I’m planning a campervan road trip and would love some tips from those who know these countries: Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia again. At the moment, nothing’s set in stone, but for example, is it better to visit Slovenia or Bosnia? My preferences lean toward landscapes (rivers, sea, lakes)—basically anywhere there’s water! :) Wild camping, cheap or even free spots, and a *very* tight budget—it’s the discovery, curiosity, and meeting locals that drive me. I’ll visit cities and sites only if access is easy (by bike, for example, or by train from an affordable campsite) and if visitors aren’t treated like cash cows. Just reasonable stuff, really. So, any advice is welcome—like swimming spots or easy hikes along coasts or rivers. I love caves and offbeat visits (salt mines in Poland, La Roque Saint-Christophe in France, etc.). Hello everyone, My husband and I are planning our honeymoon in Tanzania, hoping to go on a safari and spend a few days in Zanzibar, or even on Mafia Island. We’d like to work with a local agency, both for financial reasons and because we usually travel backpacker-style, adapting activities as we go. Apparently, for safaris, it’s better to plan a bit ahead. We’re thinking of going in September–October 2026. My mother has health issues that could worsen, so I’d like to have a backup plan in case I need to cancel at the last minute. Do you know if credit card insurance covers trips booked with local agencies? Or is there another way to insure it? Have any of you had to cancel a trip last-minute for personal reasons? I’m planning my next trip outside Europe for next year, but unfortunately, I don’t have a choice with the dates—it’s late June to early July. Last year, I went to Japan for three weeks, and it was constantly 36-37°C with over 90% humidity. It wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t impossible either.

For Egypt, I know it’s a period to avoid if possible, but I’m thinking that by the sea, it might be manageable. Otherwise, I’ll consider another destination.

Let me introduce us quickly—I’m Matteo (21, originally from Paris, but I’ve been living near the Pyrenees and the Alps for the past 3 years), and my girlfriend Justine (21, grew up in the Alps). We’re starting to get really fed up with being cooped up and sitting in chairs (yep, we’re studying physics and geography at the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon). So, we’re taking a gap year to make a slightly crazy project happen: hitting the road, meeting people, and most importantly—climbing, skiing, and exploring the mountains!

We’ve always been into the mountains: •🧗‍♂️ 6c-7a/b sport climbing, 6b trad •❄️ Skiing and ice climbing (grade 4/5) •🏔️ Alpine climbing in the Alps (Chamonix, Écrins…) and the Pyrenees—I’m training to become a High Mountain Guide

Our project in a nutshell: •Buying a van (or 4x4) converted in British Columbia around September/October 2025. Ideally, we’d go straight to the US to buy the vehicle there (but reselling might be easier if we buy in Canada). •Heading down to the US to climb at legendary spots like Yosemite, Tuolumne (if it’s too hot), Indian Creek, Moab, and Joshua Tree. •Heading back up to the Canadian Rockies around December for skiing, ice climbing, and winter alpine climbing (might be easier to buy skis there). •Selling the vehicle in Canada at the end of the trip (we need to be back in France by early March 2026 because Justine is preparing for the AMM). I’ve already been to the Rockies, but I want to go back in winter for ice climbing. It’ll probably be too cold to sleep in the van, so we’re hoping to find a small cabin, lodge, or chalet (ideally alone or shared to cut costs). Otherwise, we could work for a month or two at a hostel or something to get free accommodation and earn money to rent a place another month just for climbing. •Visa-wise: we’re hoping to get our Working Holiday Visa (WHV) (still waiting for a response) so we can work there during the trip. For the US, we’ll stay as tourists (no work visa—too complicated and expensive). Any feedback on the WHV or differences from a regular work visa would be great. •With our savings (we’re working in mountain huts this summer), we should be able to buy the van. For daily expenses, I’m hoping to tutor online (math and physics). We live pretty simply and resourcefully: we plan to sleep mostly in the van, cook for ourselves, wash in rivers, and make the most of free nature spots. We’re super motivated, pretty well-rounded when it comes to mountain sports, and we’re not afraid to live simply for a year (we’ve got other projects too: biking to Greece with our climbing gear, a trip to Patagonia for alpine climbing).

Questions and advice: Of course, a road trip like this raises a lot of practical questions. This is our first time embarking on an adventure of this scale, so we’d love to hear your experiences and tips. If any of you have done a long van trip in North America or a WHV in Canada, your insights would be incredibly helpful! Here are some of the questions we’ve got: How do we buy (and later sell) a converted van in British Columbia? We’ll probably land in Vancouver. Is it better to look for a vehicle on online classifieds, Facebook groups, or used car dealerships? Are there any pitfalls to avoid when buying? And for selling it a year later, any tips to make it go smoothly (best time to sell, paperwork, etc.)? What budget should we plan for van life in North America and Canada? If you’ve got any info or feedback on the cost of living in a van in Canada/the US, we’d love to hear it. We’re thinking about expenses like gas (a big one, I imagine!), van maintenance, car insurance, possible tolls, campgrounds or paid spots, etc. We’d like to get an idea of a daily or monthly budget so we’re not too tight. In France, we never stay at campgrounds—we prefer being alone or going where we want. Is that possible in the US and Canada? Any tips for saving money (free camping spots, useful apps…) would be great! Visas, borders, and paperwork: We’re hoping to get a WHV for Canada, but in the US, we’ll be on a tourist visa (90 days max with ESTA, I think). Has anyone combined a WHV in Canada with a trip to the US on the same trip? Anything we should know about crossing the border in a van (insurance, customs, how long we’re allowed in the US, etc.)? We want to avoid any administrative hassles, so any advice on this would be super helpful. Route and seasonality for climbing and skiing: We’re thinking of starting climbing in the US around fall 2025 (probably September/October). Is that the right season for Yosemite, Indian Creek, and Moab? Any must-see spots along the way? For winter, we’re aiming for December to March in the Canadian Rockies (Banff, Jasper, Golden…) for skiing and ice climbing. Any tips on ice climbs or major backcountry skiing spots? We’ve got all our climbing, skiing, and alpine gear—should we bring it all or buy some stuff there? Is the “Wilderness Season Pass” for winter in the Rockies worth it? We came across this pass that offers 7 months of unlimited nights in HI mountain hostels in the Rockies. Has anyone here tried it? Are the dorms usually crowded? Working on the road: To fund the trip, we’re planning to work a bit along the way. Any tips for finding work in Canada while traveling (peak seasons at ski resorts, WWOOFing, odd jobs…)? That’s it for our (many) questions 😅! If you’ve done a similar trip—or even just parts of it (van life, climbing tour, winter in Canada…)—we’d love to hear your experiences, or even if you’re in the area and want to share a few days of climbing. Hello fellow adventurers! :) I’m writing this little message to the community and adventurers because I’m thinking of heading to Morocco (a country I know well) for a week in February (around the 6th or 10th, for about a week) to climb Mount Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains. I’m used to hiking and backpacking, but this would be my first 4,000m peak. I think the mountain landscapes are even more stunning in winter. I know it’s necessary to hire a guide for this ascent. Has anyone here already climbed it in winter? If so, any feedback or tips? We’re planning a week-long trip to Finnish Lapland in February 2026 with two kids aged 7 and 4.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time browsing websites and this forum, but I still have a few questions left.

We’ll be landing in Rovaniemi but won’t be staying there, so we’re planning to rent a car. Do you have any recommendations for rental companies? Is a Golf-sized car sufficient, or should we opt for something better suited to the conditions?

I found some nice accommodations near Akaslompolo. Is the area nice? Are there restaurants, shops, etc.? If it were just me, I’d go for total isolation, but I’m not alone 😎 If not, do you have any alternatives within a 2-hour radius of Rovaniemi? I’d also spotted Luosto.

We’re planning the classic activities: - Visiting a reindeer farm (but no sled ride); - A dog-sledding excursion; - Ice fishing; - A few evenings hunting for auroras using our car and a dedicated app; - A day in Rovaniemi for Santa Claus Village, the Arctic Museum, and the small Ranua Zoo; - An ice hockey game; - And maybe a day of skiing.

Do you have any recommendations for activity providers?

What kind of clothing layers do you recommend for the kids at this time of year?

Is the amethyst mine in Luosto worth it? I think the prices are over the top and can’t figure out why… Maybe there’s a good reason?

Here’s the itinerary I’ve planned for this new trip to Thailand:

Arrival – 2 nights in Bangkok (any hotel recommendations? Very quiet, near Chinatown or by the river)

Train or taxi (which app should I use for Thailand?) to Phetchaburi – 2 nights (any hotel recommendations?)

Daytime train to Surat Thani – 1 night there (any hotel recommendations?)

Pick up the rental car and head to Khao Sok – 1 night there (any hotel recommendations?)

Drive to Ko Kho Khao – 3 nights – relaxation (any hotel recommendations?)

Drive to Phang Nga Bay – 1 night (any base recommendations?)

Excursion in the bay, then drive to Krabi – 2 nights (any hotel recommendations) or any other spot with beautiful, quiet beaches that you might know?

Return to Surat Thani – overnight train to Bangkok, then Ayutthaya (any hotel recommendations?)

Visit the site and transfer to the airport – sniff, time to head back!

If you have other suggestions, keeping in mind the trip’s vibe: beach time without crowds or entertainment, a bit of nature, a bit of culture, no stress... No domestic flights and charming accommodations (not at 150 € per night, even though the budget is reasonable!)

Not sure I’ll follow them all, but all your ideas are welcome! 😉

Hi there, I’m planning to spend a week in Lapland from January 4th to 11th, 2025. It’s one of my dreams that I’ll finally get to fulfill—I’ve only been to the mountains once before, at Les 2 Alpes when I was 19. A turbulent period came to an end around 2022.

Many of us have returned to big trips after making only very small ones—or none at all. For a little anecdote, my dentist told me that due to the lack of travel, a lot of clients treated themselves to implants they would’ve otherwise skipped. The joy of traveling again probably gave some vacationers smiles they hadn’t dared to show before!

Here, you can share what’s on your mind: Have these new, real trips disappointed you, rejuvenated you, or just relieved a long frustration?

For my part, not being so young anymore, there was definitely relief but no explosion of joy. I just had the feeling of picking up the thread of life after a foggy pause, with the bitter taste that 2 or 3 years of my life had been partly stolen from me.

Alors voilà, je suis allée en Islande il y a deux ans au mois de juillet, et prévoit d'y retourner cette année, en juin ou en juillet. J'avais eu la très mauvaise idée lors de mon premier voyage là bas de prendre un matelas gonflable que je posais à même le sol, résultat : j'ai eu super méga froid toutes les nuits, malgré un bon sac de couchage, le matelas prenant la température et l'humidité du sol... Autant vous dire que je voudrais éviter de revivre ça l'été prochain! ^^

Mais voilà, je ne sais pas quelle option choisir : acheter un matelas de camping 4 saisons avec une R-value assez haute (et au prix souvent assez élevé), ou bien acheter un lit de camp qui me permettrait de ne pas dormir à même le sol (type cadre à latte gonflable de chez décathlon par exemple). Je me demande quelle solution sera la meilleure pour être sûre et certaine d'être protégée efficacement du froid...

Y a-t-il parmi vous des gens qui s'y connaissent et qui auraient des conseils, des retours d'expériences et qui m'aideraient dans ma quête? (Je précise que je voyage en ferry avec ma voiture, donc le poids et la taille ne rentrent pas en ligne de compte pour choisir le matériel!)

Je prépare une randonnée pour la dernière semaine de décembre sur le GR10 et me tâte sur l'itinéraire précis à choisir (question enseignement).

J'ai l'habitude avec mon homme de partir en autonomie mais plutôt en conditions estivales (quoique, les iles lofotens en été c'est un peu l'hivers ici, non ? 🙂 ) ! Nous avons fait la partie Hautes pyrénéennes en été (de Saucèdes à Luchon), mais en plein décembre, il va falloir aller chercher des petites hauteurs pour rester presque au sec !

Donc, nous envisageons de partir d'Hendaye, pour rejoindre Esterençuby en 4,5 jours. Il me semble qu'ensuite, à partir de la Foret d'Iraty, le GR10 n, 'est plus praticable avec l'enneigeant de saison. Je suis toutefois un peu déçue de rester si bas et loin des cols. Pour les habitués, et peut-être les résidents, pensez-vous qu'une autre partie du GR10 occidentales soit praticable ? Entre Iraty et Kakouetta ? Ou plus loin ?

N'hésitez pas à me faire vos retours, je suis preneuse de toutes suggestions.

Bonjour à tous et toutes, après avoir lu pas mal de discussions et glané des conseils, je sollicite vos regards experts sur notre trajet. Ce sera notre 2e voyage au japon et cette fois nous amenons nos enfants (11 et 14 ans). Nous arrivons le 20/02 à Tokyo et nous repartons le 7 mars d'Osaka. Le 1er voyage, nous sommes allés à Tokyo et Kyoto et on a un peu rayonné autour (Nara et Kuruma notamment). Pour ce 2e voyage, voici ce qu'on a commencé à prévoir. Nous voyagerons en transports en commun. Nous aimons bien rester qq nuits dans un même endroit et rayonner autour. Merci d'avance pour vos retours et précieux conseils :) - Arrivée à Tokyo le 20 février au soir - 5 nuits à Tokyo - départ pour les Alpes japonaises où nous aimerions passer 2 ou 3 nuits mais difficile de choisir. On a repéré Nozawa Onsen avec balade en raquette , voire ski :) et découverte du monkey parc mais aussi Matsumoto (mais les deux, ça risque d'être compliqué non ?). Faut (il s'arrêter à Nagano ou pas ? - Nous aimerions également aller à Kanazawa et/ou Takayama (idem : est ce qu'il vaut mieux choisir ? et lequel ?) 2 nuits je pense. - Ensuite nous prévoyons de descendre vers le sud. Nous souhaitons finir par Osaka et y passer 2 nuits (ou 3?). Il nous restera donc 4 à 5 nuits. Soit nous allons à Kyoto pour faire découvrir à nos enfants. Soit nous privilégions une autre découverte : Naoshima / Hiroshima et peut être plus de temps à Osaka ? + encore une option à laquelle on pense avant les alpes japonaises : s'arrêter à Hakone ou dans un endroit pour admirer le mont fuji...

Ma compagne et moi (33 et 36 ans) nous souhaitons passer une semaine (celle du nouvel an 2020) à la montagne, je pensais aux Pyrénées car on a passé deux semaines du mois d'aout dernier à Chamonix et on aurai dit d'etre à Disneyland… or c'et justement le contraire que l'on cherche, la tranquillité, les animaux et les calme… On connais bien la montagne « d’été » mais pas celle d'hiver avec neige; on aimerai bien faire de la raquette de neige, ski de fond et peut etre du ski.

Voci donc ma question: Est ce que quelqu’un serait me conseiller un jolie lieu (ou secteur à privilégier) immergé dans la nature (donc dans les Pyrénées) ou pouvoir passer la premier semaine de janvier? Budget logement environ 600/700€ pour deux, préférence pour un chalet ou petit maison, avec cheminée bien sur!! (mais pas d’hotel!!)
