Climate and Weather in Morocco
Climate Overview
The country's diversity, with terrain ranging from sea level to over 4,000 meters in altitude, results in significant climatic variations.
The coastline remains pleasant year-round, with mild summers and agreeable winters (averaging 17 to 26°C depending on the season). The interior, with its continental climate, is more stifling in summer and colder in winter. As for the desert, it should be avoided in summer due to excessive daytime temperatures, which can sometimes exceed 45°C.
Best Time to Visit Morocco
Spring and autumn are good times to visit the interior of Morocco in terms of climate. Along the coast, the pleasant period roughly from April to November can be preferred.

Climate by Region
The Mediterranean Coast
The Mediterranean part of Morocco consists of a coastal area and a mountainous hinterland (the Rif), which is quite lush and can exceed 2,000 meters. The coast offers a typically Mediterranean climate with mild, slightly rainy winters and (pleasantly) hot, dry summers. The mountainous area, however, is much rainier, with snow and low temperatures in some places during winter. Generally, the western part (closer to the Atlantic) is much more humid than the more sheltered east.
The Atlantic Coast
The Atlantic coast is characterized by a "Mediterranean climate with oceanic influences," particularly in terms of precipitation or frequent morning fogs and dews in some areas during summer.
In general, summers are dry and very sunny, with pleasant temperatures softened by the trade winds, though occasionally the thermometer can rise significantly in the more arid south due to Saharan air masses. Winters are also mild, with barely a ten-degree difference in temperature compared to summer months.
The northern coast experiences a rainy season from October to April, while in the south, it is slightly shorter. The further south you go, the lower the precipitation levels; it rains three times as much in the region of Tangier as in that of Agadir.
The Atlas Mountains
The Atlas region is characterized by a mountain climate with snow and low winter temperatures in its center. This is, however, softened by the sea's influence in the north (wetter) and the desert in the south (more arid). Thus, cities like Marrakech or Fez, with their continental climate, have hot to very hot summers and winters with relatively pleasant temperatures.
The Saharan Zone
This area, from the foothills of the Atlas to the gates of the Sahara, has a desert climate influenced by altitude. In the highlands, the climate is slightly less dry and less hot, especially in winter, than in the lower-altitude zones to the south/southeast of the region.
Meanwhile, high summer temperatures, which can easily exceed 40°C, remain a barrier to a pleasant exploration of this part of Morocco in July and August. It’s also worth noting that, regardless of the season, the temperature difference between day and night is around 20°C, so it’s highly recommended to bring warm clothing for the evenings.
Western Sahara
The entire region has a typically desert climate with little to no rainfall and year-round sunshine. While temperatures are bearable on the coast with relatively small temperature variations, the interior is scorching in summer, with daytime temperatures exceeding 40°C in some places, as well as very cool nights, especially in winter.
