Ryanair fuel ration angers pilots

Ryanair pilots have denounced as “insane” attempts to pressurise them into flying with less fuel by imposing a cap on their safety reserves. The low-cost airline is saving money by curbing the discretionary rights of pilots to request extra fuel. The disclosure, made in internal company documents seen by The Sunday Times, has led to claims that the safety of passengers is being compromised as the price of oil soars. Details of Ryanair’s policies emerged as the Civil Aviation Authority revealed that the number of emergencies declared in British airspace because of fuel shortages had doubled in five years. Last year, 27 planes were given the right to make priority landings, up from 11 in 2003. There were also 18 “May-days” caused by fuel shortages in the same period, when British airports had to go on an emergency footing with fire engines on the runway. Under European rules, every plane must carry a “contingency” load of about 5% of a trip’s fuel, and enough to divert to an alternative airport. Across the airline industry, captains also have a duty to anticipate delays from headwinds, storms and rerouting, and to request extra fuel to cope with this. Pilots at Ryanair, Europe’s largest low-cost airline, must now abide by a limit of 300kg of extra fuel, costing £180. This provides about five minutes of extra stacking time for a Boeing 737. Evan Cullen, a pilot with 19 years’ experience and president of the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association, said commercial pressure on pilots to pare down the fuel they carry was compromising safety. The internal Ryanair memo, sent to pilots in May, reveals that the company insisted that any request by a captain for extra fuel should be the “exception”. It referred to the 300kg maximum. The memo shows that Ryanair is issuing warning letters to pilots who request extra fuel without explanation. Pilots claim such letters can be used in disciplinary proceedings. The pilots have responded by complaining in anonymous postings on the Ryanair European Pilots’ Association website. One says: “It is insane to push pilots to fly with the minimum fuel and take the risk of ending with a low fuel situation and maybe no place to go because the only diversion airport within reach will be mobbed by other aeroplanes.” Pilots say Ryanair ranks them according to how much extra fuel they use. A spokesman for the airline rejected the pilots’ claims as “anonymous, unverified and inaccurate”. He said: “No pilot is allowed to fly with minimum fuel as these clowns claim.” He admitted, however, that pilots were allowed extra fuel only in “exceptional cases”. He said Ryanair had suffered one Mayday in the past three years caused by fuel shortages. A spokesman for the CAA said it would not comment because Ryanair’s fuel policy was monitored by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). Additional reporting: Paul Eddy

Faillite de la compagnie aérienne One-Two-Go Airlines

Je devais voyager entre Bangkok et Hat Yai fin juillet et vice versa mais un ami vient de m'annoncer que la compagnie One to go avec laquelle je devais voyager est en faillite et suspend ses vols jusquau mois de sptembre🤪🤪🤪 Apparemment je n'ai aucun recours:je viens de perdre 80euros.Est-ce que d'autres sont dans la meme situation?Qu'allez-vous faire? Je suis actuellement a Ventiane .Je pense qu'il me reste 2 options:prendre des billets d'avion avec une compagnie certainement beaucoup plus chere maintenant ou me resoudre a prendre le train ou le bus jusqu'a Hat Yai.......😕 Si quelqu'un a une solution miracle a me proposer, faite moi signe!!!! Merci d'avance Solene

Day 10 & 11 Proceeded to Maun via the famed Lake Ngami, which is now just a dust-bowl. Camped at Island Safari lodge, which has nice shade and was further from the township than Audi. However the music and barking of dogs from the townships could still be heard from across the river. The camp site looks the same as 22 years ago when I last stayed there, and the ablutions unfortunately show their age. I was told by the manager that the Leroo-le-Tau group has taken it over, so improvements are probably planned. Security seems a problem, as a security guard was posted in the camp site for the night. Next time I would prefer camping at one of the places further outside of Maun. P60 per night. Booked at Bots wildlife at Maun for Moremi and Chobe. Have sympathy when you try internet booking in future, as they don’t have a computer and everything is written by pencil and filed in flip files, from a mobile home half under a tree. And this for an industry that is bringing in millions to Maun. Could not get a booking for Savuti.

Day 16 Drove up to Chobe, entering at the Ngoma gate. Encountered the biggest black mamba I have ever seen, on the road. It reared up with its head at the level of the Defender’s window when we suddenly came upon it. At Ihaha we were allocated camp site 3, close to the run down ablution block without solar power, working ladies toilets or toilet seats. An afternoon drive turned up 4 lions and numerous elephants and buffalo. It was full moon, warm and peaceful. The Chobe River was flowing by gently. We were sleeping in rooftop mode with the Explorer bow tent on the roof rack. At midnight I was awoken by the campers at the next site about 100m away, chasing a honey badger which was raiding their food. At 00h30 I was again awoken by noises at my campsite. When I shone my torch, I looked into a black face staring up at me from the opened back door of the Landie. He shouted at me to go to sleep, I shouted back at him to voetsek, as he started pulling items from inside the car. I did not at that stage see his two collaborators, but when I started to open the tent they started throwing rocks at me. Fortunately the rocks bounced off the shade cloth material that the fly screens are made of and did not hit me. They then started to run away, after further trying to distract me by throwing my wife’s guitar around. I got my strong spotlight and some self-defense measures that I had, out, as they were still hanging around within striking distance, but disappeared when I illuminated them. I tried to warn the other campers by blowing the hooter and shouting, but was told next morning that they thought I was having problems with the badger. They were also burgled that night. My loss was a cooler bag with cutlery and some food, a container with pills and medicines, and my Cobb, which was in a convenient carry bag. The camp officials were very concerned when told about the incident the next morning and called in the Botswana defense force, which sent in a patrol. Apparently this has happened before and is committed by Namibians who come across the river, but because the river is so wide at the moment they were not expecting these raids yet.-- Fallait pas que je vous le dise ?
