every sense of the word), and most importantly, not rushing. Beyond the must-see tourist spots, I’d love to wander around the city and maybe within a 40 to 50 km radius for a day trip to discover unusual and lesser-known streets, houses, temples, markets, gardens, and more. I’ll also be spending two weeks in Chiang Mai and two weeks in Nan. I’m open to any suggestions. Thank you so much!

Je pars avec mon compagnon qui est du genre... stressé ! Il n'aime pas trop partir dans l'inconnu, ni les choses qui ne sont pas organisées, alors que moi, je partirais bien juste comme ça ! Prendre les billets d'avion et voir sur place !

Je suis déjà partie il y a 4 ans à Bangkok mais je n'avais eu que 24h et tout avait été fait très vite et surtout très mal ! Surtout avec le décalage horaire dans les dents ! Alors j'aimerais organiser les choses mieux pour les visites pour ne pas passer à côté de l'essentiel.

J'aurais donc besoin de conseils pour : - Situation de l'hôtel à Bangkok - Petit déjeuner à l'hôtel ou pas ? (Sachant que chéri stressé) - Attrape touriste à éviter ? - Attrape touriste qu'on en peut éviter ? - Comment se déplacer dans Bangkok ? - Ne pas tomber dans une arnaque ? - J'hésite à emprunter un tuk-tuk ? Je voudrais le faire 1x pour lui montrer mais je ne veux pas me faire (trop) arnaquer non plus... (mais je pense qu'il faudra bien que ça arrive ! ). - Aller à Koa San Road ou pas ? Hello, We’re heading to Thailand for 26 days (excluding flights) next July with our two teens (12 and 15 years old). My husband and I have been there several times before they were born—so that’s 15 years ago—and I’m a bit worried about some of the changes that might have happened since, especially with the rise in tourism... I’d also like to keep a pace that allows us to settle in a bit and enjoy local life beyond just the main sights. Plus, we’re pretty active. For now, our plan looks like this:

Arrival in Bangkok, where we’re thinking of spending several days (minimum 4) Chiang Mai for about a week 2 or 3 islands in the Gulf Return to Bangkok for 2 days before departure.

We’re pretty set on Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but we’re unsure about which islands to visit—I’ve read such mixed things that I’m even wondering if we should consider the coast instead. Organization-wise, I’d love any tips or feedback on whether we need to book in advance at this time of year, which transport options to prioritize (train, bus, or plane), and of course, any suggestions for stops or routes. What would you recommend visiting from this station for a weekend (leaving Friday afternoon, returning Sunday evening)? Hello, For my partner’s birthday during our trip to Thailand, I’d love to take her on a "spa" day to beautiful waterfalls and/or hot springs (and maybe find a nice hotel nearby, plus a lovely night and a massage to complete the experience!). We’ll be there between January 29 and February 11, 2026, which is the dry season in many regions... Bummer if we arrive and only find a trickle of water for the surprise! We won’t be heading north—we’re doing Bangkok, then Krabi, and an island in the south. I’d spotted the hot springs near Krabi, like Namtok Ron Khlong Thom (and maybe the Emerald Pool), but what will the water levels be like there at that time of year? I’d also considered Erawan Falls, even if it means leaving Bangkok for a day/night, but same question about the water flow...

Has anyone here been to these places or have any feedback? Or another spot like this that fits within our planned route? Thanks in advance, and have a great day everyone!

Hi there, I’m heading to Thailand at the end of June (I know it’s not the best time, but I don’t have a choice) for three and a half weeks, and I’d love your advice on the itinerary. I’d like to visit Koh Lanta, Ko Lipe, Ko Chang, and Ko Kood. What do you think is the ideal order based on the travel logistics? My initial plan was this, after a night in Bangkok to recover from the flight: 1: Flight Bangkok – Krabi, then boat Krabi – Koh Lanta 2: Boat Koh Lanta – Ko Lipe 3: Boat Koh Lanta – Krabi, then flight Krabi – Bangkok, then flight Bangkok – Trat, and finally boat Trat – Ko Chang (quite a long day!) 4: Boat Ko Chang – Ko Kood 5: Boat Ko Kood – Trat, then flight Trat – Bangkok for the return trip.

Is there a better order or a more efficient way to organize this? (For example, starting with Ko Lipe from Hat Yai and then taking a boat to Koh Lanta?) Anyway, thanks in advance for your thoughts and tips, and have a great weekend!

Mais comme nous nous déplaçons en transports en commun je me disais qu'Amphawa serait peut-être plus facilement accessible. Mais est-il encore assez préservé? Allé, je me lance... Nous partons avec mon mari en Thaïlande Dans 10 jours. Nous allons passer 2 jours et demi à Bangkok . J'aimerais sil vous plait avoir votre avis sur notre planning (faisable? autres idées à caler...;-).

- Arrivée le dimanche à 10H45. Le temps de se poser tranquille dans notre airbnb, je pense qu'il nous restera plus que l’après midi donc je pensais qu'on pourrait se balader dans le marché de chatuchak et faire le quartier chinatown qui n'est pas loin de notre airbnb. Le soir, j'aimerais faire un restaurant rooftop... Avez vous des endroits sympa à me conseiller?

- Lundi : grand palais et wat pho tot le matin puis j'aimerais faire un marché flottant l’après midi. Des conseils? Le soir, combat de boxe déjà réservé.

- Mardi : bouddha d'émeraude et la partie plus moderne de bangkok Pathum Wan.

Bonjour Nous sommes à sukhothai et demain nous descendons sur Bangkok. Nous devions aller à ko samet pour finir notre séjour du 31/12 au 05/01. Mais à la lecture des différents avis j'ai peur d'être déçue de cette île. Selon les dires c'est une ile poubelle et avec énormément de touristes. Donc ou aller pour finir notre séjour en sachant que l'on veut plage et repos et pas trop loin car ras le bol des transports ? Merci

Nous sommes en famille donc pas un quartier pour la fiesta. Facile d'accès des 2 aéroports car on arrive à suvarnabhumi et on repart de don muang le lendemain.

Sawadee krap! En mars prochain, jedébarquerai à Bangkok et avant d'aller sur mon île secrète, je vais faire un détour au nord de Bangkok pour aller visiter deux vignobles thaïs; Gran Monte Estate et PB Valley Winery (et peut-être Village Farm & Winery).

J'aimerais connaître les meilleurs moyens de transports possibles (taxi, bus, train?) pour se rendre dans ce coin-là (Nakhon Ratchasima 30320) de Bangkok (Dusit) et les prix moyens que je peux m'attendre à payer, le temps pour s'y rendre, etc. Et tant qu'à faire, une petite GH bien située et pas trop chère comme pied-à-terre. Je pense y rester deux jours, peut-être trois car il y beaucoup à voir dans cette région.

Bonjour Le départ approche dans 1mois et demi. Nous prenons le vol de la thai airways à Paris vers bkk à 12h30. Faut il manger avant ou y a t'il un repas du midi ? Le soir et le matin ? Et le retour départ 00h05 il y a que 1 petit dej avant l'atterrissage ?

Et dois je réserver nos sièges à l'avance ou lors de l'enregistrement on peut avoir des sièges cote à cote (nous sommes 4 dont 2 jeunes ados) si nous arrivons dans les 1ers ?

Our next trip to Thailand is coming up, and we just can't wait! We talk, eat, drink, and dream Thailand 😏

Our itinerary is mostly set, and we’ve found quite a few new things to explore, but I’d still love to hear your recommendations for Bangkok. Just so you know: we love this city, and every time we visit, we spend several days there without ever feeling like we’ve seen it all. So this year, we’re staying for 8 days! Here’s what we have planned this year: * Exploring Nonthaburi * A day trip to Nakhon Pathom (to test out our basic Thai skills 😛) * Khlong Lat Mayom floating market (we went 10 years ago—it’s probably changed a lot!) * The Erawan Museum (we visited Muang Boran on our last trip) * Finally taking the time to check out Wat Phra Sri Maha Mariamman and Wat Yannawa (we’ve planned to go several times but never made it—are they worth a visit?)

This is what we’ve picked so far, but I’d love to hear about the favorite spots and recommendations from travelers who, like us, adore Bangkok.

My friend and I are heading to Thailand for three weeks between December 14th and January 4th.

After a week of relaxation in the south by the beach, we plan to explore northern Thailand to see the mountains and discover the country’s history before wrapping up in Bangkok.

I’m torn about which region to explore. For convenience, we’ll arrive in Chiang Mai, spend a few days in the area, then head to Lampang, followed by Sukhothai, and finally Bangkok.

After Chiang Mai (1 or 2 days—I’m worried the period might be too crowded and we won’t enjoy it much), we’ll have 3 days and could go to: Mae Hong Son (with a potential return flight); Chiang Dao and Fang; or Nan province, though that seems a bit far for just 3 days. We could also spend only one day in Chiang Mai and have 4 days instead.

For these 3 (or 4) days between Chiang Mai and Lampang, we’d love to do some beautiful hikes, preferably on our own, and see stunning landscapes, nature, and small villages.

Among my options, which would you recommend? Or where can we find great hikes that we can do independently and that aren’t overrun by mass tourism? I’ll admit, I’m struggling to find info—there are lots of small national parks, but details are scarce, and even AllTrails doesn’t have much for some of them...

Just to clarify, we’re considering hiring a car with a driver if needed.

Le gouverneur du tourisme indique que les touristes internationaux devront attendre le 4eme trimestre pour faire du tourisme en Thaïlande, et encore pas partout. des "bulles touristiques" sont en cours d'identification pour accueillir les étrangers. Pour les locaux ce sera possible dès juin dans des stations comme Hua Hin. Des lieux seront également identifiés pour des longs séjours qui seront fermés pour les étrangers afin de sécuriser les locaux et les vacanciers eux même. L'état d'urgence est prolongé jusqu'a fin juin.

Suite à ça l agence me propose de reporter mon voyage avant le 31 mars 2021 mais Seulement dans des destinations bien précises (Grèce , Tunisie etc...) si aucune de ces destinations me convient es ce que je peux exiger le remboursement intégral de mon voyage ?? J ai actuellement payer 30% de mon voyage le prélèvement du reste était censé se faire lundi( 40j avant le départ) mais pour l instant rien n a été fait , es ce que le prélèvement des 70% restant est donc annulé ? Bonjour, Il y a 3 ans nous avons pris un pack avion+bateau Bangkok - Koh Mook, via Trang et à l'époque nous étions bien content d'avoir un pack tout compris parce qu'on a vu aucun taxi à proximité de l'aéroport. En février, nous arriverons de l'aéroport de Trang, pour aller à Phattalung. Existe-t-il des bus pour aller à Phattalung ? des taxis ? Nous avons aussi envisagé une autre option : un taxi à la journée pour le trajet Trang-Phattalung + visite des alentours de Phattalung. Quelqu'un aurait-il déjà fait ça ? Quel tarif ? Merci B.V.

Je pars avec ma compagne en Thaïlande fin janvier. J'ai déjà prévu un petit itinéraire mais j'ai un trou au milieu, que je ne sais pas par quoi occuper tant tout me semble attirant. En gros nous souhaiterions débuter notre séjour par quelques jours à Bangkok puis deux jours au Khao Yai.

La grande question que je me pose est ou aller entre le Khao Yai et le sud. Sachant que le 25 c'est le nouvel an Chinois (hôtels sans doute full dans pas mal de coins j'imagine). Du coup, soit on reste dans la région du centre, soit on monte au nord et puis avion vers le sud. Bref je suis un peu perdu, tout me semble attirant. On ne cherche rien en particulier si ce n'est découvrir du pays. 4 jours ce n'est pas tellement donc je préfèrerais éviter les gros trajets (de jour en tout cas).

Nous passerons la fin de notre séjour sur une île (avion? train de nuit? bus?). Probablement Koh Yao Noï sur les conseils d'un ami ou Koh Kood mais si vous avez d'autres propositions je suis partant :) Nous cherchons un endroit calme, sans prétention, sans fiesta avec une possibilité de sorties snorkeling de qualité.
