Bonjour,

Ideas for a one-week Andalusia itinerary
by Breitenau · 2026-03-06 · 11 replies
Hi everyone, I’m sharing my draft itinerary with you because I just booked our flight tickets, and I feel like it’s quite late in the season. So, I’d like to be sure about my stops before reserving the hotels. I’ll be traveling alone with my two adult children. We want to prioritize outdoor walks, avoid too many indoor visits (both for budget and preference), and not spend too much time on the road.

D1: Arrival at 9 AM in Malaga, day in Malaga and overnight stay D2: Head straight to Nerja (1-hour drive) and spend the night there D3: Head straight to Granada (1.5-hour drive), spend the day and night there D4: Granada. Visit the Alhambra (Nasrid Palaces tour at 5 PM) and spend the night D5: Head to Ronda (2.5-hour drive) and spend the night D6: White Villages and overnight in Ronda D7: Head straight to the Costa del Sol (e.g., Estepona), spend the day and night there D8: Return to Malaga to catch our flight

There you go! This itinerary takes into account that we’d like to do a circuit starting from Seville in a few years. That said, it’d be a shame to miss something doable from Malaga.

Questions: Since the Alhambra visit is only at 5 PM, and we’d already have the day to explore Granada, would arriving the day before be a mistake? Or should we skip this day and dedicate it elsewhere (Costa del Sol? Head toward Tabernas?)? The old town appeals to me, but maybe the Sacromonte neighborhood isn’t essential... Same question for Ronda: should we dedicate a full day to it, or combine Ronda and the White Villages in one day? Note that we love wandering around villages outside, so that might answer my question! :)

Final question: Is it better to rent the car at Malaga Airport or in the city? If we rent at the airport, we’d need a hotel with parking, which doesn’t seem easy. Or stay outside the city and park for free near the center if possible? I’ve read comments about taking a taxi to Malaga and then picking up the rental car at the airport the next morning. The taxi would really need to be affordable...

Thanks so much for your feedback and suggestions for visits during this little circuit. Have a great day, everyone! Christine
Traveling to Push Your Limits: What the Sea Taught Me in Kenya
by Noirenvoyage · 2026-01-15 · 2 replies
Hi there, I often travel solo, and like many women, I get asked the same questions over and over: “Aren’t you scared?” “Do you feel safe?” “Do you really dare to go that far alone?” Recently, during a trip along the Kenyan coast, I had an experience that made me think differently about solo female travel. At Wasini Kenya, on paper, everything seemed simple: a boat ride, then some snorkeling. But on the boat, the sea was rough. It was rocking hard. And then that familiar little inner voice came back—the one that doubts, that overthinks, that wants to stay in control. Traveling solo is often like that too: being responsible for yourself, your decisions, and your limits. Then, once underwater, everything changed. The noise disappeared. There was nothing left to prove, nothing to control. Just breathing, trusting your body, and letting yourself be carried. That moment reminded me that solo female travel isn’t just about destinations or external safety. It’s also an inner journey: learning to listen to yourself, to recognize your fears, and sometimes to overcome them without forcing it. I took the time to share this experience in more detail here, for anyone it might help or reassure: 👉 https://noirenvoyage.com/wasini-kenya-apprendre-a-faire-confiance-sous-leau/ And I’d love to hear your thoughts: 👉 For those of you who travel solo, has travel ever taught you something about yourself? 👉 And for those who are still hesitant: what’s holding you back the most right now? Looking forward to chatting! 🌊
Requirements for travel to Russia and Mongolia
by Tiger3 · 2025-12-20 · 88 replies
Hi there, I’m planning a trip to Russia and Mongolia, starting from France. Crossing the border at Poland/Belarus or Georgia/Russia—other borders seem either closed or complicated. Tourist visas for 3 months with multiple entries. Do you have any info on Russian companies that cover a 4x4 vehicle for 3 months, and what prices in rubles or euros you’ve paid?

Which bank did you use for expenses? (EuroMastercard and Visa cards no longer work.)

Regarding Russian SIM cards, a new system called "Gosuslugi" has been introduced. How long did it take you to get one, and what steps did you follow?

Thanks
VF Members' Cruise Departure Calendar for 2026

hi there Here’s the cruise schedule for 2026. It’s a great way to get ideas and maybe even meet up with other members. 2 essential rules:

1) never "quote" the calendar when replying—this’ll avoid any confusion 2) follow the format below DD/MM - username / SHIP IN CAPS / number of days / cruise title / departure port DON’T FORGET THE SPACES between the / /

REMINDER Despite my requests, few people follow the requested format. Cruises that stray too far from it won’t be listed anymore—sorry!PLEASE respect the templates! COPY AND PASTE THE FORMAT BELOW AND REPLACE WITH YOUR DETAILS IF YOU’RE STRUGGLING DD/MM - username / SHIP IN CAPS / number of days / cruise title / departure port DON’T FORGET THE SPACES between the / / It takes time to fix mistakes, so THANKS TO EVERYONE for your help!

A Week in Malta in Spring 2025
by Elise47 · 2025-07-05 · 6 replies
Why not Malta? We thought it was an original, off-the-beaten-path destination... The advantage is there’s a direct flight from Toulouse, our departure city. That’s what convinced us to take a week-long couple’s trip to Malta. I had booked the accommodations (breakfast included) + an airport/hotel transfer on Booking. First stop: VILLA DEL PORTO, a very pleasant guest house in a great location. We were welcomed by the owner, who gave us all the info we needed to get around. How to get to Valletta? By ferry shuttle. Valletta Ferry Service - Cospicua. And for everything else, a brilliant app for the buses that crisscross the island: TALLINJA. I highly recommend this app. We traveled by bus all week without any issues. The next day, we spent the day in Valletta, the capital. That’s when we realized this destination is actually very popular—streets packed with thousands of tourists! Luckily, we managed to navigate through parallel alleys and find small hostels or bars to eat or grab a drink. The city is stunning and steeped in history. On the third day, we took the bus to the south of the island: MARSAXLOKK. A charming, authentic fishing port with plenty of waterfront restaurants and souvenir shops. We ate at CAFÉ DE PARIS—a delicious fresh fish, perfectly prepared. On the way back, we wandered through the beautiful town of Senglea. Then we ordered takeout from D VIRI'S TAKE AWAY near the guest house via email. It was delicious! On the fourth day, we left Villa del Porto and headed to Valletta by ferry to catch the GOZO FAST FERRY—a 45-minute catamaran ride to the island of Gozo. After a good lunch by the port, we took the bus to our destination: XLENDI. A village at the end of a gorgeous bay. We stayed at the San Andrea Hotel—a small room with a balcony and sea view. Fifth day: Bus to Victoria. A magnificent citadel, a meal at a small bar in Piazza San Frangisk, then we continued by bus to the north, stopping in Marsalforn for coffee by the sea and a short walk to the natural salt pans carved into the rock. Back to the hotel by bus. Sixth day: A short walk to Xlendi Tower, a watchtower at the entrance of the bay, beautifully restored. Then we set off on a sea excursion in a small boat for six passengers. Honestly, I recommend it! Two hours cruising along the breathtaking coastline and turquoise sea—20 € per person. www.gozoboathire.com Delicious lunch on the terrace at "The Boathouse Restaurant." Seventh day: We packed our bags again and returned to Malta by ferry to Cirkewwa. The terminal isn’t very welcoming—you have to take a bus to find a town. We had lunch in Mellieha, then continued our journey, still using local buses, to RABAT, next to the ancient fortified city of MDINA. Another stunning city we explored at our own pace once the tourists had left. Eighth day: Bus to the airport. In conclusion, we’re thrilled with our trip. Of course, we didn’t see all the sites recommended by guidebooks, but we wandered at our own rhythm and came back with a head full of memories, images, and great moments spent in Malta and Gozo.

What to do in Vancouver?
by Mariebicycle · 2025-06-26 · 12 replies
Hi everyone! I’m planning to spend about a week in Vancouver in September. I’d love all your tips for exploring the city to the fullest, plus recommendations for well-located hotels that are safe and not too expensive—since I’m traveling solo, it’s frustrating that rooms often cost the same whether it’s for one or two people...

Also, what are some great things to do outside Vancouver once I’m there?

Thanks for your suggestions!
Kenya - January 2025 - Tsavo East - Tsavo West - Samburu - Meru NP - Aberdare NP
by Sylvie56 · 2025-06-13 · 127 replies
Hello everyone,

I’d like to invite you on a new adventure in Kenya.

Back in 2010, my husband Ben and I fell in love with Kenya, and we’ve been traveling there regularly ever since. This 2025 safari marked the first weeks of an important milestone in my life: retirement.

Of course, Felix—our guide and friend for all these years, whom some of you may even know from this forum—joined us again.

We chose an itinerary that takes us through the parks and reserves we particularly love in Kenya: Tsavo East (3 nights), Tsavo West (2 nights), a transition day in Embu, Samburu (5 nights), Meru NP (4 nights), Nanuyki to visit the Mount Kenya Animal Orphanage (
https://mountkenyawildlifeconservancy.org/) (1 night), and Aberdare NP (2 nights).

This safari wasn’t our most prolific in terms of wildlife sightings and photos (all taken by Ben), but I still think it’s worth sharing our experiences and impressions of the places we visited. Maybe other travelers will find useful information here to help them fulfill their dream of a Kenyan safari one day...

Living in Brittany, we left from Nantes on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, on the 6 AM Air France flight to CDG, then took the direct flight to Nairobi at 10:50 AM. No issues this time on either flight (unlike in October 2023...).

We arrived in Nairobi at 9:20 PM local time (there’s a two-hour time difference with France at this time of year). Going through passport control and collecting our luggage went smoothly. The hotel shuttle (https://67airporthotel.co.ke/) was waiting for us. We shared it with a friendly Swiss couple who were there to climb Mount Kenya. We arrived at the hotel around midnight. The 67 Airport Hotel is 10-15 minutes from Jomo Kenyatta Airport and offers great value for money. Plus, it’s close to the Mombasa road, which is handy when heading that way the next morning.

On Thursday, January 9, we had breakfast at the hotel restaurant at 6:30 AM, and as planned, Felix arrived around 7 AM. We got to check out his brand-new 4x4 Nissan—we’d be the first to test it! 🙂

We set off for Voi, making our usual stop in Mtito Andei. Traffic was heavy on the Mombasa road, with lots of trucks.

We arrived at the entrance of Tsavo East around 1 PM and made it to Sentrim Camp (https://www.sentrim-hotels.com/sentrim-tsavo.html) just in time for lunch.

We found Tsavo East unusually green—there had been heavy rains in December, which isn’t typical. As a result, the animals were scattered and harder to spot. The watering hole visible from the camp’s dining area was completely deserted, whereas it’s usually bustling with herds of elephants and other mammals.

Our tent, No. 9, for 3 nights.

This camp is well-located inside the park. It’s simple but comfortable enough for our tastes, the staff is super friendly (as is often the case in Kenya), and the buffet-style meals are varied and good. Tsavo is the main destination for tourists staying on the coast who come for a night or two on safari. In January, some days at the camp are very quiet, while some evenings, the restaurant is packed with groups (lots of Italians, in particular).

Tsavo is, of course, famous for its elephants. This time, we didn’t see many large herds, but we did have some great encounters with solitary males.

Around this small watering hole, we saw a gathering of African open-billed storks—we’d never seen so many before!

Tanzania: Should we use a local agency and/or guide to organize the trip?
by DjobiSan · 2026-09-28 · 9 replies
Hello fellow travelers,

I’m starting to plan a trip to Tanzania + Zanzibar in August 2027 for 2 to 3 weeks with my partner.

I’ve never been there before and I’d love some advice, especially for Tanzania where we’re planning to do several safaris in the North.

Specifically:

Do you recommend using a travel agency to organize the trip, or are guidebooks and internet recommendations enough? If you’ve used a local agency (rather than one in France), which one? Would you recommend hiring a guide for the entire stay in Tanzania, or is it better to travel independently except in the parks where I’ve read that guides are mandatory? If you’ve used a local agency (rather than one in France), which one and at what price? Have you had any bad surprises (hidden fees, inexperienced guide, poor vehicle condition)?

Looking forward to reading your tips! 🙂 Thanks in advance

White as snow: February 2025 friendly photo contest
by Attila · 2025-02-02 · 87 replies
I could just as easily have written white as marble, white as salt, white as coconut milk...

This month’s theme is white in every way imaginable.

Not just a little touch in the top right corner of the photo!

Nor a white square on a white background...

Also, black and white won’t be allowed.

For the rest, I’ll let the voters be the sole judges of whether the theme is respected!

I’m now borrowing Ragamuffin’s wording for the rules:

Every VF member can submit up to 3 photos, until Sunday, February 23 at 11:59 PM, Clermont-Ferrand time.

Each photo must be posted in a separate message, with its number (1, 2, or 3).

Don’t forget to add a little explanation (comment, location, etc.).

Voting:

Every VF member can vote for the 3 photos they think are the best, based on their own criteria and the theme.

Voting will take place from Monday, February 24 to Friday, February 28 at 2:00 PM, Clermont-Ferrand time.

The chosen photos should be listed in order of preference: - 1st photo: 3 points - 2nd: 2 points - 3rd: 1 point

The winner is the author of the photo with the most points.

Results will be published on February 28 in the late afternoon. In case of a tie, the number of first-place votes will decide. The winner will have the honor of organizing March’s contest.

Photos that have already been nominated (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in another contest are not eligible to participate in this one.

The off-topic contest discussion is happening here
Budget for Tanzania with a safari
by Amande006 · 2024-11-06 · 46 replies
Hi there, We’re planning a trip for 2 adults and 2 kids to Tanzania and Zanzibar. I’ve had a quick look, and the prices are starting to get pretty wild. We’ve got a budget of 8,000 €, and I was thinking of doing three or four days of safari and three or four days in Zanzibar, but even that seems like it might be over budget. Have you got any thoughts? I was also considering heading straight to Zanzibar and doing a one- or two-day excursion by plane instead—maybe that’d be cheaper than staying in a lodge. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experiences and any price tips, departing from Nice!

Transcanadienne à vélo entre Winnipeg et Sault-Sainte-Marie English translation pending
by Suil · 2020-09-10 · 5 replies

Excursion agencies for seeing bears, dolphins, and orcas from Vancouver
by Fastball83 · 2020-05-04 · 14 replies
Hello everyone,

First of all, I hope you're all staying healthy and your loved ones too during the epidemic.

So, I need some information for a future trip (which I hope I can take soon).

My goal is to go to Vancouver and take a day trip (or two if necessary) to see bears, dolphins, and orcas.

Here are my questions:

- What’s the best time of year to maximize my chances of seeing all three species? - Which town or village should I head to for the best chances? - How much time should I plan to spend there?

Are there any excursion companies departing from Vancouver that offer this kind of tour? If so, could you recommend some names?

Thanks in advance for any tips you can share!

See you soon,
