Hi there,

I’m thinking of heading to Siem Reap and Angkor in about two weeks. Can anyone tell me if it’s safe given the border issues? Haven’t seen anything recent in the news. Thanks!

Hi there,

No problem at all in Siem Reap and the Angkor temple area—thousands of Western tourists visit every day during this peak season. The tensions are focused at the borders (Siem Reap - Angkor is far from there), but the ceasefire signed at the end of December between the two countries is still holding. Have a great trip! !

Thanks so much for the feedback. I’ll definitely go back—last time was in 2000, so I’m sure it’s changed a lot! 😊

Hello, The site itself hasn’t changed[;)], but the surrounding areas have been altered. Villagers from nearby have been relocated much farther away, and large areas have been cleared to create huge parking lots. It’s quite different from the 2000s! But the whole experience remains majestic and unforgettable after that initial wow moment. Just a quick safety tip: with the influx of tourists and their snacks, the monkeys have become pretty aggressive. Be careful even if you’re just taking out your water bottle. The monkeys don’t know what you’re pulling from your bag and will be on you in a split second—they bite easily. Just stay alert. Enjoy! Eric
