I’m planning a little 3-week trip to Vietnam in mid-to-late March. It’ll probably be the only time I can go.
I enjoyed Thailand but clearly preferred Laos—it was calmer.
For Vietnam, I don’t have a precise idea of what I want to see yet, and I’m the type to improvise a bit once I’m there. I’m not super adventurous but I’m curious, and I prefer street food over restaurants, markets and off-the-beaten-path villages over big attractions.
But I don’t want to miss the must-sees either.
So, given that I’ll only be there for 3 weeks, I’m wondering: should I absolutely stick to either the north or the south? Or is it possible to have a nice, not-too-hectic trip by spending, say, one week in the south and two in the north?...
(I’d take a multi-city flight for arrival and departure)

We’ve planned a week in the delta, but sometimes I wonder if that’s not too much… We’ll be there in early February, and the idea is to take a taxi straight from Saigon Airport to Ben Tre. I’m counting on 3 nights to recover and adjust after the long trip. Then I was thinking of Sadec, Can Tho, Chau Doc, Ha Tien, and back to Saigon for 3 nights before a flight to Hoi An. We’ve got 6 weeks total, so we have a bit of time. After reading different travel stories, the destinations in the delta seem a bit repetitive—I keep seeing the same excursions. On the other hand, I also think having time is a chance to get to know the local life a little better. My question really comes down to this: for those of you who travel at a relaxed pace, do you have any tips? I’ve heard the floating markets aren’t that interesting anymore. Also, motorbikes aren’t our thing.

I’m starting to plan my next trip to Southeast Asia this winter (2.5 months, leaving in early December), and here’s a rough outline of my route—I’d love to share it with you and hear your thoughts and tips.
- I’ll start in Bangkok and already have three spots I’ve marked: Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, and Uthai Thani (I haven’t been to any of these places yet). - Next, I’d like to cross the country from west to east to reach the Laos border. I’d love suggestions for any interesting stops along this route—I don’t know this part of Thailand at all... - Then I’ll head into Laos, probably at Savannakhet (you can usually get a visa at the border). - > I’m tempted to spend a week in Hoi An, Vietnam, since I loved that city and the area when I visited two years ago. No visa needed for Vietnam now, so it could be a nice little detour. On the map, it doesn’t look too far, but I know you’ve got to be careful with these things, and I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Any opinions on this? - Back to Laos (maybe via Dakta), and I’ll head south along the Mekong, probably doing the Bolaven Plateau loop that I missed last time. Then Paksé, the 4,000 Islands... I’ve been before, but I’d happily go back. - Crossing into Cambodia, I’ll follow the Mekong down to Phnom Penh (I know this area and love how untouristy it is). From there, I’ll probably spend a few days in Kep (quieter than Kampot). Still undecided, though. - Then back to Thailand (BKK), likely by plane from Phnom Penh since the borders between the two countries are currently closed (plus, let’s be honest, Cambodian roads... ;-). We’ll see how things look when the time comes. - After that, I’d like to explore southern Thailand, taking it slow with short hops. I’ve got my eye on Khao Sok National Park, and I’ve heard good things about Krabi... Again, I don’t know this region well, so any info or tips would be great.

Here’s a summary of our itinerary: We arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of Wednesday, March 18, and depart from Hanoi on the evening of Thursday, April 16. First, I’d like to head to Ho Chi Minh City because the temperatures are high in that region in mid-March. After that, we’ll visit Phu Quoc Island and then the Mekong Delta. We’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City and take a flight to Hue for 2 days, then Tam Coc / Ninh Binh (2-3 days), and Cat Ba Island with a visit to Lan Ha Bay (4 days). We’ll spend a few days in Hanoi, followed by 3-4 days in Sapa with some hikes, and then the Ha Giang loop (4 days). (I’m a motorcyclist—I ride a BMW trail bike and have taken care of renewing my international license.) We’re considering renting a motorcycle or bicycles when needed, except in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The weather in northern Vietnam in early April should theoretically be decent. Finally, we’ll return to Hanoi before heading back to Paris and the Pays de la Loire. Unfortunately, I’m skipping Angkor in Cambodia. I’d like to have a guide for 1 or 2 days in Sapa (which typical agency would you recommend?), and I’m wondering if I should book an agency for the 4 days in Ha Giang. I prefer my independence and don’t really like the "group" aspect of agencies. I’ll rent a 150cc motorcycle, and my wife will ride with me. Other questions: What are some good, typical accommodations to book in the places we’ve identified? Thanks for any info. Did I forget anything, or should we adjust our itinerary? After arriving in Ho Chi Minh City at the beginning of March 26, where I think I’ll stay for maybe two days (or more?), we’d like to spend a few days in the Mekong Delta.
Is it better to stay in one place (Vinh Long, Cai Be, My Tho, An Binh, etc.) and take boat trips every day, or split our time between two or three spots, which means changing accommodation and moving our luggage around? Of course, agencies offer 3- or 5-day tours from Ho Chi Minh City, but are they really worth it, both financially and in terms of the visits themselves?
What’s your experience with this? How did you do it, and if you had to do it again? Any tips?

I’ve been in Nan since yesterday and... I love it! So thanks, Thierry. It’s exactly the kind of place I’d been dreaming of... Even if communication is a bit tough, it’s not impossible. They don’t even know the most basic English words! Everyone laughs and they’re the first to pull out their phones to... translate. They’re even quicker on the uptake than I am.
And then there’s the time I say Nan (pronounced "Nane"). They don’t understand me. After a while (sometimes a long one), they reply: "Ah, Nan?" (pronounced "Nane") 😵🤳😃
The town is exactly how you described it back in 2022. Though I’m surprised to find so many trendy, slightly intellectual "Cafés." Apparently, coffee—excellent everywhere—is king in Nan. It feels like a university town. And it seems pretty lively at night! But for now, I’m going to bed early. I caught a nasty cold, which didn’t stop me from walking 12 km this morning. But I came back to my accommodation by 3 PM (gorgeous and luxurious with top-notch service for 800 baht—even a cute local welcome gift this morning, plus other unexpected touches like a bottle of honey and chrysanthemum flowers for tea. The lady must’ve guessed I was coming down with something yesterday). I thought about going out for dinner but didn’t have the energy. I think I’ve got at least 39°C fever...
Anyway, I’m sending you this message, Thierry, because you mentioned a daily bus to Chiang Rai, so I didn’t look into it. But now it’s a real problem—no buses to Chiang Rai, only taxis. At least 2,500 baht for the cheapest one! I’ll check the bus station directly tomorrow. Online, it’s all taxis, no buses. I’d like to explore the countryside/mountains if I can find an affordable driver. Any ideas for destinations or itineraries? Thanks.

Je me casse la tête sur comment organiser nos journées libres sans agence à Hoi An et Hué.
A Hoi An, nous serons 2 jours et nuits au Hoi An Chic.
J’avais pensé visiter la vieille ville un matin tôt.
Est ce qu’une visite à pied avec un guide local nous permettrait de mieux apprécier la ville?
Par la suite, quoi faire: tous les groupes organisés semblent faire le même type de visites des villages et boutiques d’artisans en vélo...Le vélo, ça nous plairait bien mais je ne veux pas me rendre dans les endroits les plus touristiques...
Et la plage, il y en a une qui est mieux dans le coin, propre et pas trop bondée ou bruyante? Nous serons à Hoi An en mars, un mardi et mercredi.
Idem pour Hué. Nous y serons presque 2 jours complets, car prenons le train de nuit pour Ninh Binh à 21h30. Par contre, nous y sommes un vendredi et samedi... Les agences proposent toute la visite de la citadelle ET des tombeaux (2-3) dans la même excursion. On aurait voulu faire ce type de visites sur les 2 jours, prendre plus notre temps pour les visites et en faire une visite de toute une journée en combinant bateau, ou vélo.. On pourrait visiter alors la citadelle et cité interdite par nous- mêmes le lendemain ou doit on aussi prendre un tour guidé avec une agence ?
Avez vous le nom d’une agence locale intéressante pour ce type de visites ? Des suggestions? On va prendre 1 journée en plus avec chauffeur entre Hoi An et Hué pour aller visiter My Son, musée Cham à Danan, montagne de marbre...

We’d thought about including Bac Ha or Mai Chau, but in the end, we wanted to avoid excessive travel and rushing around. That’s not our style—we’d rather see less but have time to enjoy what we visit at a relaxed pace. We’ll definitely be back (in a better season) to see some of what we’ll miss this time. Just to note: we’re not motorbike riders, and we’re not the type to start our days at dawn and keep going until nightfall. We go at the pace of the day’s mood and energy. My questions: - Thoughts on the itinerary? - Ninh Binh: where’s the best place to stay to explore mostly on foot, by bike, or by taxi? - Cat Ba to Ninh Binh route: is it better to arrange it through one of our accommodations (departure or arrival) or handle it ourselves? - For the return day between Ninh Binh and Hanoi, I’d like to visit some sights rather than make a direct trip, since we’ll already spend enough time in Ninh Binh and Hanoi. Bonjour. Je suis actuellement à Hanoi et aurait besoin d'un ou deux conseils.
D'abord est-ce que la baie d'halong vaut le coup ? J'ai entendu parler de la baie de Lan Ha en kayak. Des recommendations ? Mieux vaut Booker sur place ou via une Agence à Hanoi ? (j'ai trouvé une pour 135$ 2 jours 1 Nuit depuis Hanoi.
Deuxième chose j'aimerai faire les montagnes au nord autour de HakGiang dont 2 jours à Sapa) pour environ 5 jours. Des recommendations ? Est-ce faisable en bus ? Je ne me sens pas du tout à l'aise à l'idée de louer un scooter.

Je souhaitais passer une seule nuit à Can Tho pour visiter les marchés le lendemain matin et tout de suite après vers 13h partir pour Ben Tre, mais il y aurait un bus seulement à 8h le lendemain matin pour Ben Tre donc je suis obligée de passer deux nuits à Can Tho ce qui décale toutes mes réservation de mon voyage.
Pouvez-vous me dire comment me rendre à Ben Tre de Can Tho avec un moyen de transport qui partirait après 12h30 de Can Tho ? y a t'il des shuttles ? Merci pour vos réponses c'est urgent car les hôtels que j'ai choisi (pas chers et biens) commencent à être complets.

I couldn’t find any recent posts on this topic, so I thought I’d create a new one. We’ve just started planning our family trip to Vietnam this coming August. We’d like to travel from North to South, starting in Hanoi and ending in Ho Chi Minh.
Usually, we rent a car when we arrive and manage on our own. But I get the feeling that in Vietnam, it’s more complicated... It seems like the only option we have is to rent a car with a driver? Is that really the case?
I’m thinking of starting with a cruise in Halong Bay since we arrive on my partner’s birthday, and I wanted a beautiful setting to celebrate it. So, is the option of having a driver wait for 2 days while we’re on the cruise really feasible?
The rest of the itinerary isn’t planned at all yet. I’d love to hear your tips. We’re traveling from August 8th (morning) to the 26th (afternoon).

Bonjour j'acompagne un groupe et de passage a hoi An pour se relaxer, nous voudrions avoir la possibilité d'un bon massage dans des conditions d'hygiène et de serieux. Le nombre de salon est impressionnant aussi votre aide me serai d'un grand secours pour faire le tri et une fourchette de prix.
On nous propose une excursion a dos de buffle dans les rizières et une ballade en bateaux rond , l'avez vous fait ?, pour 2h30 . Je trouve les tarifs importants et pas de degressifs pour les groupes. Avez vous fait ce type d'excurdion a Hoi An?

Après avoir glané beaucoup d'infos sur ce forum (merci en particulier à Asia7, Larsay, Kimtwo, et Henon21 avec qui j'ai échangé sur le forum Indonésie qui est plus ma spécialité😊), il me reste qqs questions sur notre voyage qui débutera le 19 sept a Hanoi et se terminera un mois plus tard à Ho Chi Minh Ville.
Comme d'habitude, le parcours est à peu prêt décidé dans ses grandes lignes, , sachant qu'il sera modifié au gré des rencontres, de la météo, des imprévus, On sautera aussi une ou plusieurs étapes si ce beau programme est trop chargé😛 Seul l'hotel à l'arrivée à Hanoi est réservé.
Voila donc le parcours prévu (pas très original) à la louche (ça va forcément bouger pendant le voyage) et les questions qui en découlent :
Hanoi 2j Cat Ba + baie de Lan Ha (+ Halong ?) 4j (dont 0,5j transport depuis Hanoi et 2j de "croisière") "Boucle" de Ha Giang-Dong Van-Meo Vac 3j Bac Ha 2j Tam Coc 2j Hue, 1 ou 2 j en fc de la météo Hoi An 1 ou 2j en fc de la météo Mui Ne ou Con Dao ( ou ... ?) 4j Delta du Mekong 2-3j suivant le temps restant HCV et environs 1 ou 2j suivant le temps restant On louera les services d'un chauffeur pour le nord (Ha Giang Dong Van) et peut-être dans le delta du Mekong Pour le reste, tous les billets de transports seront achetés sur place : billets combinés Hanoi->Cat Ba, Cat ->Ba-Ha Giang , Sapa ou Lao Cai -> Nonh Binh, puis train pour Hue et train ou bus pour le sud (Mui Ne ou autre ?)
Mes questions :
- baies de Lan Ha/Halong : la baie de Lan Ha est-elle aussi belle que Halong (la foule en moins) ? Est-il nécessaire de parcourir une partie de la baie d'Along en plus de la baie de Lan Ha en 2j (1 nuit a bord) depuis Bac Ha ? - j'ai lu qu'on peut réserver ss pb cette "croisière" dans de nombreuses agences à Cat Ba : avez-vous des agences a conseiller/éviter ? - achat à Cat Ba d'un billet combiné Cat Ba-Hanoi-Ha Giang : je suppose que les hotels ou des agences proposent ce service ?
- pour la boucle Ha Giang - Dong Van-Meo Vac" : * Est-il possible de prendre une voiture à Ha Giang et se faire déposer au retour à Bac Ha ? * La réservation d'une voiture avec chauffeur parlant anglais (ou français si cela existe) est-t-elle possible depuis Hanoi ? Connaissez-vous des agences ? On souhaiterait se faire récupérer a Ha Giang à la sortie du bus et se faire déposer à la fin à Bac Ha : est-ce possible ? - après la "boucle du nord-est", le détour pas Sapa vaut-il le coup pour les paysages ? les paysages de rizières sont-ils vraiment les plus beaux autour de Sapa, ou y en-a-t-il d'autres vers Bac Ha/Ha Giang/Dong Van ?
- on sait qu'on risque un temps (très ?) pluvieux à Hue-Hoi An fin septembre/début octobre : bien que la météo ne soit pas une science exacte, est-on sur d'etre sous un déluge ou peut-on avoir des journées seulement humide avec des pluies intermittentes ? Si on est certain d'etre sous l'eau du matin au soir, on ira au sud directement.
- Mui Ne : on aime bien se poser qqs jours en bord de mer pour snorkeling/repos en fin de voyage : j'avais envisagé d'aller à Con Dao mais la mer a l'air agitée a cette période, du coup j'ai pensé aller à Mui Ne qui a l'air au soleil et assez sympa (surtout les environs) malgré l'absence de snorkeling et la langue russe que je ne maitrise pas (!) : votre avis sur ces 2 destinations (ou autre ?) - Delta du Mekong : être basé à Can Tho 2 jours est-il un bon plan pour visiter les environs (avec agence ou chauffeur ? qu'est ce qui est le mieux ?) Sinon quel parcours conseillez-vous en 2-3 jours ? faut-il avoir un chauffeur ou peut-on se débrouiller sans perdre trop de temps et sans rater des bons plans (canaux, villages, ...)

Our goal is to avoid rushing around too much and take our time, focusing on nature, hiking, and getting to know the locals.
