Bonjour Je serai sur Bruxelles du 3 au 8 décembre 2009. Il est difficile de choisir un endroit où dormir pour 5 nuits avec petit déjeuner inclus lorsque l'on ne connait pas la ville. Quelques auberges jeunesse tels que Sleep Well, Jacques Brel et Generation Europe n'ont pas de lits disponibles pour mes 5 nuits. J'hésite maintenant entre le Vincent Van Gogh (dejeuner inclus) et le 2Go4 Hostel (dejeuner non-inclus). Je suis confus, car je ne sais pas sur quels commentaires me fier via les divers forum. Je cherche simplement un endroit où dormir qui soit pas cher, propre, acceptable, facile d'accès, pas trop bruyant pour me reposer pour mes 5 nuits. Il est possible de me proposer un autre endroit pour un maximum de 30 Euros la nuit. Merci de me conseiller, car je ne sais plus quoi faire. Au plaisir

Je viens de passer 1 heure a répondre en detail a une question sur la descente de l'Amazone en bateau depuis Iquitos jusqu'à Belem (en venant du machu-pichu). Après un tel élan d'écriture (exceptionnel pour moi !) je pense que les infos peuvent interesser pas mal de gens. Donc, voici une copie de ma réponse (en anglais pas parfait, desolé !):-- Well this is exactly what i have done 1.5 yaers ago. It was really fanstastic as you see some of the amazone affluents near machu pichu and it's amazing to think you meet the same water 3000 km later in Iquitos ... until the Atlantic sae if you patient!

Well, you really need time in fact, but you can stop in a few Amazon cities easily as you have to change several times to other boats.

The price of the plane is higher in Brazil than in peru, so if you want to keep some time, it's better to fly in peru and use boat in Brazil.

I remember the price for a Cusco -> Lima -> Iquitos ticket was 128 dollards with is quite few if you consider you fly maybe 2500 km over the forest (with is really impressive). Spend a while in Iquitos (2, 3 days) and you can do some better Amazonia excursions here (5 to 10 days and more) than later i think as the forest is better conserved here and it's less touristic. Once in Iquitos you have to go to the Brazilian frontier (laeticia / Tabatinga) witch is in fact the same divided city): You can use an express boat (8 hours and 50 dollards more or less), or a normal boat (cheaper but 24 hours may be more), or even plane (1h30 and 70 dollards if y remember well). Then you can spend a while in Laeticia(colombian part)/Tabatinga(Brazilian part) to visit too and breeze the Indian Atmosphere. It's a really animated world lost city in fact. Just during the colombian hollydays or Brazilian Hollydays it's more crowded as a lot of colombian come for on of the unique secured colombian amazone start point for excursions (colombian/Brazilian hollydays usually in Jully and December ). Seems there is some good excursions too here but some are returning close from Iquitos so it's better to do them there (in Iquitos). From Laeticia/Tabatinga to Manaus, you have 2 options : By plane from Tabatinga Airport (more or less 300 dollards one way to Manaus for 2 or 3 hours), or by boat (100 dollards, for 4 to 5 days with food included on board, in "Hamocs" class like most of the people !). This can seems long, and it can be for some people. But if you like to meet people and speak spanish or Portugues you'll enjoy it (like me!!). The boat is sometime far from the border of the river, and sometime close so you can or can't see o lot of things, but it stops in a few small lost cities (yes cities ! with no roads going to them!), and people are coming in while other are leaving the boat each time, so it's kind of animated. When i was there, there was colombians, Brazilians, europeans ... a big mix and i really spent good days speaking and drinking (a little bit! ). The boats have usually a few cabins too ("camarotes"), for 2 persons, if you wich to keep your things more secure or need more intimity, but it's twice or 3 times the hamoc class price. They all have bathrooms/toilets (with amazone water) and a bar with music on top. Food and water included, but drinks not. Better to drink mineral water too.

Note that you could cut your trip to Manaus in two parts (more or less equals) and go first to Téfé if you want to visit. Haven't been there, but there is some national reserves and probably good excursions too. Most of the boats stops there anyway so ... you just have to choose your destination in Tabatinga. Once in Manaus, you have to take another boat to continue, so you can also spend some time downtown. It's a nice city, swiming in Indian culture and modern in the same time (because of defiscalization lows). I loved it. From Manaus to Belem by plane : more or less 300 dollards again for 2 hours (more one of timezone change) or .... by boat: 5 days to Belem for again 100 dollards food included. But i think you should cut it in two and stop in Santarem (2.5 days) down on the Amazone river. It's a nice quiet city with nice beach on Tapajos rio "Alter do chao". Then you can easily take another boat to Belem (2-3 days) or Macapa (same duration).

Here : important notice : The PARINTINS CARNAVAL : If you are here at the end of June, you can't miss the " Bois de Parintins", an extraordinary Amazonian carnaval during 5 days in the Parintins Island (down 2 boat days on the Amazone river from Manaus). It's between MAnaus and Santarem so you can stop and continue after to Santarem. It's really incredible and beautifull and may be like the Rio carnaval (Yes i said it!!!) but with Indian touch. Really fantastique. Problem the city of Parintins is small and hotels booked sometimes one year before at really expensive prices! (may be 5 times the normal price and only for the 5 full days of carnaval, not less). If you are in Manaus a few days before, a lot of Amazone boats are stoping there usuals trips to go to Parintins island. You can then book a ticket to Parintins easilly. The price (30 dollards for the cheapers) include usually the return ticket Manaus -> Parintins -> Manaus and you can stay onboard at night to sleep in hamocs during the 5 days of the carnaval as the boats they there during all the carnaval time. Again, there are some cabins too, but with "carnaval special prices" the cheapest are ussually 100 dollards for one persone (this time) and until 400 dollards, for 5 days. If you are in Manaus in time you should go there by boat, sleeping on it, and then continuing to Santarem and Belem. Or you can also catch a plane from Parintins to Santarem and Belem, as i 've done (missing time) but it's more expensive too and you have to reserve early for the carnaval time.

Well, that's all i think. You have also a nice boat trip from Belem to Macapa and return (30 hours) witch goes throw MArajo Island and pass closed from the river border so it's easy too see the Indians small villages and houses.

If other questions, i am staying in touch. Personnaly i had done Iquitos -> Laeticia by plane, and Tabatinga -> Manaus by Boat, and Manaus -> Parintins by boat again ... and finished by plane until Belem. It does 7 days of boat. 5 days of Carnaval and the rest to visit the cities (laeticia, Manaus... Belem) and take plane. I visited Santarem on an other time coming from Macapa so i have travelled all the Amazone until Peru finally !

We are doing well and working hard to recover, Club El Mandarin did not suffer any mayor damages and will be ready on Nov 24 for a soft opening with around 55 rooms available, and then from December 1st we are going to be working with the 100% of our room capacity.

For now two of our three restaurants will be functioning (La Fazenda buffet restaurant and Quetzal our gourmet a la cart restaurant), we are rebuilding the palapa by the pool (Mandarin Restaurant for snacks during the day and Mexican specialties Restaurant at night), but in order to provide a good service to our costumers we are going to set up a nice grill and bar for snacks by the pool during the day, until we finish with El Mandarin Restaurant (end of December); other than that the hotel will be ready and offering all the facilities and services that our all inclusive plan offers. Also I would like to comment that we gained a few meters of beach and that is nice for the hotel.

bonjour je viens partager ma mauvaise expérience une de plus! nous n'avons pas pu monter dans l'avion hier pour aller à st Petersbourg nous avion scrupuleusement rempli le document pour notre visa après avoir lu les mauvaises expériences des voyageurs donc a prioris pas de problème le détail qui nous a échapé c'est qu'il est valable si vous arrivez directement à st petersbourg depuis l'espace Schengen ! nous avions une courte escale à Moscou et là ça ne marche pas! voilà donc fini le voyage! bonne année et billet surement pas remboursés nous étions d'après le monsieur qui nous a informé les 50 tiemes personnes depuis lyon sur ces derniers jours ! voilà soyez prudent et je regrette pour economiser un vrai visa de perdre une semaine de r^ève !

Back from two weeks in Karamoja, northeastern Uganda, from Moroto to Kidepo Valley National Park.

A few notes from a few months ago for those who might be interested and whom this area wouldn’t leave indifferent. And rightly so.

First, about access to the region: There have been huge improvements to the infrastructure lately. Although not yet finished, the roadworks have made a big difference, and it’ll be even quicker to get there soon. Currently, allow 8 hours. First from Kampala to Mbale, then from Mbale to Moroto via Soroti. The Jinja to Mbale section is under construction, so that slows things down—count 3.5 to 4 hours from Kampala if there aren’t too many traffic jams on the way out or back. From Mbale to Moroto via Soroti, allow another 4 hours, with only a few kilometers of good dirt road left now that the tarmac is being laid. In a few months, it’ll be done, maybe even sooner.

You can do it in two legs with an overnight in Mbale itself or at Sipi Falls, or go direct. In Mbale, stay at Nurali’s if you really want to keep costs down—also a great spot for Indian food. The vibe is nostalgic, like stepping back in time with granny’s oilcloth table cover (if your granny were Indian). Otherwise, Wash and Wills has a nice pool and a view of the mountains across the way. Lovely garden.

For those who don’t mind driving on dirt roads when it hasn’t rained too much, or who aren’t afraid of taking longer, I’d still recommend going via Nakapiripirit from Mbale. It’s longer, more tiring, and tougher (and if it rains a lot, it can be a real hassle), but wow, is it ever more beautiful. Your call.

Once you arrive in Karamoja, it’s time to enjoy the region you’ve taken the time to reach. So many people only go for Kidepo—what a shame, since the area has so much more to offer. The people are incredibly friendly, and the local culture is so diverse and fascinating.

In Moroto, accommodation options are multiplying like loaves and fishes. At Tita’s, the Karatunga campsite, and of course the institution, Mount Moroto Hotel, which feels a bit stuck in time but is where you’ll find a bit of Moroto’s history. In short, something for every taste and budget. The same goes for meals—you can eat for 5,000 UGX (1.25 €) in local spots or 25,000 UGX (6 €) at the fancier places in town. No risk of going broke here.

Same in Kaabong. From a sleepy little town, it’s slowly but surely moving toward a gentle, steady kind of modernity. There are hotels and guesthouses like Kaabong Resort, which I’d recommend. Forget the name and the appearances—ignore the "Resort" part that’s just there to lure you in. In the end, it’s a cozy little place where you’ll hear both local radio and Madonna’s greatest hits (from the late ‘90s). The staff are welcoming and attentive. They really want to make you happy, and it shows. Here too, you can eat for 5,000 UGX in the village or 15,000–20,000 UGX at the hotels.

Between Moroto and Kaabong, stop in Kotido—more new developments there too. And more guesthouses and restaurants with very reasonable prices. La Maison is a spot that, for the more Francophone among us, will feel like a little taste of France. But Kotido is really worth it for the Karamoja region’s biggest livestock market, held on Wednesdays. Colors, noise, smells—so much joy in being there, right in the middle of all that energy pulsing with the pastoral life of Karamoja. Not a single herder will refuse a photo, proudly sporting the "Karamojong package": a vibrant piece of fabric, a military jacket harking back to the Karamojong’s glorious fighting days, an ostrich-feather hat (or a Guangzhou knockoff), a walking stick, and the dual-purpose stool (for sitting or resting your head, used vertically or horizontally depending on how tired you are and how much local beer you’ve had).

In Moroto, take the local tracks—either across the plains or along the Mount Moroto range. The area is mostly pastoral, with manyattas seeking protection not just from raiders (now rare) but also from grazing animals. On the tracks along the mountains, you’ll cross a few small streams and see some camps for gold prospectors or marble cutters, as well as other geological wonders that are putting pressure on the area from unscrupulous investors. You can also follow the tracks into the valleys to discover the Tepeth villages—more agricultural, more remote, surrounded by unexpected greenery.

KaraTunga can help you explore all this. It’s a local agency I haven’t used myself, but they can provide guides and offer services like mountain hikes or manyatta visits...

Bonjour à tous, je pars en voyage au SL 2 semaines et demie en août. Voici l'itinéraire que j'ai prévu (pour 17 nuits, 18 jours)

Arrivée Negombo : 1 nuit

Triangle Culturel : 4 nuits

Dambulla – Sigiriya : 3 nuits Minneriya National Park : 1 nuit

Côte Est : 6 nuits

Trinquemalay-Negombo : 3 nuits Arugam Bay : 3 nuits

Montagnes Sud : 5 nuits

Ella-Badulla : 3 nuits Kandy : 2 nuits

Retour Negombo : 1 nuit

Que pensez-vous du nombre de nuits, est-ce trop pour certains endroits et pas assez pour d'autres ? Que me conseillez vous comme moyen de transport entre Negombo et Dambulla? Et entre Trinquemalay et Arugam (sachant que je ne compte pas trop perdre de temps sur ce trajet) ? Enfin, pour ce qui est du trajet Ella-Kandy puis Kandy-Colombo le train sera de mise. Le communiqué officiel dit que la compagnie aérienne a été suspendue en attendant confirmation "qu'elle remplit toutes les standards de sécurité de vol".

Certes, pas très explicatif, mais c'est souvent ainsi (je pense que les manquements constatés sont "assez graves").

On 4 February 2018, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) suspended permission for Turkmenistan Airlines to operate services to the European Union. EASA suspended the airline "pending confirmation that it meets international air safety standards", without going into details. Turkmenistan Airlines operates a fleet of 4 Boeing 737-700's, 8 Boeing 737-800's, 3 Boeing 757-200's and 2 Boeing 777-200LR's. European destinations were Frankfurt, Germany; Paris, France; as well as Birmingham and London in the United Kingdom.
