Après un premier voyage dans l'ouest américain en 2011, j'y retourne en avril 2014!
Lors de ce premier voyage, j'avais acheté mes billets puis j'avais donné mon itinéraire ici sur le forum, itinéraire qui avait du coup été modifié, engendrant des frais supplémentaires. Je ne fais pas la même erreur cette fois-ci, je préfère vous demander votre avis avant d'acheter mes billets!
Petite précision, je suis une fille de 24 ans et cette fois-ci je partirai toute seule (sauf à Las Vegas et San Francisco où je serai avec un ami).
Vu le prix des billets et mes congés, je pense partir le vendredi 4 avril et rentrer en France le mardi 22 avril.
Pour l'instant voici l'itinéraire que je pense faire :
J1 : Arrivée à Phoenix
J2 : Phoenix - Grand Canyon
J3 : Grand Canyon- Monument Valley
J4 : Monument Valley - Moab (Arches NP)
J5 : Moab (Canyonlands NP- Dead Horse Point)
J6 :Moab - Torrey (Capitol Reef)
J7 : Torrey - Zion
J8 : Zion - Arrivée à Las vegas le soir.
J9 : Las vegas
J10 : Las Vegas - Death Valley
J11 : death valley - Lee vining
J12 : Yosemite
J13 : Yosemite - Lake tahoe
J14 : Lake Tahoe - San Francisco
J16 : SF
J17 : SF

Ce parcours a été un peu modifié car je suis déjà allée dans l'ouest américain et j'ai déjà été à Bryce Canyon ou à Page par exemple. J'ai essayé de me concentrer sur ce que je n'avais pas vu (ou que j'aimerais revoir).
Je pense louer une voiture comme je l'avais fait en 2011.
Ensuite, je tiens à préciser que je ne suis pas adepte des randonnées trop longues (randonnée de 2h au maximum) et que je ne vais donc pas dans les parcs pour faire de trop longues randonnées, juste pour admirer certains points de vue.
Aussi, pour compliquer les choses, j'ai une étape obligatoire : je rejoins un ami (qui vit aux Etats-Unis) à Las Vegas. Au vu de ses obligations (travail), il ne peut me rejoindre que du vendredi au dimanche. C'est pour cela que j'ai placé Las Vegas aux jours 8, 9 et 10 qui tombent un week-end.
J'attends avec impatience vos commentaires et critiques.
Attention à Yosemite, la Tioga sera bien sûr fermée ! En général d'ailleurs, je me demande si ton parcours est bien adapté pour cette période.... Après je n'ai jamais voyagé si tôt.😇

Oui c'est ce que je crains également. Mais j'y vais avant tout pour voir un ami (il m'hébergera à SF) et il n'est disponible que début avril ou fin mai. Vu les prix des billets d'avion, je ne peux partir que début avril.
Pourquoi ce ne serait pas adapté à la période? Aurais-tu des suggestions pour améliorer mon parcours? Merci d'avance!
Du jour 4 à 8 je trouve que c'est plutôt rapide. Après je suis adepte du "je prends le temps" et j'aime la rando.. donc bon, si effectivement tu veux juste faire les points de vue, ca va le faire en terme de temps. Par contre, seule, cela fait beaucoup de route. J'espère que tu aimes la musique ! 😎😛

Attention, la route est très longue, belle mais longue. Grosse journée de route en perspective ! Regarde sur ouestusa.fr si tu veux des idées de spot sur la route. Si tu ne l'a pas déjà fait quand tu étais à Bryce, sur le chemin tu peux aller à Mosey cave, petite rando super.
J7 : Torrey - Zion
J8 : Zion - Arrivée à Las vegas le soir.
Pourquoi ne pas faire valley of fire en fin de journée avant de retourner à Vegas.

Tu peux rajouter une jour ici car la route est longue tant en venant de vegas que pour rejoindre ta prochaine destination. c'est dommage de ne pas exploiter plus ce parc fantastique !

Pour régler ce problème, il faut contourner par l'ouest de la sierra. La route est longue, c'est vrai, mais pour rejoindre Yosemite tu n'as pas trop le choix! Ou alros, tu fais un vol Vegas SF puis tu loues une voiture à SF pour passer 2 jours à Yosemite à la fin de ton voyage.... Why not. Du coup, tu rates Death valley.

La dernière fois j'étais partie du 20 au 31 aout. Je te mets rapidement l'itinéraire : las vegas, grand canyon, Page, bryce canyon, retour Las vegas. Vol intérieur vers SF. De San Francisco, on était redescendu vers Los Angeles en passant par Monterey.

Si, je le ferai sûrement, j'ai mis un itinéraire "en gros" pour savoir si c'était faisable et si prendre des billets d'avion avec atterrissage à Phoenix et départ de San Francisco n'était pas une grossière erreur :)

Tu devrais entre Zion et Las Vegas aller faire un tour à Valley of Fire. Il y a de très belles choses à voir, c'est très accessible (sans grosse rando)et tu y es à une période idéale (tu éviteras la fournaise de l'été).

Pour Zion, le matin tu peux faire la petite rando Canyon Overlook trail (1h) qui offre un très beau panorama sur le canyon de Zion et qui est absolument à faire le matin sinon on est vite à contre jour: http://jeveuxcamperauxusa2.blogspot.fr/p/the-wave.html
Pour Las Vegas, c'est dommage que tu y sois le WE car c'est là que les prix sont les plus élevés.

Pour SF, j'aimerais juste profiter un peu de mon pote (et aussi d'un hébergement gratuit ^^) mais rien d'obligé si ce n'est 1 jour minimum à SF.

C'est vrai que Moab est une de mes priorités tout comme Monument Valley. Après pour revoir certains trucs, ça ne me dérangerait pas de revoir le grand canyon ou Bryce canyon, mais ça ne me dérangerait pas non plus de ne pas y aller..

A priori, Tahoe en avril, y'a encore de la neige, ou potentiellement de la neige, comme à Mammoth ou Bodie (et Yosemite évidemment) ! Ca a son charme, mais encore faut-il que ce soit ce que tu recherches ! Si la neige n'y est plus, il y a de fortes chances que ce soit encore dans le dégel, donc fort boueux.
L'alternative serait peut-être de gagner la côte après avoir visité Death Valley, et remonter le long du Pacifique jusqu'à SF.
J'ai de bon souvenirs d'avril sur la HW1. Pas de brume comme en été ou en automne, et il y a plusieurs petits parcs sympas à voir en passant.
Sous réserve que tu n'aies pas déjà fait cet itinéraire auparavant... cela étant, je ne m'en lasse pas et la lumière change selon les saisons.
Cela te laisserait la partie Yosemite et High Sierra pour un autre voyage quand les routes sont ouvertes...
Ou alors, longer la Sierra pour voir la partie basse de Yosemite. Ca fait passer vers Sequoia, mais là aussi, la neige ne sera pas loin.
Bref : la jonction grand sud avec San Francisco en hiver, c'est pas le plus facile.

La Wawona road et la Valley road restent ouvertes toute l'année mais, en fonction des conditions, les chaînes peuvent ponctuellement être nécessaires : Areas to visit: While Yosemite Valley and Wawona remain accessible by car all year, the Tioga and Glacier Point Roads remain closed due to snow, often until late May (see a list of opening dates since 1980). Tire chains sometimes are required even during spring.
En avril dernier, nous n'avons eu aucun souci. Mariposa grove était accessible et le sentier plutôt sec. En revanche Glacier road était toujours fermée. Des amis qui ont fait Yosemite en avril de l'année précédente ont pu monter à Glacier point. C'est donc très aléatoire à cette période et, en effet, on ne peut pas prédire le degré d'enneigement à l'avance. Ce qui est sûr, c'est que les cascades et rivières sont vigoureuses et qu'on peut déjà voir une bonne partie de Yosemite. À Séquoia park, nos amis avaient eu pas mal de neige (du coup, on a fait le choix de ne pas y aller).
L'itinéraire proposé est sympa et bien optimisé ; le seul inconvénient en commençant par SF, si je peux me permettre, c'est que Yosemite se trouve en début de séjour. À 15 jours près, les conditions peuvent être différentes. En tournant dans l'autre sens, ce serait nickel 🙂

Alors pour expliquer ce gros changement par rapport à l'itinéraire de Bastinj : j'étais chez un ami et pour des questions de budget je suis restée une semaine chez lui.
J'ai profité de cette semaine à SF pour visiter tranquillement, avec les classiques : Alcatraz, fisherman's wharf (où j'ai été attaquée par une mouette), Lombard Street, etc. Comme j'avais du temps, nous avons passé une après-midi à Sonoma Valley pour faire une dégustation de vin et une après-midi à Berkeley. Je suis également allée voir un match de NBA : Golden State Warrior Vs Utah Jazz.
Petit week-end entre ami à Las Vegas avec le samedi passage aux casinos. Dès le dimanche matin, nous sommes allés à une pool party (celle de l'hotel Wynn & Encore).
A partir de là, j'ai laissé mon ami retourner travailler (hihi) et je suis partie en road trip toute seule !
Pour la voiture, ayant moins de 25 ans, j'ai payé la taxe jeune conducteurs : j'ai payé 454 euros pour une semaine.

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:

- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. They treated us like royalty from start to finish. These two live in Las Vegas and know the region like the back of their hand. The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.

Mais après ton séjour au Yosemite, il faudra soit que tu rejoignes la côte, soit que tu continues vers le sud (et attention, les chaines seront peut-être obligatoires... pas évident peut-être pour toi en étant seule)
