Hi there, we're traveling in April with our 4-year-old child. We'll be spending a few days in Clarens and would then like to visit Hluhluwe. We don’t want to drive more than 3–4 hours a day, and the driving time is estimated at nearly 7 hours. Do you have any suggestions for a stopover and an Airbnb or guest house (safe town, nature) between Clarens and Hluhluwe where we could spend the afternoon and leave the next day, as well as a safe route? Thanks so much!

Hi there, Even though there are several possible routes, the safest one for you will still be the main national road. Head due south, then due east, then try to find a ride. Maybe around Umhlanga? I’ll admit that either I don’t take that road or I don’t stop there.

Good evening, You didn’t mention where you’re heading after Hluhluwe. If you’re continuing north, Michel’s suggested route—though longer—makes sense because it lets you follow the coastline at the end of the connecting leg. That said, Umhlanga isn’t really a nature/secure stopover. I prefer the direct route, due east, which is rich in historical sites and takes you through the heart of the country. If you go with that option, Ladysmith or Dundee are pleasant stops with some great ‘typical’ spots in the area.

Good evening, thank you for your reply. We were planning to go to St Lucia after Hluhluwe. I’ll check out Ladysmith and Dundee. Does the town of Vryheid seem interesting to you? Have a good evening.

Good evening,

Does the town of Vryheid seem interesting to you?

The problem is that every town in this country seems interesting to me. 😉

Vryheid is typical of this region. Its history is rich. It’s a small town—perfect for a stopover and a walking tour. But it’s more about how you split your time that’ll help you choose between Ladysmith, Dundee, and Vryheid for the stop.

While this family didn’t fare well in the northern hemisphere, from Vryheid to Saint Helena, the southern hemisphere didn’t treat them much better either. 😇
