Layover in Atlanta and baggage claim

Hi there,

I’m heading to the United States for the first time, flying from Paris to Austin with a layover in Atlanta. I arrive at 8:55 PM and leave again at 10:30 PM. Air France told me I don’t need to collect my checked bags, but I keep reading that I *do* have to pick them up after immigration and customs—and that doing all that in 1 hour 30 minutes is basically impossible. I’m traveling with my son, and our English isn’t great. It’s making me a little anxious because the flight I need to catch is the last one of the day, and if I miss it, I’ll have to wait until the next morning.

Do you think this is doable?

Thanks so much

Hi Virginie,

No need to panic! Sure, 1 hour 30 minutes is tight, but it’s doable. It all depends on how many planes arrive at the same time and how many agents are on duty. I haven’t been through Atlanta in a while, but there’s no need to worry too much. First, you’ll go through immigration, then pick up your bags from the carousel and drop them off on another belt a little further away.

Usually, connecting flights wait if there’s a slight delay. Don’t hesitate to talk to the cabin crew (if it’s Air France, they speak French ;)) and let them know you’re concerned—they’ll give you the best advice and guide you. I usually fly with United, and when passengers have a short connection time, they can disembark first to save a few precious minutes.

The airline is responsible for getting you to your destination, so it’s in their best interest that you don’t miss your second flight!

Safe travels!

PS: If your son is a minor, make sure you have the father’s authorization for the trip, otherwise, immigration might get complicated!

Hi there, save time by downloading the MPC app and entering the participants' details in advance. Once you're on the tarmac with a signal, check in using the app and head to the MPC-designated lane at immigration.

hi, yes, you’ll need to go through immigration, pick up your bags, and put them on the belt for your next flight. I think your connection time is a bit tight. Use the MPC app, as mentioned before.

Hi, save time by installing the MPC app and entering the participants in advance. Once you're on the tarmac with signal, complete the arrival check-in in the app and meet at the MPC dedicated lane at immigration.

WARNING: The MPC app is only valid for travelers returning to the U.S., which is why I didn’t mention it—this is their first trip! Otherwise, I can confirm the app is great; it saved me a ton of time during my layover in Washington last month! https://www.cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/mobile-passport-control

Hello,

I passed through ATL earlier this year, and there were signs saying that for some connecting flights, you no longer have to retrieve your baggage and put it back on the belt.

I didn’t look into it further since it didn’t apply to me...

Worth checking, then...

However, you’ll have to go through immigration: tip—hurry as soon as you get off the plane to join the queue...

The airport is huge, so check carefully where your departure gate is, and most importantly, keep an eye on the screens regularly—the gate can change, it happens..

Hi there,

If you're departing from the U.S. with a connection in the U.S., you don’t need to reclaim your baggage. However, make sure your checked bags are checked through to your final destination and confirm their transfer during your layover. The reason is customs: you have to go through customs with your bags. So, if you're coming from another U.S. city, there’s no customs involved.

If you're departing from a country where U.S. customs officers work on the ground (Canada, for example) and you’ve already cleared U.S. customs at your departure airport, you might not have to go through U.S. customs again with your checked bags during your U.S. layover. Same as above: Double-check that your checked bags are checked through to your final destination and confirm their transfer during the layover. Best regards,
