Hi, I’m renting a car in Greece (Heraklion). Should I get extra insurance? What’s driving like with the Greeks? Thanks for any tips!

Hi Alain

Greeks drive... in their own way! Especially in Crete. Overall, the rules of the road are respected, but don’t be surprised to see them encroach on the emergency lane so you can overtake them, for example. The insurance extension isn’t necessarily useful, but if it puts your mind at ease, go for it!

Have a great holiday! Elenitsa

Hi Alain,

From a tourist’s perspective, I’ll add that drivers here tend to stop pretty much anywhere (to drop someone off, run an errand, chat, etc.), and stop signs are often replaced with yield signs (I even wondered if our "stop" signs exist in Greece at all 🤪). But overall, driving feels pretty relaxed, I think.

As for extra insurance, I never get it—my credit card coverage seems to be enough (I’ve tested it twice over nearly 20 years with two different banks, but only for small amounts, and it worked out fine).

Thanks! I’ll go with the ‘basic’ option.
