Burundi's Awakening in 2021, and What Comes Next?

A massive explosion sets things off... then around 5:30 PM, a huge, coordinated crowd floods the streets of Bujumbura—and the rest of the country—growing by the minute and surging through the main arteries in deafening noise. Backed by every kind of vehicle—motorized or not—pedestrians, bikes, Bajaj, Volkswagens, and Toyota Coasters unite to raise their voices with blaring horns that could wake a nearby ancestor or the Supreme Guide. The police and all law enforcement in the country—military included—are on high alert but haven’t intervened yet, keeping a very close eye on how the situation develops!

Still at work when RFI and France24 send me their "urgent" Burundi alerts, a full 90 minutes after the reliable outlet "Iwacu Burundi" broke the news. My trusty wall calendar and today’s date stamp confirm it’s March 23, 2019, backed up by my phone. Worried, I think to myself, *Oh no, here we go again in this tiny Central African country... But my God, why???*

Ah...! I hope all that racket was just for the AFCON match between Burundi and Gabon...?! I did a little snooping online! Either way, it's starting off strong!

(Oh, and I just found out two days ago that the Supreme Leader has passed away!)

Any special approach for this future travel journal? I can only follow along, especially since this country is almost never covered! 🙂
"Je suis africain, non pas parce que je suis né en Afrique, mais parce que l'Afrique est née en moi." Kwame Nkrumah.

"J'ai appris que le courage n'est pas l'absence de peur, mais la capacité de la vaincre." Nelson Mandela

Yes, a historic moment that united the entire nation. For the Guide, he won’t have much time to enjoy his new "ultra-luxury" villa, a grant of around 500,000 €, and for the rest of his life, an allowance equal to a deputy’s emoluments....

Yes, exactly—it’s back to Burundi for another round! Their historic first qualification was the real game-changer.

The AFCON 2019 schedule is out, and with extra euros for AF and KQ, let’s go feel the vibe on the ground!

A mere 25-minute delay on the AF flight to Nairobi made us miss the morning Kenya Airways connection. The afternoon JamboJet flight still let us claim the 600 € flat-rate compensation for the delay, though. And that’s one less day on a tight, down-to-the-wire schedule.

No surprises here—this (first) pretty basic travel journal will let you (re)discover:

Day 1: Kangaroo Hotel in Bujumbura, Day 2: Public Garden and Kiriri Campus in Bujumbura, Day 3: The Batwa Pygmies, Kiganda Treaty, and Sacred Drums Sanctuary. Day 4: Karera Falls, the German Gap, and Mugara Hot Springs. Day 5: Rumonge, Mount Heha, and Rusizi Reserve.

Kangaroo Hotel – Bujumbura, heading toward the nearby Cotebu Market.

Toward Bujumbura’s city market (Kwa Siyoni).

Grilled fresh mukeke with fries for 25,000 BIF (12 €). Definitely not the best value for money (size-wise), but the restaurant, bar, and room service are truly open 24/7.

A rather small pool during one of the frequent evening downpours.

“View” from the rooms overlooking the pool at 75 € per night—oh wait, which pool???

Air-conditioned, of course.

Complimentary for just one person 😊.

A pleasant and secure balcony (the doors were left wide open all night).

standard room with city view at 65 €

I chose the room with a view of the bustling city, even though it’s much noisier during the day (but very quiet in the evening after 7:30 PM).

It’s not the best view of the city with the customs warehouses around.

And on top of that... the radio station "Buja FM."

The hotel is located on Avenue de l'OUA, between the two main markets: «Kwa Siyoni» (or BCM) and Cotebu.

Hello,

Ah, here we go with the next part 😉! I rarely post more than one photo at a time, but the other day I managed to post three at once—you just have to upload them one by one, which takes a tiny bit longer... Though I did notice they need to be a certain size (or weight, I guess). Now that the Guide has passed, let’s hope this beautiful country takes a wiser and more peaceful path for its future. Amahoro !

DAY 2: Bujumbura Public Garden

Entrance (BIF 500 = 0.23 €) and a faded map of the Public Garden... after a gust of wind!

The public garden offers a health club, a children's playground, a basketball court, and a nice 1 km circular track.

The Garden is very popular for physical activities after work, family outings, and weekend weddings.

Can you guess the translation? 😉

A pleasant, clean, safe, and relaxing spot 🙂

Safi Beach

The only public beach in the city center, incredibly safe (lots of police on duty, but they allow photos), perfect for swimming or sunbathing... when the sun shows up!

The big neighbor

Playground for kids

From Safi Beach in the city near the port, the venerable institution of the Cercle Nautique.

If you ever get transferred here, the UNICEF offices are on the right. For the lighthouse on the left, that’s the Zion Beach bar/restaurant—Koffi Olomide played there in 2017.

Day 2: Kiriri Campus in Bujumbura

Let's head to the other side of the Ntahangwa River, up high (photo taken from the hotel).

Kiriri, one of the oldest campuses of the University of Burundi in Buja. Except for registered students, the entry fee is 2,000 BIF (= 0.9 €).

Roger Bastin, the Belgian architect.

The entry fee grants access to sports facilities, including the swimming pool.

Rumor has it this is the recent villa of the (late) Supreme Guide...

Here’s the main reason for visiting the campus. The National Unity Monument in the bottom left corner.

The view of the city from this spot is one of the best you’ll find.

It’s best to come in the morning, as the sun shines from behind (East).

Hello,

Well, I'm waiting for what comes next—the visit to the Twa people (Busekera?), the Karera Falls, and the German Gap (which I haven’t been to yet), plus the rest. 😉

Well, I'm waiting for the rest—the visit to the Twas (Busekera?), Karera Falls, and the German Gap (which I haven’t been to yet), and the rest. 😉

Sorry, Madame Anne 😊. My apologies! The sheer number of photos and the format required by VoyageForum (max 10 photos per post, plus one by one for uploads) kinda cooled things down while writing.

Still, to make it up to you, the fun’s about to pick back up soon...

Thanks so much for your encouragement! 🙂

Hello,

I’d love to continue exploring this little-known country too 😉

Thanks in advance, and kudos for this initiative!

Thanks so much, Loïc, for the motivation! 🙂

Just a heads-up: since yesterday (August 28th), the film "Petit Pays"—based on the excellent novel by Gaël Faye, son of the man who knows Burundi better than anyone—has been released in every cinema across France! You *have* to go see it, if only to compare it with the book...

Sure enough, I followed the news and got the book, but I live on Réunion Island and don’t know if it’ll be distributed here.

Thanks again,

Ah, what a shame...! Yes, the festivities start in November, but I’ll be waiting until March ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYpaghNSbK4 🙂 with new songs.

I didn’t miss the release of *Petit Pays*... Wow, what an emotional punch! And such great music choices... here’s an excerpt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISCVcAF_wys

Thanks (better late than never ) for the photo.

Gaël Faye just released his second book—let’s see if it’s as good as the first!

With the COMESA summit now over, measures have been taken to make it easier for foreign tourists to visit.

Here’s a recent tourism video of the country:

And the city has changed a lot. For the past 5 years now, the lake has been rising inexorably, swallowing up entire sections of the city for an indefinite period. Many places are no longer what they once were, and on top of that, the economic crisis hitting the country and its people—Buja is now just a shadow of itself. It’s pretty sad to see in person.
