Bonjour à tous, On me propose actuellement une expatriation dans le secteur des services en Afrique Francophone (Mali, Sénégal, Guinée, Burkina Faso, Coté d'Ivoire, Bénin, Tchad, Cameroun, Gabon ou Congo : "ce sera l'un de ces pays, mais je n'aurais pas choix") pour 1 an ou 2 ans.

je viens de m'inscrie sur ce site car je voudrais partir de fin mai à fin aout dans les pays centraux de l'afrique de l'ouest (cameroun, togo, gabon, burkina faso, bénin...). Je voudrais donner mon aide dans un chantier humanitaire ou donner des cours en école primaire pour une courte durée mais je crains que mes dates ne correspondent aux vacances scolaires dans leurs écoles... Je vais partir avec mon amie debut 2006 pour un TDM sac a dos et transports variés. Premiere etape l'Afrique que nous allons descendre jusqu'au Cameroun voir peut etre Gabon. Ensuite probleme nous voulons aller en Namibie et pour y s'y rendre il faut passer par l'Angola !! Le truc c'est que je vois de plus en plus de voyageurs qui s'y aventurent !!! Mais ils y vont avec leurs popre 4x4. C'est donc faisable !! Est il possible de s'y aventurer avec des transports locaux ? Ou faire du "stop" pour passer avec d'autres personnes dans leurs 4x4 ? Je pensais sinon prendre un bateau a Pointe Noire pour arriver a Walvis Bay. Mais c'est cher 80 Euros / Pers pendant 11 jours !! N'y a t'il pas d'autres bateaux qui font cette liaison en moins de temps et moins cher ?

Voilà, je vais repartir prochainement à Douala pour essayer de traverser l'Afrique Centrale avec pour but Cape Town en Afrique du Sud. En plus du visa camerounais il me faudra obtenir le visa gabonais (mais il se prend désormais facilement à la frontière, j'en ai eu confirmation), le visa congolais et le visa de la RDC. Je sais que le visa de la RDC est très compliqué à avoir sur place (Yaoundé, Libreville ou Brazzaville) et il faudra certainement que je l'obtienne à Paris avant de partir. Qu'en est-il du visa pour le Congo ? Serait-il plus simple de le demander à Yaoundé ou éventuellement à Libreville ? Quelqu'un a-t-il essayé récemment ? Cordialement, Yves.

Bonjour, Qq mots pour vous faire partager notre découverte. Vous cherchez une destination authentique, peu connue, allez visiter cet archipel aux larges des côtes gabonaises. En avion, au départ de Doula, Luanda, Praia, Lisbonne. Peu d'info sur Sao Tomé et pourtant tant de choses à découvrir. Petit coin de paradis encore peu touristique, très préservé. 2ème plus petit pays d'Afrique, l'île "du milieu du monde", île chocolat". Vous pouvez faire des randonnées à pied ou en vtt au coeur des plantations de cacao et café. n'hésitez pas si vous avez besoin d'info.

Voila peut etre que une personne ici pourra m'aider! J'ai la mère d'une amie qui se retrouve hospitalisée suite à un forte poussée de fièvre de 40° sans raison voila 1 semaine et demie. Elle est d origine gabonaise, elle à eu une rejute de paludisme en 1998, et à ce jour les medecins ne trouvent absolument rien et n'arrivent pas à lui faire baisser la fièvre. Actuellement nous sommes en attente d'analyse de selle.

Si qqn à une idée de ce que ca peut etre ou connais éventuellement qqn de son entourage qui à vécu le même problème! merci par avance de votre aide.

I’m diving into planning a trip I’ve dreamed of for a long time: crossing Africa from North to South solo, with a departure planned for October 2025 for about 8-9 months. I’m leaving from Paris with a starting budget of around 7,000 €, aiming to supplement it with work along the way.

My planned route: Senegal → Gambia → Sierra Leone/Liberia (if logistics work out) → Côte d'Ivoire → Ghana → Togo → Benin → Cameroon → Gabon → Kenya (Masai Mara) → Uganda (Bwindi gorillas) → Rwanda → Tanzania (Kili + Serengeti + Zanzibar) → Mozambique → Malawi → Zambia (Victoria Falls) → Botswana → Namibia → South Africa (Cape Town). Madagascar as a bonus if timing/budget allows from Mozambique.

I’m not a backpacking newbie—I’ve done several trips in Europe and I’m familiar with the lifestyle, hostels, local transport, etc. But Africa is my first big adventure on this continent, and I’ve got some very concrete questions I’d love feedback on from people who’ve been there.

🎭 My big dilemma: flexibility vs. pre-organized work

What matters most to me is NOT rushing through. If I feel good somewhere, I’ll stay longer. If a region doesn’t click, I’ll cut it short. That seems totally incompatible with having pre-booked work or volunteer gigs, yet I need that income to stretch my budget.

I’m torn between two approaches:

Option A: The mixed rhythm: 3-4 weeks of volunteering in a country (free accommodation, full immersion), then 1-2 countries in classic backpacker "vacation" mode, then another mission somewhere, etc. This gives a breathing rhythm and avoids burnout from non-stop volunteering.

Option B: The continuous flow: finding gigs as I go, from the previous country, contacting hosts 2-3 weeks in advance with a flexible date range. Keeping maximum spontaneity but never arriving anywhere without a safety net.

Have you tried either? What actually works on the ground in Africa?

🌍 What I’m really looking for in this trip

Not just the classic tourist spots. I want to see the country as it is—eating at local joints, taking local transport (bush taxis, minibuses, sept-places), staying with locals when possible. The big reserves and safaris are part of the plan (Masai Mara, Serengeti, Okavango), but just as much as hanging out in a residential neighborhood in Dakar, understanding how people really live.

Volunteering or work interests me for that reason too (not just for free lodging, but because it’s the deepest way to dive into a country). Working at a school in Ghana, a lodge in Kenya, a permaculture farm in Mozambique—I see it as an immersion that classic tourism can’t offer.

🎒 My concrete questions

About Workaway and Worldpackers: I’ve read a lot but would love on-the-ground feedback, especially for West and East Africa. Are hosts really flexible with dates for long-term travelers? Do the advertised gigs match reality? Are there alternative platforms you’d recommend for Africa specifically (I’ve heard of Help Exchange, WWOOF Africa, local networks…)?

About "off-platform" jobs: Is it really doable to find informal work on the spot (bars, restaurants, lodges) without prior contacts? In which countries/cities is this most accessible for a French speaker without a local work permit?

About logistics between countries: For those who’ve done the West Coast (Senegal → Ghana → Benin), how did you cross borders? Direct buses or local shared taxis at each border? And for the jump from Central Africa → Kenya, is a flight mandatory, or are there feasible overland routes?

About Madagascar: I’m considering adding it from Mozambique (flight Maputo or Beira → Tana). Those who’ve done it backpacker-style on a tight budget—is 3-4 weeks doable, or is it too short to be worth it?

I’m open to all tips, experiences, warnings, and pleasant surprises. And if you’ve got trusted local contacts (Workaway hosts, associations, community lodges), I’m all ears!

"Ah, here it is at last—that sweet scent of elsewhere so dear to Cricri and Lulu’s noses, that mix of apprehension and desire when facing the unknown.

We’re really diving into the unknown this time, taking you to the island of SAO TOMÉ... also known as the island: *‘Wait, what did you say?’* 😄. Because apparently, no one’s heard of Sao Tomé—except our Portuguese friends.

It’s an archipelago of three islands smack in the middle of the world, right on the equator, off the coast of Gabon.



No, these aren’t the sun-soaked, Polynesian lagoon islands. Here, *‘it rains, it pours...’* pretty much all the time, it seems.

There’s not much to *‘see’* in the traditional tourist sense—EXCEPT for stunning landscapes, lush vegetation, a few beaches with golden or black sand, colonial buildings still in their original state, a single main road, and plenty of *‘tracks’* that are more or less drivable. All this surrounded by an African population that speaks Portuguese and is known for its warm welcome.

Well, that should be enough for our happiness—and hopefully yours too! 😊



Ready for landing?

Hello, If Ethiopia fascinates you, draws you in, and like me you don’t want to visit this country solo… maybe we could exchange ideas with the goal of sharing a driver and a French-speaking guide (?). I’ve traveled a lot on my own (Peru, West Africa, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, a few European countries, some U.S. states, Greece, Mexico, etc.—backpacking, hostels, public transport, local restaurants), also with a friend (Iran, Tibet, China, Russia, Gabon, South India), with my husband (Egypt, Vietnam, Canada 3 times, Florida, Jordan, North India, Dominican Republic, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, among others). He doesn’t want to travel anymore, my girlfriends aren’t interested in Ethiopia, and I don’t feel like going alone this time.

My last solo trip was last October (2024) in San Francisco. I loved it. I’m in my seventies now… pfff… but in great shape, physically resilient, good walking endurance, 40 years old in my head… I love music, I choose restaurants more for the local vibe than the menu (I adapt)… no fixed schedule, but I can adjust there too—sandwich or fruit for lunch, a little beer in the evening, and most importantly: no stress! Cool, cool… When traveling as a duo, if one of us wants to spend the day or evening alone, we meet up afterward, and it’s perfect. I’m more talkative in writing than in person—I love listening! So… if the adventure tempts you, don’t hesitate.

I’m in touch with a woman currently there who gave me the contact info for the guide she’s traveling with in the southern region, near the Omo tribes (she has a Facebook companion).

I spoke on the phone this morning with a "seasoned traveler" —we have a lot in common, and we’d be up for going together.

Forming a small group (4/5 people) would be ideal. February is a great time (climate-wise). The south is generally safer than the north, but nothing’s set in stone—nothing’s planned yet. Everything’s open to discussion and we’ll figure it out together!

A massive explosion sets things off... then around 5:30 PM, a huge, coordinated crowd floods the streets of Bujumbura—and the rest of the country—growing by the minute and surging through the main arteries in deafening noise. Backed by every kind of vehicle—motorized or not—pedestrians, bikes, Bajaj, Volkswagens, and Toyota Coasters unite to raise their voices with blaring horns that could wake a nearby ancestor or the Supreme Guide. The police and all law enforcement in the country—military included—are on high alert but haven’t intervened yet, keeping a very close eye on how the situation develops!

Still at work when RFI and France24 send me their "urgent" Burundi alerts, a full 90 minutes after the reliable outlet "Iwacu Burundi" broke the news. Je compte partir 6 mois en Afrique de Juin à Décembre. J'atteris au Maroc et je repartirai de l'afrique du sud. Je vais commencer par le maroc, mauritanie, Sénégal ( pas de probleme pour les visas). C'est apres que ça se gate. Apres le Sénégal Je veux aller en Guinée Conakry par voie terrestre en taxi brousse et bus jusqu'a la frontiere. Je pensai qu'on pouvait faire son visa au poste frontiere mais visiblement non... comment puis-je faire ? sachant que je n'ai pas de justificatif d'entrée et de sorti du pays étant donné que je ne viendrais pas par avion. Le probleme risque de se répéter puisqu'apres la guinée Conakry je souhaite aller en bus jusqu'a la cote d'ivoire. Puis cote d'ivoire- Cameroun en avion , Cameroun-gabon en bus... Pouvez-vous m'éclairer svp? Merci
