Trick to the FOL passes is this - buy regular passes, go inside. If its really crowded, you can upgrade your passes - just ask any employee where to go to do this. If you upgrade, the total you pay is the same as if you'd bought FOL passes to begin with. So, doing this costs you nothing, and this way you only pay the extra money if you feel the crowds and the lines warrant doing so. The only (slight) risk is that they only sell a certain number of FOL passes each day, so if you don't buy them initially there's a very slight chance they won't sell you them later, but for the most part this is a sound strategy to use.Im not sure the "selling out" of Front of the Line Passes would be a worry except at a very few extremely busy times in the year. I think mostly its just a ploy on Universals part to get you to purchase them before your visit. I dont think you would need them for you date even though it will likely be busy.
