Nous partons du 11 au 31 juillet 2013 dans l'ouest américain. 2 adultes (mari et femme) et 2 enfants (15 et 12 ans). Arrivé à San Francisco et départ de Los Angeles.
Les billets d'avion : réservation OK
Les hôtels : réservation OK
A présent je m'attaque à la location de voiture !!! Nous souhaiterions un SUV type Ford escape
J'ai lu sur le forum la mésaventure de certain qui ont réservé un véhicule et qui reçoivent ensuite un mail pour leur signaler que cette catégorie n'est plus dispo !!!
J'ai donc fait plusieurs simulations sur : elocationdevoiture, autoeurope, locationdevoiture, autoescape... j'ai trouvé des offres de SUV par exemple chez Alamo, ensuite je suis donc allé voir directement sur le site Alamo et là oh surprise, pas de proposition de SUV !!!!!!!
Mes questions :
Est-ce que vous pensez que si je réserve sur les sites d'intermédiaires il n'y aura pas de problèmes de disponibilité ?
Est-ce que vous me confirmez qu'en tant qu'épouse je peux conduire sans supplément de prix ?
Est-ce que vous me confirmez qu'il n'y a pas de frais d'abandon entre SF et LA ?
Notre préférence va à "locationdevoiture.fr" puisque tout est compris avec le pack prenium, location via "sunny cars" vos commentaires (688 € pour 17jrs) ?
J'attends le retour de vos expériences ?
Je viens de vérrifier et pour tout le mois de juillet aucune possibilité de choisir un SUV et pour juin c'est dispo, il est fort possible qu'il n'y ait plus de disponibilité peut être temporaire.
Je te confirme que le 1er conducteur aditionnel est gratuit en californie et qu'il n'y a aucun frais de drop off entre SFO et LA

Tu peux toujours faire ta réservation chez locationdevoiture, il n'y a pas de frais en cas d'annulation, tu peux aussi faire ta réservation par téléphone, ton interlocuteur pourra peut être te dire en temps réel la disponibilité du véhicule.

Entre temps je suis passer dans une agence de voyage a coté de chez moi. Voici leur proposition : Voiture Toyota rave 4 ou similaire du 14 juillet au 31 juillet (soit 17 jrs) avec les mêmes options que locationdevoitre 817 euro soit 129 euro de plus (leur marge j'imagine).
Je pense que nous allons opter pour cette solution (je me sens plus en confiance).
Dommage de ne pas avoir eu, pour l'instant d'autres avis des forumeurs.
Je me laisse la semaine pour décider.

Ton agence de voyage ou locationdevoiture passent par le même système informatique de réservation de véhicules. Même en passant par ton agence tu n'as aucune certitude d'avoir un SUV à ton arrivée, tu seras upgradé vers la gamme supérieure en cas d'indisponibilité.

Oui la fille a l'agence ne m'a rien caché sur leur système de réservation (courtier en assurance, idem certain sur internet). Par contre elle m'a garantie la dispo de ce type de véhicule. A son écran lorsque c'est dispo ça s'affiche en vert sinon ça lui met "en attente de confirmation". Pour la catégorie Toyota rave 4 ou similaire a mes dates s'était vert.
Sur tes conseils et ceux de Leeloo75, je vais retourner sur elocation et locationdevoiture, je vais essayer de faire un comparatif concernant les différentes options, sinon je vais les appeler pour plus de renseignements.

Comme vous, je regarde pour louer un véhicule pour cet été, en aout. Il y a en revanche pour mes recherches des différences de prix assez importantes entre elocationdevoiture.fr - hertz - avis- budget....
Pour le moment c'est Rentalscar et elocationdevoiture qui restent les plus compétitifs...
J'ai qq questions d'ailleurs, est ce vraiment moins chers lorsque l'on réserve sa voiture en même temps que ses billets d'avion ???

J'ai une question, prends-tu un SUV car vous avez prévu de la piste ou pour le confort. Dans le 2e cas, si des SUV mid siz (type rav 4 ou ford escape) ne sont pas disponibles, tu auras la gamme au dessus soit full SUV ou berline luxe ce qui en soit ne pause pas de problème.
Pour le Ford Escape, voiture que j'ai eu lors de mon dernier voyage, c'est une bonne voiture, spacieuse et confortable. Possibilité de mettre pas mal de bagages dans le coffre. Elle consomme pas mal en revanche et attention la notre était un 2X4 et on un 4X4 ce qui peut poser problème sur certain site avec passage de sable notamment.
D'ailleurs, c'est à SF que j'avais eu cette voiture (bleue pétante 😉). J'en profite pour te dire qu'au carcenter de SFO tu n'as pas toujours le choix de ta voiture. Au desk on nous avait attribué une voiture, qui ne nous plaisait pas d'ailleurs (beaucoup de km) au sous-sol on est tombé sur une femme super sympa qui nous a laissé choisir notre voiture dans la gamme SUV. Cependant, nous avons voyagé en mai; je ne suis pas sûr qu'en juillet ils te laissent le choix.
Lors de mes voyages dans l'ouest, je passe toujours par autoescape. Je n'ai jamais eu de problème et le callcenter est vraiment bien. Je te suggère de les appeler, ils sont très compétents.
Pour cet été j'ai hésité entre elocationdevoiture et locationdevoiture, elocation était moins cher mais au niveau assurances c'était en dessous. Pour pouvoir comparer j'ai été obligé de les appeler, ils ont répondu à toutes mes questions sans problème et n'ont pas essayé de me forcer à réserver.
Par contre une chose très importante à savoir c'est que pour elocation pour avoir la possibilité d'annuler il faut payer la totalité de la location et parfois on ne te laisse pas le choix en te faisant payer qu'un acompte, il faut alors faire la réservation par téléphone.

Rentalcars et elocation c'est la même société je pense que tu voulais parler de locationdevoiture 😛.
Le seul conseil que je pourrai te donner c'est de bien comparer les options entre chaque et surtout faire une réservation avec possibilité d'annulation, une promo jusqu'à ton départ peut arriver.
D'après mon expérience, certains me contrediront peut être, un véhicule n'est jamais en réservation ferme, sauf peut être chez Hertz.
En effet, tu réserves une catégorie et "souvent" lorsque tu arrives, tu choisis ce qui est disponible ou tu attends un retour de véhicule qui te convienne.

Nous avons choisi un SUV après consultation du forum, et surtout consultation du road trip de Sebangel (qui nous a décidé à partir de nous même, et non pas par TO). Donc plus pour le confort, la place et pourvoir faire Monument Valley sans trop de difficulté.
Effectivement en Juillet nous n'auront peu être pas trop le choix, en prenant la voiture un dimanche matin j'espère qu'il n'y aura pas trop de monde.
Pour ce qui est d'autoescape, les options ne sont pas très clair, ou je n'ai peut être pas bien lu en détail. Sur vos conseils à tous (encore merci) je vais les (elocationdevoiture, autoeurope, locationdevoiture, autoescape) reprendre un part un et essayer de les comparer sur papier en faisant des colonnes inclus ou non inclus.
si j'ai tout suivi, vous prendrez le véhicule au centre ville de SFO le 14/7 ?
Je vous conseille vivement de retourner le prendre à l'aéroport....beaucoup plus de choix en plus en étant sur place choisissez d'y arriver avant la majorité des avions internationaux .....(trajet en BART environ 9$)

Nous arrivons a SF le jeudi 11 juillet mais nous avons effectivement l'intention de prendre la voiture à l'aéroport de SF le dimanche dans la matinée. Très bonne remarque pour les avions internationaux, je me note de regarder les horaires avant notre départ.
Je sais que certain sont pour avoir la voiture à SF et d'autres contre. Nous avons fait le choix d'être sans voiture. Je dois creuser encore mais je crois qu'il existe des billets transport pour 3 et 5 jours (Bus, Bart, Cable), en plus nous pensons louer des vélos pour traverser le golden gate et revenir en bateau, mais tout ça c'est pour un travail de recherche un peu plus tard. Pour l'instant je me concentre sur la location de voiture.
Si tu prends le city pass, les transports "muni" dont le cable car (5$ l'aller simple par personne, ça va vite ...) mais pas le métro (de mémoire), sont inclus. Très pratique, mais il faut le rentabiliser...

PAS de frais d'abandon.
ps / refuse toutes les assurances que le loueur sur place va vouloir te refiler . et rends le vehicule reservoir vide.

concernant elocationdevoiture, je vais rappeler. La charmante dame que j'ai eu m'a dit qu'il n'y avait pas de franchise aux USA, hors chez tous les loueurs ils parlent de rachat de franchise !!!

Pour les franchises, ce que j'ai cru comprendre : aux USA, on est tous risques sans franchise en cas d'accident responsable ou pas, mais se sont les "à côtés" qui peuvent ne pas être couverts selon le loueur : bas de caisses, vitres, pare brise, etc ... Les cartes bancaires "Premium" couvrent ces dégats, sauf la Visa Premier qui ne couvre pas si c'est un 4x4 (et un 4x4 ce peut tout simplement être un Ford Escape, donc un SUV familiale, mais du moment qu'il est en 4 roues motrices, c'est un 4x4, même s'il n'a pas vocation à faire du Tous Terrains).
Ensuite, ce qu'il manquerait à ton tableau (mais ça reste une super initiative, merci!) c'est le plafond de couverture de la Responsabilité Civile. En effet, certains loueurs limitent au minimum légal de l'état et proposent en option une couverture élargie à 1M$, ou plus. Selon la durée de location, ça peut faire une somme non négligeable.
En parlant de voiture de location, vous recommandez de l'avoir durant le sejour à SFO ou pas ?
J'ai pris un hôtels sur Lombard Street, le Chelsea Motor Inn qui a un parking gratuit et j'ai prévu de louer ma voiture dés l'aéroport. Je trouvais cela plus simple, que de se trimbaler les valises ds les transports...
Est ce la galère pour se garer ensuite dans la ville. Sachant que je ne sortirai pas ts les jours avec.
Perso je trouve bien de l'avoir pour bouger comme on veut.
Bref, je sais pas trop, sachant que de l'avoir à SFO rallonge le temps de location et la différence de prix est non négligeable (60 à 100 euros de plus) pour 3 jours de loc en plus, sur un total de 24 jours de location
Si le parking est gratuit: ne t'en prive pas! Le taxi de l'éroport au centre ville c'est déjà plus de 50$. Tu auras aussi la voiture pour aller faire un tour vers Sausalito. LA diff"rence de prix est alors largement amoindrie!
Par contre, tu la laisseras à l'hôtel tout le temps où vous serez sur SF: voiture inutile.
Voilà ça y est c'est fait, j'ai réservé et nous avons bien reçu notre voucher.
Nous avons fait le choix de prendre la solution avec pack prenium de locationdevoiture.fr via sunny cars et pour finir chez Alamo.
Concernant le plafond de la couverture responsabilité civil, tous à 1 millions sauf locationdevoiture à 7,5 millions.

Encore plus si tu es limité à 3 conducteurs additionnels, il faut bien qu'ils apparaissent sur le contrat de location pour éviter qu'un 4ème ne conduise.
De ce que m'a expliqué le service client (elocationdevoitures et locationdevoitures), en californie le 1er conducteur additionnel serait gratuit et il doit obligatoirement présenter son permis à la prise en charge du véhicule pour être marqué sur le contrat.
Je n'ai aucun écrit juste une explication orale donc je m'en méfie.
C'est bien indiqué dans le site HERTZ, qui pour une fois est tres precis pour ce qui concerne les conditions de location.
L'epouse est conducteur agréé automatiquement. elle n'a pas besoin de presenter son permis.
Par contre toutes les autres personnes doivent presenter leur permis pour etre agréés, meme si c'est gratuit. (et chez Hertz, il n'y a pas de limite de nombre)
Conducteurs agréés
Les conducteurs agréés de plus de 25 ans sont automatiquement couverts par le contrat de location.
Les conducteurs agréés sont les suivants :
- L'employeur, l'employé ou collègue s'il s'agit d'une location professionnelle (c'est-à-dire si la réservation porte un numéro de CDP société).
- L'époux/se du client pour une réservation avec prise en charge en Californie, dans l'Iowa.
- Les conducteurs agréés n'ont pas besoin d'être présents à la prise en charge.
- Aucun frais supplémentaire ne sera facturé pour les conducteurs agréés.
Conducteurs agréés additionnels
- Les personnes qui ne sont pas automatiquement couvertes par le contrat de location en tant que conducteurs agréés (mentionnés ci-dessus) doivent être approuvées par Hertz après avoir rempli le formulaire de conducteur additionnel. Une vérification de leur permis de conduire sera effectuée. Les conducteurs additionnels peuvent être ajoutés sur le contrat de location à tout moment lors de la location et dans n'importe quelle agence de location.
- Le client et chaque conducteur additionnel doivent être présents lors de la signature du contrat de location. Ils doivent présenter une carte de crédit ou à débit immédiat (si elles sont acceptées dans la ville de prise en charge) à leur nom, ou un billet aller-retour en cours de validité (avion, train ou bus) et présenter leur permis de conduire en cours de validité et doivent être âgés de plus de 20 ans. Pour les conducteurs âgés de 20 à 24 ans, la surcharge jeune conducteur s’appliquera.
Bon, il me tarde que Hertz nous sorte un bon de réduction sympa pour cet été pour les mettre en concurrence avec Avis, mais pour l'instant y a pas photo entre les deux (tout du moins pour ma loc) !

Je suis en train également de faire ma résa de voiture de loc pour cette été. Du 28/07 a SFO aeroport au 22/08 à LAX aeroport.
J'hésite entre Rentals car:
Un peu moins cher mais il n'indiquen nul part la SLI, assurance complémentaire à 1 million de dollars mini
Bref je trouve les assurances peu précises.
L'ennuyant c'est l'accompte à verser.
Et Locationdevoiture
Un peu plus cher mais tout y est inscrit et les assurances sont bien détaillées...
Tout cela bien sur à catégorie de voiture équivalent.

Il n'y as pas de solution miracle, faire un max de devis, faire attention aux assurances, et option incluse ou non (comme le plein d'essence par exemple) et se lancer.
La plupart prélève une somme ou l'intégralité mais l'annulation reste gratuite et il rembourse les frais avancé.
Il ne faut pas négliger d'aller sur les sites des loueurs aussi, par exemple Alamo.fr offre 10% de remise sur leur site. De même, si vous êtes détenteur d'une carte VISA, vous aurez le droit à la même remise chez AVIS.
Si vous souhaitez plus d'info, donner nous la catégorie que vous souhaitez, le nombre de personne, etc...

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

After years of hoping, waiting, planning, then changing, saving, and searching for the best possible route... we're FINALLY off this summer for a 5-week road trip in the West.
I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!
Anyway, the itinerary has been modified and extended to please everyone (I’m no longer the only one making decisions!!)

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
