Hello everyone, We’re heading to South America in February 2020 for our first three-month trip and plan to return in 2021 for another three-month adventure. We’ll be shipping our Toyota with a fitted camper (Azalaï) in a container. We chose Wave Logistics for the transport based on the tips we read here on the forum. At the end of this first trip, around mid-May 2020, we’d like to find a secure spot near Santiago, Chile, where we can leave our vehicle for about eight months. We’ve done this before in Zambia (two trips to Southern Africa in 2016 and 2017, leaving our Azalaï for eight months at a campsite near Lusaka) and we’d love to repeat the experience in South America. Can anyone help us out or point us in the right direction?

Hi there, Your deal might work out. Not in Santiago, but 3,000 km to the north, near MOQUEGUA, Peru. I’m retired, a Peruvian resident since 2015. I live in the desert, in CLEMESI. On Google Earth, search for "cruz misionera"—you’ll find a solar panel field, and next to it, the village. I’m building my house and a garage, so I can size it to actually host a camper van. I even think this could become a little business around here. Please contact me via private message. Cheers.

Hi Roger, thanks for your reply. I’m afraid it might be too far from Chile since we’re planning to return in 2021 and continue exploring the continent starting from Chile and heading north to finish in Peru... but we’ll look into the routes for the second trip. You mentioned you’re going to build, but we’d need to leave our camper van by mid-May 2020... would your garage be ready by then? Best regards, Cathy

Hi there, You know, here we're far from administrative hassles. If I decide to build the garage, it's a 2-week job. It's more the dimensions that are worrying me. But I think a height of 3 m, width of 4 m, and length of 8 m should do the trick. I'm 200 km from the Chilean border, though—getting to Santiago is another story entirely. Wishing you a successful search.

Hi Roger,

We're interested in your offer. Our vehicle is 5.20 m long, 1.90 m wide, and 2.50 m high. It would be from around May 15, 2020, to about mid-February 2021. What would you charge per month? Could you tell me which international airport is closest to you? Lima? Could you also clarify where exactly you're located? Thanks! Cathy

Hi there, I know your post is 5 years old, but we’d like to visit Latin America in two trips, leaving our vehicle in storage in Chile. Could you share any addresses for safekeeping? And would it be possible to know your itinerary with stops, since we’re planning two trips of 2 to 2.5 months each (similar to what you did)? Our starting point: Montevideo (Uruguay), and our endpoint somewhere in northern Chile or Bolivia—? For the return trip, where did you come back from (cargo)? Sorry for all these questions! Thanks in advance for your replies. Best regards, Noëlle and Florent

Hi there, We still have a vehicle in storage in Uruguay. We go there once a year for about 8 to 10 weeks. It’s easier to leave it in Uruguay because the TIP is valid for one year, whereas in other countries it’s usually only 3 months. In 2020, we were stopped by Covid and had our vehicle repatriated from Valparaíso in Chile. In a private message, I can try to share our 2020 itinerary (I used Travelmap back then).

We shipped our vehicle again in 2023 to Montevideo, and it’s still there. So far, we’ve traveled all over Argentina and all of Chile. In October, we’ll be exploring southern Brazil and the Pantanal. Our itineraries since 2023 are on Polarsteps, but they’re not public. If you give me an email address, Messenger, or WhatsApp, I can send you a Polarsteps link to our trips.

In 2023, we left our vehicle in a small garage in Santiago for a good month before picking it up. I can give you the address. I’m currently traveling and don’t have the details with me, but I can send them to you in two weeks.

In Uruguay, our vehicle is at UY Storage, about 50 km from Montevideo. I recommend the IOverlander app—it’s super helpful for lots of info, including storage (but not just that).

Don’t hesitate to get back in touch. Cathy

Hi there, Thanks a million! I just found your reply in my spam folder! That’s awesome info—really appreciate it! Here’s my WhatsApp number: Noëlle 0769600790 My email: nolou6@gmail.com I’d love to see your 2020 itinerary—I’ve also been asking ChatGPT for ideas.
