hi everyone, we’re itching to see the Namib Desert again, and looking at the Tracks4Africa map I notice there’s a track that reaches Saddle Hill Ghost Town and seems to be allowed. Has anyone done it? We’re used to dunes—on our first visit we went from Walvis Bay to Sandwich Harbour with our rental 4x4 but followed a licensed guide. Thanks for your replies! Brigitte

Nous n'aimons pas rouler trop longtemps dans une journée (et prendre des pistes trop difficiles) et surtout nous ne faisons pas du tout de randonnées. Marche très limitée pour l'une d'entre nous. Good evening, I’m drawn to the siren call of Voy.. priv... offering a lovely Namibia itinerary, but I won’t hide that our last trip with this same "organization" left a bitter taste... though to be fair, the destination had lost all its charm—or maybe it was just too much so: Bali! I loved it in 2001, but when I went back in 2023, I hated it. Still, we let ourselves be convinced by an enticing price...

But that’s not the point. Now, we want to take this dream trip to Namibia. There are so many options, from the simplest to the most sophisticated: tourist buses, self-drive 4x4s, or private guides. Each has its pros and cons.

The bus: I hated Bali *because* of this—too many people, too touristy... On the other hand, you just let yourself be guided. No stress about driving.

4x4: Waking up in the middle of nature must be incredible—being self-sufficient with a travel journal, knowing every day is full of surprises. The downside? Only my partner drives. A former sales rep, he’s logged so many kilometers it’s wrecked his back...

With a guide: That’d be the dream... but we don’t have the budget.

So, I’m looking for a solution—contacts, advice—to make this trip match our tastes *and* our budget. For early April, of course!

Nous partons à 2 vehicules pour 20 jours en NAMIBIE courant JANVIER 2020 et je souhaiterai vos avis sur mon parcours que j'ai effectué. Nous arriverons à Windhoek le matin assez tôt puis irons récupérer nos véhicules. Aprés quelques achats de nourritures nous voudrions faire un 1er stop à WATERBERG. Je pense qu'une seule nuit et passer la matiner ça devrait suffir. Puis nous continuerons notre route vers Namuponi (2 nuits) Halili (2 nuits) Okaukuejo (2 nuits) chaque fois en arrivant au camp en fin d’apres midi et passer une journée + autre nuit. Avez vous des camps sympa à me conseiller a l’intérieur du parc. Puis passer une nuit au DOLOMITE CAMP ( un peu de vrai confort) si vous avez d'autres idées je suis preneur

Cela dépendra aussi de la météo car c'est la saison des pluies et il me semble que ETOSHA est fermé si il pleut. ou peut être ferons nous le trajet dans l'autre sans. les autorités namibiennes ont porté plainte suite aux tags /grafs dessinés sur les murs de la gare désaffectée de Garub sur la ligne Keetmanshoop- Luderitz. D'après les informations, les auteurs de ces tags seraient de nationalité française et plus précisément des Lyonnais, très connus poutr leurs actions. Les Namibiens ont porté plainte pour dégradation de site historique.

- Windoek - Etosha 2 jours pleins sur place - Damaraland avec étape à Palmwag/Grootberg et à Brandberg - nuit étape a Swakopmund - Sesriem 2 jours - Mariental, désert de Kalahari une journée

Nous hésitons sur d'autres étapes. 3 choix sont possibles après avoir fait le tour des possibilités:

Option 1: - Passage dans le Kaokoland au camp Aussicht faire une visite chez les himba - Ajouter une étape au Spitzkoppe - excursion à sandwich harbour - mais on zappe Luderitz et la ville fantôme de Kolmanskop

Option 2: - Passage dans le Kaokoland au camp Aussicht faire une visite chez les himba - On zappe le Spitzkoppe - On zappe sandwich harbour - On a le temps de faire Luderitz et la ville fantôme de Kolmanskop

Option 3: - On zappe le Camp Aussicht et les Himba - On a le temps pour aller au Spitzkoppe, et à sandwich harbour - Le passage vers Luderitz et Kolmanskop se fait avec un peu plus de temps

Quelle option vous paraît la meilleure ?

Hello everyone, We came back enchanted from our first trip to Namibia and we're already thinking of going back. We did the classics: Etosha, Twyfelfontein, Sossusvlei, Deadvlei... Our guide suggests doing the Caprivi Strip over 10 days, alternating 2 nights in a lodge and 2 nights in a tent. Given that we love landscapes but especially wildlife observation, I wonder if after spending 4 nights in Etosha and having visited Botswana twice, Caprivi offers different animals to see and if the wildlife is generally abundant. The videos I've seen online don't really captivate me. It seems quite similar to the Okavango Delta. What do you think? Are there other circuits we should prioritize? Both in our seventies, we prefer staying mainly in lodges. Thanks in advance to those who can give us advice

Hello, Namibia in April for 11 days from the 10th to the 21st with 2 adults and 3 (our son from the 16th to the 21st). We’re looking to combine 2 short circuits for this brief stay. Should we book a vehicle and accommodation through an agency?

We’re used to traveling independently, but we’re hesitant about Namibia! Any recommendations for vehicle rental sites? And agencies?

Nous projetons de partir en Namibie du 23 juin au 13 juillet 2021 (à confirmer en fonction des vols) avec nos deux filles qui auront 16 et 13 ans 1/2. L'idée est de le faire en 4*4 avec tentes sur le toit pour profiter au maximum des grands espaces et de couper un peu avec des lodges et guest farms. Je ne sais pas encore à quelle fréquence. Peut-être prendre un lodge quand le camping n'apporte pas de plus value pour profiter du cadre.

Les itinéraires se ressemblent avec quelques petites différences. il faut déjà que je revois le combiné campsite / lodges car après réflexion je trouve que cela fait bcp de nuits en lodges, alors qu'on loue un 4*4 équipé camping. De plus, une moyenne gamme nous suffit, je n'ai pas encore regardé quelle gamme ils ont choisies. Il me semble avoir lu que sur juin / juillet on ne peut pas profiter des piscines.

Suntrail propose une nuit de plus à Etosha, quel est votre avis : 3 ou 4 nuits ?

C'est une première ébauche à affiner bien sûr mais quelques premiers avis sur les itinéraires et les hébergements que vous connaissez m'aideraient déjà beaucoup.

j'imagine qu'on aura les billets d'avion un peu plus cher aussi avec un vol multi destination

activités : à la louche : 800 euros ( pas encore regardé ça )

et nourriture, sachant que dans certains lodges certains repas du soir sont compris : 300 euros

soit environ 3800 euros en plus

il faut que je regarde ce qu'il en est pour le passage des différentes frontières ....

l'idée, c'est déjà de savoir si pour vous, c'est réalisable ?

je voudrais avoir votre avis sur un voyage que nous allons faire pour 3 semaines en aout/septembre. On voudrait partir de Windhoesk en louant une voiture en montant sur etosha et redescendre pour finir à cap town.(5 jours la bas) (la bas on laisserait notre voiture de location) Qu'en pensez vous en terme de temps? Vous l'avez fait? Ou alors faire l'AFS seulement en incluant bien sur Kruger.

Tout d'abord, bonne et heureuse année 2020 !

Cela fait des semaines que je parcours le forum pour notre futur voyage en Namibie qui aura lieu (normalement) du 25 avril au 9 mai 2020.

Avant de rentrer dans le vif du sujet, je souhaite remercier toutes les personnes qui font vivre ce forum au quotidien et qui apportent leurs connaissances.

C'est pour cela que je fais appel à vous : j'ai besoin d'aide et de conseils.

Mon mari et moi sommes un couple de trentenaires qui adorons voyager. La Namibie sera notre voyage de noces. Nous louerons un 4x4 avec tente sur le toit pour alterner camping et lodge.

A priori (nous attendons quelques informations pour réserver nos billets), notre vol arrivera à Windhoek le 25/04/20 à 6h30 et nous en repartirons le 09/05/20 à 21h35. Cela représente 14 nuits sur place. Malheureusement, nous ne pouvons pas allonger notre séjour tout simplement car nos employeurs nous refusent plus de 15 jours de vacances hors mois d'août.

Après toutes mes lectures, voilà le parcours parfait à nos yeux :

1 nuit arrivée Namibie, 2 nuits Namibrand family hideout, 1 nuit sesriem, 1 nuit Gecko Camp ou Rostock Ritz (qu'en pensez-vous ?), 2 nuits Swakopmund, 1 nuit Spitzkoppe, 1 nuit Brandberg, 2 nuits Grootberg ou Palmwag (que conseillez-vous ? j'ai lu qu'il était possible de faire du camping sauvage dans Palmwag ? la track rhino est-elle vraiment à faire au Grootberg ?) 2 nuits Purros, 3 nuits Etosha, 1 nuit Otiwarongo ou Okonjima.

Cela fait un total de 17 nuits ! Donc 3 nuits en trop par rapport à notre séjour.

Qu'en pensez-vous ? Voyez-vous des étapes que je pourrai supprimer ou diminuer ? Pensez-vous qu'il soit possible de rejoindre le Namibrand directement en arrivant ? Une seule nuit au Namibrand vaut-elle le coup ?

Est-il vraiment nécessaire de réserver les campings/lodges sachant que nous sommes en début de bonne saison ? Cela nous laisserait plus de libertés.

Concernant Purros, tout le monde vante cet endroit et dit que c'est le paradis. Cela me semble un incontournable pour nous sachant que nous souhaitons vraiment voir les éléphants du désert. J'ai contacté un TO qui m'a dépeint ce lieu de manière assez négative en appuyant fortement sur la dangerosité (il y aurait déjà eu un mort sur place) des éléphants et l'état de la route pour y aller. Qu'en pensez-vous ?

Enfin, nous avons choisi la Namibie pour sa diversité : paysages et animaux. Or, en Avril/Mai, les observer n'est pas du tout garanti (je sais que ce sont des êtres humains et que rien n'est prévisible). Les retours sur le forum pour cette période sont donc mitigés pour la faune. J'en arrive à ma question : cela vaut-il le coup d'aller à Etosha ? Le Botswana est-il plus adapté ? Si oui, cela est-il possible de s'envoler pour 3 jours là-bas avec un séjour organisé et rentrer à Windohek pour prendre l'avion du retour ? Un TO à proposer ?

J'ai beaucoup de questions et j'en suis désolée.

Bonjour, Je prépare un voyage en self drive avec voitures 4x4 et tentes de toit sur Namibie et bostwana, pour mai prochain. J'ai utilisé beaucoup d'infos sur ce site, merci aux contributeurs. Je me pose des questions sur la nécessité de réserver les campings a l'avance, ce qui "bloque" un peu l'itinéraire. J'ai réservé sur sesriem et etosha, mais ailleurs est ce indispensable ? C'est écrit partout que oui pour juillet août, mais est ce le cas aussi en mai ? Je pense en particulier au parc du Chobe et a l'okavongo au bostwana (Chobe font river, savuti, kwhai, moremi). Quelqu'un peut il me conseiller ? Merci d'avance

Hey everyone! Heading to Namibia in a few days and I just read that the entry fees for all parks in Namibia have skyrocketed. Increases between 86 and 100%, and this has been in effect since April 1st (no joke). Have any of you heard about this, and if so, do you know if it’s actually being enforced? For example, the fee for Etosha has gone from 150 NAD to 280 NAD per day per person. Thanks in advance!

We’re heading to Namibia for the first time at the end of January 2026 for 12 nights as a couple, with a 4x4 rental (no tent). We’re planning to stay in lodges, hotels, or similar. Our goal is to explore Namibia and see as many animals as possible.

We were thinking of following this route:

Windhoek to Sesriem – 2 nights

Sesriem to Omaruru – 2 nights

Omaruru to Ongava (ETOSHA) – 2 nights

Ongava to Onguma (ETOSHA) – 2 nights

Onguma to Okonjima – 2 nights

Okonjima to Windhoek – 2 nights (these last two nights near Windhoek at a lodge like Our Habitas)

What do you think of this plan?

I know we’ll miss a lot of must-see spots, but we only have 12 nights, and the distances between the points of interest we’ve chosen are pretty long.

Also, since January/February is the "rainy season," do you think this itinerary is suitable?

Don’t hesitate to tell me if we’re completely off track or if you’d recommend something totally different—we’re open to any suggestions.

For those who’ve been to both, could you share the main differences? I get the impression that in Botswana, the landscapes are a bit samey everywhere, while Namibia offers more diversity? Hi there, I’m looking for a driver who can take my 77-year-old parents on a classic 15-day road trip. Windhoek - Okonjima - Etosha - Khorixas - Swakopmund - Sesriem - Mariental Having done this route myself last year, I didn’t see the point of joining an organized tour, and my parents are seasoned travelers but no longer feel 100% comfortable driving on rough roads with the risk of a flat tire or sandstorm (we didn’t encounter either, but it’s a 50/50 chance). In Asia, this kind of arrangement is super easy to organize, but I get the feeling it’s less straightforward to find this type of service in Namibia. The 4x4 rental would be handled through an agency in Windhoek (Safari Car Rental—great experience). We’d book nights in lodges or hotels directly (no camping). Just sharing our experience from our wonderful trip for two, which we’ve just returned from. We decided to get help with the bookings from the agency Tourmaline Safaris, and everything was perfectly organized without any extra costs for the reservations. We chose to alternate nights in rooftop tents, Camping2Go (fitted tents), and guesthouses.

Flight from Paris to Windhoek with a layover in Johannesburg. 4x4 rented from Safari Car Rental—flawless. We had an official translation of our driver’s licenses, but no one asked for them during the trip. All transfers were arranged by Tourmaline, and they were all perfectly on time.

No logistical issues with Tourmaline Safaris, and given that our initial flight was delayed by a day, my checked luggage arrived a week late (Tourmaline arranged for the luggage to be transferred by taxi to Omaruru), and our initial Windhoek-Kasane flight was canceled by Air Botswana without explanation, we were really relieved to have the agency’s local contact to handle these unexpected issues! Delayed luggage seems to be common, but the agency had warned us, so we packed our carry-ons accordingly.

It was very cold at night (June), especially in Omaruru, but luckily we were prepared. Since it had rained a lot this season, Victoria Falls was flowing heavily! So much so that the water mist prevented us from seeing the eastern part of the falls. But a short helicopter tour gave us a better view. Be aware that the entrance fees for the falls are high (50 dollars per person) and only grant one entry—you can’t come in the morning and return in the late afternoon. We stayed from 6 AM to 3 PM in the park, taking breaks at the cafeteria, to see the falls at sunrise, at 11 AM (when the mist partially lifts), and at 3 PM (not much difference from the 11 AM view).

That’s it! A magnificent trip that left us with wonderful memories. Nothing disappointed us.
