Flights to Salt Lake City or Jackson Hole

Hi there,

We're planning to visit Yellowstone between mid and late September (yes, I'm leaving it to the last minute for bookings...). I was initially planning to arrive and depart from Salt Lake City, which I’d also like to explore. It turns out that flights to SLC are 300 € more expensive than flights to Jackson Hole, even though the connection goes through... SLC! I’ve checked on several comparison sites from different locations, and these prices remain pretty consistent.

Does anyone know what it would cost if I skip the connection to Jackson Hole from SLC to take advantage of the cheaper fare and then fly back from JH instead?

Thanks in advance!

Sylvain.

Hi there,

A classic case where the direct flight from point A to point B is more expensive than with a connection at point B.

A flight ticket must absolutely be used in chronological order (sequential, as the term is used in the airline industry). If you don’t take the second flight SLC/Jackson, you’ll be considered a "no-show," and this will automatically cancel all other flights. The same goes if you skip the third flight Jackson/SLC—your SLC/Paris flight will be canceled.

Out of curiosity, check the price of a Paris/Jackson ticket with a stop in SLC on the way there or back. That’ll work. And obviously, since the flights are operated by Delta Airlines, you’ll only find them on their site or those of partner airlines like Air France or KLM, which are SkyTeam members.

Thanks for your reply. Actually, by booking a stopover in SLC on one of the two flights, the price is the same as a direct one. I’ll do that. Thanks again! !

Watch out for car rentals!... My large SUV in September cost me 1300 euros in Los Angeles. From other cities, it was 4500 € for the same dates. So don’t just consider the airfare price!

+1 with usafan’s reply (as always ;)). I’m guessing you’re not just doing a round trip, so you’ll need to factor in the return fees from another agency, which could be higher if you pick up the car in Jackson.

On another note: Salt Lake City doesn’t have much tourist appeal. You get there, grab groceries at Walmart, and… you’re on your way! Though you can stop by the Great Salt Lake. But if you’re booking flights to Jackson, you’re not missing much.

Hey,

Renting a car is always a factor to consider. Depending on your itinerary and available time, you’ll need to plan everything carefully. SLC can be visited quickly—one day is enough.

Okay, thanks everyone for your replies—I’ll check that out. For car rentals, it’s the pick-up trucks that are the cheapest. So far, on our previous trips to the US, rental prices were "logical": small car/small price. Do you know if these "discounted" prices on pick-ups (about 40% cheaper than sedans) are hiding something?

That’s actually surprising! But when it comes to prices, nothing shocks me anymore—we see such big differences! Which rental company is it?

In my opinion, foreigners don’t rent pickups. Not practical at all. You’re forced to put your luggage in the open bed most of the time. There’s limited space for passengers, and most importantly, you can’t use it for camping like I do with a car. They replaced some of the Jeep 4x4s with pickups without considering one thing—only Americans use pickups...
