FISHING MONGOLIA
Fly-Fishing rivers also include - the Ider, Delgermoron, Bugsei, Selenge and Chuluut Rivers.
Lake fishing includes - Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur (White Lake) - Arkhangai Aimag and
Khovsgol Lake - Khovsgol Aimag.
(There are opportunities for stunning hikes both at White Lake and Lake Khovsgol as well as horse trekking)
Just so you know - to fish in Mongolia you are meant to have a permit. Out-of-the-way rivers are usually unpatrolled - but this does not mean that you don't need a licence. You should not just pitch up and fish - even though people do. If you are fishing within a national park you can obtain a permit from the local national park administration offices. Your best bet is to contact one of the companies that run fishing tours just to make sure what the exact rules and regulations are.
As you probably know Mongolia is vast - the size of Western Europe - and travelling its kilometres can take up time. If you would like to travel independently it is possible to travel by public transport (mini-van) from Ulaan Baatar to Murun (capital town of Khovsgol Aimag - the Delgermoron river flows through Murun and is said to be excellent for fly fishing). You could then travel from Murun to Khatgal (the small town at the south of Lake Khovsgol). By visiting Lake Khovsgol you could be relatively independent and still achieve all that you would like within your time frame.
The area is Khovsgol Nuur National Park - known as both the Blue Pearl of Mongolia and Dalai Ej (Mother Sea). It is located within the Siberian taiga - an area of alpine meadows and forest steppe. Within Khatgal there are many small Mongolian owned ger camps and travel operators - recomended to me is MS Guesthouse (but of course there are others - maybe look for reports on this forum). The ger camp /travel operator should be able to help you with your fishing permit and from this base you would be able to organise a horse trek, hiking (the Khoridol Saridag mountains are stunning) and of course you could fish to your hearts content.
Please be aware that Khovsgol is an incredibly fragile environment of international importance - just check to see how responsible the ger camp / travel operator is regarding protecting the environment.
