As a senior woman, I’m planning a solo trip to Uzbekistan this time. I arrive in Urgench on April 18 and leave from Tashkent on May 9, so 3 weeks. 1 - Aral Sea: I’d like to start there. Has anyone had a recent experience to share? Depending on your feedback, I’ll decide whether to go or not—my whole itinerary shifts based on that! 2 - What’s the best way to get around between cities? The train seems preferable, but booking and paying from France is complicated… and I’d have to plan everything in advance 😕 3 - Has anyone gone directly from Samarkand to Fergana? If so, by what transport? Or is it mandatory to go through Tashkent? 4 - Any tips for the most frequent and reliable transport in the Fergana Valley? 5 - I’d also love recommendations for accommodations (hostels, guesthouses) and nice restaurants in the country!

The Afrosiyob races through a premature twilight, lashed by a blizzard of thick snow. In the endless gray, a monumental industrial complex occasionally emerges, ghostly. Here and there, in the middle of nowhere, a human silhouette appears (a soldier?), standing motionless by the tracks. On the screen mounted in the middle of the ceiling, a dashing Bollywood cat in vibrant colors writhes in all directions, throwing smoldering glances at a dancer on the verge of fainting. A server moves down the central aisle, offering crepes for sale—ones I suspect are stuffed with ground beef. I’m in Central Asia, in Uzbekistan, somewhere between Bukhara and Samarkand.

I chose the title "notes"—scattered thoughts, rough drafts. I’m not sure what I’ll write, but one thing’s certain: this won’t be a linear travel journal.

The departure date is approaching, and I’m side-eyeing my suitcase... well... uh... It’s true I’m allowed 30 + 8 kg, but if I can pack much lighter, that wouldn’t bother me. So, to eliminate a few "uhs":

1. It’s going to be quite chilly outside, especially in the mornings—I know that—but what about indoors? Do Uzbek hotels tend to be overheated? (More than 21/22°C?)

2. Is this country like Turkey, where you find foam slippers in the room’s linen kit?

3. Are dry cleaners or laundromats common?

I’m just starting my research for Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara... I’m not sure I’ll manage to organize everything with the train or find a driver every time I need one. I don’t want a packaged tour. Can you tell me if everything needs to be booked well in advance? I’m also looking for fun activities for my teens (other than museum and mosque visits). We’ll be traveling in October. It’s been a while since I’ve traveled outside an area packed with ATMs, so I’m wondering about Uzbekistan and the best exchange options. The guidebooks aren’t very chatty on the topic.

From what I gather, transport and hotels will be booked and paid via bank transfer to a local agency. For personal expenses, is it better to bring euros, dollars, or can we still find ATMs along the Silk Road cities to withdraw cash with our bank card?

The question on my mind is in the title: is it better to go from Khiva to Bukhara by train or by car?

I love traveling by train (though I’ll have the chance to take it between Bukhara and Samarkand, and then from there to the capital). I’m curious about Uzbek roads, but the excursions I’ve planned will let me satisfy that curiosity over shorter distances than the 500 km of this trip.

I’ve read on this forum that the road can be grueling, though those posts are a bit dated now. I’ve also read (on Advantour—reliable?) that the train connection isn’t daily. For the past few days, the national railway website has only shown me blank pages—I can’t check anything. I *did* spot a train leaving Khiva at 11 AM and arriving in Bukhara at 6 PM this summer, though...

Any recent experiences to share about either option?

Hi everyone, happy to be back on VF! I’ll be in Uzbekistan this coming April and will of course visit the three classics—Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. However, I’d also love to get out of these cities to explore the Uzbek countryside and experience its nature. Mountains, steppes, etc. Ideally, with some great hikes passing through villages. I feel like a total newbie—I’ve never really thought about this before, beyond repatriation—what happens if I get seriously ill or injured abroad? Thankfully, it’s never happened to me.

But now I’d like to cover my bases.

Do you know of any insurance providers, or where to look and how to choose one, that covers potential hospitalization costs, specifically in Uzbekistan?

I don’t even know if this kind of coverage is tied to a specific destination, in Europe (France?), or if it’s arranged directly in the country... 🤪

Since time is a bit tight, we wanted to fly from Tashkent to Urgench, but we can’t find any direct flights between the two. Do we need to book from France, and if so, which site should we use? Nous sommes le 15 juin, et je constate que les pays d'Asie Central ont encore tous leur frontières fermées (Ouzbekistan-Tadjikistan-Kirghizstan) . Salut à tous ! Toujours à la continuation de ma préparation pour l'Ouzbékistan ! Quelqu'un saurait-il s'il y a des consignes pour bagages à une des 2 grandes gares de la ville ou à l'aéroport même de Tashkent ? Une petite journée à attendre dans la capitale, ce qui permettrait de visiter un chouïa , les mains pratiquement dans les poches ! 😛 Dans l'attente de vos réponses... merci !

l'agence Sanpietroburgo (ITALIE) organise normalement des voyages en camping car en OUZBEKISTAN , prochain programmé 20 Avril . Mais cette année, pas sur, du fait de manque de candidat ! dommage . existe t'il une autre agence pour ce voyage ?

J'ai élaboré le programme suivant pour notre circuit individuel en mai :

- 2 jours Khiva - 1 jour forteresses du désert - 1 jour trajet Khiva-Bouhara - 3 jours Boukhara - 3 jours hors villes (Nuratau ou équivalent) - 3 jours Samakande (départ fin d'aprés-midi pour Tachkent) - 1 jour Tackent

Il me reste 1 journée supplémentaire à mettre. Vous la placeriez où dans ce programme ? à Khiva (car premier jour en arrivée directe de Paris et donc un peu de fatigue éventuelle à récupérer) ? à Samarkande (quitte à organiser sur place une activité hors la ville) ? Je vous pose la question car en raison de la période de mai, je pense qu'il va falloir que je verrouille les dates de l'excursion vers Nuratau.

Merci de votre avis (même si je me doute bien que à chaque fois personnel comme avis).

Nous partons en Ouzbekistan en mai. Nous souhaiterions alterner la visite des villes avec un peu de rando : je regarde les possibilités vers le lac Aydarkul ou vers Hayat ou encore dans le parc d'Ugam-Tchatkal vers Tchimgan. En lisant les différents comptes rendu de voyage, j'ai l'impression que beaucoup passe par une agence ou un guide local pour organiser ce genre de séjour tout inclus. Est ce que certains d'entre vous auraient l'expérience d'un séjour en individuel ( taxi depuis Boukhara/Samarcande + réservation chez l'habitant sans intermédiaire + éventuellement guide sur place pour randonner).

Est ce qu'il existe d'autres endroits pour faire de la randonnée dans le pays ? des retours sur les paysages autour de Tchimgan ?
