Second trip to Japan: what itinerary for July-August?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning another trip to Japan next July-August (three and a half to four weeks). We were lucky enough to visit the country back in 2012 and explored Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, and Miyajima Island.

This time, we’d like to spend a few days in Tokyo again and then discover other regions and cities. I really want to see Himeji Castle and Naoshima Island, but I haven’t decided on the rest yet.

Since we’ll be in Japan mostly in July (three weeks) and a bit in August (first week), I’m also thinking about the weather, which seems more favorable in the north (northern Honshu and Hokkaido), though the south (Shikoku, Kyushu) is tempting too.

I’d love to hear your advice on an itinerary, keeping in mind that we love variety—some history, temples, nature, and big cities.

Hello,

I recommend checking out the Japan National Tourism Organization website; search for "JNTO".

Best regards,

René

Hi there,

I know the site well, but I was hoping for some firsthand experiences from travelers on the forum.

Sorry! So many people don’t know this and rely on, let’s say... not-so-reliable sources.

It’s a bit bold to come here criticizing when you’ve only been registered for a few days and haven’t posted anything constructive or actually helpful to travelers.

Delseve, I’m thrilled to read that you’re interested in Kyushu. If you have any questions about the island, don’t hesitate!

I don’t have experience traveling in July/August, but this topic has been discussed many times on this forum and on *Le Routard*. Checking out previous threads might give you some answers. Plus, everyone’s sensitivity to heat and humidity varies, so it’s hard to give an absolute answer. Personally, I visited the north (Tohoku) in September, and the humidity was high—I can’t imagine how it’d be in August—but air conditioning provides essential relief between visits, not to mention the water vending machines everywhere. Near the coast, the breeze probably helps with the heat. Adjusting your visiting hours is definitely a good tip for this time of year.

For areas to explore, I’ve seen a bit of the north (Tohoku) and the south (Shikoku and Kyushu), and both regions offer great discoveries. That said, if Himeji and Naoshima interest you, combining them with Shikoku could be a logical and exciting choice. This year, I explored a new part of Shikoku (here’s my travel journal in progress if you’re interested for the Ehime and Kochi prefectures, and check the links in my profile (first journal) for Kagawa and Tokushima). The island has beautiful spots to discover. You can even go swimming—the sea is clear and blue. Some areas are great for snorkeling too.

Kyushu is just as interesting. A mix of both is also possible; for example, a ferry connects Shikoku (Ehime Prefecture) to Beppu.

Read up on threads about the areas you’re interested in and come back with a more detailed itinerary.

Thanks for this info. The idea is to figure out the best route for us, considering it’s our second trip and the timing is set for us. We’re still planning and I’d love to hear about your experiences.
