KLM: rerouted without notice!

Hi there,

This afternoon I had a flight at 5:10 PM to Amsterdam from Nice (final destination: Berlin). I arrived at the airport a little before 3:00 PM and saw that the flight was now leaving at 6:30 PM. I went to the counter to point out that I wouldn’t have time to make my connection, and they told me I’d be spending the night in Amsterdam.

When the agent checked her computer, she saw that I’d been put on a flight with another airline and asked if I hadn’t received an email.

In the end, I had to change terminals and leave at 7:05 PM with Swiss Airlines, then Air Baltic.

Just to clarify, I checked in less than 24 hours ago for both KLM flights (Nice-Amsterdam and Amsterdam-Berlin) where I had seats assigned. I checked my emails carefully, and I was never notified!

Luckily, the Swiss Airlines flight left later—otherwise, at 3:00 PM, I wouldn’t have had time to check in (I have a checked bag), and I don’t know how I would’ve proven I never got an email. Also, thankfully, I went to the counter much earlier than planned for the 6:30 PM departure.

In the end, I was lucky because with KLM, I would’ve lost a whole day. And it’s a good thing I always travel for at least two full weeks because I’ve often lost a day due to delays—I wouldn’t do that for a week or a weekend getaway...

This is the first time this has happened to me, but there’s a first time for everything!

Now I’ve got seats on Swiss and Air Baltic and I’m hoping I’ll make it to Berlin today....

Hi Marie,

Actually, they were quicker than you—once they anticipated that KL1477 would be very delayed, that you wouldn’t make your connection in Schiphol, or that the flight to Berlin would be canceled or heavily delayed anyway, they rerouted you. Even outside the alliance, which was pretty nice of them. I think Schiphol is total chaos right now, maybe due to a broken baggage conveyor and a backlog of luggage. That’s what I gathered, at least.

Michel

PS: Your KL1785 to Berlin was canceled anyway.

Hi Michel,

That makes more sense now!

I couldn’t figure out how I ended up on a Swiss flight today around 3:15 PM when I checked in with KLM after 4:00 PM yesterday!

But I’m still not in Berlin—the flight at 7:05 PM is 10 minutes delayed, and other flights are running late too (to Istanbul, Munich, Lisbon). No idea why, and there aren’t many people at Nice Airport.

I noticed Eurowings has a direct flight (no delays so far!), so next time I won’t book a connecting flight—it’s too much of a hassle!

Your KL1785 from Amsterdam to Berlin was canceled anyway. The hassle was avoided—if you ask me, there was really good management and quick responsiveness. Your LX 561 will be on time; to put your mind at ease, you can track LX 560, which is heading to Nice—it’s scheduled to depart at 17:20. If it sticks to that time, you’re all set! 🙂.

Two hours ago, it still wasn’t canceled; I think I wasn’t the only one still heading to Berlin.

Actually, I lost a day of vacation—luckily, my hotel was cancelable until 6:00 PM.

The direct Eurowings flight to Berlin has finished boarding and will leave on time.

My flight, on the other hand, is 20 minutes late. I had a 40-minute window for my connection in Zurich—this is gonna be tight!

Lesson learned: for me, no more connecting flights if there’s a direct option. If I end up spending the night in Zurich, I’ll lose a night at my Berlin hotel, and a night in Berlin isn’t cheap!

And I’ve spent the whole afternoon at Nice Airport....

My flight, on the other hand, is 20 minutes late, and I only had 40 minutes for my connection in Zurich—this is gonna be tight!

I think it’ll be okay.

Moral of the story: for me, no more layovers if there’s a direct flight. If I have to spend the night in Zurich, I lose a night at my Berlin hotel, and a night in Berlin isn’t cheap!

The night they’d offer you in Zurich is definitely more expensive than the night you might lose in Berlin. Plus, how did you book that night in Berlin?

For now, everything’s fine—no reason to stress! 🙂

It's LX561 then the flight to Berlin departing at 21:00? That's impossible. Which flight?

I finally made it to Berlin, in the middle of the night and in the fog!

Flight 561 arrived in Zurich at 8:30 PM. I ran, and by 8:45 PM, I was on the bus taking us to the Swiss plane—it was indeed flight 962, which was supposed to leave at 9:00 PM and ended up departing nearly 30 minutes late.

On the flight to Zurich, the flight attendants told me I had plenty of time. The flight was almost empty, and they even let me sit right at the front of economy. So if I had missed my connection, I guess they wouldn’t have taken any responsibility.

Anyway, I’ve never had such last-minute changes (at the airport): terminal change in Nice, airline change after check-in, layover city switch, and of course, schedule changes. I feel like I’ve traveled to the ends of the earth!

And on the boarding pass, it said the second flight was operated by Air Baltic, which wasn’t the case.

For the return trip in two weeks—assuming nothing else goes wrong—it’s the same route via Amsterdam. Thankfully, just in case, I’m flying back on a Sunday even though I don’t go back to work until Tuesday...

Hi there,

Glad to hear you arrived safely, and just in time before Berlin’s 11:30 PM curfew.

they told me to sit all the way at the front of economy, so if I’d missed my connection, I guess they wouldn’t have taken responsibility.

Actually, you *would* have been taken care of in Zurich if it had become necessary.

And on the boarding pass, it said the second flight was operated by Air Baltic, but that wasn’t the case.

The crew *should* have been Air Baltic, but the plane was a Swiss aircraft in Star Alliance colors, I believe. Swiss leases planes to Air Baltic—and sometimes crews too.

Enjoy your stay in Berlin!

In the end, I arrived pretty much at the same time as if I’d gone via Amsterdam since I had to wait in Amsterdam, whereas in Zurich I didn’t have to wait—I even had to run.

The curfew in Berlin—does that mean no planes land in Berlin after 11:30 PM? That’s why all the airport shops were closed; it surprised me in a big city like Berlin.

Otherwise, if the flight attendants tell me I’ve got time to make my connection and I miss it, I don’t see how they’d cover anything at all?

Hi,

Otherwise, if the flight attendants tell me I have time to make my connection and I miss it, I don’t see how they would have covered anything?

Cabin crew have no role in any potential compensation for a passenger who misses their connection. You would have gone to the "Customer Contact Center" at Zurich Airport, where it would have been confirmed that between the delay of the flight from Nice and the closing of the Berlin flight’s doors, there wasn’t a reasonably sufficient amount of time.

Most European airports are nearly deserted after 10 PM, Berlin included.

Hi there,

I had my return flight at 12:00 PM with KLM via Amsterdam, and when I arrived at the airport, I saw that the flight was canceled due to weather conditions in Amsterdam (snow and wind)!

In the end, I left at 2:00 PM with Lufthansa via Frankfurt.

I didn’t receive any email from KLM, and at the airport, they told us to call or email KLM. It was only by going on the website that I saw the flight change (they also mentioned that the phone line was overwhelmed). I often travel with Iberia, and they always send an email for even the slightest change to the flight.

Flights to London and Stockholm were also canceled.

Luckily, I go back to work on Tuesday, so if my flight gets canceled again, I still have one more vacation day....

Hi Marie,

Your 1776 has been canceled every day since January 2nd. Lots of delays and cancellations in Amsterdam, actually, even though the current conditions don’t really mention wind or snow: light rain or snow, 10 knots of wind, 8 km visibility... https://metar-taf.com/fr?c=516092.47296.9&hl=EHAM But likely a preventive cancellation to ensure the safety of ongoing operations. https://www.air-journal.fr/2026-01-04-amsterdam-schiphol-paralyse-par-la-neige-295-vols-de-klm-annules-ce-dimanche-5271643.html Frankfurt’s also seeing quite a few delays.

Every day since January 2nd? Because of the weather conditions?

I didn’t realize snow could cause such a mess in Europe... anyway, they could’ve sent an email!

In Berlin, the snow’s sticking around—there’s snow everywhere—but it’s not snowing anymore. There’s a beautiful blue sky. For Frankfurt, I don’t know what the weather’s like.

My flight is 0189. I hope I’ll make it to Nice today....

Every day since January 2nd? Because of the weather conditions?

That’s what I mentioned earlier—it’s a flight that’s easy to cancel to reduce constraints, so they canceled it as a precaution.

I didn’t think snow could cause such chaos in Europe... at least they could’ve sent an email!

You always have to check the websites or apps.

LH0189 was four hours late yesterday, but sometimes it’s better not to know ;) For now, it’s scheduled almost on time.

Last night I checked my emails just in case, but I didn’t think to check the KLM website, and I didn’t check in since I had done it for the outbound flight—and once I arrived at the airport, they changed my airline.

Anyway, the important thing is that my flight leaves Berlin on time so I can make my connection in Frankfurt.

If I come back to Berlin, I think I’ll take a direct flight with Eurowings—that way I’ll avoid all these issues in Amsterdam.

Okay, I’m going to walk around the airport. I don’t think it’s very big for a city like Berlin.

Yesterday’s Eurowings EW8426 Berlin–Nice flight was nearly three hours late, but today it’s only showing a one-and-a-half-hour delay… so far 😏. Berlin isn’t a true hub—it’s a major German airport, but not on the same level as Frankfurt or Munich.

Michel
SI Sinforosa Veteran ·
I think a lot of flights must’ve left late yesterday because it snowed pretty much all day, right into the evening and maybe even overnight.

Right now, I’ve got a great view of the runways at Berlin Airport, and everything’s white as far as the eye can see (though the runways themselves are clear).

The sky isn’t blue anymore—I really hope it doesn’t start snowing heavily again...

Either way, with a direct flight, you avoid a lot of hassle.

Here’s a photo I took yesterday around noon at Alexanderplatz. You couldn’t see much—it was snowing pretty hard—so I can only imagine the chaos at the airport.

Right now, there’s an orange machine clearing the snow, they’ve changed the boarding gate, and I don’t have a full view anymore.

You can see the vehicles in the foreground are covered in a thick layer of snow.

In any case, a direct flight really cuts down on the hassle.

If it's the low-cost branch of an airline or a true low-cost carrier, the chances of being efficiently rerouted are much lower than what you're currently doing. If the Eurowings flight is canceled, I assume they’ll offer you something else, but it’ll be less straightforward and more unpredictable. Your LH1089 is showing a good half-hour delay on arrival.

Well, I'm about to board, but I think we're leaving 20 minutes late. Hope I'll make my connection in Frankfurt.

Anyway, I think all flights to Amsterdam are canceled today.

Yeah, with a low-cost airline it might've been worse....

I landed in Frankfurt and now I’m waiting for my flight to Nice.

When the flight arrived, there was someone with a tablet directing us to our connections.

Frankfurt Airport is way bigger than Berlin’s—my departure gate was far from where I landed. It’s a pretty nice airport with some comfy chairs to relax in, video game rooms, a plane that doubles as a slide for kids, etc. They even make announcements in French!

No snow at all in Frankfurt (just a little on the surrounding hills), unlike Berlin, where the whole landscape was white.

Fingers crossed I’ll make it to Nice tonight.

Apparently, a lot of flights were canceled today across Europe. In Nice, I met some French travelers who had just arrived from Poland, but their Nice-Nantes flight was canceled. They didn’t understand why, since the weather conditions were worse in Poland than in Nice. Other people had their flights canceled too.

Hi,

All of this is anticipated; given the forecasts, the number of flights is limited, and cancellations are made to meet this "specification" or these forecasts. After that, some airports are equipped and used to it, while others are less so, with planes delayed here and there, making them unavailable for the next flight. Planes that may or may not be replaced, the next flight delayed or canceled. Yesterday, the flight that was supposed to pick you up in Berlin from Lyon was canceled, and another plane was assigned to your flight to Frankfurt because it was deemed necessary, authorized, and a priority. Passengers only see the surface of things.

Hi there,

I just found KLM’s email in my spam folder—sent on January 3rd, the day before my departure—to let me know the flight was canceled due to weather conditions in Amsterdam.

I thought it was weird I hadn’t gotten any email, and now I know why.

Anyway, at the airport yesterday, there was a Chinese family who also had no idea the flight was canceled.
